Factory Tournament Round 1! Dogfish44 vs Imanalt

Stratos

Banned deucer.
Hello everybody, and welcome to ASB's official Battle Factory Tournament! A rentals tourney has been long in anticipation, so let us all thank EspyOwner for making it happen! Let's look at the rules:

Code:
Items: ON
Abilities: ONE
Arena: ASB Tournament Arena
Unlimited Chills/Recoveries
Two substitutions
Two day DQ on actions, three day DQ on ref.
Switch=OK
I join you here at the ASB Arena for one of the more interesting of the first round's matches, between the Electric Type gym leader Dogfish44 and the Ground Type aficionado Imanalt! Dogfish44 has been blessed by this format, as Imanalt doesn't get to abuse any type advantage; instead, both players will be battling with RENTED POKEMON!

Coming to the foreground, from across the pond, we have Dogfish44! He has a colorful without the U variety of mons, unlike his usual assortment. Will variety be enough to win him the tournament? I guarantee if it's not, you'll hear him blaming anything but himself!

And on back court we have Imanalt. It seems like, unlike Dogfish, he has decided to stick with what is familiar, bringing with him two fairly powerful ground types. Will his familiarity with his Pokemon be enough to bring him a win against an opponent that recently one-upped him in a gym match? We'll find out soon!

Interestingly, both battlers have brought two Gen I Pokemon. You know what they say about Gen I movepools! They're like orcinus's ego: massive. How will each player order against so much bide?

And now, to see who starts the tournament, the all-important Coin Flip! Heads means that dogfish will send out first, and Imanalt will order first, while tails will cause the reverse. Annnnnnnnd

ew this coin was minted in denver, denver sucks

DF will send out first! Good luck to both contestants!

And it looks like the contestants are eager to be the first round reffed, getting their orders in within a matter of hours! Will the short time for deliberation show in their quality?

It looks like Imanalt is employing evasive tactics to try and get the leg up on the numerically superior battler, sending his Nidoking underground with a Dig! Dogfish's Machamp just waits patiently, however. He must be storing a Counter, which with its minus priority will hit after Nidoking resurfaces. Tricky! And up pops the Nidoking, smacking Machamp for a pittance. Looks like I was right: Machamp just smacked the Nidoking back much harder!

The purple beast decides, correctly, that a change of tactic is in order and begins violently shaking the ground, knocking the Machamp off its balance. Like the fatass it is, it hurts itself as it trips in the midst of this Earthquake! That did a fair amount of damage. But unfazed the Pokemon with many arm hands runs up to Nidoking and smacks it with a freezing cold, super effective Ice Punch! Imanalt prays to the hax gods and furiously sacrifices goats, and by the skin of his teeth Nidoking is spared from frostbite as Machamp retreats. Still, it left a mark.

And the third action shows itself to be a repeat of the first, as Nidoking uses Dig and Machamp counters it.

Round end, and dogfish has accrued a small lead! Looks like Imanalt tried to make this into a damage race, and paid the price... Still, Dogfish has to order first, and Nidoking has a not-insubstantial support movepool. Honestly, he didn't do that much more damage this round, perhaps because his STAB was usele—oh fuck, what's this? Machamp looks like it's howling in pain—its Burn Orb must have just activated! Well, with Guts now going, this next round looks a lot less favorable for Imanalt! I'm thinking Dogfish avoided using Earthquake this round because of Torment. You'd better look out. It looks like the two players are speeding toward being the first game done, too!

And Round 2 of this ever-intense tournament battle begins with Dogfish recalling his Machamp, and sending out Starmie! Starmie is a real menace to Imanalt's whole team; he better watch out for that one. However, Nidoking seems rather unconcerned, as he simply takes the intermission to unwrap and chew on his delightful-looking candy bar. But wait, that's no ordinary candy bar!

Nidoking looks up, his eyes blood red. He's been filled with insatiable RAGE.

Starmie, clearly terrified by this development, attempts to end the Nidoking as fast as possible, soaking him in vile, putrid salt water. The salt seeping into his wounds only serves to anger the beast further. He electrifies the Starmie with a Thunderbolt of the heavens. But he's not done yet.

