Krabby (Analysis) [QC 2/2]

I wrote up a rough draft of the analysis for the sets, even though QC will probably make me change a lot. If anyone wants more detail on something, check what I wrote for it. But really, this is just for me to think through what I'm putting down in the skeleton.

[Overview]

In the great sea of Water-type pokemon in Little Cup, Krabby stands out as one of the most notable. Krabby's Attack stat is on par with many fully evolved pokemon, being the fourth highest in all of Little Cup. To add to its offensive arsenal, it boasts a great STAB and can boost its stats even higher. Furthermore, Krabby's Defense stat is excellent and it can easily take a physical hit or two while it dishes out damage. As icing on the cake, Krabby's abilities prevent critical hits or Attack drops, very useful things on an offensive Pokemon.

However, the transition to the Fifth Generation did not go well for Krabby. The introduction of the Eviolite item has made it much more difficult for Krabby to break through physical walls. In addition, the combination of Water-type and Normal-type moves no longer achieve perfect type coverage, utterly walled by the ubiquitous Ferroseed and Frillish. To make matters worse, Krabby lacks any semblance of special bulk, and it is threatened by any special attacker that out-speeds it. Despite these setbacks, Krabby can smash through unprepared teams and will perform excellently with the proper support.

[SET]
name: Crab Dance
move 1: Agility
move 2: Swords Dance
move 3: Crabhammer
move 4: Return
item: Oran Berry / Life Orb
ability: Hyper Cutter
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 196 Spe / 36 HP / 36 Def

[Set Comments]

With access to both Agility and Swords Dance, Krabby can become an effective Double Dancer. Krabby's immense power and decent physical bulk allow it to threaten many things upon switching in. When the opponent switches out, Krabby can set up, boosting the appropriate stat to match the opponent's team. Against frail, offensive teams, Agility can allow Krabby to out-speed and OHKO opposing Pokemon. When faced with a slow, bulky offense or stall teams, Krabby can nab a Swords Dance to muscle its way through. Even with Team Preview, it is best to scout the opponent's team before bringing Krabby in. Bringing Krabby in late-game also comes with the benefit of weakening the enemy team. Because many of Krabby's checks can only handle it when they are at or near full health; this makes it much easier for Krabby to sweep.

Agility and Swords Dance are obvious moves on the set, giving Krabby the ability to set up for a sweep. After an Agility, Krabby reaches 28 Speed, out-speeding even 18 Speed Pokemon holding a Choice Scarf. Swords Dance, on the other hand, puts Krabby at 44 Attack, enough to OHKO a significant portion of the metagame. Unfortunately, Krabby has to rely on the inaccurate Crabhammer for a STAB move. However, Crabhammer packs a nice 90 base power, meaning that it will dent anything that doesn't resist it. Return is a strong secondary move which provides great neutral coverage alongside Crabhammer (resisted only by Ferroseed and Frillish).

[Additional Comments]

The EVs for this set, as well as the nature, are fairly standard for a sweeper. Atk EVs are maximized and an Adamant nature is used so that Krabby can hit as hard as possible. 196 Speed EVs make sure that Krabby will almost never be out-sped after an Agility. The remaining EVs are divided between HP and Defense to give an extra point in each stat. Oran Berry is the primary choice of item, as the healing it provides can keep Krabby's health out of KO range for most revenge-killers. In addition, it can allow Krabby one more turn of set-up against certain Pokemon. However, Life Orb is also a viable option, as the boost in power is useful to any Pokemon attempting a sweep. If a Life Orb is used, then a new EV spread of 236 Atk / 196 Spe / 36 Def should be used, so that Krabby will only have 19 HP. This rounds the recoil from Life Orb down to 1 HP, greatly increasing Krabby's durability. Hyper Cutter is the preferred ability so that Krabby will never have to worry about losing power to Pokemon with the FeatherDance move or Intimidate ability, which could otherwise prevent a sweep. There are other options are far as moves go. Superpower or X-Scissor can be used over either boosting move to get past Ferroseed and Slowpoke respectively, two of this set's biggest counters. However, this is not recommended as it makes the set less flexible and limits Krabby's overall sweeping potential.

