A Pimp Under The Sun : An OU Sunny Day Team

[SIZE=+2]A Pimp Under The Sun [/SIZE]

Hello Members of the Smogon Community! APimpNamedSlickback here, and I had created an almost commpletely Original Sunny Day team and wanted some feedback. Hoping you guys can help me out. Completely open to changing sets, EV's, items, etc. I have played this team out quite a few times, It has won many battles, but also lost to a lot of unsuspecting mons. If you guys wouldnt mind, post some threats you think there are to this team, and some solutions for them. Off the top of my head I can say, Tyranitar, Politoed, Landorus, Dragonite, Salamence, and Gyarados.

Ninetales @ Leftovers
252 HP, 88 Def, 100 SP Atk, 64 Sdef.
Bold (+Def,-Atk)
Drought
-Fire Blast
-Will-o-Wisp
-Solarbeam
-Nasty Plot
Ah Nintales. The summoner of sun. Serves as a bulky lead and sets up sun. A mixed set of status spreading and Nasty Plot attacking. Didnt want to run a typical set, and wanted to try to lure all those water and ground types to Solarbeam them into oblivion. Tried to make it as bulky as possible, but I dont really understand EV's, so help here would be appreciated.

dugtrio_by_burashi-d38p5g6.png

Dugtrio @ Focus Sash
252 Atk, 252 Spe
Jolly (+Spe,-Sp Atk)
Arena Trap
-Stone Edge
-Reversal
-Earthquake
-Sucker Punch
Dugtrio is boss. He is on this team to trap and block other weather inducers, as well as pokemon weak to Ground, Rock, Fighting, or Dark (Tyranitar, Politoed, etc) Standard trapper set, able to 2HKO Tyranitar, and go on a Reversal rampage due to his sash.

Cloyster @ Focus Sash
200 Atk, 100 Def, 100 Sp Atk, 108 Spe
Naive (+Spe,-SPDef)
Skill Link
-Shell Smash
-Rapid Spin
-Hidden Power [Fire]
-Icicle Spear
My unique Cloyster. He isnt meant to be a sweeper, but can become one if necessary. HP Fire boosted in the sun = screw you Forry, Nattorei, and Scizor. Shell Smash + Icicle Spear handles anything not immune to Ice, particulary dragons. Rapid spin for anti-hazard.

darmanitan_by_themarvelguy-d37ki6t.png

Darmanitan @ Choice Scarf
252 Atk, 252 Spe
Sheer Force
Adamant (+Atk,-Spe)
-Flare Blitz
-Rock Slide
-Earthquake
-Brick Break [?]
My beast. Flare Blitz+Sunny Day+Stab+Sheer Force = BOOM. This guy will 2HKO pretty much anything. Rock Slide and Earthquake are for coverage. I didnt know what to do with the last slot, I threw in brick break for those screeners like Espeon, Deoxys, and Bronzong. I was considering U-Turn, but idk.

pcp__chandelure_sissel_by_rc_bike-d387mrp.png

Chandelure @ Leftovers
252 SPAtk, 252 Spe
Flash Fire
Timid (+Spe, -Atk)
-Fire Blast
-Shadow Ball
-Solarbeam
-Sunny Day [?]
My second offensive mon. His role is pretty straightforward, use the sun to power up and blast holes through the enemy team. Fire Blast and Shadow Ball for stab attacks, Solarbeam for coverage. I threw in Sunny Day, but I am willing to change it to something else. He is a backup weather inducer, and a spinblocker :) He also loves getting his Fire moves powered up when someone tries to Incinerate Bronzong.

bronzong_by_atatakakunakatta-d2xj286.jpg

Bronzong @ Light Clay
252 SpDef, 252 HP
Sassy (+SPDef, -Spe)
Levitate
-Gyro Ball
-Reflect
-Light Screen
-Stealth Rock
My filler mon. I really didnt know what to put in this last spot, so I threw in a Bronzong. He is a Dual Screener and Rocker. I want to change this pokemon to Espeon, can someone give me a good set? Gyro Ball for offense.

