Let's make it six!

Spheal (LC analysis)

[Overview]

<p>Spheal, in Little Cup, draws a lot of comparisons to Stallrein in OU. Though it doesn't have the same great stats nor movepool, Spheal has just enough for it to succeed on a hail team. With hail and Toxic Spikes support, it can stall many a team in the fast-paced Little Cup metagame. Spheal may make you laugh at first glance, but it will soon make you cry after it stalls out your entire team.</p>

[SET]
name: Hail Stall
move1: Substitute
move2: Protect
move3: Super Fang / Blizzard
move4: Aqua Ring / Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Ice Body
nature: Bold
evs: 36 HP / 196 Def / 76 SpA / 196 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>The purpose of this set is to stall your opponent out by alternating between Substitute and Protect; with hail falling, Spheal's Ice Body will activate, which combines with Leftovers to recover the HP required for Substitute in the 2 turns granted by said moves. Super Fang should be used in the third moveslot so opposing Ice-types don't beat this set. In addition, Super Fang is a reliable method of dealing damage, as it halves the remaining health of any non-Ghost-type Pokemon. However, Blizzard is a great STAB for Spheal, as it will deal a good amount of damage even with minimal investment. The fourth move is a matter of personal preference. Aqua Ring is the more desirable move, as after one turn of setup, it will allow Spheal to recover more health than it would lose from using Substitute (over two turns). This is vital for Spheal's longevity, as it can now stall out teams for an indefinite amount of time. However, if there is no room on the team for a Toxic Spikes user, such as Tentacool or Pineco, then Toxic can be used to compensate. The EVs give Spheal 23 HP, so Spheal will only lose 1 HP per turn if not using Aqua Ring. The remaining EVs are used to maximize Spheal's defenses, and the rest go into Special Attack.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>This set desperately needs hail support in order for it to function properly. Thankfully, Snover can set up infinite hail with its Snow Warning ability. This set also enjoys having opposing Hippopotas removed so that hail may prevail. Fortunately, Snover handles Hippopotas with ease. Bronzor and Mantyke also beat Hippopotas with no problems whatsoever. Additionally, Toxic Spikes are vital to the set's success, making your opponent's health rapidly drain away as they struggle to damage Spheal. Leech Seed support is also helpful to Spheal; this way, Spheal can regenerate more health than it loses from Substitute, though it should be noted that Leech Seed is removed when the opponent switches out. Shroomish can provide Leech Seed support, and can use Spore to incapacitate an opponent as well.</p>

[Team Options]

<p>Snover is an obvious partner for Spheal, as a hailstorm is essential to Spheal's success. Shroomish can provide Spore and Leech Seed support, which can possibly grant Spheal greater longevity. Tentacool can use Toxic Spikes, which will rack up residual damage, while also absorbing any Toxic Spikes on your side of the field. Status is particularly crippling to Spheal's ability to stall, so should be avoided at all costs. Having a Spiker to damage opposing grounded Poison-types, is also a good idea, as they can absorb your precious Toxic Spikes with impunity. Having a reliable Ghost-type such as Duskull would be beneficial to block Rapid Spin.</p>

[Optional Changes]

<p>There really isn't anything else that Spheal can do well outside of stalling in a hailstorm, as its movepool is pretty subpar. A Choice Specs set may seem appealing, but Spheal's Special Attack stat isn't that great. Spheal fails to reach a Speed stat of 21 with a Choice Scarf, making it an ineffective Scarfer as well. That being said, Spheal does get some other good options. One notable support move is Encore, which eases prediction when switching Spheal out.<p>

<p>One can opt to tinker with Spheal's defenses to suit one's needs. Its normal spread is 36 HP / 196 Def / 76 SpA / 196 SpD with a Bold nature for equal defenses, but you can change the EVs to make Spheal specialized for taking either physical or special hits. The difference is pretty negligible, however. Adding more EVs into HP is fine only if Aqua Ring is being used, as Spheal will lose 2 HP per turn otherwise.</p>

