Rain Offensive Trick Room Team

Hello Smogon, I'm new to the competitive world, and actually this is the first Trick Room team that I made. Since I'm almost done with the guides, I'd like to see my team judged by some good players, so huh, let's get started!

547.gif

Whimsicott (F) @Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Trick Room
- U-turn
- Encore
- Taunt
Whimsicott is the lead of the battle, It's (almost) perfect to set up the TR in peace. Encore blocks the setuppers while Taunt blocks the Pokémon who try to set hazards. U-turn is just to deal some damage and switch fast. The focus sash is here just to help it survive from powerful STAB moves (especially from Scizor). Whimsicott's principal role is to set the first Trick Room, which is most of the time difficult because of its priority.

Politoed (M) @ Choice Specs Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]
Politoed is the second Pokémon that I'll send out to the battle. Not as slow as Ferrothorn, but Politoed can be (a bit) dangerous inside the Trick Room. Hydro Pump boosted from rain and specs almost 1HKO every Pokémon, and is a 2HKO for the grass Pokémon like Venusaur and such.. Ice beam is for dragons, Focus blast is for steel and ice Pokémon.

579.gif

Reuniclus (M) @ Life Orb Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 192 HP / 64 Def / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Trick Room
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
Ferrothorn was doing fine in the team, its speed and its resistance made it a good attacker, but two TR setuppers weren't good enough. That bulky embryo probably takes a good use of the Trick Room, since it takes non-stab attacks like nothing, plus its ability didn't hurt it much, which made it reliable against sun and sand teams. The set is the base one, counters a lot of Pokémon and makes a lot of trouble before going K.O.

437.gif

Bronzong @ Lum Berry Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Atk / 140 SDef Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake
- Zen Headbutt
- Trick Room
The second Pokémon who sets the Trick Room. Bronzong is the kind of Pokémon who can be used as any role, but inside the TR, it takes the role as wall and attacker at the same time. Of course, Trick Room helps the other teamates to attack first (mainly Clamperl and Conkeldurr). Since its only weakness is the fire tipe, inside the Trick and the Rain is technically unstoppable. Gyro ball takes down all the Pokémon who resist from Zen Headbutt and Earthquake (example: Latias) and ice Pokémon (Mamoswine in primis). Zen Headbutt leaves a trace on those fighting and poison Pokémon, while Earthquake damages its number one nemesis (like Ferrothorn): Magnezone. After that, the Lum Berry is here to prevent Bronzong from getting asleep or burned, which helps a lot for setting up the Trick Room

366.gif

Clamperl (F) @ DeepSeaTooth
Trait: Shell Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Grass]
Thanks to its wonderful special attack, Clamperl is the most reliable special sweeper of my team, thanks to its held item, it has enough Special Attack to reach Deoxys-A's. Surf is a powerful STAB move who hits a lot of Pokémon hard, especially under the rain, Ice beam hits dragons, flying and grass Pokémon, HP Grass hits Jellicent, Gastrodon and Rotom-W pretty hard. Clamperl's movepool isn't good as many sweepers, so that's why it has only 3 moves

149.gif

Dragonite (F) @ Choice Band Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Outrage
- ExtremeSpeed
- Fire Punch
- Earthquake

The team relied a lot on the Trick room, and actually, if I was going to lose both the TR setuppers, It was an instant loss. Dragonite was a great add, since it worked fine without the Trick room and as a late game sweeper. Plus it helped a lot against Ferrothorn and Scizor, which the last one gave me a lot of troubles because of the lack of fire moves in the team. Outrage is to keep Dragons and such away (principally Kingdra, which will rely a lot on the speed boost if there isn't the Trick Room activated), fire punch is for Scizor, Ferrothorn and Forretress, Extremespeed is for a late game sweep, if the foe hasn't got ghost, rock or steel Pokémon. Eq is for fire, electric, steel and rock types.

Just... Huh, I think It needs some improvements, tips and suggestions are welcome! Happy new year and thanks in advance!

Previous Pokémon:
598.gif

Ferrothorn (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Aerial Ace
- Bulldoze
- Power Whip
- Iron Head
Even though Ferrothorn was good enough to attack inside the Trick Room, I needed a 3rd TR setupper, so it has been replaced by Reuniclus.

534.gif

Conkeldurr (F) @ Flame Orb
Trait: Guts
EVs: 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 SDef
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Ice Punch
- Earthquake
- Hammer Arm
- Stone Edge
Even though it has a pretty scaring attack stat, like Ferrothorn, both rely a lot on the Trick Room, and without it there is no need if not just lose a turn. It has been replaced by Dragonite, which can act without the Trick room as well.