Krabby, like all sweepers, particularly benefits from entry hazard support, particularly Stealth Rock, as it gains Krabby several notable KOes, such as the 2HKO on max Defense Slowpoke holding Eviolite. An excellent partner to provide Stealth Rock is Ferroseed, as it resists both of Krabby's weaknesses and can switch into most special attacks easily. In addition, Ferroseed can provide Spikes as well as Stealth Rock. Bronzor works similarly, though it lacks a resistance to Electric-type moves and has no form of recovery outside of an Oran Berry. Gligar can provide Stealth Rock, an immunity to Electric-type moves, and has access to recovery in Roost. As far as checks go, Croagunk is able to switch in on Crabhammer and hit Krabby with a STAB Vacuum Wave, though it will do a maximum of 65% damage to Krabby, making Croagunk an unreliable check. Mantyke is also able to switch in freely against Crabhammer and can dispose of Krabby with a super effective Hidden Power. However, it must beware, as a Life Orb boosted Return will OHKO it after Stealth Rock. Chinchou and Staryu are able to check Krabby with Thunderbolt, although they take a hefty amount from Return as well. Ferroseed is able to switch in on either attack, even at +2, and proceed to drain Krabby with Leech Seed or attack with a STAB Seed Bomb. Similarly, Slowpoke can come in with minimal risk and defeat Krabby with one of its special attacks, such as Psychic. Misdreavus and Gastly are excellent partners for this set, being able to hit all of the aforementioned Pokemon super effectively, barring Chinchou. Magnemite can trap an KO Ferroseed, as well as pose a threat to Mantyke and Slowpoke, although Slowpoke does threaten back with Fire Blast. Lastly, the same team-mates who can set up Stealth Rock can also handle most of Krabby's checks.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Crabhammer
move 2: Return
move 3: Superpower
move 4: X-Scissor
item: Choice Band
ability: Shell Armor
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 196 Spe / 36 HP / 36 Def

[Set Comments]

Krabby has an enormous Attack and relatively low Speed, so it comes as no surprise that it can utilize a Choice Band well. Instead of attempting to boost its stats in preparation for a sweep, this set hits hard right off the bat with a whopping 33 Attack, and not many Pokemon can take a boosted hit from Krabby. The real beauty of this set, though, is that it is able to defeat most of Krabby's usual counters. For example, Slowpoke is always 2HKOed by X-Scissor, and is out-sped, so it cannot wall this set; Ferroseed is in the same boat, being OHKOed by Superpower.

Crabhammer is the main move of the set, being the strongest, and has pretty good type coverage. Return, as on the previous set, allows Krabby to hit most of the Pokemon who resist Water-type moves. Superpower is Krabby's third move, destroying Ferroseed and other Steel-types, also turns Krabby into one of the best checks to Dragon Dance Scraggy; it always survives a +1 Drain Punch and OHKOes back with Superpower. X-Scissor is Krabby's best bet against Grass-type Pokemon who resist Krabby's STAB, such as Cottonee, and enables Krabby to defeat Slowpoke.

[Additional Comments]

The EV spread is pretty simple here, maximizing Krabby's attack and Speed for the greatest damage output, whilst also gaining a bonus point in HP and Defense. However, because Krabby will be slower than most other offensive Pokemon, and therefore likely take a few hits, an alternative EV spread of 236 Atk / 196 HP / 36 Def / 36 Spe is also viable. The loss of Speed is not much of a problem, given that all Krabby needs to out-speed is defensive Pokemon anyway. An Adamant nature gives Krabby as much power as possible. Because this Krabby will likely take some attacks, Shell Armor is the preferred ability, so that an untimely critical hit will not take it out. The item, Choice Band, is obviously the focus of the set. Another move that could be used on this set is Rock Slide, which, along with Krabby's Sheer Force ability, has fairly decent power and type coverage. However, the Pokemon that would merit its use will generally force this Krabby out anyway, making it a fairly situational option.

