Taking over from Eternal who took over from The3DOstrich
Poor Ambipom hasn't got an analysis yet!
QC: PK Gaming, Snuch, Oglemi
GP: New World Order
[Overview]

With a great base 115 Speed coupled with a respectable base 100 Attack, Ambipom is nothing to be triffled with. Ambipom remains one of the best revenge killers and late-game sweepers thanks to Technician and its wide movepool. The monkey can abuse Technician-boosted Fake Out to dent anything that does not resist it. With that, Ambipom often forces switches and racks up entry hazards damage on opposing Pokemon. It also has nifty support moves such as Taunt, Thunder Wave, and Baton Pass to further assist your team. BW brought it Hone Claws, which gives it a way to boost its Attack to even greater heights. Even at just +1 Attack, Ambipom is a force to be reckoned with as Technician boosts the power of moves with 60 Base Power or lower. However, with new members in UU, such as Zapdos and Mew, Ambipom lost its niche as an offensive Baton Pass user, and due to its frailty, it is easily OHKOed or 2HKOed by most moves. Nonetheless, Ambipom is a great fit on most teams.

[SET]
name: All-Out Attacker
move 1: Fake Out
move 2: Return
move 3: Low Kick
move 4: Pursuit / U-turn
item: Life Orb / Silk Scarf
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

With access to Technician, a nice movepool, remarkable Speed, and respectable Attack, Ambipom is the perfect candidate for a pure attacking set. Technician-boosted STAB Fake Out can do serious damage if unresisted, and also gives Ambipom a free turn every time it switches in. Return is Ambipom's strongest attack and main STAB move to deal nice, consistent damage. After the likes of Registeel or Rhyperior switch in to tank a Fake Out, Ambipom can proceed to hit them super effectively with Low Kick. Pursuit is used to kill fleeing Ghost-types and other Pokemon hoping to escape from Ambipom's powerful attacks. Furthermore, Pursuit receives a Technician-boost, making it a powerful move even if the target opts to stay in. U-turn allows Ambipom to make a quick getaway and still does damage as Ambipom switches out. It also prevents Ambipom from being revenge killed by Wobbuffet which can easily use Encore and Counter to swiftly KO Ambipom. You can employ a combination of Fake Out and U-turn to keep momentum while dealing a decent amount of damage to whatever does not resist these attacks.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Fire Punch can be used to hit bulky Grass-types such as Tangrowth, but take note that a neutral Return outdamages a 2x super effective Fire Punch. Against bulky Water-types such as Quagsire, a surprise Seed Bomb can swiftly KO them. Thanks to its ability to force switches, entry hazard support is greatly appreciated to rack up some residual damage. Donphan and Roserade are great teammates to provide those entry hazards. Furthermore, the former can sponge a few physical attacks while the latter can shrug off some special attacks aimed at Ambipom. With Life Orb recoil wearing it down, Ambipom would get a second life with Wish support from teammates such as Chansey and Alomomola. Dual screen support from Cresselia or Uxie can prove useful to mitigate Ambipom's atrocious defenses. Ambipom can also switch in on Ghost-type attacks aimed at the dual screen users while the latter can easily come in on Fighting-type attacks that target the monkey.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Return
move 2: Low Sweep / Low Kick
move 3: Pursuit / Payback
move 4: U-turn / Switcheroo
item: Choice Band
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

With a Choice Band equipped, Ambipom can utilize its great Speed and good Attack stats to function as an effective revenge killer. Return is Ambipom's STAB move which can severely dent anything that does not resist it. Factoring in Choice Band and Technician boost, Low Sweep wrecks Steel- and Rock-types, while also lowering the Speed of the switch-in, allowing Ambipom to achieve potential 2HKOs. However, Low Kick can be used instead to hit heavier foes such as Registeel and Rhyperior for more damage. Due to the inconsistency of Low Kick's Base Power, Low Sweep is usually the preferred option. Pursuit enables Ambipom to trap and kill Psychic- and Ghost-types, such as Froslass, Mismagius, and Xatu. Payback, however, can be used to deal consistent damage and recieves a Technician boost should Ambipom move first. U-turn enables Ambipom to be an effective scout and escape from an unfavorable matchup in the event of a double switch. Switcheroo can be used as a final attempt to cripple a defensive threat or slower foes such as Hippowdon and Spiritomb. This allows Ambipom to ditch its item and gain the ability to switch moves (unless it is switched back a Choice item) should it need to do so.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Fire Punch or Aerial Ace can be used to hit bulky Grass-types, as well as notable threats such as Venomoth, which can switch into a predicted Low Sweep and set up a Quiver Dance. Aerial Ace is also boosted by Technician. Seed Bomb remains an option that hits bulky Water-types harder than Return. Acrobatics may be used if you switched and received a one-time-use item, but that is rarely the case. These moves are usually not recommended as they are very situational and the standard moves are almost always better. Dual screen support allows Ambipom to stick around for a few more turns, despite its almost non-existent defenses. With dual screen support, Ambipom can punch holes into the opposing team by spamming Choice Band Return while taking less damage behind the screens. Cresselia and Uxie are ideal teammates as they have nice synergy with Ambipom, which gives them more chances to set up the screens and allow Ambipom to safely switch in. With no way to recover HP by itself, Ambipom appreciates Wish support from teammates such as Alomomola and Chansey to extend its longevity.

[Other Options]

Ambipom can run an offensive Baton Pass set with Nasty Plot, Hone Claws, or Work Up, but it is often outclassed by other Baton Pass users such as Mew, Zapdos, and Togekiss, all which boast better bulk and an instant recovery move. A dedicated lead set can be used, though it is rather ineffective due to Team Preview. Ambipom can act as an offensive boosting sweeper with Hone Claws, but it rarely gets an opportunity to set up, let alone sweep. With nifty support moves, Ambipom can use attacks such as Thunder Wave and Toxic to spread status throughout the opposing team while maintaining an offensive presence. It can use various other offensive moves such as Seed Bomb, Fire Punch, and Aerial Ace to nab surprise KOs on bulky Grass- and Water-types. A set using only Fake Out and Last Resort can be used, but it is way too risky due to the lack of coverage.

[Checks and Counters]

Due to Ambipom's frailty, any reasonably strong attacker which can take a hit from Ambipom can easily dispatch the monkey. Priority moves such as Mach Punch will pose a major problem to Ambipom, as they not only bypass its great Speed stat, but they can also hit Ambipom hard enough to KO. Hitmontop is a prime example of such a priority user. It can use Fake Out to weaken Ambipom and annihilate it with Mach Punch. Venomoth can come in on a Choice Band Low Kick or Low Sweep and either set up a Quiver Dance or cripple the switch-in with Sleep Powder. Any hard hitting Choice Scarf users such as Flygon can revenge kill Ambipom. Bulky Ghost-types such as Dusknoir, Cofagrigus, and Spiritomb can switch into its STAB move and cripple it with Will-O-Wisp.

[Dream World]

Ambipom receives Skill Link from Dream World, though it only helps with DoubleSlap and Fury Swipes. Technician is always the superior option and Skill Link should never be considered.
