Mightyena QC (3/3) GP (2/2)

[Overview]

Since its debut in RSE, Mightyena has never seen too much sunlight in competitive play. Having always resided of the darkest depths in NU tier due to its biggest rival Absol, Mightyena comes into the sunlight this generation to show that it can do more than just howl in the shadows in this Psychic- and Ghost-type filled metagame. The one and only selling point of the mighty hyena is that it gets Moxie from the Dream World, allowing it to stand its ground in several battles. However, Mightyena's movepool is empty and lackluster, meaning the hyena doesn't have the coverage needed to counter several threads in the NU metagame. Rest assured though, for as long as you grab some Moxie boosts with Mightyena, it can make a great late game cleaner.

[SET]
name: Moxie Hyena
move 1: Sucker Punch
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Thunder Fang
move 4: Ice Fang
item: Life Orb
ability: Moxie
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set is really simple and requires almost no skill to use bar prediction at the right moment. Crunch is a STAB move to attack foes that you can outspeed or if you know the opponent is not going to attack. Sucker Punch allows Mightyena to overcome his middling Speed and strike before the opponent; and once Mightyena has attained several boosts, your opponent will want to rage quit. The last two moves create the infamous BoltBeam combo; despite being fairly weak, it allows Mightyena to hit everything in the tier for at least for neutral damage. You will rarely find yourself using the latter two moves, except when the opponent is 4x weak to one or resistant to your STAB moves.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EV spread is standard and aims to maximize Mightyena's below average Attack and give it a chance to outspeed common Psychic- types. An Adamant nature is always preferred over Jolly as with Adamant it gains more power, which is always welcome, and there aren't too many things Mightyena needs to outspeed. Life Orb also bestows Mightyena with more offensive presence, which allows it to 2HKO every bulky Psychic-type, such as Mesprit, Exeggutor, and Duosion, in the tier.

Since Mightyena will mostly be coming in to pick off weakened enemies, every kind of residual damage greatly assists it. Garbodor is one of the best teammates for Mightyena, as it can lay Spikes or Toxic Spikes and invites Psychic-type attacks so Mightyena can switch unscathed. Misdreavus is also a decent partner as it can Will-O-Wisp Sawk and other physical threats, rendering them useless. Sawk and Magmortar are also good Pokemon to pair with Mightyena as they can remove Pokemon such as Regirock, Miltank, and Lickilicky, which would otherwise stop Mightyena's attempt to sweep with ease. Also, entry hazards in conjunction with Life Orb recoil will drastically shorten Mightyena's life, so Rapid Spin support is always welcomed. Torkoal is a good teammate for this, as it can spin entry hazards away in addition to putting Stealth Rock on the opponent’s field.

[Other Options]

Mightyena is a Pokemon has very few viable moves it can run, other than the options already listed. Mightyena has access to Taunt which can shut down some Pokemon, such as Misdreavus, or stop Pokemon who try to set up on it. Swagger is another odd possibility for Mightyena, but even with it the hyena will rarely annoy opponent as it will be OHKOed most of its time. Mightyena also can utilize Roar to phaze, however, its defenses are paper thin, meaning it will never get a chance to accomplish this well. Mightyena has Intimidate as its primary ability but a terrible Defense stat hardly allows Mightyena to switch in safely without being one-shoted. Quick Feet + Toxic Orb might seem viable, but it is pathetically weak. Mightyena also has other, more gimmicky moves, such as Me First and Toxic, but it’s not made for that, bearing in mind it has terrible stat distribution.

[Checks and Counters]

Mightyena isn't a Pokemon that one should have problems countering. Unfortunately, Mightyena can be stopped in its assault easily. Quagsire is its best counter as it can neglect all of the boosts Mightyena has managed to gather and Mightyena literally can't touch it. Regirock is another Pokemon that can sponge every hit Mightyena can dish out. As funny as it sounds, Regirock is only 2HKOed by +6 Crunch. Torkoal is another Pokemon that has no problem walling Mightyena as long as it hasn’t gotten to +3 Attack from Moxie, and it can either set up Stealth Rock or just proceed to slowly kill the hyena. Lickilicky and Miltank can easily stall Mightyena out with Life Orb recoil by using Wish and Protect or Milk Drink, respectively. Tangela is another great counter as it can take +1 hits and Leech Seed or Sleep Powder the mighty hyena.

You want Adamant as the main slash on the Moxie set - what does Jolly actually outspeed?

Fire Fang is pretty important as your only real shot at hitting Steel-types, and should be main slash on both sets (although are the Fangs even Dream World compatible?)

tbh
quick feet does not deserve its own set
without the boost to mighteyenas attack with moxie it really cant hurt anything
moxie is the only viable option

Happy should it be removed? It's true without boosts Hyena lacks sheer power. I'll wait to what others have to say.

hyenas base attack is pretty sad
its the same as beasts like
ninjask, forretress and ariados
while other base 90s like scrafty and cobalion NEED their boosting moves to do any damage
plus hyenas coverage options are really weak

Moxie gets a stamp from me, though I'll have to come back at you regarding Quick Feet - testing it right now.

Ok just got back from some testing and long story short Quick Feet Mightyena is pitifully weak. Moxie's cool in my book though because it's Moxie and it needs the extra Attack. Just remove the Quick Feet set, and you'll be good to go

Banned deucer.
• Fire Fang can be used if you struggle against Shedinja.

