Bisharp (GP 2/2)

[Overview]

The Dark Knight of Pokemon is a force to be reckoned with. A secondary Steel typing is a godsend for practically any Pokemon, granting Bisharp a slew of resistances that it can abuse to come in and set up. Bisharp also has a very impressive base Attack stat of 125, allowing it to easily put the hurt on its opponents. That Attack stat is also backed up by access to Swords Dance and Sucker Punch, Bisharp's main selling points, giving it access to the second most powerful priority move in the game. Bisharp's main weaknesses come from its lack of powerful moves other than Sucker Punch and its decidedly below-average Speed, meaning that most Pokemon that can avoid or take little damage from Sucker Punch will be able to bring Bisharp to its knees. Don't let that put you off though, as if Bisharp manages to nab that Swords Dance boost, you can be certain that chaos will swiftly follow.

[SET COMMENTS]

Knights as a general rule use swords, and Bisharp is no different. Thanks to its many resistances, coupled with its good Defense, it can easily nab itself a Swords Dance boost, reaching a sinister 766 Attack and proceeding to wreak havoc. Sucker Punch is Bisharp's main STAB move as it bypasses Bisharp's low Speed and enables it to strike first, should the opponent attempt to attack Bisharp. It's so powerful that, after some residual damage from entry hazard, it can OHKO Pokemon that resist it, such as Heracross. Unfortunately, many players have grown wise to this strategy, and attempt to avoid Sucker Punch by first using status moves such as Will-O-Wisp or by setting up a Substitute. Bisharp can turn the tables on these players by using Substitute itself, forcing the opponent to attack Bisharp, and thus making sure the Sucker Punch will hit. Iron Head is a secondary STAB move that's just as powerful as Sucker Punch and comes with a good chance to flinch the Pokemon slower than Bisharp. After a boost it is able to OHKO threatening Fighting-types, such as Machamp and Hitmontop, that will inevitably switch into Bisharp. Brick Break is an alternative coverage move that gives almost perfect coverage using the classic Fighting- and Dark-type attacking combination. It is just as effective in UU, only missing out on Heracross, which can be dispatched with a boosted Sucker Punch. It also allows Bisharp to break through Reflect and Light Screen, which could aid your teammates.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs look complex, but are actually very simple. The Speed EVs allow Bisharp to outrun minimum Speed Milotic, while Attack is maximized for the highest possible damage output. The rest of the EVs are placed into HP so that Bisharp can take advantage of its great typing and good Defense. It also beefs up Bisharp's Substitute. An alternative EV spread of fully invested Speed and Attack is also an option with a Jolly nature to tie with other positive natured base 70s. Life Orb is a better item for this more offensive set and Night Slash should be used over Substitute in order to hit Pokemon that try to set up on a predicted Sucker Punch, since Bisharp would lose too much HP with both Substitute and Life Orb.

Bisharp makes a good offensive combination with Mismagius: they cover each other's weaknesses almost perfectly, and can hit from both sides of the attacking spectrum. Bisharp similarly works well with Psychic-type teammates such as Mew or Deoxys-D, who can easily handle Fighting-types while appreciating Bisharp's knack for eliminating Ghost-types. Chandelure and Roserade have similar synergy with Bisharp, and have a way of breaking defensive nuisances such as Tangrowth and bulky Water-types, the latter of which can be a particularly problematic by resisting Iron Head and phazing away Substitute, Swords Dance, and Sucker Punch with Roar.

[Other Options]

Bisharp has a rather shallow movepool; nevertheless, there are some other moves that it can use to good effect. Most notable among these is Pursuit, allowing Bisharp to trap Ghost- and Psychic-types for your team. Pursuit is best used on an all-out attacking set though, since it has little utility with Swords Dance. Psycho Cut can rip Fighting-types to shreds, but Iron Head already deals massive damage to them. Stone Edge is a powerful attack in general, but its infamous accuracy leaves it as an undesirable option. There's nothing that Bisharp really needs to hit with Stone Edge anyway that its other moves can't hit, and it leaves Bisharp even more prone to Fighting-types. X-Scissor should only be used if Tangrowth is of huge concern, but it doesn't OHKO after a boost anyway and has redundant coverage with Bisharp's other moves. Thunder Wave can be used to slow down opponents early-game, allowing Bisharp to sweep with Swords Dance later on. Stealth Rock is an interesting option, but is sadly illegal with Sucker Punch. Bisharp could also use a Choice Band, but Pokemon can easily set up on Choice-locked Sucker Punches.

