[Overview]

Although it might appear to be just another common Flying-type, Braviary stands proud above its NU allies. With a massive base 123 Attack stat, a decent base 80 Speed stat, and STAB Brave Bird, Braviary is definitely a Pokemon to look out for. Although it lacks Roost, Braviary makes up for this with its higher bulk, which is the main reason to use it over Swellow; moreover, Braviary's access to Superpower also lets it decimate Rock-types with ease. Its movepool is somewhat lacking, but Braviary has everything it needs to scare away the opponent. Brave Bird's nasty recoil and a weakness to Stealth Rock means it won't be around for long, but don't take it lightly, or Braviary will tear you and your team apart.

[SET COMMENTS]

Braviary's massive Attack and usable Speed make Choice items ideal for it. Brave Bird is Braviary's most powerful STAB move; it decimates the common Fighting- and Grass-types in the tier, and even 2HKOes Tangela. Superpower makes Probopass and Bastiodon think twice before switching in, while U-turn helps Braviary scout the opponent's counter to it. Rock Slide provides coverage against Flying-types, such as Rotom-S and Altaria, and receives a nifty boost from Sheer Force.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The item choice is down to personal preference; Choice Scarf helps Braviary overcome its average Speed and turns it into a decent revenge killer, while Choice Band provides a boost to Braviary's attacks and makes it even more deadly than before. An Adamant nature is recommended with a Choice Scarf for the additional power, while a Jolly nature works well with a Choice Band. Choice Scarf Braviary can use a Jolly nature to outrun Rock Polish Torterra, but the loss in power means it isn't recommended.

Bulky Rock- and Steel-types, such as Rhydon and Regirock, can be troublesome, making Fighting-types such as Sawk excellent teammates. Emboar and Magmortar are also good at blasting through Steel-types, but note that the latter adds another Stealth Rock weakness to your team. Rapid Spin support helps Braviary survive longer, making Cryogonal an excellent teammate. Furthermore, Cryogonal's great Special Defense gives it an easier time switching into specially based Electric- and Ice-type attacks. Opposing Choice Scarf users, particularly Rotom-S and Jynx, cause this set problems, so one should make sure to pack a bulky switch-in to them. Regirock is a decent choice, as it can comfortably switch into both Rotom-S and Jynx, threaten them with STAB Stone Edge, and set up Stealth Rock to cripple them.

[Other Options]

Braviary's movepool is terrible, to say the least. Return gains a STAB boost and deals heavy damage to anything that doesn't resist it, but it's unfortunately outclassed by Rock Slide. Bulk Up raises Braviary's Attack and Defense, but its average Speed means it's easily revenge killed after a boost. Whirlwind can let Braviary phaze away a counter and rack up entry hazard damage, while Tailwind temporarily raises Braviary's Speed. Neither of these moves are very effective on Braviary as it lacks any form of recovery and is better suited to an offensive set.

[Checks and Counters]

The majority of Rock-types can switch into Brave Bird and threaten Braviary with their STAB moves, but none of them appreciate a Superpower to the face. Torkoal can burn Braviary with Will-O-Wisp and set up Stealth Rock, but Rock Slide deals hefty damage to it. Weezing can also burn Braviary with Will-O-Wisp and shock Braviary with Thunderbolt, but its lack of recovery makes it easy to wear down. Bulky Ampharos and Luxray can shrug off Brave Bird and strike back with STAB Electric-type moves, but again, they lack a reliable recovery move. Choice Scarf users, such as Jynx and Rotom-S, can outspeed Braviary and revenge kill it with Ice Beam or Thunderbolt, respectively. Stealth Rock takes its toll on Braviary, so keeping it on the field is very helpful. Uxie, Probopass, and Regirock are good Pokemon to set it up, while Ghost-types such as Haunter can block Rapid Spin.

[Unreleased]

Braviary receives Defiant from the Dream World, which increases its Attack when a Pokemon with Intimidate switches in. Intimidate isn't very common in NU, making Defiant a rather poor ability in general.

Return deserves a slash imo. Yes, it hits almost nothing harder than Brave Bird, Superpower or Rock Slide, but the main thing you want to use Return is for a reliable STAB attack. Brave Bird is great, but the recoil kinda sucks. If you're up with Braviary as your last Pokemon, you can still win by using Return if the Ghost and Rock-types are gone.

I don't like "additionally" since it sounds clunky imo, but you can use it if you want. Something I'm not sure about is whether or not Defiant actually works that way; the Smogon page says "The Pokemon gains a two stage boost to Attack for each stage another stat is lowered by."

Other than that, aaaaah so perfect .-.

Defiant does increase the Pokemon's Attack stat by 2 stages for each stat lowered by the opponent, but such moves are uncommon (if used at all) in any tier, so Intimidate is the main thing to take advantage of. So the Unreleased section is good as it is.

small nitpick:

Emboar and Magmortar are also good at blasting through Steel-types, but note that they add another Stealth Rock weakness to your team
Emboar is part fighting is it not? That would mean that it has a SR neutrality, not another weakness.