Thank you guys so much for taking the time for reviewing my team, feedback is welcome, wanted, and liked. This was my first RMT, pretty stoked :)

Epic Help

Hi there I see you have created a sun team. That`s very interesting, I have just made a sun team to. At first I was a little confused at this team but I soon realized why you made these choices. However on Dugtrio you might want Choice Band I found it to be a great set. Now you also might want that sunny day on chandlure to be replacet by an atacking move such as energy ball or HP Fighting. Otherwise great sun team.

Yes i would definitely go with u-turn over brick break on hihidaruma. Also many of your guys are missing 4 EVs

Your unique Cloyster simply doesn't work. Firstly, what's the point of the evs that are currently in place? How is HP gonna kill most mons? I suggest you switch to the standard Cloyster set.

Solid from what I see; but defo U-Turn on Darmanitan and possibly use Substitute over Sunny Day on Chandelure, also might wanna consider using Energy Ball over Solarbeam as Tyranitar is a pretty common switch in to Chandelure, however if your behind a sub you can hit it with an energy ball before switching to the respective check.

Agreeing with the above, I do not think you need all the special attack evs on cloyster. The pokemon you listed that it is supposed to kill are most likely going to be koed by a hidden power fire move when it is boosted in the sun. I also don't think the set is very effective in general. It has rapid spin, a weakness to stealth rock, and focus sash. Unless you predict the stealth rock and switch in while the opponent is using it, you take damage from it and lose your focus sash. I think that a defensive donphan could work well. Has it's own focus sash in the form of Sturdy, and it adds priority in ice shard. (Even if it isn't the strongest, it can ko weak dragons and such.) Heres the set:

Donphan @ Leftovers
252 Hp, 252 Def, 4 Atk
Sturdy
Impish ( Def +, Sp. Atk -)
-Earthquake
-Stealth Rock
-Rapid Spin
-Toxic/Roar/Ice Shard (If you want another status user, a phazer, or a priority user, pick the move accordingly.)

Hope this helps.

Hi

This is a pretty interesting Sun team. You don't utilize the 2 most used pokes that are usually used on team as this one; Venusaur and Volcarona. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but those pokes are the most used for a reason.
Still, I see some potential in this team so here are my 2 cents.

So I noticed you want to use Espeon instead of Bronzong. This is possible, you can give Dugtrio Stealth Rock instead of Sucker Punch to fix the "no SRs problem". A Dual Screener can work here but I think that a CM sweeper can be really effective on this team. A moveset of Calm Mind / Psyshock / Hidden Power [Fire] / Morning Sun is the one I had in mind. Since you have Dugtrio to get rid of the things that wall this set (Tyranitar, Heatran, ...) it will give you a more then decent sweeper, capable of giving opposing teams a very hard time. There are 2 EV spread you could use here; The standard 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spe or the bulkier 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spe. It depends on your preference so use whatever you like. Magic Bounce is a nifty ability as well as not only it reflect hazards back to your opponent, it also prevents Espeon from being status'ed or phazed away. Leftovers is obviously gonna be the preferred held item.

For the next suggestion I first have to say your Water weakness is enormous, 4 pokes on your team are hit extremely hard by it and you're only resist has a pathetic Special Defensive stat. Yes, the Sun reduces the power of Water-type moves but you can't switch Ninetales into Politoed every time the weather changes. A possible solution here is to run Jellicent instead of Chandelure. Jellicent might sound weird on a Sun team but this will still let you keep your Spin Blocker while it also provides you with a much needed Water immunity. Jellicent will also help you with Stall somewhat with Taunt. A moveset of Taunt / Scald / Recover / Toxic can fit here perfectly. Leftovers as the preferred held item and an EV spread of 248 HP / 160 Def / 100 Spd with a Bold nature. This will give Jellicent enough Speed to handle most stall teams while still maintain a fair amount of bulk. Alternatively you could run Will-o-wisp over Toxic but the latter makes it easier to handle Volcarona, Latias, Politoed and the likes, who are always a threat to most Sun teams. Besides, you already have Ninetales with Will-o-Wisp. Water Absorb is of course the way to go ability-wise.

