Hidden Grotto - RNGing for encounters using RNG Reporter 9.96.5 beta

The encounter slots for Hidden Grottoes are in the 5th Gen Tools drop-down menu. This guide will use the first two tabs on the encounter slot page, which are titled D-Black2 and D-White2. The percentage value listed next to each individual Pokémon is the percent the encounter can be female. Note that this doesn't match the actual gender ratio. There are 11 slots (listed vertically) and 4 sub-slots (listed horizontally).

Every 256th step the player takes is when every unoccupied Grotto will run a check to generate, and they generate in the order listed on the encounter slot page. The order is VERY important. Unlike the 128-step counter, this step counter is not saved. If you've played through the entire game without ever visiting a Grotto it's a safe bet to assume they're all filled. EVERY Hidden Grotto listed before the one you want to RNG the encounter in MUST be occupied by either an item (hidden or not) or a Pokémon. This is EXTREMELY important. Also, make sure the Day Care is holding no Pokémon. Walking with Pokémon in the Day Care will advance the PIDRNG past your target.

You'll want to save in the Grotto that you wish to RNG the encounter for. Have any Pokémon you may need (capture, sync, etc.). If it's occupied then take the item (which may or may not be hidden) or faint/capture the Pokémon prior to saving.

The example this guide will use is RNGing a female Vulpix from the Grotto in Abundant Shrine (labeled as Abundant [Field] in the encounter slot page). First, a picture and then the explanation on how to use the searcher:

Slot - The 11 slots that are listed vertically. Vulpix is 0 so check it.
SubSlot - The 4 horizontal slots. Vulpix is in all of them so check all of the boxes 0 to 3.
Gender - We want female so choose F. If you don't care you can leave it blank and it will display both M and F seeds. Leave blank for genderless Pokémon.
Gender Ratio - The percentage listed on the encounter table. NOT the actual ratio. Make sure you select the right one for it to filter through the proper gender in the search results. Leave blank for genderless. For Vulpix it's 10% so choose 10.

With that all filled out let's run the search:

You'll notice that you'll get a lot of results FAST. This is normal. Now pick one that you like (this example picks the highlighted one), copy the seed, and paste it into the main window with the proper settings like so:

While it probably isn't necessary to fill out the relevant encounter info (Hidden Grotto encounter type and gender ratio for the actual ratio of the Pokémon) this WILL be required when you actually RNG the Pokémon. Anyways, the purpose of doing this is to find out the starting PIDRNG frame of this seed. In this case it's 54, which matches the frame on the Time Finder. This means you do not have to do any PIDRNG advancements. Simply walk the 256 steps, leave, and re-enter the Grotto. If you have to do any advancements you need to do them before walking the 256 steps. There is no need to verify your seed via Chatot pitches for this as you will immediately know whether you hit your seed or not.

For RNGing the actual encounter it's almost the same as a stationary encounter, except use Hidden Grotto as the encounter type and it cannot be shiny. You MUST use the correct settings on the Time Finder and the main window or else you WILL get the wrong nature. This includes the actual gender ratio with the gender the encounter is set to. In this example you would use Female (25% Male/75% Female).

Made an edit to the part that describes Grotto Number after receiving some feedback. If there is anything else that doesn't seem clear please let me know.

Thanks for attempting to explain this to me, Hozu; though, I've still had no luck. I'm sure I'm not alone on this one, so instead of PMing you it's probably best to post it here.

I was trying to RNG a Chatot from the grotto on route 18.. This was the only unoccupied grotto there was, so I set Open Hollows to 1, Grotto Number 0, Slot 1, Subslot 0, 1, 2, 3, and Gender Ratio to 30%.

I copied the seed and input it into the main window, I set the method to Gen 5 PIDRNG, set the encounter type to Hidden Grotto, set the gender ratio to the pokemon's natural gender ratio (non-grotto), then I calculated the initial PIDRNG frame and it was conveniently the same as the frame of the seed from the Time Finder.

