Take a girl with a crazy name, and a ragtag bunch of companions, and send them on a quest through mythical lands to get her sister back, encountering many mysteries and wonders along the way.
"Sounds like a fairy tale," you may think. You're correct but don't grit your teeth and wait for "happily ever after," as you'll be disappointed.
This book is vastly different from fairy tales, in that the main characters, thought they fit their fairy tale roles, are different from the static ones contained in most fairy tale-like stories.
In this skewed fairy tale land, everyone has a fight to pick with someone else, morbid views and discontent are allowed, and the loose ends of everything are brought into question, allowing for a realistic and interesting story. (There are even some politics in it!)
If only it were written at an adult level, this book would be perfect. Sadly, it's at an early teen level.
As it stands, though, I'd say this is a good mid-length book that is absolutely worth picking up if you like non-conformity to a specific role, enjoy fairy tales, or just like fantasy books in general.