[Counters]

<p>By far, the best way to stop Spheal from stalling your team out is to prevent hail from being set up. The obvious method is to use Hippopotas, the only other auto-weather Pokémon in the metagame, but unfortunately, it is directly countered by Snover. Hippopotas, in tandem with one or two of Snover's checks (such as Bronzor, Growlithe, and Munchlax), would make a good core to stop Spheal cold. Skill Link Shellder also gets a mention, as it can damage Spheal through its Substitute with a super effective Rock Blast. Finally, weather moves, such as Rain Dance and Sunny Day, also prevent Spheal from endless stalling.</p>

Perhaps another viable set is an offensive trick rooms set? Since trick room teams are more effective in LC than other tiers. perhaps EQ, Ice Beam, Surf, Blizzard.

Rock Blast and Double Kick should get a small mention the counters. Skill Link Shellder can really hurt Spheal with that Rock Blast. Spikes and Stealth Rock should probably be mentioned in Team Options as well, so you have some form of residual damage going with hail if Croagunk comes in and ruins your Toxic Spikes. In the same sense, Duskull would work great as a teammate for blocking the rare spinner. I'm going to test a Curse and Avalanche set, but everything else looks good here. Well done.

[OVERVIEW]

<p>Spheal, in Little Cup, draws a lot of comparisons to Stallrein, in OU,. Tthough it doesn't have the same great stats nor a great movepool, it has just enough for it to succeed in a snowstorm. With Hail and Toxic Spikes support from your team Snover, and toxic or toxic spikes from another supporter, it can stall many a out a bunch of teams in this fast-paced metagame. Unfortunately, it needs a great amount of team support to succeed, but with said support, it can effectively force your opponent to rip his or her hair out while trying to inflict damage. Spheal may make you laugh at first glance, then make you cry after it stalls out your entire team.</p>

[SET]

name: Hail Stall
move1: Substitute
move2: Protect
move3: Blizzard
move4: Aqua Ring / Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Ice Body
nature: Bold
evs: 736 HP / 196 Def / 376 SpA / 196 SpD (Stallrein NEEDS a HP number divisible by 4 to indefinitely stall out the opoonent..)

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>The purpose of this set is to stall your opponent out by alternating between Substitute and Protect as with Hail falling, Ice Body and Leftovers, Spheal will heal off the HP required for Substitute in the 2 turns granted by said moves. Blizzard is a great STAB attack that hits like a truck, even without investment in Special Attack, with perfect accuracy in hail and the fourth move is a matter of personal preference. Aqua Ring is the more desirable move, allowing Spheal to recover, over two turns, more health than it would lose using Substitute with just one turn of set up. However, if there is no room on the team for a Toxic Spiker, such as Tentacool or Pineco, Toxic can be used to compensate. Ice Body and Leftovers allow Spheal to only lose one Hit Point every two turns, after using Substitute. The EVs give Spheal 243 HP (, which is divisible by 4 and so allow Spheal to stall indefinitely, or at least until it runs out of PP only loses one HP per two turns), while maximizing its defenses. The remaining EVs go into Special Attack.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>This set desperately needs Hail support in order for it to function properly. Thankfully, Snover can set up infinite hail. This set also enjoys having Hippopotas removed from the other side of the field, so that hail may prevail will be the only weather condition on the field. Fortunately, Snover handles Hippopotas with ease. Bronzor and Mantyke also beat Hippopotas with no problems whatsoever. Toxic Spikes are also pretty important to the set's success, making your opponents gradually lose more health while not being able to touch Spheal at all. In addition, Leech Seed support is helpful to Spheal. This way, Spheal can regenerate more health than it loses from Substitute, though it should be noted that Leech Seed is removed when the opponent switches out may not be very successful, because switching out removes Leech Seed. Shroomish can provide this kind of support, and can use Spore to incapacitate an opponent as well. Toxic Spikes are also nice, which will make opponents even more mad by gradually losing health while not being able to touch Spheal at all.</p>

