[Overview]

Metang is another NFE Pokemon bolstered by the addition of Eviolite. Its defenses are above average, its Attack stat is just high enough to dent the opponent, and its great typing grants it eight resistances, an immunity to Poison-type moves, and only two weaknesses. Metang's support movepool is pretty nifty, containing gems such as Reflect, Light Screen, and Stealth Rock, but its lack of a reliable recovery move outside of Rest makes it difficult to set up. A variety of setup moves can be used to raise its stats, but Metang is much better off supporting its teammates with Stealth Rock. Metang is rather slow, but don't let that deter you, it can be a real star on your team.

[SET]
name: Tank
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Meteor Mash
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Earthquake
item: Eviolite
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Thanks to its respectable bulk, numerous resistances, and access to Stealth Rock, Metang makes an amazing team supporter. Some of the main merits of using Metang are its abilities to use Eviolite and to take on the numerous Flying-types in the tier. Furthermore, the majority of Flying-types in the tier carry Choice items, forcing them to switch out and face devastating Stealth Rock damage upon switching in again. Meteor Mash provides reliable STAB, Toxic can cripple bulky Pokemon, and Earthquake hits Steel- and Fire-types that resist Meteor Mash.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs focus on Metang's Defense and HP. Maximum HP and Defense investment make Metang as physically bulky as possible, giving it the ability to take on Flying-types with ease. A specially defensive set can also be considered to take on Ice- and Grass-types, but Flying-types are a bigger threat in NU, and a Pokemon specialized to counter them is preferred.

Pokemon who can support Metang with Wish are helpful teammates. Audino and Alomomola are excellent choices to pass Wish, while the latter also has the benefit of resisting Fire-type attacks. Pokemon who can switch into Metang's weaknesses are helpful as well. Altaria can switch into Ground- and Fire-type moves and force switches while setting up with Dragon Dance. Haunter can switch into Ground-type moves and stop Rapid Spin attempts. Finally, Flash Fire Pokemon, such as Rapidash, can take advantage of Metang's ability to lure Fire-types.

[Other Options]

A dual screens set can be used with Light Clay, but losing Eviolite makes Metang significantly easier to KO. A Choice set can be used with any combination of ThunderPunch, Ice Punch, Zen Headbutt, Meteor Mash, and Trick, but Metang has better things it can be doing. Agility or Rock Polish could be used to raise its Speed, but Metang lacks the raw power to sweep after a boost. Hone Claws is in a similar boat; while it raises Metang's Attack and accuracy, Metang itself is rather slow and difficult to sweep with. Rest can be used with a Chesto Berry as a semi-reliable means of recovery, but again, it forces Metang to forgo its Eviolite.

[Checks and Counters]

Ground- and Fire-types easily counter Metang. Torkoal can switch into any of Metang's attacks, burn it with Will-O-Wisp, and spin away Stealth Rock. Simisear, Magmortar, and Rapidash can use their powerful STAB moves to blast their way through Metang's defenses, but they need to watch out for Earthquake. Metang won't be doing a lot to the majority of Ground-types, either. Torterra and Marowak can switch into any of Metang's attacks, threaten it with Earthquake, and send it to a quick demise. Bulky Water-types also fare well against Metang, provided they stay away from Toxic. Alomomola can stall it with a combination of Wish and Protect, but is severely crippled by Toxic. Seismitoad can switch into Metang with little trouble, threaten it with Earth Power, and sweep under the rain. Anything with a reasonably high Defense stat and a way to deal with Toxic can spell doom for Metang. Meganium, Leafeon, and Audino are all great choices for removing Toxic. Finally, Metang is completely shut down by Taunt, and its mediocre attacking power makes ita poor threat . Metang isn't dangerous; its main purpose is to set up Stealth Rock, so you don't need a dedicated counter to take it out.