Your Ninetales set is definitely unique but to be honest, I doubt it's usefulness. Since you aim to run a more offensive set, I suggest a slightly different EV spread. A spread of 128 HP / 252 SpA / 20 SpD / 108 Spe with a Modest nature lets it hit much harder. You could also run Sunny Day over Nasty Plot. Ninetales lures out the other weather starters in Politoed and Tyranitar, so if you Sunny Day on the switch you can hit both of these pokemon hard with a powerful Super Effective Solarbeam. Another option here is Hidden Power [Ice] instead of Wil-o-Wisp, just to have an extra insurance against Dragonite (it's the most used pokemon for a reason).

On Darmanitan, as Novaray has mentioned, U-turn is preferred indeed. You can use it over Earthquake which doesn't provide you with that much extra coverage. You can also try Superpower over Brick Break for more power. Usually you switch out after using it anyway so the Atk - and Def drop don't really matter.

Cloyster is actually very effective on Sun team so kudos for using it. I don't know how effective this custom set is but I trust you in your judgement. Although if you want you could run a more defensive variant with Spikes for even more team support.

Hope these suggestions helped and good luck with your team.

Hey Guys!
Thanks so much for all the replies. I tried Donphan over Cloyster and it really wasnt working, so I decided to keep the Cloyster. Delko, thank you sooo much for the sets, it made my team a whole lot better. I also managed to fix up all the little things you guys told me about. This team has become quite successful now, thanks a whole bunch!

From my experience playing sun (I peaked #5 with it) I'd suggest some changes:

-Darmanitan doesn't need earthquake, the rest of the moves cover pretty much everything, bar tentacruel. I suggest replacing it with u-turn which helps gaining momentum.

-I prefer superpower over brick break for darmanitan.

- I don't see much use in hp fire cloyster, why not rock blast instead for gyarados?

- I don't like solarbeam ninetales. If you happen to use it, a somewhat strong player will switch to his weather inducer and now you're trapped and will get KO'd/severely damaged. I don't need to explain why losing sun is losing game. If you really need a grass attack use energy ball instead, but it doesn't hit anything strong enough. I'd rather use other ninetales sets. I'll list them and if you want a detailed description on how a particular one works let me know.

set1 (easy to use)

Fire blast
will-o-wisp
toxic
protect

set2 (can do some actual damage)

overheat
power swap
will-o-wisp
hidden power fighting

set3 (very good set, but needs a lot of skill)

fire blast
sunny day
solarbeam
will-o-wisp

I'm sorry to say this but your team isn't very well structured. It goes down against other weather teams quickly. And even when you have sun up you aren't lethal. As most drought teams you are weak to stealth rock, wich is quite unavoidable, but your case is extreme.

I know your idea is to neutralize other weather inducers with dugtrio but it isn't as easy as you believe. I'll tell you how I play against that: I try to set hazards quickly to punish ninetales and poison it if possible. From there on, I bring my weather inducer to cancell sun in a unexpected pattern and then run away so as to not get dugtrioed. To beat me you need to correctly anticipate my weather inducer switch and send dugtrio in (not always easy); if I suspect you're trying to do that play on me I might fire off a hit instead to ko your mole. Not to say that every time I remove sun, ninetales has to find a spot to come in again and that will bring it down quickly.

Now, even with sun up, you don't make as much of an impact as you should (with sun up you are forced to put instant sweep presure on your oponent, ie, he has to lose in 7-8 turns ideally).

Darmanitan does that.
Ninetales can't sweep.
Bronzong definetely can't sweep.
Chanderule can kill but it's too slow.
Cloyster can do the same job outside sun.
Dugtrio doesn't abuse sun and as explained before, it still struggles to get it's job done.

I cannot do the work of restructuring your team for you. But the basic guidelines are: work on a more solid core that bypasses stealth rock and can deal with other weather. Try to abuse sun more with pokes that get fast and clean KO's.

If you want to get some ideas on how to do this, try to watch some superman4thewin battles. He's playing successful sun at the moment and is a true master at doubleswtching, which lets him activate sun over and over.