[Checks and Counters]

Cobalion is by far the the greatest threat to Bisharp. A quadruple resistance to Dark and the ability Justified make it a nigh perfect counter. Its massive Defense lets it take even boosted Brick Breaks, and it also resists Iron Head. Furthermore, it will always easily OHKO Bisharp with its STAB Fighting-type moves. Milotic and Tangrowth can stomach Bisharp's moves thanks to their great defensive stats. The former can use Haze or Dragon Tail to nullify Bisharp's boosts, burn it with Scald, and keep itself healthy with Recover. The latter can bypass Sucker Punch with Sleep Powder, and hit Bisharp hard with Earthquake or Hidden Power Fire. Other bulky Water-types such as Suicune, Swampert and Blastoise will easily shrug off Iron Head or Brick Break and Roar through any of Bisharp's other attacks. Should they have the chance to attack an unboosted, unprotected Bisharp, STAB Scald's burn is a big problem. Swampert can KO outright with STAB Earthquake. Arcanine similarly resists Iron Head, has the bulk to shake off Brick Break, and can Roar Bisharp away with ease, later recovering with Morning Sun. Given the right opportunity, it can destroy Bisharp with its STAB Fire-type attacks. Just be sure to use Flash Fire Arcanine, as Intimidate will only make Bisharp stronger. Zapdos rarely carries Roar, but it does learn the move and has excellent bulk in addition to Heat Wave, Roost, and nifty resistances to Steel- and Fighting-type attacks. Needless to say, any Fighting-type move will OHKO Bisharp, and Mach Punch and Vaccum Wave can even move before Sucker Punch, allowing Pokemon like Hitmonlee or Hitmontop to easily revenge kill it. Hitmontop should consider its Speed relative to Bisharp's, as the two Pokemon share the same base Speed, and be wary of the fact that Intimidate will only boost Bisharp's Attack.

[Dream World]

Bisharp recieves Pressure via the Dream World. While normally a decent ability, it's more suited to Pokemon designed to take multiple hits. Defiant is a far superior ability on an offensive Pokemon such as Bisharp, since a boost equivalent to that of Swords Dance whenever one of Bisharp's stats is lowered lets Bisharp rip through teams with even more ease, and circumvents Intimidate.

I used a spread of 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe just to outpace those 200s...I'm not sure how worth it the extra Speed is and the extra HP is always useful.

Yeah I also back Heysup's spread. I also talked it over with a few QC members and we think the main moveset should be:

name: Swords Dance
move1: Swords Dance
move2: Sucker Punch
move3: Substitute
move4: Iron Head / Brick Break
item: Leftovers
ability: Defiant
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe

(Night Slash and LO in AC)

EDIT: My bad, I mixed up LO and leftovers.

You should change the EVs to what Heysup posted and move Jolly to AC. I think PK Gaming would agree, he just forgot to update the EV spread.

Do that and this is QC APPROVED 1/3

Could you mention mismagius as a partner? As It is immune to Earthquake and has an offensive prescence the opposite of bisharp (ie bisharp is physically offensive and mismagius is specially offensive) and helps spinblock. You are still murdered by cobalion though.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that mismagius draws in ghost/dark attacks, which bisharp can use to set up on, as he resists them.

I'm gonna have a detailed look over this when it's written up, so VM / PM me when it's written up and before you put it up for GP checks so I can check it

this is now written, but moo requested to take a look at it before it's GP checked, for reasons unknown ;)

This was really good, though there were some beefs I had with content itself-- nothing regarding directly to your writing on Bisharp itself.

Good work!
