Giratina-O Dex
[Overview]
  • Unique typing and Levitate offers a number of resistances and immunities.
  • Blocks Rapid Spin, and is the only spinblocker in the game to not lose to Swords Dance Doryuuzu.
  • Moderately high offensive stats and a couple of powerful attacks to take advantage of it.
  • Very impressive bulk with its base 150 HP / 100 Defense / 100 Special Defense
  • Rather slow and is riddled with common weaknesses; lacks recovery
  • It can only hold one item, the Griseous Orb. However, it is also immune to Trick.
[SET]
name: Mixed Attacker
move 1: Draco Meteor
move 2: Shadow Sneak
move 3: Hidden Power Fire
move 4: Dragon Claw
item: Griseous Orb
evs: 252 Atk / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
nature: Naughty

Set Comments

  • Draco Meteor from 338 Special Attack, combined with the boost from Griseous Orb, can dent almost everything that does not resist it.
  • Hidden Power Fire allows Giratina-O to destroy Forretress, Scizor, Nattorei, and Doryuuzu
  • Shadow Sneak turns Giratina-O into a mini revenge killer. It does 51% minimum to 4 HP / 0 Defense Mewtwo.
  • Dragon Claw is a reliable, "spammable" attack that lacks Draco Meteor's Special Attack reduction side effect. It is its strongest option against Blissey and Ho-Oh as well.
Additional Comments

  • Earthquake can be used over Dragon Claw or Hidden Power Fire to hit Heatran and Jirachi for greater damage. However, replacing the former makes Giratina-O vulnerable to Blissey and replacing the latter forfeits its way of dealing with Forretress, Scizor, and Nattorei
  • Outrage can be used over Dragon Claw for much more power but is not recommended due to Giratina-O's low Speed and weaknesses.
  • A spread of 248 Atk / 240 Spe / 20 SpA with Naive nature can be used. It lets Giratina-O outrun maximum Speed, Jolly Doryuuzu when the sandstorm is not raging.
  • Conversely, you may sacrifice some Attack or Special Attack in favor of bulk, and use Brave nature instead of Naughty.
Teammates & Counters

  • Multiple layers of entry hazards are highly recommended when using Giratina-O, due to its ability to block Rapid Spin and to take advantage of them
  • Spikes users such as Deoxys-S, Nattorei, Forretress, Skarmory, and Agirudaa appreciate Giratina-O's ability to spinblock. Forretress can also set up Toxic Spikes
  • Groudon and Dialga are great Stealth Rock setters
  • Steel-type Pokemon are great partners to Giratina-O as they resist most, if not all, of Giratina-O's weaknesses. Steel Arceus, Nattorei, Scizor, Skarmory, Forretress, Metagross and Jirachi are great choices. Dialga is also a great partner, but keep in mind that it lacks the resistance to Dragon-type attacks unlike the others. Giratina-O's resistance Fire- and immunity to Fighting- and Ground-type attacks makes it an excellent partner to them as well.
  • Counters: Heatran resists all 4 moves, but can not take repeated hits, especially with multiple layers of entry hazards down at its side. Heatran also lacks a swift way of taking Giratina-O out. Lugia also walls Giratina-O due to its very high Defenses and Roost. Tyranitar will also pose a threat due to its high Special Defense and access to STAB Crunch. Countering Giratina-O may be somewhat difficult, but it is susceptible to revenge kills from the likes of Choice Scarf Palkia and Dialga.
  • Jirachi can be an issue if Giratina-O lacks Earthquake, but Hidden Power Fire can leave a mark in sunlight so it must be switched in on another move.
[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Dragon Pulse
move 3: Aura Sphere / Shadow Ball / Thunder
move 4: Substitute
item: Griseous Orb
evs: 208 HP / 76 Def / 216 SpA / 8 SpD
nature: Modest

