[Overview]
-Attack, Defense, and HP are good, but everything else is pitiful
-Weak to common Water-, Ice-, Grass-, Fighting-, and Ground-type moves
-Movepool isn't very wide, but it has everything it needs
-Functions great as a Swords Dancer / Rock Polish user / Trick Roomer
-Gaining STAB on Earthquake sets it apart from Gigalith, as it hits Steel-types harder.
-Both of its abilities are poor, cause it's immune to Electric-type moves, and Double-Edge is its only recoil move, which is never used

[SET]
name: Bulky Attacker
move 1: Stealth Rock /Substitute
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Megahorn / Dragon Tail
item: Eviolite
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def

[SET COMMENTS]
-With Eviolite, Rhydon is very, very bulky. It's still very powerful as well.
-It's almost guaranteed to set up Stealth Rock or a Substitute
-Stone Edge provides STAB
-Earthquake hits Steel-types super effectively
-Megahorn hits Psychic-types etc. Dragon Tail forces the opponent out and works great with Stealth Rock

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
-EVs maximize Rhydon's Attack and HP, making it bulky, and offensive. Impish and 252 Defense EVs can be use for an even more bulky set. Don't bother with its Special Defense.
-Brave nature can be used in Trick Room
-Swords Dance can be used in the last slot with Substitute
-Leafeon and Altaria can switch into Rhydon's weaknesses, as well as Rotom-A who resist different types. I'll go in depth when written. Water Absorb users maybe?
-A spinblocker to keep hazards on the field is good. Haunter is a good offensive choice, and it can cripple walls with Trick. Drifblim is another decent choice.
-Wish support can be helpful because Rhydon lacks recovery. Leafeon has Wish, and it has great defensive synergy with Rhydon.

[SET]
name: Rock Polish
move 1: Rock Polish
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Megahorn / Aqua Tail
item: Life Orb / Eviolite
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-Rhydon is fairly slow, but after a Rock Polish it's threatening. Makes a great late-game cleaner with its base 130 Attack
-The idea is to set up a Rock Polish against a Pokemon that will switch, mainly Poison-types or Normal-types
-Earthquake for STAB, Stone Edge to hit Flying-types, and Aqua Tail to hit bulky Ground-types. Megahorn hits Grass- and Psychic-types supr effectively.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
-EVs outrun uninvested base 80 Pokemon before a boost.
-Leftovers can be used for a little survivability, but it loses power
-Eviolite can be used too, cause it provides bulk
-Swords Dance can be used in the last slot for extra power, but it loses the ability to hit Grass- and Psychic-type super effectively
-Entry hazard support such as Toxic Spikes from Garbodor and Stealth Rock from Probopass
-A Pokemon who can switch into Aqua Jet, such as Leafeon
-Pokemon who can switch into Rhydon's weaknesses in general. Rotom-F can switch into Ice- and Ground-type moves. Altaria can switch into Ground-, Grass-, Water-, and Fighting-type moves etc.

[Other Options]
-Counter
-Curse
-Hammer Arm
-Elemental Punches
-Rock Blast
-Reversal
-Roar
-Substitute

[Checks and Counters]
-Grass-, Water-, and Ground-types
-Leafeon, Alomomola, Quagsire, Miltank, Torterra, Carracosta, Weezing, Meganium, Cradily...The list goes on
-As long as it has decent Defense and isn't weak to Earthquake, Stone Edge, or Megahorn
-Anything with special based Water-, Grass-, Ground-, and Fighting-type moves in general
-Burn it

[Dream World]
-Gets Reckless, but it only has Double-Edge to abuse it with. Rhydon has poor abilities in general.

This needs a defensive support set, Rhydon is uber bulky with eviolite and investment, and is almost guaranteed to get SR up. Could be seen as outclassed by Gigilith in this regard, since it has Sturdy, but Rhydon has STAB Earthquake as well as Megahorn.

