QC APPROVALS: 2/2 [HEYSUP] [DRACOYOSHI8]

GP APPROVALS: 2/2 [FATECRASHERS] [SNORLAXE]

Status: Done!

[OVERVIEW]

On paper, Smoochum looks horrible. Terrible base stats (aside from a good Special Attack and decent Speed) along with two near-useless abilities make her an oft-overlooked Pokemon. However, Smoochum can fight back with an extremely strong Blizzard. If priority users and a few walls are taken down, Smoochum can easily sweep entire teams with Blizzard coming off a maximum of 19 Special Attack.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Blizzard
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Hidden Power Ground
move 4: Ice Beam
item: Choice Scarf
nature: Modest / Timid
ability: Forewarn
evs: 240 SpA / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With Choice Scarf, Smoochum attempts to circumvent her horrible defenses and rip through teams with a STAB Blizzard coming off of 18 or 19 Special Attack as well as 24 or 25 Speed.

Blizzard hits amazingly hard, OHKOing everything from Gligar to Gastly. Only a few Pokemon, such as Bronzor, Munchlax, and Water-types will avoid being 2HKOed by Blizzard. Psychic is a backup STAB move, hitting Water-types that resist Blizzard for massive damage. Hidden Power Ground hits Houndour, who otherwise walls Smoochum. Finally, Ice Beam is used in case Smoochum needs to perform a revenge kill in unfavorable weather.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Trick is an option to cripple Munchlax and Bronzor. However, Smoochum despises losing her Scarf, as without it, Smoochum is easy bait for anything faster. The EVs on this set give Smoochum maximum Special Attack and Speed; it is useless to put EVs anywhere else on Smoochum because it's too frail to take a hit.

[Team Options]

Smoochum is not the kind of Pokemon that can just be slapped on a team. It needs a lot of support in order to work correctly. Snover is obviously required for hail, as otherwise Smoochum will have a very unreliable Blizzard. Smoochum's main moves are utterly walled by Bronzor and Munchlax. Bronzor can be removed or set up on by a Fire-type or Wynaut, while Munchlax can be walled by Duskull and taken out by a Fighting-type such as Mankey or Machop. These Fighting-types also have the bonus of being able to KO Houndour if they do not switch in on Fire Blast.

Smoochum's main bane, however, is priority. Smoochum is at the very least 2HKOed by almost every priority attack in Little Cup, and is even OHKOed by most Sucker Punch, ExtremeSpeed, and Bullet Punch users. The main priority abuser in Little Cup is Croagunk. A good counter is Wynaut, though it has to watch out for Dark Pulse variants. Wyanut will not be able to stand up to users of Fake Out and U-turn, such as Meowth and Aipom. Therefore, a bulky Ghost like Duskull is recommended to deal with these threats. One Pokemon that Smoochum struggles with is Carvanha. Not only does it resist Smoochum's main STAB moves, it also has Aqua Jet and Crunch to deal with Smoochum. There are very few counters to Carvanha. Bronzor is your best bet, only being 3HKOed by Crunch and being able to reduce damage further with Reflect. Keep in mind that Bronzor will need Earthquake to damage Carvanha effectively, however.

[Optional Changes]

Aside from a Choice Scarf set, Smoochum has few options. It can attempt to run a Nasty Plot set with Salac Berry or Speed-passing, but it is easily killed by priority. Smoochum has a plethora of other special attacks, but they have redundant coverage with her main moves. Smoochum can set up Trick Room and sweep effectively under it, but priority hurts it just like any other Smoochum set. Finally, Smoochum learns Fake Out and can attempt to lead with it, but has almost nothing to favor it over other Fake Out leads.

[Counters]

Smoochum, being the fragile Pokemon that it is, has many counters. Munchlax and Bronzor utterly laugh at any attempts from Smoochum to hurt them besides Trick. Houndour walls Smoochum outside of Hidden Power Ground, and can use Sucker Punch to pick Smoochum off; Stunky and Croagunk can do the same. All three of them also learn Pursuit, which will easily KO Smoochum if it decides to run. Weather changers like Hippopotas or Rain Dance Mantyke will make Blizzard unreliable and render Smoochum essentially useless. Finally, priority users (especially Fake Out users) will kill Smoochum quite easily.

Thanks for the catch, I c/ped this from something else and forgot to change the nature and evs.

I've used Scarf Smoochum before to success. And most of Smoochum's other options are very... "bad" on it. Approving.

excellent analysis. the main issue here was inconsistency when referring to smoochum; sometimes smoochum was "it", and other times smoochum was "she". however, you seemed to use "it" the most, so i changed all pronouns to "it". aside from that, awesome job -- this is done.

ok the one case where we have to use "her"....you guys decide to change it to it.

i get it you want to make my job harder i guess