RAGE. RAGE. RAAAAAAAAAAGE.

In a move the Starmie could have never expected, Nidoking doesn't let up on the offensive. He forces his own body to exhaustion, and follows up his thunderbolt with a devastating full-on Head Smash! Holy shit, the psychic star is reeling now! She just barely manages to get it together and fire off a Hydro Pump, which, with the help of her illuminate and speedy nature, hits and finishes off the Nidoking. He collapses in a fit of rage.

Game is now 3-2 Dogfish, but the damage totals are about even, and Dogfish's most threatening members have both been bruised by combat. Nidoking clearly carried his weight today, but will it be enough?

The Nidoking falls, and with it falls insatiable rage. The Starmie and its trainer appear relieved; the Nidoking's trainer is horrified. The Nidoking isn't displaying much emotion at all.

Imanalt sends in his Torterra as a replacement. He appears terrified of the Blizzards the Starmie can unleash, and for good reason: each does upwards of 30 damage. So Imanalt adopts the sophisticated strategy of KILL IT WITH FIRE—and the wooded beast lumbers in with a powerful Wood Hammer, a sure OHKO, but what's this? It seems like Starmie threw up a protective barrier just in time, turning an OHKO into a 0HKO. Still, you can't wall forever.

Next, the Starmie takes some time to pause and recuperate its hit points. The Torterra lunges at it again with similar power, but the sea star holds, thanks to its Recover. And then, with a sad gleam in its gem, as if it knows what is about to come, the Starmie shares its pain with the Torterra, sapping some of the turtle's life force to replenish its own. The Torterra howls in pain and rushes the Starmie with extreme gusto, smacking it for a whopping 70 damage with a Wood Hammer combo and sending it flying! Starmie is definitely knocked out., but not without a price. Torterra is gasping for breath now, extremely low on energy, and must cool down next turn.

Some very clever play by dogfsih this round! Torterra may have dealt more damage and widened the HP gap, but it's sitting at a perilously low 4 EN and cannot switch out! Could this be the end of Imanalt's master ball dreams?

We have a short round here! Dogfish44 sends in his Bannette, who grins evilly. Maybe it has a plan... no, wait, it just grins evilly all the time.

And the festivities commence! Bannette calls Torterra's mother some rather nasty names, but he can do nothing but fume and plot his revenge as he gasps for breath.

Then, in a blink, it's all over. The beast *shades* LUMBERS over to the ghostly doll and smacks it once, heavily yet sharply, with an outstretched limb, and then falls from exhaustion. The Bannette takes the opportunity to set up a warped field that reverses speed order before Imanalt can send in his Dewgong! Imanalt has promised that if Dewgong wins him the match, he will buy himself 10 Seel. Will it ever happen? We'll see in the exciting conclusion!

Arena Notes: Trick Room (3r)

The new round begins! Imanalt sends out his last reserve, Dewgong, in the hopes of holding off Dogfish44's relentless assault. Will it do?

It certainly looks like Dogfish44 is playing it safe again. His Banette, faster thanks to Trick Room, starts with a ball of ghostly flame that alights on the Dewgong, leaving it burned and more than negating the effect of muscle band! Welp. Dewgong responds in kind, whipping up a vicious Hailstorm that will hit the Banette for passive damage every action, yet leave himself unharmed.

And the passive play continues from Dogfish, whose Banette spits up a glob of unseemly toxins onto the poor whale! Those will be getting worse every round, and there's not much Imanalt can do about it, since he can't switch. Dewgong quits with the pleasantries and draws blood, temporarily intensifying the hail into a deadly Blizzard, which hits the doll for solid damage!

Now Banette grins evilly, seemingly unmoving. But it looks a little more rejuvenated, and Dewgong much more drained. That must have been another Pain Split! Howling with fury, the Dewgong retaliates by sending another Blizzard—this is too much for the Banette to bear, who is chilled to the bone and Freezes!

Round 5 is ended, and Dogfish looks almost insurmountably ahead now. Interestingly, every move he has used for the past three rounds is blockable by Taunt! Will he go on the offensive and put the poor seal out of misery, or will he ride his early advantage to a sure victory on the back of stall?