You could have Ferro run gyro ball too, just remember to give all users of gyro ball 0 IVs in speed.

Toed has HP grass already. You might want to give either Clamp or the Toed HP electric instead. Clampearl can learn shell smash to augment its offensive power but that would make its weakness to priority even worse. Otherwise, you can give it substitute to absorb attacks or toxic to get in extra damage.

Oh my, I'd hate to face this team.

That said, you need a Pokémon that can work just as well in Trick Room as well as out of it. One such Pokémon is Dragonite, specifically a set looking along the lines of this:

Dragonite @ Leftovers
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 HP/252 Atk/4 Spd (Just in case)
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
-Dragon Claw
-Roost
-Fire Punch/Earthquake
-Extremespeed

Dragonite could easily replace your Conkeldurr. While Conkeldurr is quite the threat, it doesn't pose enough of a threat in my opinion to Ghost-types or Psychic-types, whom your team may struggle with a little bit.

Hey Yayoi I like your idea of Rain Trick Room but I see some problems with this team,

  • First, Whimscott doesn't pose any offensive presence on your team and is just to frail of a Trick Room setter to function and doesn't have any entry hazards. In fact no one on your team has any entry hazards. To ensure Conkeldurr can get some crucial OHKO you need entry hazards. To help ensure this I recommend you making Bronzong your lead. I recommend changing set around. This is what I recommend

Bronzong @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Atk / 64 SpD

Sassy Nature
Trick Room
Stealth Rock
Gyro Ball
Explosion

I always recommend Explosion on your Bronzong. This is a good way to bring in Conkeldurr in safely while also softening up the opponent for the TR sweeper. This does not mean that Bronzong has to explode on its very first TR set-up, but Bronzong can certainly go out with a boom late-game for your more threatening TR sweepers to clean up. This means you have to forego Earthquake.

  • Second, only 2 Trick Roomers for your full Trick Room team will not work in long battles. Plus only one of Trick Roomers can last in long battles. Whimscott is just to frail and doesn't have any offensive presence on your team. While Whimscott might seem good for lead on paper, Whimscott can't take hardly any repeated moves. You want your Trick Room setters to come back in repeatedly; in a full Trick Room team you need at least 3 bulky Trick Roomers to be able to take hits and continue to set back up Trick Room. To help you with this problem I recommend you dropping Whimscott for Jellicent. Seeing how your team is a rain team, opposing Keldeo can come in and sweep through your team. No one on your team can stop Keldeo so Jellicent functions well as a good counter to Keldeo and a good Trick Room user.Jellicent can also stop physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp. What sets Jellcient apart from many Trick Room users is that he can use Recovery to gain HP back. I recommend this set
Jellicent @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs : 248 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Trick Room
Recovery
Scald
Will-O-Wisp

  • Next, I recommend switching out Ferrthorn for Reuniclus. While Ferrothorn might be a good surprise sweeper, the Life Orb recoil will add up and leave him vulnerable to priority moves. Also the moveset on your Ferrothron isn't hitting a lot of types effectively besides Magnezone and Jellicent this is why I suggest the Offensive Trick Room Reuniclus. With Reuniclus you have a threatening sweeper who can sweep through your opponents team. With OTR you are hitting a lot more Pokemon without the nasty recoil from Life Orb. This set is what I recommend

Reuniclus @ Life Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs; 160 HP / 64 Def / 252 SpA
Trick Room
Psychic
Shadow Ball
Focus Blast

  • Last but not least Clamperl is too damn frail of sweeper. While it might be powerful with a Deepseatooth, it has a hard time finding a way to come out on the field. It has paper thin defenses and can easily be revenged killed by priority moves from Scizor and Breloom with ease. To help with that I suggest a Mixed Rain Dragonite. It should be noted that in the rain Dragonite's Hurricane becomes 100% accuracy and a chance to confuse a Pokemon. This is Dragonite's best STAB next to Draco Meteor. Since rain makes Thunder perfect accuracy this is good for breaking through the special wall of Jellicent who can stop Dragonite. This set is what I recommend

Dragontie @ Life Orb
Trait: Multscale
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
Hurricane
Thunder
Aqua Tail
Extremespeed

I know this might seem a lot but I believe these changes I stated will greatly help your team. Hoped I helped and good luck.