[TEAM OPTIONS]

<p>Snover is an obvious partner for Spheal, so it can stall effectively. Shroomish can provide Spore and Leech Seed support, which can possibly grant Spheal a longer life lives. Tentacool can use Toxic Spikes, which will rack up residual damage, while also absorbing them on your side of the field. Status is particularly crippling to Spheal's ability to stall and so should be avoided at all costs Spheal cannot be statused at all, or it's all over for Spheal's stalling ability. Having a Spiker to damage opposing grounded Poison-types is also a good idea, as Croagunk they can absorbs Toxic Spikes with impunity. In addition, having a spinblocker such as Duskull would be beneficial to block Rapid Spin stop the uncommon spinner.</p>

[OPTIONAL CHANGES]

<p> There really isn't anything else that Spheal can do well outside of stalling in a snowstorm, as and, adding insult to injury, it's movepool really isn't great. A Special Choice set may look appealing, but Spheal's sSpecial aAttack stat isn't great nor does it reach a Speed stat of 21, with a Choice Scarf, making it an ineffective Scarf-er, and it doesn't even hit 21 speed with a Choice Scarf.<p>

<p>However, one can opt to tinker with Spheal's defenses. It's normal spread is evs: 736 HP / 196 Def / 376 SpA / 196 SpD with a Bold nature for equal defenses, but you can change the spread and EVs if you want Spheal to take physical hits or special hits better. The difference is pretty negligible, however.</p>

The c/p version has some more edits that I missed out first time round..

EDIT2:
Wait a sec, forgot that Ice Body and Leftovers are separate and so only heal 1 each instead of a total of 3. Which means that Spheal will need to have a HP divisible by 16. Spheal can't reach below 16 or 32 HP, so Spheal is just about screwed to losing 2 HP every 2 turns.. Well, that sucks.. >_> Guess you can counter-edit those EV edits..

The set itself is obviously fine, but Spheal has lots of cool options that it might be a good idea to test. Notable ones I can think of include Super Fang, Encore, Yawn, and Roar. Spheal has pretty good defensive stats even without Ice Body (though Ice Body is pretty much superior to Thick Fat on Spheal), so it can probably use some of those. Super Fang and Encore seem the best out of those two, so try testing them and so will I?

sure thing.

server's down. =[ (really wanted to test encore)

-- note: I won't be active until Friday afternoon - I'm swamped with a shitload of work.

Bumping to see if anything worked. I always found time for an encore (sorry no logs) but opponents always bring in scarf mankeys and machops so it really doesn't work. I'll put it in oc when I get the chance to edit this thoroughly.

Actually I've found that with 24 HP (6 HP subs), Spheal doesn't recover enough HP each turn to have a perpetual cycle of Substitute + Protect (2 HP each turn, right?). You NEED to use Aqua Ring, which is rather disappointing.

I've also found Super Fang to be pretty good and worth a mention. Not so positive about Roar or Yawn (since Toxic Spikes should be up -.-).

That's why this spheal has 23 hp. I'll mention super fang in oc, unless you think it ca warrant a set.

EDIT: EM's changes implemented.

Can't you slash Super Fang with Blizzard? Blizzard doesn't hit ice types that aren't Snover well.

...Like...Smoochum. And Snorunt. And, um, other Spheal.

You would want to be caught unprepared by those bamfs, would you?

I'm going to suggest Super Fang to be put in the first slash, as any ice types would wall this set due to lack of hail damage. Therefore, your only way out would be to use Super Fang to damage your opponents.

I'd eventually like to test Encore as well, but Gen V and PokeLab being down is making this more difficult. However, all that needs to be done is for you mention to Rain Dance in the counters since it can remove hail, it looks good to go at this point. Approved.

I guess there's no way to make it so that spheal gets 25% of its health back in two turns (without Aqua Ring), but this should still be stamped.

good job on this, excellent prose in particular (probably because fate checked this) but there were some grammar issues.
