Grumpypig

[Overview]
  • Thick Fat
  • 80 HP, 110 SpD
  • 90 SpA, 80 Spe
  • Good support movepool: Heal Bell, Thunder Wave, Dual Screens, Taunt
  • No recovery outside of Rest
  • Terrible base 65 Def
  • Weak to Pursuit
  • Weak to common moves- Dark, Ghost, Bug
  • Outclassed by other Psychic-types: Uxie, Mesprit, Slowking

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Heal Bell
move 2: Psyshock
move 3: Thunder Wave / Toxic
move 4: Taunt / Reflect / Protect
item: Leftovers
ability: Thick Fat
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Great SpD wall
  • Walls the likes of Moltres, Typhlosion, and Cryogonal due to Thick Fat
  • Heal Bell is good to support teammates
  • Psyshock is a good STAB move, hitting Roselia and Cryogonal harder than Psychic
  • Thunder Wave cripples fast sweepers that Grumpig will switch in on, such as Moltres, and also cripples switch-ins to Grumpig, such as Drapion
  • Toxic can be used to wear down opposing walls such as Slowking, and it can stall out the opponent with Protect
  • Protect also helps Grumpig gain more health back through Leftovers
  • Taunts prevents Pokemon such as Ferroseed from setting up
  • Reflect is good for strengthening its horrible base 65 Def

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • EVs maximize its SpD
  • Can use Rest and Sleep Talk in the last two slots- also has the chance to wake itself up if Sleep Talk selects Heal Bell
  • Focus Blast
  • Light Screen
  • Teammates- slow teammates who appreciate para support and dislike having status, such as Magmortar, Medicham, Nidoqueen
  • Teammates who appreciate having Moltres crippled, such as Escavalier
  • Grumpig appreciates Wish support as it doesn't have any reliable recovery- Clefable

[SET]
name: Dual Screens
move 1: Reflect
move 2: Light Screen
move 3: Psyshock
move 4: Thunder Wave / Heal Bell
item: Light Clay
ability: Thick Fat
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Base 80 Speed lets it set up screens before slower walls
  • Reflect should always be set up first, as Grumpig can take most special attacks but not physical attacks
  • Psyshock is a good STAB move to use when Taunted, and also takes care of Pokemon such as Cryogonal
  • Heal Bell is good for healing teammates, but Thunder Wave can be used to cripple an opponent, outspeed it, and set up the appropriate screen
  • Light Clay makes screens last longer etc.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • EVs maximize its SpD
  • An EV spread of 252 HP / 152 Def / 104 Spe can be used to always survive Jolly Life Orb Drapion's Crunch and set up Reflect for a teammate
  • Additionally, an EV spread of 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe with a Timid nature can be used to outspeed base 80 Speed Pokemon and below such as Medicham, Gallade, Kabutops, and Mesprit
  • Pokemon which can set up behind screens are good teammates, such as Omastar
  • Pokemon which can set up on Drapion and Spiritomb are appreciated, as they are the two biggest threats to Grumpig. Gallade and Klinklang are good for this reason

[Other Options]
  • RestTalk
  • Charge Beam
  • Energy Ball
  • Power Gem
  • Magic Coat
  • Rain Dance
  • Trick Room
  • Whirlwind
  • Trick
  • HP Fire
  • Calm Mind

[Checks and Counters]
  • Dark-types: Drapion, Spiritomb (both have pursuit), Crawdaunt
  • Ghost-types: Cofagrigus
  • Strong physical attackers such as Feraligatr, Druddigon
  • Pokemon which resist Psyshock, such as Aggron
  • Taunt- Mandibuzz (completely walls Grumpig)
  • Escavalier

Couple of thoughts-

I don't know why Heal Bell is included in the support set without any slashes. Sure it's a somewhat exclusive move, but two Pokemon that thoroughly outclass Grumpig, Uxie and Clefable, both get it also, so it's not the case that if you're using Grumpig it's because of Heal Bell. In my opinion Reflect is even more important, because Grumpig doesn't have the defensive stat to weather Pursuit like Uxie (not that Uxie loves Pursuits but it takes them better). The only mandatory move on the set seems to be Psyshock (maybe Reflect also), and then the last three slots (or two) would be support options.

Add Golurk to the counters list (even though it is now NU), because a STAB Iron Fist-boosted Shadow Punch will destroy Grumpig, and it is a a very heavy hitter in general.

It seems like the QC team is leaning on rejecting this, so can we please come to a decision :3 Grumpig does have a nice niche though in countering Nidoqueen and Moltres. Anyways I would like this to move along!

I would never use this over Uxie or Mesprit. Yes, Thick Fat is nice, but not enough to warrant using it. Not to mention it gets set up on by half the tier.

Wish granted.

QC REJECTED 1/3
