[Overview]

While it might not look the part, Munchlax is without a doubt the top special wall in the RU tier, capable of enduring onslaughts from the tier's top special attackers, including Lilligant and Moltres. Munchlax possesses astounding special bulk thanks to Eviolite, and while Normal isn't an ideal defensive typing, Thick Fat somewhat compensates for this, giving Munchlax incredibly useful resistances to Fire- and Ice-type attacks. While Munchlax can effortlessly wall a large portion of special attackers in RU, it still has quite a few exploitable aspects. The myriad of Fighting-types in the tier are capable of breaking through Munchlax without much trouble. Munchlax lacks reliable recovery, so it has to settle with Rest, which BW's sleep mechanics aren't kind to. Lastly, Munchlax happens to be the slowest Pokemon in the entire tier, meaning it can be worn down before being able to recover.

move 3: Body Slam
move 4: Whirlwind
item: Eviolite
ability: Thick Fat
nature: Careful
evs: 76 HP / 200 Def / 232 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This set takes advantage of Munchlax's incredible bulk to put a stop to nearly every one of the RU tier's special attackers, making Munchlax a valuable asset to many teams. Rest provides Munchlax with full recovery, in addition to healing status. While BW's sleep mechanic's have made Rest unusable for some Pokemon, thanks to its immense bulk, Munchlax can usually survive the sleep turns and wake up with a fair amount of HP. Sleep Talk allows Munchlax to function to some degree while he is asleep, possibly drawing Whirlwind to phaze any opponents trying to set up on a sleeping Munchlax. STAB Body Slam allows Munchlax to do decent damage to frail sweepers such as Jynx, and grants it a 30% chance to paralyze its opponent. Body Slam also means that Munchlax isn't completely shut down by Taunt. Whirlwind rounds out the set, enabling Munchlax to shuffle to opponent's team around, and rack up entry hazard damage. Whirlwind works exceptionally well on Munchlax, as it already walls so many Pokemon.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread maximizes Munchlax's ability to sponge hits. The spread specifically avoids a 2HKO from Sceptile's Life Orb-boosted Focus Blast after taking Stealth Rock damage; additionally, Entei's Choice Band-boosted Stone Edge fails to 2HKO Munchlax after Stealth Rock damage. Return is an option, but it is only slightly more powerful than Body Slam, and the chance of paralysis from Body Slam is much more useful. As Munchlax walls Pokemon such as Mesprit and Jynx with ease, Pursuit can be used to damage them as they flee, but even when hitting super effectively, Pursuit's damage output rather is disappointing without significant EV investment and STAB. Toxic is useful for wearing down Uxie and Mesprit, as Whirlwind will have little effect on them due to their immunity to both forms of Spikes. Fire Punch prevents Ferroseed from setting up Leech Seed and Spikes on Munchlax, but is fairly useless otherwise.

Munchlax doesn't take strong physical hits very well, so pairing it up with a physical wall is a good idea. Tangrowth is one of the better defensive partners for Munchlax. Tangrowth can take physical hits for Munchlax, while Munchlax can sponge any Fire- and Ice-type attacks aimed at Tangrowth thanks to Thick Fat. Hazard support is recommended as Munchlax can easily shuffle most teams around with Whirlwind, due to the fact that it walls so many special attackers. Qwilfish can lay down both Spikes and Toxic Spikes, and thanks to Intimidate and its Poison typing, it makes for an excellent switch-in<add space>to the Fighting-types that Munchlax fears. Munchlax appreciates Rapid Spin support as hazards will wear it down quickly due to the lack of reliable recovery. Sandslash can spin for Munchlax while also forming a solid defensive core with it. It's a good idea to pair Munchlax up with a cleric that can awake Munchlax after it has used Rest, and rid it of Toxic and burns. Uxie can take Fighting-type attacks for Munchlax and wake it up with Heal Bell.

[Other Options]

Munchlax can use a Curse set, but with base 78 Attack, it takes a lot of boosts before it can sweep, and even after a Curse, Munchlax has trouble taking hits from a large portion of the RU tier's physical attackers. Counter is an interesting option, but Munchlax finds it rather difficult to find room for it on its moveset. Odor Sleuth can be used so that Munchlax can hit Ghost-types with its STAB attacks, but Crunch can accomplish this without taking up an extra moveslot. Munchlax also has access to Stockpile and Amnesia. The former is usually outclassed by Curse, while the latter isn't particularly useful, because Munchlax already walls most special attackers. Other notable attacks include Double-Edge, Ice Punch, Pursuit, Zen Headbutt, and Rock Slide, but they either provide redundant coverage with Munchlax's common attacks, or are outclassed by said attacks.

