First Post! Tornadus Rain

Hello! Although it's pretty obvious, I'm a first time poster here on Smogon. I've been battling on simulators for a while now, but never really got too deep into it. Well, now that finals are almost over I figured now would be as good a time as any. So, without further adieu, here's my first take on a rain team:

[size=+2]Team Building Process[/size]
[pimg]186[/pimg][pimg]671[/pimg]
I started out with a very interesting Tornadus set I'll get to later in the post. I knew if I wanted to make full potential of Tornadus, I needed rain to abuse max accuracy Hurricanes. So, in went Politoed
[pimg]186[/pimg][pimg]671[/pimg][pimg]212[/pimg]
Next, I needed a physical sweeper that could pair with Tornadus. Bulky SD Scizor has been my favorite OU set for a long time, and is even more effective in rain.
[pimg]186[/pimg][pimg]671[/pimg][pimg]212[/pimg][pimg]677[/pimg]
I needed a pokemon that could take rock type attacks aimed at Tornadus, as well as a pokemon that could pack some more power than what I had now. So, specs Keldeo seemed like a perfect choice.
[pimg]186[/pimg][pimg]671[/pimg][pimg]212[/pimg][pimg]677[/pimg][pimg]628[/pimg]
Ferrothorn was put in next to shore up my physical defense, and is a beast under rain. Also my entry hazard setter.
[pimg]186[/pimg][pimg]671[/pimg][pimg]212[/pimg][pimg]677[/pimg][pimg]628[/pimg][pimg]450[/pimg]
I knew I needed a revenge killer for my last slot, and when looking at my attack types, I noticed dragons can give me some trouble. Garchomp fills both roles nicely, and his Earthquake is a great check against steel types that think they can switch in.

Realistic_Politoed_by_darksilvania.jpg

Politoed @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Def*, 4 Spe
Bold* Nature
-Scald
-Ice Beam
-Protect
-Toxic

Originally, Politoed was specially defensive, but the change to physically defensive has been great. He is able to Scald Tyranitar with much more effectiveness now, hopefully burning it and hindering its usefullness. The moveset was kept the same to deal with dragons with Ice Beam, as well as bulky water types with Toxic + Protect.

*Tornadus-T @ Life Orb
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 SpA, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Timid Nature
-Hurricane
-Focus Blast
-U-Turn
-*Hidden Power Ice

I decided to switch Torandus to his Therian counterpart with the suggestion of CyberOdin, and I've gotten much better results. A Life Orb boosted Hurricane is not significantly different from Tornadus's Petaya Hurricane, and Tornadus-T checks a larger part of the metagame and is able to keep momentum on my side thanks to U-Turn. Heat Wave wasn't really effective, as it did less damage to most things than Hurricane already does, so I changed it to HP Ice to counter dragons and the other genies more effectively.

Scizor @ *Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 2548 HP, 252 Atk, 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
-Bullet Punch
-Superpower
-Bug Bite
-Pursuit

Bulky Scizor just doesn't cut it in today's hyper-offense metagame, so I switched his set to CB Scizor, and it's been a great change. He packs enough power to break down a huge portion of the metagame, especially ice types that give this team some trouble. Bug Bite is for annoying grass types that think they can wall me, and Pursuit has been amazing to trap things like Gengar and Latios, who have been pretty popular to run into.

celebi.jpg

*Celebi @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP, 232 SpD, 24 Spe
Calm Nature
-Giga Drain
-Toxic
-Recover
-Stealth Rock

Specially defensive Celebi is an absolute beast in Rain, primarily checking Breloom as well as Jellicent and other annoying pokemon to this team. Toxic allows me to, combined with Politoed, break down a lot of walls that would normally be able to wall this team. Giga Drain + Recover can be a deadly combo, forcing her counters to deal a pretty hefty amount of damage to actually KO her. Stealth Rock is there simply because nothing else on the team is going to run it.

*Landorus @ Life Orb
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Modest Nature
-Earth Power
- Stone Edge
- Hidden Power Ice
- Rock Polish

Sheer Force Landorus is a scary threat to face. He is primarily on this team to ensure sun teams don't run through me, but he is deadly on his own after a Rock Polish. Earth Power just does some insane damage, and Stone Edge and HP Ice provide excellent coverage.

tumblr_lsyezlLNKb1qi2sego1_400.png

Keldeo @ Choice *Scarf
Trait: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Timid Nature
-Hydro Pump
-Secret Sword
-Hidden Power Ice
-Surf

Probably the slot I'm least sure about, Keldeo still packs quite a punch. Hydro Pump is insane in the rain, and as long as the opposing team doesn't have a water absorber, is going to hit for a ton. Secret Sword is perfect on Blissey and any other special wall predicting a Hydro Pump, and HP Ice is for flying and dragon types that resist his other moves. Surf is there just in case I need a guaranteed hit. I changed Specs for Scarf after removing Garchomp, and he has become an effective revenge killer.