Set Comments

  • Is a great stallbreaker because Blissey can not touch it, while the others will take severe damage from its attacks. It can also render Jirachi, a common check to the mixed attacker, powerless against it.
  • Dragon Pulse is its main move, hitting the many Dragon-type Pokemon for super effective damage
  • Aura Sphere complements Dragon Pulse, hitting every Pokemon but Shedinja for at least neutral damage. Shadow Ball smashes Lugia, Wobbuffet, Mew, and Mewtwo. Finally, Thunder deals heavy damage to Kyogre, Ho-Oh, Forretress, and Scizor, while also hitting Lugia for super effective damage.
  • Substitute prevents status moves from laying a hand on Giratina-O. Giratina-O's substitutes are fairly bulky can can sometimes survive an attack after a few Calm Minds.
Additional Comments

  • Shadow Ball can be used over Dragon Pulse. Shadow Ball + Aura Sphere is an unresisted combination. Giratina-O forgoes the ability to land an OHKO on its fellow Dragons but gains the ability to hit Mewtwo, Mew, and Wobbuffet for super effective damage while also hitting the likes of Heatran, Tyranitar, and Nattorei for super effective damage.
  • The EV spread lets it survive a Choice Scarf Garchomp's Outrage and Choice Scarf Palkia's Spacial Rend after taking Stealth Rock damage.
  • A spread of 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe with Timid nature can be used to enhance sweeping capabilities, but can also make it easier to revenge kill with the lack of bulky investment

  • Groudon and Dialga are great Stealth Rock setters. Groudon also helps stop Tyranitar in its tracks.
  • Counters: Lugia can Whirlwind its stat boosts away, but fears Shadow Ball. Dialga is also an issue as it takes neutral damage from Giratina-O's Dragon Pulse and can retaliate with its own super effective Dragon-type attack. Tyranitar destroys those without Aura Sphere.
[Team Options]

  • Steel-type Pokemon resist most, if not all, of Giratina-O's weaknesses. Giratina-O in return takes care of their weaknesses
  • Due to its ability to block Rapid Spin, team members that have access to Spikes and Stealth Rock are highly recommended. Toxic Spikes is also welcome
  • Wobbuffet can be used to take out Choice Scarfed enemies and help set up Calm Mind Giratina-O
  • Wish support can be helpful as Giratina-O lacks recovery. Be warned, however, as Giratina-O's HP stat is massive and thus won't receive as much healing from Wish users such as Blissey and Jirachi compared to other Pokemon.
[Optional Changes]

  • Rest and Sleep Talk allow Giratina-O to abuse its bulk to an extent by providing it with a recovery move.
  • Will-o-Wisp can be used to burn unsuspecting enemies. The ability to cripple Tyranitar is excellent
  • Stone Edge smashes Ho-Oh but it has no use outside of that
  • Shadow Force deals an incredible amount of damage to many Pokemon, but due to its charge up turn it can be played around.
  • Thunder Wave can cripple faster Pokemon.
  • Destiny Bond can grab surprise KOes once in a while.
  • Claw Sharpen is Giratina-O's only way of boosting its Attack
[Counters]

  • Lugia walls both the Mixed Attacker and Calm Mind sets, only fearing Shadow Ball. It can Whirlwind away Giratina-O's stat boosts or whittle away at its health with Toxic and Ice Beam
  • Heatran,Tyranitar and Jirachi can be annoying for the Mixed Attacker set if it lacks Earthquake. The former two can also take on the Calm Mind set if it lacks Aura Sphere
  • Giratina-O can be revenged by faster Dragon-type Pokemon as well as Darkrai.
[Dream World]

  • Although its counterpart, Giratina, gets Telepathy from the Dream World, Giratina-O receives no new ability.

Wouldn't Giratina-O also get Telepathy just by having Telepathy as the Altered Forme? Or am I missing something? If it means anything, PO allows you to have Telepathy Giratina-O.

I'm not sure to be honest. One reason I think Giratina-O would not get Telepathy is because no other Levitate Pokemon gets a Dream World ability, barring Bronzong because it has two abilities. I think when Telepathy Giratina transforms into Giratina-O, it just becomes Levitate until Giratina-O transforms back. Someone should test this, though.