The set I use looks like:

[SET]
name: Bulky Attacker
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Megahorn / Dragon Tail
item: Eviolite
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

There really isn't any point in investing in SpD iirc since everything that's going to hit you there (Surf, Grass Knot, Ice Beam, etc.) is prolly gonna kill you anyway even with max investment (well Ice Beam and Focus Blast you'll live I think). Anyway, the point of the set is to get SR up, and just fucking tank shit.

Also, a SubPerior set is probably viable, will get back to you on that.

Quick post before I go. I'm still trying things with Rhydon, I just needed a place to post what I'd done :) I'll add in some other things a bit later when I get home from work.

Yea, Sub + 3 Attacks can work pretty well, I'd add it to the sets.

Also maybe mention double-dance in the OO

And I'd probably mention Eviolite on every set, simply because Rhydon has pretty awesome Defense after the boost, tho just an AC mention for the more offensively oriented sets

Also on RP I like Megahorn > Aqua Tail; there are hordes of things weak to Bug-type that could actually live a Stone Edge/EQ and KO you: Mesprit, Exeggutor, Slowking to name a couple. Leafeon and Tangela are also hit hardest by Megahorn. IMO Aqua Tail provides generally redundant coverage with EQ.

I thout we generally weren't supposed to post Trick Room sets, just mention in ACs that they're vable
With that said, possiby a CB set? can come in on locked physical attacks and wreck havok; it's one of the most powerful Pokemon in the tier, and doesn't need to set up

Bulky Attacker needs to be the #1 set. The main spread should be 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def with Substitute slashed next to Rocks. The Impish spread, plus things like Swords Dance, should be in AC.

Eviolite should pretty much always be the main option, although I suspect Life Orb is viable on the RP set because it probably gets quite a few important KOs. Megahorn should definitely be the main option over Aqua Tail because of the crucial KOs on bulky-ish Psychics you get with it - probably more important than OHKOing other Rhydon, which is basically the only thing Aqua Tail does.

Well, I guess I should thank you guys for doing a lot of the work. I didn't have time to finish this off myself, and people weighed in before I had chance to. Anyway, I've added a bulky set at the top, with Eviolite. I've made a mention of double dance, Substitute, and a more defensive spread. I've also made Megahorn the primary option in the last slot of the other sets. Not sure what else I can do. QC would be appreciated.

Ok a few things:

No need for the TR set, its exactly the same as the Bulky attacker but with a Brave nature, 0 IV, and 4 attacks. Should just be AC on that set.

In your other options, remove: Dragon Rush, Payback, Elemental Fangs. Dragon Rush is lol, Payback is always inferior to Megahorn, Elemental Fangs < Punches. I'd also say Hammer Arm but that has some use in TR kinda, though everything it hits 4x SE gets hit SE by EQ.

Okay, Trick Room set is removed, and I've added a mention of it in the bulky attacker set. God, I'm awful at NFE Pokemon analyses [.__.]

Yeah looks fine. I still think Eviolite should be slashed on the RP set though (and you might as well run max Speed to tie with uninvested base 80s before a boost as well as neutral-natured Scarf base 80s at +2 along with any other Scarfers like Sawk and Magmortar that might drop down to just above Swellow).

I would mention Rock Blast in the OO. Rock Blast is fantastic for demolishing Pokemon like Ninjask and Volbeat, who think that they're safe behind a Substitute and can bank on a Stone Edge Miss.

Another thing is that a purely physically defensive set should be mentioned
252 HP 252 Def Impish. Mainly because that that set is one of if not the best Swellow checks in NU right now.

The set that I'm currently running is:

Rhydon w/ Eviolite
Ability: Doesn't matter, both suck.
Nature: Impish
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 Def/ 4 Atk

  • Stealth Rock
  • Stone Edge/ Rock Blast
  • Earthquake
  • Megahorn
Edit: yeah I didn't see Oglemi's other thread, but oh well :/