So, there it is, my first RMT. I'm not sure if I got all the formatting right since this is my first post, but I've seen a lot of other RMTs so hopefully I didn't mess it up too bad. Let the comments begin!

Also, I'm not sure how to resize pictures yet, so bear with the gigantic pokemon for now.
*Changes will contain an asterisk

Therian Tornadus think is more effective than normal beats as much within the target Pokemon in ou, politoad I suggest that you put perish song instead of ice beam since a Baton Pass team well and you would apply these if are very annoying, and if teams are hardly muallas but you never know you may enter Tentacruel by Keldeo that leverages the rain very well, then everything else look good, for you to Garchomp Dragon dancers that surpasses dragonite with DD giving you one chance to give a outrager KO and possible, Good luck with the test suggested.

for tornadus. for petaya berry to activate, the user needs to have lesser than 25% hp. with your current investmet, your hp will be exactly 300 if i am not wrong. you have to either give it 4 more hp evs, or take them away. also, running tailwind over agility may be pretty beneficial to your team, like scizor and keldeo.

perish song over icebeam on toed as Cyber suggested.

Thanks for the rates!

I meant to put Tornadus's extra EVs in defense, thanks for the heads up. I also forgot Tailwind increases Tornadus's speed as well, so that's going to replace Agility.

I'll test Perish Song over Ice Beam like you both said.

Any other thoughts?

You don't have anything to switch into Torandus-T's hurricane. Ferrothorn can only switch into specs hurricane one time. I am not sure how to fix this but I think its a pretty serious issue in the rain mirror.

Hey!

I think your team is solid already, but it's not going to be great. My sense is you end up getting walled a lot. Specs Keldeo gets shut down by Jellicent. Garchomp isn't powerful enough to kill anything that doesn't take Super Effective damage. Scizor is hard to get going. Stuff like that. Oftentimes, when my teams end up like that, I just go back to the drawing board. It's a tough hole to get out of. Hopefully I can help you a little though.

First, I definitely recommend using Defensive Politoed. What Special moves are you planning to take? Tornadus-t, Lati's, Rotom-w, and others are still going to murder you. Physical Defense really helps vs. Pokemon like Hippowdon and Tyranitar, which rain must beat to win the game.

Next, try SD Toxicroak instead of Scizor. I'm always skeptical of any non-Choice Band Scizor set as it is, but with so many powerful, bulky Pokemon, Scizor isn't going to set up or sweep. You'll either get burned by Scald, outsped and killed by a boosted Water move, burned by Jellicent, Whirlwinded by Skarmory, Hydro Pumped by Rotom-w, etc. Without and SD, Scizor is pretty bad too. Toxicroak doesn't solve all those problems, but it deals with most of them. It's also just far better against a much bigger portion of the metagame. Very underrated sweeper, and not many people prepare for it. It's starting to get more popular, but it's still on the rise.

Next, I think you really just need to get rid of Garchomp. It doesn't belong on your team I'm sorry to say. Just use Scarf instead of Specs on Keldeo. Boosted Surfs in the Rain are strong enough from Keldeo without Specs as it is. Instead of Garchomp, use Specially Defensive Rotom-w. It will give you a good answer to Tornadus-t which is always a big threat, and you cannot switch into that right now. Also Rotom-w will give you a decent switch in to Jellicent. With Scarf Keldeo and SD Toxicroak, you're begging for Jellicent to come in. Obviously, as an Electric type, Rotom-w will put the pressure on.

Good luck!

Hi man! I like your team very much! I only have some suggestion that could make it better!
First i think that you should change your Tornadus-T set into a mixed set, that can help you more: i think that the normal set with taunt and superpower can help you more with tyranitar or the special sponge, like blissey and chansey. Taunt can help you protecting your team from hazards or some setter.
Second, for the same reasons, i think that power whip or gyro ball is necessary on ferrothorn just to prevent you to be completely blocked by taunt user (such as jellicent, that is a big threat for this team). I think that power whip is perfect over protect.
Third, i suggest you to change keldeo's set into scarf set, just to free your slot of revengkiller and try to put in something better than scarf chomp. I suggest you to put on him icy wind and ho electric over hp ice and surf, just because the subdd set of gyarados can be problemtaic for your team (ferrothorn can't do anything if gyara sets the sub, and politoed is the same).
Last i should change garchomp into orb latias, that can help you in defeating jellicent and having a nice resistor to electric!