I started my DSLite, entered the game at the given time exactly, and entered the game where I left it - In the empty grotto. I walked 256 steps, left, then returned; there was nothing there! Not even a hidden item. I tried it again and came back to a pokeball!

What am I doing wrong? I've had a lot of trouble with an unreliable timer0, but I don't see how that would affect this. Do the grottos automatically regenerate every 256 steps, or is it a chance to regenerate?

Thanks in advance :)

I'm in the exact same boat. I've setup everything identical to Ourself, only that I'm RNGing for a DW female Herdier in Flocessy Ranch. I've done this 4 times now and the Grotto is still empty every time!

On Serebii, they say that there is a 5% that a Grotto regenerates whenever you walk 256 steps. Does this carry over to RNGing? Meaning, even after I hit the right seed, is there only a 5% of the Grotto regenerating and giving the Pokemon I want?

EDIT: Just got both Herdier and Combee, so Ourself, I think your timer0 fluctuates a LOT :( keep at it!

As of RNG reporter 9.96.3 beta, the encounter slots for Hidden Grottoes are in the 5th Gen Tools drop-down menu. Every 256th step the player takes is when every unoccupied Grotto will run a check to generate, and they generate in the order listed on the encounter slot page. The order is VERY important. Unlike the 128-step counter, this step counter is not saved so you can take 250 steps via Max Repel, save, reset, and then walk again without ever triggering the Grotto generation routine. This will help make sure that any empty Grotto you've come across won't fill up during the time you check every other Grotto. Also, if you've played through the entire game without ever visiting a Grotto it's a safe bet to assume they're all filled. You MUST know the status (occupied vs. not) of EVERY Grotto listed before the one you want to RNG in. This is EXTREMELY important. The order of generation matches the order they're listed on in the encounter table.

If it's occupied then take the item (which may or may not be hidden) or faint/capture the Pokémon.

The example this guide will use is RNGing a female Vulpix from the Grotto in Abundant Shrine (labeled as Abundant [field] in the encounter slot page). We will also assume that the following Grottoes are not occupied: Route 22, Abundant [field], and Route 2. First, a picture and then the explanation on how to use the searcher:

Important note: As of 9.96.5 the Open Hollows box was removed. This means there MUST be no other unoccupied Grottoes listed before the one you want to RNG.
Open Hollows - This is the number of Grottoes that are unoccupied. For this example enter 3.
Grotto Number - This is the checklist of which Grotto you want to search. However, in this case there are only 3 of them that are not filled. All of the other ones are filled so they are skipped. So while Flocessy Ranch is listed as the first Grotto it would not be Grotto Number 0 in this example because it's already filled. Filled Grottoes are skipped during the generation routine. In order of the encounter slot sheet they are: Route 22, Abundant [field], and Route 2. So their corresponding Grotto Number would be 0, 1, and 2 respectively. So in this case check the box for 1.
Slot - The 11 slots that are listed vertically. Vulpix is 0 so check it.
SubSlot - The 4 horizontal slots. Vulpix is in all of them so check all of the boxes 0 to 3.
Gender - Obvious, choose F. If you don't care you can leave it blank and it will display both M and F seeds. Leave blank for genderless Pokémon.
Gender Ratio - The percentage listed on the encounter table. NOT the actual ratio. Make sure you select the right one for it to filter through the proper gender in the search results. Leave blank for genderless Pokémon. For Vulpix it's 10% so choose 10.

With that all filled out let's run the search:

guess NixHex knows what he's talking about, so I'll just HTML/upload this later.

Edit: after a talk on IRC looks like this might be undergoing some changes, hold off on HTMLing

Due to the changes in RNG Reporter 9.96.5 beta I had to change the guide to match Reporter. In case the Open Hollows box gets added back the old guide post-GP checks can be found here (pictures removed though I can take new ones again if necessary).