[Checks and Counters]

Munchlax has severe trouble getting past most Ghost-types in the tier. Munchlax can't touch Cofagrigus or Dusknoir if it lacks Crunch, and is crippled by them due to Will-O-Wisp. Haunter and Misdreavus completely wall Munchlax if it lacks Crunch; the former has Pain Split to leech off Munchlax's large HP stat, while the latter can use a combination of Perish Song and Mean Look to trap and eliminate Munchlax. While Munchlax's Defense is passable with Eviolite, strong Fighting-types dispose of Munchlax the quickest; Medicham, Primeape, and Gallade can all take a Body Slam from Munchlax and OHKO with Close Combat, or Hi Jump Kick in Medicham's case. The best Munchlax can do to Quagsire is to phaze it out with Whirlwind, while it can use Scald to cripple Munchlax. Ferroseed walls Munchlax and wears it down with a combination of Leech Seed and Power Whip. Munchlax hates status, especially Toxic and Burn, which render it practically useless. Finally, Munchlax is very weak to Taunt as numerous Pokemon, such as Gallade and Aerodactyl can easily set up on its Body Slam, while Mesprit, and Rotom-F have Trick to strip Munchlax of its Eviolite and lock it into one move, which is a nightmare for any defensive Pokemon.

[Unreleased]

Munchlax gets Gluttony as its Dream World ability. Gluttony is an interesting ability, but it's definitely not worth forgoing the bulk from Eviolite and the useful resistances provided by Thick Fat.

One of the major things that Munchlax needed an update for was its EV spread. The current spread was used back in the days of Stage 1 to avoid the 2HKO from Alakazam's Life Orb Focus Blast. That isn't a problem anymore. I think the new benchmark to shoot for should be avoiding the 2HKO from Life Orb Sceptile's Focus Blast after Stealth Rock. Therefore, I think the new spread should be 64 HP / 192 Def / 252 SpD Careful. This puts the least amount of investment in HP as possible to increase your defensive survivability overall, since Munchlax's HP is a lot higher than both its Defense and Special Defense. The extra Defense comes in handy for Entei (which Munchlax is a hard counter to), and surviving random +2 Sceptile Leaf Blades and +1 Klinklang Gear Grinds.

I haven't seen a Curselax since early R1. I know it still exists because the moveset stats say so, but I literally never see it and haven't heard of anyone using it on a successful team, so my guess is those stats come from the lower end of the ladder, or from people trying the set out and then realizing it's not worth it. I honestly think Curse is just not a good move this generation except in very specific cases (Quagsire). It sort of works on paper, but the metagame is just too fast for a slow, non-threatening Pokemon to waste turns setting up. Offensively, it's very rarely going to do much real damage before it's forced to Rest and switch out, and defensively, you're giving up on valuable phazing and paralysis support in exchange for taking a few physical attackers on better (although most of the ones you wall at +1, you wall anyway)--until you're forced to Rest and switch out to your mandatory cleric. Move it to OO.

For the unreleased section I think you meant "not worth losing Thick Fat" instead of "not worth losing eviolite"

Maybe a sentence or two about how thick fat is integral to munchlax's success? Probably not completely necessary but a sentence or two couldn't hurt :P

Munchlax needs a Berry for Gluttony to work, and that means no Eviolite. I'll mention that losing Thick Fat sucks too though.

And yeah, I'll be sure to emphasize Thick Fat in the write up!

The EV spread can be optimized a little more: 76 HP / 200 Def / 232 SpD still avoids the 2HKO from LO Sceptile after SR, but has slightly more physical bulk. A nice representation of Munchlax's physical durability is that CB Entei also never 2HKOes after SR, even with Stone Edge.

Finally, Munchlax is very weak to Taunt as numerous Pokemon, such as Gallade and Aerodactyl can easily set up on its Body Slam, while Mesprit, Rotom-F and Jynx have Trick to strip Munchlax of its Eviolite and lock it into one move, which is a nightmare for any defensive Pokemon.

[Unreleased]

Munchlax gets Gluttony as its Dream World ability. Gluttony is an interesting ability, but it's definitely not worth forgoing the bulk from Eviolite and the useful resistances provided by Thick Fat.

Last line of Check and Counters:
Finally, Munchlax is very weak to Taunt as numerous Pokemon, such as Gallade and Aerodactyl can easily set up on its Body Slam, while Mesprit, Rotom-F,(add comma) and Jynx have Trick to strip Munchlax of its Eviolite and lock it into one move, which is a nightmare for any defensive Pokemon.
Also Dry Skin + Trick is illegal on Jynx, so you might want to take that out.

2nd sentence of SC
While BW's sleep mechanic's have made Rest unusable for some Pokemon, thanks to his its immense bulk, Munchlax can usually survive the sleep turns and wake up with a fair amount of HP.
you randomly put 'his' there even though you used 'its' throughout the analysis.