That should be removed, you can already hit Shedinja with Crunch.

drop mightyena's speed; it is not going to get any benefit from it and would be better off investing just enough to beat something like max exeggutor.

this is not a GP check. just happened to be passing through and decided to fix some quick issues - the curly apostrophes, some spaces in the writeup, missing [Overview] tag, and in particular take note of the spaces around the slashes in the nature: and evs: parts.

very minor question - why are 4 Def EVs used instead of 4 HP? unless it makes a significant difference eg. on pokemon massively weak to stealth rock (in which case it should be explained somewhere) 4 HP is standard iirc.

[SET COMMENTS]

This set itself is really simple and requires almost no skill bar prediction at the right moment. Crunch is your strongest STAB move to attack foes that you can outspeed or if you know opponent is going to use status move. Sucker Punch is only reason why Mightyena should be considered using as it can hit foes before they do, and if you attained several boosts under your belt, opponent will want to get rid of you. Sucker Punch also allows Mightyena to get past its mediocre speed problem. The last two moves compliment BoltBeam combo. Even though it's really weak, it lets Mightyena to hit everything in tier at least for neutral damage. On the other hand, you will rarely find yourself using the latter two moves, except in some cases; when opponent is 4x weak or resist your STAB moves.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EV spread is standard and aims to maximize Mightyena's not so good physical offense stats and give a chance for it to outspeed common Psychic types. Adamant nature is always preferred over Jolly as with it as more power is always welcome and there won't be too many things Mightyena needs to outspeed. Life Orb also bestows Mightyena more offensive presence, which lets to 2HKO all bulky Psychic-type Pokemon in tier.

Since Mightyena will be mostly coming to pick off weakened enemies, every kind of additional damage highly assists it. Garbodor is one of the best teammates for Mightyena is it can lay Spikes/Toxic Spikes and invite Psychic attacks aimed at it for Mightyena to handle. Misdreavus is also decent partner as it can Will-O-Wisp Sawk and other physical threads and render them useless. Sawk and Magmortar are as well perfect Pokemon to pair with Mightyena as they can remove Pokemon such as Regirock, Miltank, Lickilicky and other Pokemon, who would otherwise stop Mightyena's attempt to sweep with ease. Also, since Mightyena will be switching every now and then, entry hazards in conjunction with Life Orb recoil will abbreviate Mightyena's life, so Rapid Spin is always welcome. Torkoal is good teammate for that matter as it can spin entry hazards away as well as put Stealth Rock on opponent's field.

[Other Options]

Mightyena is a Pokemon who can hardly offer something more than few moves. Those are: Roar, Taunt, Swagger, Toxic and Me First. However, with such base stats you will barely ever use those with success. Mightyena also has Intimidate as its primary ability but as mentioned above Mightyena just cannot to abuse the ability due to mediocre base stats.

Tangela is also great counter as it can take +1 hits and Leech Seed or Sleep Powder the mighty hyena.

edit re. below, but investing in HP gives more bulk overall, no? in general unless there's a very good reason, like allowing volcarona or moltres or articuno etc to switch into stealth rock one more time, they're placed in HP. psst, it would also help GP quite a bit if you looked over the spacing changes i've made and clean up your other analysis a little :)

Thanks sirndpt. I will edit OP when i get near PC. And about thosd 4 EV's, they don't make too much difference, but hyena will take physical hits like 0,30% better xD But it's not like it can survive any stronger hit so those 4 points doesn't make any difference whatsoever.
Edit. Re ^ Ok, edited and yeah, sorry for lots of spacing stuff. Uploaded this with a fricking old school PC and it made some words merge. Thanks anyways ^^

It's possibly too late for it, but maybe it would help to change the position of Ice Fang and Thunder Fang and slash TFang with Taunt. Seeing as Thunder Fang will be used even less than Ice Fang, as Ice Fang hits Torterra very hard and the only thing TFang will really be used on are nonexistant Mantine.

With Taunt, you prevent Misdreavus from using Will-O-Wisp and Pain Split which is very helpful seeing as even with Adamant and Life Orb you only do a maximum of 72.22% to the standard set. From the Taunt, you can either get your Moxie boost through killing Missy off or using a Crunch & Sucker Punch combo on the incoming switch-in.

Thunder Fang is necessary for Pokemon like Gorebyss and Alomomola, and Torterra is nonexistant (a more relevant example would be, say, Golem). Taunt is a neat concept but it's really only marginally useful to help Mightyena take down some physical walls (Misdreavus and Alomomola are probably the best two I can think of, followed by Weezing) but even then struggles to break through them without sustaining some hefty damage and potentially a burn in Alomomola's case. You're also hard-pressed to power through Pokemon like Tangela, even with Ice Fang (which I think is the lesser of the two coverage options anyway). If anything, Taunt can be given an AC mention, but I'd really avoid giving it an entire slash simply because it doesn't do too much for Mightyena.

edit: also if misdreavus switches in on mightyena you win anyway

Why isn't Return mentioned anywhere in the analysis? It's Mightyena's second strongest move and provides excellent coverage apart from Steel-types. Don't understand why this isn't over one of the elemental fangs.

However, Mightyena's movepool is empty and lackluster, meaning the hyena doesn’t have the coverage needed to counter several threads in the NU metagame. Rest assured though, for as long as you grab some Moxie boosts with Mightyena, it can make a great late game cleaner.

Mightyena isn’t a Pokemon that one should have problems countering. Unfortunately, Mightyena can be stopped in its assault easily. Quagsire is its best counter as it can neglect all of the boosts Mightyena has managed to gather and Mightyena literally can’t touch it. Lickilicky and Miltank can easily stall Mightyena out with Life Orb recoil by using Wish+Protect or Milk Drink, respectively. Tangela is another great counter as it can take +1 hits and Leech Seed or Sleep Powder the mighty hyena.