Because this Krabby can significantly weaken its own checks and counters, Pokemon who share those checks or counters make excellent teammates. This generally includes offensive Water-type Pokemon, most notably Totodile and Carvanha. Other great partners are those who can easily switch in on special attacks, as this set's lack of Speed make their users particularly threatening. Munchlax stands out as one of the best, though Ferroseed is also a good choice, resisting both of Krabby's weaknesses. With the right move, Krabby is able to threaten any switch-in, so this set doesn't have counters per se. However, Pokemon who can threaten a fast, super-effective attack can serve as checks, assuming they get in for free. These include the previously mentioned Mantyke, Staryu, and Chinchou. Murkrow can check this set, hitting it hard with a STAB Dark Pulse, or lowering its Attack with FeatherDance. Snover can hit this set hard with its Giga Drain or Energy Ball, though a Superpower or X-Scissor can put it down as it switches in. Ghost-type Pokemon are perhaps the best choice when dealing with this set, being immune to two moves and resistant to a third. Gastly and Misdreavus can OHKO Krabby with their powerful attacks, while others can use Will-o-Wisp to cripple Krabby for the remainder of the match. Pokemon who can handle these threats can make it much easier for Krabby to do its job. Scraggy and Houndour are both good teammates for their ability to take out Ghost-type Pokemon, while Ferroseed can wall the three mentioned Water-types.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Crabhammer
move 2: Return
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: X-Scissor
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Sheer Force
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 196 Spe / 36 HP / 36 Def

[Set Comments]

Krabby may seem a strange candidate for a Choice Scarf, but it is quite capable when taking on the role of a revenge-killer. What differentiates Krabby from other Choice Scarf users is, once again, its high Attack. Although the Attack is not boosted on this set, it is still quite high and allows Krabby to revenge-kill threats at higher health than many other Pokemon. For example, Krabby's Rock Slide will OHKO most Murkrow holding the Eviolite item. With a Choice Scarf, Krabby reaches 21 Speed, out-speeding all unboosted Pokemon in Little Cup.

As always, Crabhammer is Krabby's STAB move and the strongest on the set, while Return returns on this set to grant excellent neutral type-coverage. What's different on this set is Rock Slide, which allows Krabby to revenge-kill threats such as Murkrow, Mantyke, and even Snover, though X-Scissor works just as well for it. Also, the ability, Sheer Force, boosts the power of Rock Slide, effectively giving it 97.5 base power, though at the cost of its 30% flinch chance. X-Scissor remains on the set for Grass-type Pokemon, but, due to the lack of Superpower, is also Krabby's best choice against most Dark-type Pokemon as well.

[Additional Comments]

The EV spread is the same as the other sets. 196 Speed EVs, gives Krabby the "magic" 14 Speed, which, as mentioned above, allows it to out-speed all unboosted Pokemon in Little Cup. 236 Atk EVs, as well as the Adamant nature, enable Krabby to revenge-kill as many things as possible. The remaining EVs add just a little but more bulk, making switch-ins easier. Krabby really needs the Speed and power, so it lacks any other options in the EV department. The item, Choice Scarf, is the crux of the set. Sheer Force is chosen as the ability in order to boost the power of Rock Slide, making the move much more powerful. Superpower can work on this set over X-Scissor, however, it is illegal with Sheer Force and would significantly weaken Rock Slide, thus making it a generally inferior option.

This set doesn't necessarily have good teammates, as its main purpose is serve as a revenge-killer. However, this set is able to get surprise KOes on Pokemon such as Murkrow, who expect to be able to KO Krabby first. Therefore, Pokemon who benefit from the removal of fast and frail opponents can work as good teammates. Because this set has no way to boost its power, very bulky Pokemon are able to come in and wall it, such as Slowpoke and Ferroseed. Ghost-type Pokemon can be problematic for this set as well, though to a lesser extent than the previous set. Most of Krabby's normal checks, fast special attackers, can be dealt with by attacking them as they switch in, then out-speeding and finishing them off the next turn. The best way to deal with this set is to take advantage of it being licked into one move. It's inability to change moves, combined with the lack of additional power, mean that bringing in a Pokemon who resists the move Krabby uses will almost always shut Krabby down and force it out.

