[Overview]

Frillish stands as one of the best specially defensive bulky Water-types in NU. It is known for everything its big sister Jellicent is known for in OU: excellent typing, Will-O-Wisp, and a solid recovery move. Its Ghost typing enables Frillish to spinblock all major Rapid Spin users in NU, including Torkoal, Cryogonal, and Armaldo. Its biggest selling point, however, is Recover, a move that most NFE walls would kill to have access to. While it faces competition from another capable Ghost-type in Misdreavus, Frillish is a unique choice as a status platform, spinblocker, and a special wall. A well-played Frillish is also very capable of pushing your opponent into a mad fit.

[SET]
name: Eviolite
move 1: Recover
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Night Shade
move 4: Toxic / Taunt
item: Eviolite
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]

Thanks to its unique type combination, Frillish is not outclassed by any fully evolved Pokemon, and is a truly viable option as an NFE wall. Recover is a reliable recovery move, and ensures that Frillish remains healthy. Will-O-Wisp is a great move to patch up Frillish's weaker physical Defense stat while chipping away at the enemy's health simultaneously. Night Shade breaks Substitutes and prevents Frillish from becoming set-up bait for the likes of Subtitute + Calm Mind Mesprit. Finally, Toxic is useful for beating Cryogonal in a one-on-one situation, but Taunt shuts down RestTalk users and other defensive Pokemon. However, Frillish is too slow to use Taunt effectively, and still risks becoming set-up fodder for faster sweepers, such as Jynx. Be sure to remember that Taunt only has limited use against opposing defensive Pokemon.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EV spread maximizes Frillish's mixed bulk after taking Will-O-Wisp and its naturally high Special Defense into account. However, Will-O-Wisp is cursed with an annoying 75% accuracy, making it somewhat unreliable. An alternative 252 HP / 120 Def / 126 SpD with Calm nature allows Frillish to switch on weaker physical attackers, such as Choice Scarf Sawk, more comfortably. Of course, you can choose to invest in Speed if Frillish has Taunt as its fourth move. Eviolite is surely the item of choice in order to improve Frillish's defenses. Attacking moves, such as Surf or Scald, are viable in the last slot in order to do more damage against Fire-types, such as Magmortar and Emboar; this is especially useful since physically oriented Fire-types may start switching in blindly when they assume that Frillish is unable to do anything back, which is usually a safe assumption given that Frillish's first defensive measure against physical threats is Will-O-Wisp. Both of its available abilities are viable on Frillish: Water Absorb grants an immunity to a common attacking type, whereas Cursed Body is incredibly clutch, winning otherwise hopeless games by disabling powerful moves, such as Swellow's Brave Bird or Magmortar's Thunderbolt.

Frillish is unable to tank physical hits, so a physical tank, such as Regirock, is a solid teammate. Cleric support from Altaria or Audino is also appreciated, as Frillish is incredibly weak to indirect damage from moves such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp. Frillish is also weak to Trick, Taunt, and other stallbreaking moves. In order to bypass them, a strong attacker or a Choice Scarf user of your own, such as Rotom-S, is useful. Note that while Frillish is incredibly specially bulky, strong attackers with powerful, super effective STAB moves, such as Exeggutor and Ampharos, can easily blast through Frillish. As a result, teammates such as Camerupt and Golbat are great for covering Electric- and Grass-type moves, respectively.

[Other Options]

Frillish has access to situational moves such as Refresh and Acid Armor. Indeed, these moves patch up Frillish's weakness to status and physical moves, but Frillish usually needs all of its moveslots. Also, Trick Room can be viable if you are looking for a bulky supporter with recovery, but the likes of Musharna and Mesprit will often serve you better for those purposes.

[Checks and Counters]

As an NFE wall, Frillish suffers due to its lack of an offensive presence. Pitched against anything with a Recovery move, the best it can do is PP stall. Also, Frillish is incredibly weak to the passive damage caused by Toxic and Spikes, and a timely Taunt or Trick will leave it helpless. For an offensive reply, specially oriented Grass- and Electric-types are great, as they do not care much about Will-O-Wisp. For example, Choice Specs Exeggutor can easily switch in on Will-O-Wisp and proceed to fire off a deadly Leaf Storm. Of course, strong physical attackers can OHKO Frillish with a super effective move, but they need to avoid Will-O-Wisp. As a result, Guts sweepers, such as Ursaring, are also good counters.

[Overview]
• Bulky on both sides
• Gorgeous typing, great spinblocker that stuffs Cryo, Torkoal, Wartortle, etc.
• Weak presense
• Eviolite makes it viable, Recover makes it good

[SET COMMENTS]
• Eviolite mon with unique typing, not outclassed by much
• Boss spinblocker yeah?
• Patches weak physical D with WOW
• Night Shade breaks subs and prevents it from being setup bait.
• Toxic sounds better because Frillish is too slow to taunt effectively
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
• Alternative mixed defensive spread.
• Eviolite is obvious
• Resters and status absorbers own Frillish
• So do Taunters
• Cleric support appreciated because it’s really weak to secondary damage like toxic
[Other Options]
• Scald is pointless because it does 0 damage. I’m serious. If you want to attack, Night Shade will always serve you better, and if you want to burn, WOW will always serve you better
• Refresh, Acid Armor, etc. situational moves
•Energy Ball.
• Got TR if you want a bulky setter
[Checks and Counters]
• Taunt / Trick = gg
• Status Absorbers
• Toxic cripples it
• Strong physical attackers, but they need to look out for wow
• Specially oriented Electrics and Grassers
• Roselia sets up hazards all day long, Exegg switches in for free to fire off specs Leaf Storm which sucks.
