Taunt Dance Gyarados [QC 0/3]

[SET]
Name: Taunt Dance
Move 1: Dragon Dance
Move 2: Taunt
Move 3: Bounce
Move 4: Waterfall
Item: Lum Berry/Leftovers
Ability: Moxie
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 HP / 252 Spe

Overview

Gyarados is an awesome psuedo-dragon pokemon with great speed and excellent attack stats, and best of all a STAB combination that is only resisted by three pokemon (Lanturn, Empoleon, Rotom-W) of only one is a regular feature in OU which gives you more room to use other moves such as Taunt. Taunt stops other mons from setting up on you, or better yet, stops walls such as Chansey, Ferrothorn, Skarmory and Quagsire from ruining the day and with an intact lum berry, even Sableye and Jellicent are left in ruins.

Why does this deserve to be on-site?

  • STAB, hardly resisted Flying/Water is all Gyra needs to go on a moxie sweep.
  • Lum Berry to provide set-up opportunities or prevent opponents from stopping your moxie sweep. Works well with taunt too.
  • Bounce for it's 30% side effect, paralysis
  • Waterfall for it's flinch rate and reliability
  • Taunt to stop physical walls from setting up hazards or stalling you to death

Additional Comments

  • Prefers some SR support in the team to finish those important OHKOs
  • Could also use a Rapid Spinner to make it last longer though it already has respectable bulk to begin with for a sweeper
  • Works exceptionally well in rain team as well
Teammates and Counters

  • Taunt has removed a couple of threats to Gyradous but electric pokemon, especially the over, overused Rotom-W will always be there to terrorize it. Terrakion might OHKO it as well if it catches Gyra without its DD boost. Sableye WoWing it without it's Lum Berry usually spells the end of it's sweep as well. Ferrothorn is a bit tricky, on one hand it will almost be rendered entirely useless without the ability to leech, SR or T-wave as well as it's pathetic, not very effectivey Gyroball will hardly harass Gyra. On the other hand Powerwhip and the indirect damage dealt by Iron Barbs will hurt, especially if Gyra fails to 2HKO it.
  • Celebi or any Grass pokemon is appreciated to take down it's electric nemesis.
There is an existing Moxie DD set on site but it lacks Taunt and Lum berry and at the same time the bulky dancer set is well, too bulky and doesn't employ moxie either.

I'd nominate Ferrothorn as a counter, because it can Leech Seed / Thunder Wave before you Taunt, or on the switch-in, and Bounce doesn't do a great damage anyway. Ice Fang must be mentioned in AC, other than that, i'm surprised this set isn't already in the site. Good job :)

Make Lefties the main slash. It allow you to setup easier on EVERYTHING. Only thing Lum do is prevent a Scald burn from the likes of defensive toed/jellicent.

Give also Intimidate a mention since its now a bulky setup sweeper. It also helps on offensive team when you lack a check to Lucario, Terrakion, Landorus, SD Virizion, etc etc

Just how does Ferrothorn Leech Seed/TWave before the Taunt? Anyway, Leftovers should definetly be the main item. You're already stopping status with taunt. Mabye lum can get an AC mention? Also this set might benefit from a bulkier EV spread... Intimidate is certainly still a viable option

ferrothorn should be mentioned in counters, since resists waterfall and bounce and can hit with power whip or gyro ball

Um Mynism what you want is already on-site:

http://www.smogon.com/bw/pokemon/gyarados

This isn't a bulky sweeper set, this is a Hyper Offensive set that goes around status inducers and hazard setters/phazers while fully abusing the DD boost by maximizing Atk and Speed.

Lum Berry does so much more than block occasional Scald Burns, it blocks all status. On second thought Leftovers can help with those SR switch ins and you can rely on Taunt instead to prevent status that aren't the outcome of secondary effects/pranksters.

Finally Ferrothorn doesn't resist bounce nor is Gyroball effective since Gyra is a part Water type. However his Iron Barbs ability and Powerwhip will give it a hard time, especially if Gyra fails to 2HKO it, so I'll give it a mention in the counter section.

yeah, this is just the existing offensive DD set with Taunt and a different item. Furthermore, I can't see what Taunt has over Substitute here. You're still vulnerable to Scald burns, Body Slams etc and you can't use Taunt to give yourself a buffer against a revenge kill (Volt Switch...) or to ease prediction on a switch. Skarmory and Ferrothorn will just beat you down with their 120BP STAB attacks and Quagsire will fish for a Scald burn. There's some situational advantages (stopping slower things like 'Durr or Gorebyss from setting up alongside you for instance) but Substitute or a third coverage move will almost always be better in my opinion.

Well for starters it prevents pokemon like Skarmory and Quagsire from laughing at your face with Whirlwind, Toxic/Recover, etc. The side effects from Scalds and Body Slam is covered with the lum berry.

While this set holds some advantages over other sets, it is fairly situational. Overall the Substitute + Dragon Dance and the Bulky Dragon Dance sets are more useful than this one, but there are a few instances where this set would be better... Also as mentioned earlier Substitute is almost always superior to Taunt, with Taunt having the only advantage of being able to stop phazers and stat-upers. Almost zero pokes would set-up on Gyarados's face anyway so Taunt is only really useful for stopping phazers in comparison with Substitute.

This means that this set does not deserve a whole analysis and it can just be mentioned in the AC of an existing set.
It can be mentioned either on the Bulky Dragon Dance, which has exactly the same moves, or in the Offensive Dragon Dance, which has the same spread so a mention of Taunt and Lum Berry would suffice!

The beauty of this set is the inability of most walls being sent to stop you to halt the Moxie sweep as many who have watched my recent battles where able to observe.

Preventing Nites from Dancing, cripplers from statusing you and even hazard setters from doing their job usually means an additional boost and if Gyrados just goes on and keep collecting boosts it's pretty much gameover.

The manner in which you guys ultimately decide to include this on-site, but adding this to an existing AC or making it as a new set doesn't matter, I truly believe that it's a good set and deserves to be mentioned.

These logs only show how Sub is better in most situations. Your set deserves an AC mention because it does some things that other sets don't, but those things are very few to guarantee a whole set.

Substitute is better than Taunt honestly. Last generation, Taunt was superior because of the prevalence of Pokemon such as Swampert, Breloom, and the fact that Rotom-W did not resist Waterfall. Substitute blocks status, whereas Taunt doesn't really give Gyarados any benefit if the opponent uses a status move. Being able to effectively stop Volt Switch Rotom-W's from beating Gyarados is a huge benefit; Gyarados can also sponge weak attacks like a monster and boost its Attack to sky high levels with Moxie if the opponent decides to sacrifice something to break the Substitute. Taunt simply does not have this appeal. It should be mentioned in AC, no more no less.

There's already a Dragon Dance set with Taunt on it, and tbh I don't get the point of this set. In all honesty we could just put Taunt in the AC of the Offensive DD set, or slash it in if QC deems it to be that good.

After talking to Setsuna, we've decided that it'd be better to just add a mention of Taunt on the Substitute + Dragon Dance set's Additional Comments. I already did that, explaining it turns Skarmory into set-up fodder but is now at risk against the common Scald users such as Politoed and Jellicent.