Since there is no Team Options section anymore, I just placed the best teammates in the sets. I tried not to be too repetitive though.

Anyway, on with the Skeleton!

Krabby

QC [1/2] (ShinyAzelf)

[Overview]

 • Gigantic Attack stat
 • Good Defense stat
 • Boosting moves combined with acceptable movepool
 • useful abilities
 • the existance of Eviolite sux 4 offensive Pokemon
 • Normal/Water coverage is much worse this Gen
 • scores a 0 on the special bulk scale

[SET]
name: Crab Dance or Boosting Sweeper (whatever works)
move 1: Agility
move 2: Swords Dance
move 3: Crabhammer
move 4: Return
item: Oran Berry / Life Orb
ability: Hyper Cutter
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 196 Spe / 36 HP / 36 Def

[Set Comments]

 • come in on something you threaten and boost on the switch
 • use the right boost to match the opponent's team
 • Crabhammer is only good STAB move :(
 • Return to have good coverage
 • works best late-game

[Additional Comments]

 • Oran Berry can prevent death from priority or possibly give another turn to set up
 • Life Orb = power
 • If you use Life Orb, don't have 36 HP EVs, so that you'll have 19 HP and take less Life Orb recoil
 • Hyper Cutter > Intimidate
 • Hyper Cutter: "screw you FeatherDance Murkrow"
 • Brick Break or X-Scissor can be used over either boosting move to provide extra coverage, however, it decreases the flexibility of the set and can deprive you of the best stat-up move in certain scenarios
 • loves hazards
 • Ferroseed is best for hazards cuz it resists Krabby's weaknesses and has Spikes + Stealth Rock
 • Bronzor resists Grass and has SR, Gligar resists Electric and has SR
 • Croagunk Vacuum Wave deal with this set when weakened
 • fast special attackers can check it, though they typically hate switching into Life Orb boosted Return
 • Ferroseed, Slowpoke, and Frillish wall this set to hell and back
 • best partners can deal with those checks/counters, Magnemite is generally good for that

[SET]
name: Physical Attacker
move 1: Crabhammer
move 2: Return
move 3: Superpower
move 4: X-Scissor
item: Life Orb
ability: Shell Armor
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 196 Spe/ 36 HP / 36 Def

[Set Comments]

 • hits like a freaking truck and OHKOes a large portion of the metagame with the right move
 • since it's gonna be slow, hitting things on the switch is perhaps the best strategy
 • beats many typical counters, such as Slowpoke and Ferroseed and can destroy most special attackers on the switch-in
 • Return + Crabhammer = same as last set
 • Superpower > Ferroseed and also makes it an amazing check to DD Scraggy
 • X-Scissor > Grass-types who resist Water and also Slowpoke

[Additional Comments]

 • Can switch the Speed and HP EVs for more bulk because this set is slow anyway
 • it's slow so it'll take attacks; Shell Armor prevents those attacks from critting
 • Rock Slide works with Sheer Force, but the things that Rock Slide is good for are faster and can threaten you anyway; therefore, Superpower is better
 • fast special attackers are worse for this set, as it has no hope of out-speeding them; therefore, partners like Munchlax and Ferroseed are good
 • weakens or beats many of its own counters, so Pokemon with similar counters are good; the best are prolly Totodile and Carvanha
 • Murkrow and Snover are good checks as they can KO or, in Murkrow's case, lower Attack; but they must switch in safely first
 • Ghost-types can come in on 3 of the moves and cripple/KO Krabby
 • Dark-types, such as Scraggy and Houndour, beat opposing Ghost-types
 • Choice Band can be used for more power, such as the guaranteed OHKO on Ferroseed and max HP Gligar, however the freedom to change moves generally makes Life Orb the preferred option

