Munchlax (UU Analysis)

Munchlax (UU Update):

[Overview]

[SET]
name: RestLax
move 1: Rest
move 2: Sleep Talk
move 3: Return / Curse
move 4: Thunderpunch / Curse
item: Leftovers
ability: Thick Fat
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 202 SpD

Why this set deserves to be on-site:
- Due to having an actual Attack stat, it's not fully outclassed by Chansey.
- Out of the ten Pokemon with the highest Sp. Atk in UU, Munchlax resists / is immune to half of their STAB types thanks to Thick Fat
- Thunderpunch allows Munchlax to hit Ghosts for a bit of damage, which is another advantage over Chansey
- Munchy deserves an analysis ;-;

Additional Comments:
- Substitute can be used in place of one of the attacks, but it's not recommended since Return is a reliable STAB move and Fire Punch provides lots of coverage.
- Ice Punch and Fire Punch can be used for type coverage.
- If entry hazards are up Munchlax can run Whirlwind on a UU stall team.
- Lax can also run a Rest / Recycle set with a Lum berry, but it's easily Tauntable.

Teammates and Counters:
- Entry hazard support is always helpful for Munchlax, especially if Toxic Spikes can be pulled off without being absorbed too quickly
- Spiritomb is a great teammate for Lax, taking all of the fighting attacks aimed at it.
-Another great teammate for Lax is Tangrowth- it absorbs all of the physical hits aimed at Munchlax while Lax takes the Fire / Ice type moves aimed at Tangrowth happily.
- Any physical attackers with a strong STAB move will send Munchlax running.
- Dugtrio happily mauls Munchlax, only taking damage from Ice Punch on the switch.

use pursuit, that way you are not outclassed by chansey as a special wall. with munchlax, you can hit and trap rotom and mismagius. i'd go for rest / return / pursuit / sleep talk.

Just a note; with the current spread it's something like a 4HKO if they catch on and don't switch... meaning they can set up 2/3 NPs and sweeeeep

Running more attack means that even if they switch, it's only a KO with rocks always on Mismagius; rotom is KOed with rocks like 2% of the time lol

Even though the justification for this guy is that "it has an attack stat," I think Body Slam should be mentioned (or even the #1 choice) because paralysis is awesome and a defensive Pokemon is a great choice to spread it around. Unless the power loss from Return stops you from checking something, Body Slam is probably more useful.

Munchlax isn't totally outclassed in UU, but you want to use it wrong way. For first, I would go with Curse set. Before someone says LickyLicky - Munchlax is BULKIER on special side then LickyLicky and has Thick Fat to make it unique enough (however this weaker defense is problem). Probably set like this. BTW Miltank may outclass it (however it still is less special bulky), but for now if one set is good even when outclassed, it should be added to analyses anyway as a new rule.

Munchlax @ Leftovers / Chesto Berry
252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD Careful
- Curse
- Rest / Selfdestruct
- Return / Body Slam
- Fire Punch / Earthquake

After one curse, for example Munchlax takes maximum 62% from Life Orb Cross Chop from Toxicroak which is quite good. I would recommend though good fighting lures, as they may easily stop this Munchlax anyway.

And if you want to use Munchlax as a check to some special attackers, I can't imagine it working with RestTalk - it's just too easy to set-up on. Munchlax may be perfect if you need special sponge for more offensive teams, where CHansey is useless.

Munchlax @ Choice Band
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD Adamant
- Pursuit
- Return / Body Slam
- Earthquake
- Filler

It checks few special attackers, mainly ghosts (for example Thunderbolt Mismagius and Rotom). +2 Leftovers Mismagius with Thunderbolt deals maximum 50.63%, which 2OHKOes 42% of time, while you 2OHKO it without problem with CB Pursuit even if it stays in (dealing 59-70% of his health). If you use +SpD nature, Mismagius can't 2OHKO you with +2 Leftovers Thunderbolt, however you may miss 2OHKO, which is troublesome. Unfortunately Munchlax looses to HP Fighting versions.

I guess that's it. I hope that helps ;). BTW some EVs may need some changes.

Try the offensive snorlax classic of investing in the defense instead of HP - a set of 8 HP / 252 Atk / 248 SpD is a lot bulkier on the special side, and since you're looking to sponge special hits with it it will be a lot more useful:

+2 LO Mismagius Thunderbolt vs 252 HP / 4 SpD Munchlax: 55.9 - 65.8%

+2 LO Mismagius Thunderbolt vs 8 HP / 248 SpD Munchlax: 49.4 - 58.4%

As you can see there is a big difference... but having done this calc, I'm quite disappointed by how much it still takes... I'd still much rather just use Tauros for this kinda Ghost trap thing.

I won't argue with that. However if you face Leftovers SubMissy, Munchlax takes 38.11% -> 44.90% which is pretty damn good. But yeah, investing in special defense is much better idea. Even if you face Life Orb Mismagius, you may dent it pretty hard, switch to something to absorb Thunderbolt and finish her. And most important thing is that you face Life Orb versions... really rare.

| Mismagius | Usage | 23032 | 17.2 |
| Mismagius | Ability | Levitate | 100.0 |
| Mismagius | Item | Leftovers | 70.6 |
| Mismagius | Item | Life Orb | 12.7 |

In other words, there's only 12% chance to meet Mismagius carrying Life Orb.
And on other note:

| Mismagius | Move | Thunderbolt | 56.3 |
| Mismagius | Move | Substitute | 55.2 |
| Mismagius | Move | Nasty Plot | 48.6 |
| Mismagius | Move | HP-Fighting | 32.5 |

32% however isn't this bad, but still it's not that huge number to take it for sure, that Munchlax must meet HP Fighting version. Anyway I wouldn't bother much with facing Life Orb Mismagius, as it's rare. But if you face it, it's better just in case to have another check for it.

While I feel Munchlax may have a shot at UU, the OP of this thread effectively went AWOL a couple of days after making this. Moving. Anyone is free to start a new Munchlax thread for discussion.