Hi Yayoi Takaysuki

First off, Welcome to Smogon! This is both an interesting and solid Trick Room team you have here and can really throw off your opponents. Being a Trick Room team, you want Trick Room to active for as much as possible so that your Pokemon "outspeed" your opponent's. Currently, you only have 2 Trick Room users however and this will not be able to completely support your team's needs. To add an additional Trick Room user, I suggest replacing Ferrothorn with an Offensive Trick Room Reuniclus with a moveset of Trick Room / Psyshock / Focus Blast / Shadow Ball. Reuniclus is one of the best Trick Room users in the game with his slow Speed stat and massive Special Attack stat. With his great bulk, he's able to take a hit, set up Trick Room, and proceed to dish out massive damage. Life Orb is the item on this set which boosts Reuniclus' damage output and he does not have to worry about recoil damage due to his Magic Guard ability. Psyshock is used instead of Psychic in order to beat Blissey as well as some Calm Mind users such as Keldeo. Focus Blast and Shadow Ball provide great coverage with each other. Replacing Ferrothorn with Reuniclus also helps against your slight weakness to Breloom as Reuniclus can outspeed Breloom under TR.

Another crucial component of Trick Room teams is to have a Pokemon that can function well both under the effects of TR and outside of its effects. That way if your out of TR, your team still can fend for itself. To fulfill this, I recommend replacing Conkeldurr with a Choice Band Dragonite with a moveset of Outrage / Extremespeed / Fire Punch / Earthquake. Dragonite hits extremely hard especially when equipped with a Choice Band. His middling Speed allows him to "outspeed" many fast offensive threats when TR is up but still allows him to outspeed the majority of walls and bulkier Pokemon when TR is not up. Extremespeed is very useful to pick off faster threats and has similar damage output to Scizor's Choice Banded Bullet Punch. Outrage is Dragonite's standard STAB, Fire Punch hits Ferrothorn and Scizor, and Earthquake destroys Heatran and Jirachi.

A final change I suggest is switching Focus Sash on Whimsicott to Leftovers. Whimsicott is bulky enough to take a few hits and having Leftovers provides some healing so Whimsicott can potentially switch back in set up Trick Room a few times throughout a match.

Hope I helped and good luck with your team!

Sets:
Reuniclus (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 192 HP / 64 Def / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
-Trick Room
-Psyshock
-Focus Blast
-Shadow Ball

Dragonite (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
-Outrage
-Extremespeed
-Fire Punch
-Earthquake

tl;dr
Ferrothorn ----> Offensive Trick Room Reuniclus
Conkeldurr ----> Choice Band Dragonite
Focus Sash on Whimsicott ----> Leftovers

Hey Yayoi I like your idea of Rain Trick Room but I see some problems with this team,
[...]
Hello Sciztar, and thanks for the tips, but I tried them and...

  • Bronzong without earthquake is too exposed to Magnezone, which may set up spamming Charge beam
  • Whimsicott's role is to trap setuppers and Pokémon who try to set hazards, I would have replaced it with Sableye, but it can't learn Trick Room, that's why I can't carry Jellicent, since it doesn't cover Whimsicot's role.
  • Clamperl is vital to carry down some Pokémon without problems, since it suffers only from extremespeed and nothing else under the rain
  • Reuniclus works fine in this team, so it replaced Ferrothorn.
    Hi Yayoi Takaysuki [...]
tl;dr
Ferrothorn ----> Offensive Trick Room Reuniclus
Conkeldurr ----> Choice Band Dragonite
Focus Sash on Whimsicott ----> Leftovers
Fixed, thanks! The team needed a late-game sweeper or someone who could work fine even without the Trick Room.

This looks like a pretty good trick room team to me. While I've never used one I think whimiscott is the weakest link on this team. However I think Deoxys-D could possibly fill this role quite well. It can set up trick room, which helps since it's not the slowest pokemon, but that means it can work somewhat well outside of trick room. It can taunt to stop pokemon from setting up on you, and then they'll probably switch. You can either use rain dance or recover on it to either get rain into play if politoed loses a weather war or recover to keep deoxys-D in play longer. Psycho Boost gives it a good STAB attack which could cripple special sweppers going against you. I'd at least try a couple battles with it and see how it works.

Deoxys-D @ Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Trick Room
- Taunt
- Rain Dance
- Psycho Boost

I made another small (but it improved my team a lot) change:
369.gif

Relicanth (F) @ Life Orb Trait: Rock Head
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Head Smash
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Zen Headbutt
Clamperl has got some good special attack thanks to its held item, but its resistance wasn't worth its attack, especially if the foe had priority moves so here comes "That rocky fish" named Relicanth. good HP, good defense and discrete attack, especially because of its good movepool. This moveset takes the best potential of Relicanth, which might work without the Trick room as well.
Thoughts?