So the suggested changes are:

Tornadus-T set into the mixed one
Tornadus-T (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Hurricane
- U-turn
- Superpower
- Taunt

Put power whip over protect on ferrothorn

Change keldeo's set into the scarf one
Keldeo @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Justified
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Secret Sword
- Hidden Power [Electric]
- Icy Wind

Change garchomp into orblatias
Latias (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Thunder
- Recover
- Surf

Hope it helped! Nice team!

Your team has a weakness to tornadus-t. It can 2ko your whole team without any problem, it can also win the speed tie against your tornadus-t and outspeed your keldeo. As other rathers already said, jellicent is also quite difficult to kill: it can come in on scizor without any problem and burn it, the same is for ferrothorn since you also lack of any attacking move, it can taunt your politoed preventing the toxic and completely wall your keldeo. Breloom also seems to be quite dangerous, while its true that tornadus can check it, you need to be careful because with stealth rock up and some previous damage you are going to be sweeped by a+2 mach punch; in fact breloom can come in on something slower, spore it, do sword dance and then attempt a sweep. To an extent, others common fighting types give you problem, you dont have anything to switch carefully on both Keldeo and Terrakion, which, with some previous damage attempt a sweep. Also rock polish landorus and rock polish Thundurus has an easy time setting up and then sweep you.

I think that you should really change ferrothorn for a specially defensive Celebi. Celebi can stop efficently Breloom, Keldeo, Landorus and Thundurus, and its also a nice counter to jellicent. A set of Recover/Giga Drain/Psichic/Stealth rock should work here. Psichic is mainly for Breloom, otherwhise you have nothing to kill it. You can also try Thunder wave or u-turn, thunder wave is a nice move to avoid being setup fodder and u-turn gives you some momentum. With ferrothorn removed, you are now more weak to Outrage, so i think that your Scizor should really be changed to a scizor cb set. With the increase of power that it has, it can revenge kill better Dragons, Landorus, Tornadus-t and Terrakion. With pursuit i can also trapkill latios, which can be a problem without ferrothorn, but special defense celebi can recover on the draco meteor anyway.

At this point i think that you should really change the set of your Keldeo to a scarfed one, this helps you a lot against tornadus-t, since its an another pokemon that tornadus-t cant hurricane, and its also a generally better scarfed thanks to his better speed and the strong stab boosted under rain. Garchomp needs lock into outrage to do serious damage, and if it go for earthquake then the are a lot of things that can use him a set up fodder.

Scarf Garchomp here seems to be quite useless, i think that you should put something that really helps you winning the weather war against sunny team, which seems to be problematic. For this reason i think that a lategame sweeper like Sheer force Landorus is perfect. Landorus give a lot of problem against any type of sun teams, it can force Ninetales to switch to setup a rock polish and then attempt a sweep. With the modest nature it can also kill the common venusaur after stealth rock, as well as the other fire types commonly seen under sun.

If you still think that sun team are a problem, then i suggest you to run Rain dance Tornadus-t. Rain dance is a really helpfull move to get the rain back and gain momentum against sun. its also a nice move when you are in a pinch and you lost your weather. Speaking about your tornadus.t, you should also consider running Superpower over focus blast. Superpower does not miss, it does a way more damage to Tyranitar and Blissey, and well did i say it does not miss? If you do so remember to put Naive nature on it.

Choice scarf > Choice specs on Keldeo

Awesome team you have here. I enjoy seeing weather teams abuse more Tornadus-T. :)

First off, may I suggest SubDance Garchomp over your current Scarfed set? It seems like it's FireFang is a bit underminded due to rain being set. and it can help when anticipating a switch from an overpredicted Outrage or EQ.
445.gif

Garchomp@Leftovers
Trait: RoughSkin
Jolly nature
EQ, DragonClaw/DualChop/Outrage, Substitute & SwordsDance

Should you decide to go w/ my suggestion of SubSD Chomp, you should go for ChoiceScarf>ChoiceSpecs on your current Keldeo set. This gives you an excellent revenge killed for all 108 Speed and slowwer Pokemon.

I hope this helps, and good luck with the team. :)

Wow, thanks for all the rates!

I have a LOT of testing to do with all these ideas, I'll keep coming back to update this thread with what I find. Again, thank you for all the great ideas!

So, I tested pretty much all the ideas I was given for this team, and the changes are listed above. Thanks to everyone who rated this team, and hopefully this team can get even better with future rates!

Hey, i see you have bug bite on scizor, i dont know if its a mistake or what, but make sure to put U-turn instead. Bug bite is not even that stronger than U-turn, but u-turn helps scouting and gaining momentum for the team, its like the main reason to use Choice band Scizor :3

Also, dont run Stone edge on landorus. You have modest Nature and a full investiment in special attack, so Focus blast is better here. Focus blast can ko Skarmory for example, air baloon Heatran, Hydreygon, Rotom-w or whatever else, its just more powerfull than Stone edge and it does not have the recoil from Life orb.
