Kuitaran

[Overview]

  • Good Special Attack and a good ability in Flash Fire.
  • Gets good priority in Sucker Punch.
  • Bad defenses and terrible Speed.
  • Movepool isn't that great. (No good physical Fire STAB...it doesn't even get Overheat...)
  • Pretty much outclassed by Houndoom offensively due to useful secondary STAB, a much better movepool, and much better Special Attack and Speed.
  • However, Kuitaran can cause some decent damage when used with Trick Room support.

Set Comments

  • Kuitaran's terrible Speed but good Special Attack allow him to function well in Trick Room.
  • Life Orb STAB Fire Blast coming off of 339 Special Attack will put a large dent into most things.
  • Unlike other slow Fire-types such as Emboar, Kuitaran does have a couple of nice quirks in the form of Flash Fire and and priority in Sucker Punch.
  • Focus Blast nails most Rock-types for a 2HKO at least.
  • Hidden Power Ice covers Dragon-types such as Salamence, but Hidden Power Grass can be used to nail Swampert and at least do some damage to Water-types.
Additional Comments:

  • Hidden Power Electric can be used if you fear Gyarados more than Swampert.
  • Quiet Nature and 0 Speed IV allow Kuitaran to be as slow as possible, increasing the likelihood it will go first under Trick Room. The HP investment allows Kuitaran to actually survive a strong neutral hit and come in on resisted hits.
  • You can invest more EVs into Attack to power up Sucker Punch.
  • Solarbeam is an option, but if Kyogre, Rayquaza, Tyranitar, or Hippowdon come in on Kuitaran as it tries to use Solarbeam, it will be stuck on the charge up turn and thus be prone to getting KOed.
Teammates & Counters:

  • Kuitaran requires Trick Room to be effective. Dialga, Palkia, Erufuun, Rankurusu, Dusclops, and Porygon2 are all effective users of this move.
  • Groudon can take advantage of Trick Room as well and provides sunlight to power up Kuitaran's attacks.
  • Kyogre and Blissey don't care about anything Kuitaran does and can beat it with Surf/Toxic respectively.
  • Bulky Waters such as Suicune and Vaporeon can easily wall Kuitaran without Hidden Power Grass while Dragon-types such as Salamence and Latias wall it without Hidden Power Ice.
  • Ho-Oh totally walls Kuitaran.
  • Palkia can take care of Kyogre and Blissey pretty easily.
  • Grass-types such as Erufuun and Tangrowth can either set up/benefit from Trick Room and beat up Bulky Waters. Dialga and Palkia are also good counters to Bulky Waters.
  • Pre-Evolution Stone Porygon2 can take on Salamence well.
  • Metagross is a fine Latias counter.
  • Ho-Oh can be checked by Stealth Rock in tandem with a spin blocker such as Giratina-O.
[Team Options]

  • Anything that can set up Trick Room, sunlight (Groudon), and entry hazards.
  • Grass-types to help beat Water-types.
  • Fighting-types such as Roobushin can take care of Blissey.
  • Palkia is probably the best switch in to Kyogre currently and it can easily destroy it with Outrage/Thunder.
[Optional Changes]

  • Gluttony can be used as the ability, but Kuitaran doesn't have the stats to take advantage of it well.
  • Choice Scarf/Specs can be used to give Kuitaran more speed/power, but Heatran does that better due to better typing, Speed, and Special Attack.
  • Curse can be used with Sucker Punch to boost Kuitaran's Attack while giving it a strong priority move to sweep with, but Kuitaran really isn't bulky enough to use Curse well and it has no physical Fire STAB.
  • Rock Tomb is your best option against Ho-Oh.
  • Will-O-Wisp and Taunt provide good support moves for Kuitaran to use.
[Counters]

  • Blissey, Kyogre, and Ho-Oh wall Kuitaran completely.
  • Bulky Waters/Dragon-types depending on the Hidden Power wall it.
  • Without Trick Room support, anything faster with a strong STAB or super effective attack that isn't weak to Sucker Punch can curbstomp Kuitaran.
[Dream World]

  • Kuitaran gets the ability White Smoke from the Dream World.
  • Aside from preventing Intimidate from working, White Smoke has no use whatsoever for Kuitaran.

Fixed some formatting, marked as done. Ffs, dude, it's Teammates & Counters, not Counters & Teammates (And Optional Changes, not Other Options)! :P
