Stunky (Analysis)

Stunky (LC analysis)

[Overview]

Stunky retains the same role it played in Generation IV: being the number-one check to Misdreavus. It can take a Shadow Ball or Hidden Power Fighting with ease, and easily KO Misdreavus with a STAB Dark-type attack. It has above-average attacking stats and good Speed; however, it unfortunately misses the coveted 19 Speed tier by a single point. Its nice typing leaves it with only one weakness, which is to regrettably common Ground-type attacks. This allows Gligar, one of the most used Pokemon in the tier, to serve as a near-surefire check to Stunky every time. Still, Stunky is a good Pokemon to use if Ghost-types are giving your team trouble.

[Set Comments]

This set is Stunky's best chance at attempting a sweep. With the given moves, Stunky can easily beat Misdreavus, one of the biggest threats in the metagame. Pursuit is great for trapping not only Misdreavus, but all Ghost-types as well. Crunch is Stunky's most reliable STAB attack, but Sucker Punch can allow it to OHKO numerous faster threats, such as Diglett. Fire Blast absolutely destroys Ferroseed, and does big damage to Bronzor as well. Flamethrower is a perfectly viable alternative if Fire Blast's poor accuracy is off-putting. Hidden Power Ground rounds out the set, allowing Stunky to get super effective coverage on other and most Rock-types, and beat Rock Polish Aron one-on-one. Life Orb is important, as it allows Stunky to get as much power as possible. For EVs, Attack and Speed are maximized, and since Stunky does not hit 19 HP, an extra point is added to HP.

[Additional Comments]

Pokemon immune to Ground-type attacks are good teammates. Aqua Tail Gligar is a great option, as it can also remove opposing Gligar. Bronzor is also a good partner, as it covers Stunky's lone weakness, and can remove opposing Gligar from the battle. It can also set up Stealth Rock, something that Stunky will enjoy. Eviolite Slowpoke is another decent partner, as Stunky can sponge Ghost- and Dark-type attacks aimed at it. Misdreavus and some other Ghost-types are nice teammates, since they have perfect synergy with Stunky. Wynaut is also good for trapping most of Stunky's counters.

[Other Options]

Stunky doesn't have a lot of other options. It still retains Explosion, but it isn't as potent as it once was since it doesn't halve the opposing Pokemon's Defense. Hone Claws is Stunky's only viable boosting move, but in most cases, Stunky would rather have another attacking option. Hidden Power Ice can be used over Hidden Power Ground in order to beat Gligar, but it must be on the switch, since most Gligar outspeed Stunky. Stunky can feasibly run a Choice Scarf set, but the additional power and ability to switch attacks that Life Orb provides is better in most cases. Finally, Stunky can run a Lum Berry over Life Orb in order to cure a possible burn from Misdreavus or Frillish.

[Checks and Counters]

Though it must watch out for Crunch, Frillish can switch in and cripple Stunky with Will-O-Wisp. Bulky Choice Scarf users that don't take much damage from Sucker Punch also fare well against Stunky. Chioce Scarf Magnemite can hit Stunky hard with Thunderbolt, and takes next to nothing from Sucker Punch (though Magnemite must watch out for Fire Blast or Hidden Power Ground on the switch). Gligar doesn't take much from Sucker Punch, and can outspeed and OHKO Stunky with Earthquake, but must be aware of Hidden Power Ice. Hippopotas doesn't take much damage from it either, and though Hippopotas cannot outspeed Stunky, its high defenses and an Eviolite boost will allow it to take repeated hits and easily dispatch Stunky with its STAB Earthquake. Finally, bulky Fighting-types such as Timburr can use Stunky as setup bait.

[Dream World]

Stunky gets Keen Eye, which serves little purpose and is nowhere nearly as useful as Aftermath.

- has Hone Claws (Claw Sharpen), but the additional attack is preferable

- allows Stunky to beat one of the biggest threats in the metagame - misdreavus

Mention to watch out for Will-o-wisp. (Lum in OC perhaps)

What? Attack like attack power, or like moveslot?

Anyway, imo HP Ice>Ground. Crunch/Sucker Punch hits Rock-types, bar Aron, neutrally, and Gligar is everywhere, being more common than Rhyhorn+Geodude+Onix+Larvitar+Nosepass+Aron combined. Or close enough, anyway.

You should probably list some of those Scarfed pokemon that beat it, like Kojofu and Houndour.

Also in counters, mention Magnemite needs to watch out for HP Ground, 'cause it does. Ditto with Gligar and HP Ice.

Also, with HP Ice, Houndour resists every attack.

Bulky fighting-types like Dokkora and Zuruggu see Stunky as free setup. Mention?

Mention Return somewhere? It hits Dark-types like Murkrow and Fighting-types like Kojo, so it's useful. It also doesn't kill you, like Explosion.

I think Balloon should be slashed, because it allows you to safely switch in to Gligar or Aron and kill it with HP Ice or Ground repectively.

I think stall breaker is a better name for the set, as stunky can beat stall, abosrbing Tspikes and killing Ferroseed and Frillish among others. It is also a more appropriate title if Balloon is slashed. :p

There is no need for Team Options, but maybe some of work it into the additional comments section, as it is useful information.

+2 Jolly 156 attack (the heysup standard) Gligar Stone Edge vs 12 hp Hasty Stunky: 108.7% - 130.4%

Jolly 196 attack LO Aron Head Smash vs 12 hp Hasty Stunky: 156.5% - 187%

Also Head Smash hits harder than EQ

Oh dear, that's not good :( OK so balloon isnt a great option there. Worth a shot

I dont think HP Ice is actually worth mentioning at all, what with eviolite running around everywhere. Stunky definitely prefers the other options listed

Stench got a new boost this gen, now all moves have a chance to flinch, (If Serebii is correct) so I was wondering if it could be good to get an extra turn scot-free.
