[Overview]

Though uncommon, Pinsir is arguably one of the best physical sweepers available in NU. With an incredible base 125 Attack stat and great coverage with X-Scissor, Stone Edge, and Close Combat, Pinsir can shred through the tier after a Swords Dance boost. Mold Breaker allows Pinsir to bypass abilities such as Levitate and Unaware, meaning Pinsir is one of just a few Pokemon who can hit Quagsire with boosted moves. Pinsir's base 85 Speed is a double-edged sword. On one hand, Pinsir is among the fastest Pokemon in NU, as the majority of the tier resides below or around base 80 Speed. On the other, Pinsir has an unfortunate Speed tie with Sawk, whom many Pokemon aim to outspeed. Additionally, when equipped with a Choice Scarf, Pinsir just barely misses outpacing Timid Gorebyss at +2 Speed, which would otherwise be fantastic. That's not the end of Pinsir's woes; its middling defenses make it easy pickings for faster Pokemon, such as Swellow, Rotom-S, and Jynx. Any form of status, most notably burn, will bring Pinsir's sweep to an end. Despite its flaws, Pinsir should not be overlooked—with the proper setup, Pinsir can devastate teams in the blink of an eye.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: X-Scissor
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Earthquake / Close Combat
item: Life Orb
ability: Mold Breaker
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Swords Dance multiplies Pinsir's Attack to sky-high levels, allowing it to smash through walls and bulkier Pokemon with ease. After a boost, Pinsir can 2HKO every Pokemon in NU sans Eviolite Misdreavus and Frillish. X-Scissor provides a powerful, reliable STAB move and is Pinsir's weapon of choice. Stone Edge provides solid coverage with X-Scissor, dealing hefty damage to Flying-types that would otherwise wall Pinsir to no end. The fourth moveslot is simply a question of preference; Earthquake allows Pinsir to hit foes with Levitate, such as Eelektross and Weezing, and is Pinsir's most reliable attack against Fire-types such as Magmortar, while Close Combat has more power and better coverage than Earthquake in general. Both moves are Pinsir's best options against bulky Rock-types such as Golem and Regirock, and the difference is minimal, so the decision between the two is entirely preferential.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Maximum Speed EVs and a Jolly nature make the most out of Pinsir's base 85 Speed stat, and the rest of the EVs are invested in Attack. An Adamant nature drastically increases Pinsir's damage output, but it also allows many dangerous Pokemon to outspeed Pinsir, such as Magmortar, Mesprit, and Jolly Absol. Although Pinsir outspeeds the vast majority of NU, there are several faster Pokemon that need to be handled before attempting to sweep, including Swellow, Cinccino, Rotom-S, Jynx, and Choice Scarf users such as Braviary. Therefore, Thunder Wave support from Pokemon such as Rotom-S, Regirock, and Mesprit is a huge boon to Pinsir. Regirock gets special mention for handling opposing Swellow and Braviary, making Pinsir's life much easier. Magmortar can easily switch in on and OHKO both Misdreavus and Weezing, should you choose to run Close Combat instead of Mold Breaker Earthquake. Alomomola can take a few hits and stall it out with Life Orb recoil and Toxic damage, so a Pokemon that can handle Alomomola is an excellent teammate. Grass-types such as Serperior, Leafeon, and Amoonguss all handle Alomomola relatively well, as the former two can create a Substitute and set up on it, whereas Amoonguss is immune to Toxic and can put Alomomola to sleep with Spore.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: X-Scissor
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Earthquake
item: Choice Band
ability: Mold Breaker
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

