Hypno (QC 3/3) [GP 2/2]

I hate you Probopass

[Overview]

When one looks at Hypno, they'll see a wannabe hypnotist with a big nose and a very shabby pendulum. However, after looking past its awful exterior, one will find an excellent supporter and a suprisingly decent sweeper in the NU metagame. All of its stats, outside of its base 115 Special Defense, are average. Its Speed sits dismally at base 67, but it does have access to a great support move in Trick Room. Furthermore, it has acess to both Baton Pass and Nasty Plot, allowing it to easily set up so that a teammate can sweep. It also has access to Wish, dual screens, and status moves in the form of Toxic and Thunder Wave. Underestimating Hypno based on its awful appearance can easily lead to one's downfall, as it can support its teammates with a plethora of moves like no other.

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Wish
move 2: Protect
move 3: Toxic / Thunder Wave
move 4: Seismic Toss
item: Leftovers
ability: Insomnia
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This is Hypno's standard wall set. It takes full advantage of Hypno's decent base 85 HP and excellent base 115 Special Defense stats, allowing it to be a force to be reckoned with for special attackers. Wish is Hypno's only reliable form of recovery, and is very useful in tandem with Protect, especially since it can also heal one of Hypno's teammates. Toxic is the preferred option in the third slot, letting Hypno cripple walls and stall out the opposition with the help of Wish + Protect. However, Thunder Wave is also an option, letting Hypno cripple sweepers that think they can have a field day with it. Finally, Seismic Toss provides Hypno with consistent damage, hitting every Pokemon in the game, bar Ghost-types, for 100 points of damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs for this set are self-explanatory, allowing Hypno to reach 374 HP and 361 Special Defense. Insomnia is the ability of choice, stopping Pokemon such as Amoongus from beating Hypno at its own game. Leftovers is the item of choice, giving Hypno a way to reliably restore its HP outside of Wish. Psychic is an option in the fourth slot over Seismic Toss, but Hypno's Special Attack stat is only 182 without any investment, so it is not as useful. Dual screens are also an option, but Hypno doesn't really have enough room in its moveset to run them.

Fighting- and Steel-type Pokemon are helpful partners, as they can absorb the Dark- and Bug-type attacks that can crush Hypno. Physically bulky Pokemon are also very important, as Hypno has a very difficult time taking physical attacks. It also appreciates cleric support, as Toxic can completely cripple and ruin Hypno. Finally, Rapid Spin support is helpful since entry hazards reduce Hypno's walling capabilities, but it isn't completely necessary.

[SET]
name: Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Shadow Ball
move 4: Trick Room / Baton Pass
item: Leftovers
ability: Insomnia
nature: Quiet / Modest
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Unlike the support set, this set attempts to utilize Hypno's access to Nasty Plot and Trick Room to deal major damage to the opposition while providing set-up for its teammates. Nasty Plot is the crux of this set, boosting Hypno's Special Attack stat to usable levels. Psychic is Hypno's main STAB move, and Shadow Ball hits opposing Psychic-types that resist Psychic. Steel-types aren't too common in NU, and Probopass, which is one of the most common Steel-types in NU, can't really touch Hypno. The final slot is reserved for Trick Room, which allows Hypno to outspeed a large variety of threats when it is in effect. However, Baton Pass is also an option, allowing Hypno to pass its boosts to a teammate.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs are self explanatory, maximizing Hypno's Special Attack and HP stats, providing it with power and bulk, respectively. If Trick Room is used, one should use a Quiet nature with 0 Speed IVs; if Baton Pass is used, a Modest nature should be chosen. Insomnia stops Hypno from being put to sleep, preventing threats such as Amoongus from causing it problems. Leftovers provides Hypno with reliable recovery.

Psyshock is an option over Psychic to hit special walls harder, but Psychic hits the majority of the metagame harder. Focus Blast is an option over Shadow Ball, but generally is not as useful as Shadow Ball. If Trick Room is being used, teammates that can take advantage of it, such as Lairon, are recommended. Special attacking teammates, such as Magmortar and Haunter, are necessary if Hypno is running Baton Pass. Hypno also appreciates entry hazard support, as it lets it net many more kills.

[Other Options]

Hypno doesn't have too many viable other options. A Calm Mind set is usable, but Hypno doesn't have a reliable recovery outside of Wish + Protect, meaning it will be forced to be mono-attacking, which hurts this set's viability. Hypno's low Speed also means that Taunt and Substitute aren't too useful. Switcheroo is an option on a choice set, but Hypno's low attacking stats and Speed greatly hurt its viability as a scarfer. Finally, Hypno's signature move, Hypnosis, is usable, but its awful accuracy makes it a much less appealing option.

[Checks and Counters]

Due to Hypno's poor Defense stat, most physical attackers can easily knock it out; Dark- and Bug-types are the best choices for this. Toxic is a good choice for destroying the support set, as Hypno will end up stalling itself out with Wish + Protect; Toxic Spikes are also good for this reason. Duosion can also take on the support set with ease, and can easily beat the Nasty Plot set if Hypno lacks Shadow Ball. Pokemon such as Skuntank and Metang are also great counters to all variants of Hypno, being able to demolish it easily with their respective STAB moves.