A Choice Band allows Pinsir to establish its presence off the bat with incredibly powerful attacks. X-Scissor is Pinsir's primary STAB move, 2HKOing most Pokemon that do not resist it. For example, when coupled with Stealth Rock and a layer of Spikes, Pinsir's X-Scissor nets a 2HKO on physically defensive Quagsire, Tangela, and even offensive Rotom-S. Stone Edge nails Flying-types such as Braviary, Swellow, and Rotom-S that have no issues coming in on Pinsir's other moves. Because Pinsir requires no boosting move on this set, both Close Combat and Earthquake can be utilized. However, Close Combat is usually the better option when deciding between which one of the two to use, as it's more powerful than Earthquake and the Defense and Special Defense drops are negated when Pinsir switches out.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Although Jolly is the preferred nature to outspeed prominent Pokemon, such as Magmortar and Mesprit, an Adamant one can be used instead to significantly increase Pinsir's power and guarantee several 2HKOs. The Speed loss when using Adamant is less important when using a Choice Band, as Pinsir will be switching in and out frequently anyway. Regardless, paralysis support is very handy and can often help Pinsir complete a late-game sweep. Regirock provides a plethora of assistance to Pinsir, as it can spread paralysis easily with Thunder Wave, set up Stealth Rock to wear down Pinsir's counters, and handle Swellow and Choice Scarf Braviary, both of whom terrorize Pinsir. Although this set hits much harder off the bat, Alomomola and Misdreavus still have no trouble walling Pinsir. Therefore, teammates who switch in and KO both of these Pokemon are necessary. If Leafeon can avoid coming in on a Toxic or Will-O-Wisp, it can set up a Substitute, Swords Dance, then KO with a boosted Leaf Blade. Leafeon also benefits heavily from Pinsir's ability to 2HKO Tangela with X-Scissor. Life Orb Magmortar has little issue switching in on Alomomola and Misdreavus and can OHKO them with Thunderbolt and Fire Blast, respectively. A Rapid Spin user is absolutely vital to this set to prevent Pinsir from taking 25% or more damage on every switch-in. Wartortle is a solid choice, as it can tank hits from Swellow and Braviary as well as lure bulky Grass-types for Pinsir to KO with X-Scissor.

[Other Options]

Pinsir doesn't have very many options outside of those listed. A Choice Scarf set seems viable but is entirely outclassed by Sawk, who has STAB Close Combat, Sturdy, and a resistance to Stealth Rock. Bulk Up is an interesting option, but Pinsir's pitiful special bulk discourages such a set. Knock Off is a useful move in its own right, removing items such as Eviolite, Leftovers, and Choice Scarf, but Pinsir generally can't afford to give up a coverage slot. Pinsir has access to Stealth Rock, so a lead set with X-Scissor, Stone Edge, and Close Combat may be viable. Quick Attack is Pinsir's only priority move, but it's incredibly weak and not worth using over a coverage move. Toxic nails most of Pinsir's common switch-ins, most notably Misdreavus, Rotom-S, and Alomomola.

[Checks and Counters]

Misdreavus can shrug off any of Pinsir's moves, even at +2, and burn Pinsir with Will-O-Wisp. Alomomola can absorb a boosted X-Scissor and Toxic Pinsir, then alternate between Wish, Protect, and Waterfall (Pinsir may try to Swords Dance on a Protect) to stall Pinsir out. Faster Fire- and Flying-types such as Simisear, Choice Scarf Braviary, and Swellow can outspeed and OHKO Pinsir with their respective STAB moves. Rotom-S can switch in on any of Pinsir's moves, sans Stone Edge, and either burn it with Will-O-Wisp or simply KO it with Air Slash. Stealth Rock and other entry hazards are the most efficient way of keeping Pinsir in check, as it will lose 25% or more on every switch-in.

[Dream World]

Moxie is an excellent ability, boosting Pinsir's Attack after every KO. If Mold Breaker isn't necessary, this should be the primary ability on every set when released.

Replace Klingklang with another levitator, he's RU. Beyond that this looks fine, imo. We also had the chat about scarf Pinsir on IRC and I support your decision of excluding it.

Regardless, paralysis support is very handy and can often help Pinsir complete a late-game sweep. Regirock provides a plethora of assistance to Pinsir, as it can spread paralysis easily with Thunder Wave, set up Stealth Rock to wear down Pinsir's counters, and handle Swellow and Choice Scarf Braviary, both of whom who terrorize Pinsir. Although this set hits much harder off the bat, Alomomola and Misdreavus still have no trouble walling Pinsir. Therefore, teammates who can switch in and KO both of these Pokemon are necessary. A spinner is absolutely vital to this set to prevent Pinsir from taking 25% or more damage on every switch-in. Wartortle is a solid choice, as it can tank hits from Swellow and Braviary, as well as lure bulky Grass-types for Pinsir to KO with X-Scissor.

[Other Options]

Pinsir doesn't have very many options outside of those listed. A Choice Scarf set seems viable, but is entirely outclassed by Sawk, who has STAB Close Combat, Sturdy, and a resistance to Stealth Rock.