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Crabhammer
move 2: Return
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: X-Scissor
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Sheer Force
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 196 Spe / 36 HP / 36 Def

[Set Comments]

 • high Attack lets gives it a larger revenging-range than most other Scarfers
 • reaches the "magic" 14 Speed, so it gets to 21 with Scarf
 • Sheer Force + Rock Slide = awesome
 • Rock Slide > Supwerpower because more of the fast things that you'll be revenging are hit SE by Rock Slide than by Superpower
 • X-Scissor still the best choice for the final coverage move

[Additional Comments]

 • Superpower can go over X-Scissor but it's illegal with Sheer Force so Rock Slide will be weaker; not recommended
 • Not really any good teammates, but I guess Pokemon who like having fast threats gone?
 • weaker than other sets, once again walled by Ferroseed and (to a lesser extent) Slowpoke
 • Ghost-types still an issue, but less so than the last set
 • Being locked into one move means it has to switch a lot; Rapid Spin support could be useful, though it's hardly necessary

[Other Options]

 • Krabby could run a defensive set with Toxic / Knock Off / Crabhammer / filler (maybe Iron Defense?), but Krabby would die way too fast cuz no recovery and no special bulk; also, it's prolly outclassed by something; so it's no good
 • Jolly could be used on the sets, but its benefits pale in comparison to Adamant
 • Brick Break can replace Superpower, but the loss of power is rarely worth it
 • Oppostie of that, Return is better than Double-Edge due to having no recoil (Double-Edge is illegal with Agility anyway)
 • Could run a Sash set with Flail, but the times it would actually work are very few; so it's no good

[Checks and Counters]

 • frillish FRILLISH FRILLISH
 • Drought sux cuz Crabhammer does 50% damage
 • It's been said before, but Ghost-types trouble the Choiced sets
 • this one bears repeating: fast special attackers can't switch in (normally) but they can easily KO Krabby once they do get in
 • Slowpoke and Ferroseed, though Krabby can beat them with Superpower and X-Scissor respectively
 • Krabby, like all physically-based Pokemon, hates burns

Doesn't Dublious or whatever have Krabby reserved? Although it's been there for a long time as a placeholder, he might give it to you if you ask

So I guess some mod can lock his placeholder.
Check the index. It is post #32.

Oh alright sorry I didn't know :) Just so this isn't a useless post, something with Agility might be interesting with Shear Force (Encourage) boosting Waterfall and Rock Slide, which all get boosted

Oh alright sorry I didn't know :) Just so this isn't a useless post, something with Agility might be interesting with Shear Force (Encourage) boosting Waterfall and Rock Slide, which all get boosted
Unfortunately, Krabby does not get Waterfall. He only gets Crabhammer.
Which means that Rock Slide is the only move he gets that works with Shear Force.
And to use Shear Force, he must give up Superpower.

un-boosted Superpower > boosted Rock Slide

But I see why you posted that. Almost every Water-type gets Waterfall. And Krabby is a kinda obscure poke, so not everyone knows about his movepool issues.

All superpower hits that Water/Rock doesn't is Tesshiido (in little cup). Superpower also doesn't KO and Tesshiido will just KO you back anyway. Didn't know it doesn't get Waterfall though, that sucks. I guess Hyper Cutter would be better for all those annoying Featherdance Murkrows, although Rock Slide gets the Sheer Force boost

But with a Choice Band or a Swords Dance, it does KO Tesshiido, and the only notable pokemon hit by Rock Slide is Murkrow.

Ice is hit by Superpower, Fire is hit by Crabhammer, the only notable bug is Meraruba who gets hit by Crabhammer. Really, Flying types are the only reason to use Rock Slide, and Murkrow is the only good Flying.

Max/Max Bold Murkrow holding an Evo Stone gets 2HKOed by Crabhammer anyway. And by running Max/Max, Murkrow fails to KO with Dark Pulse.

I'd rather be protected against random Intimidate pokes or Featherdance than worry about Murkrow. But maybe that's just me...

Agility is illegal with Sheer Force. It only gets it by breeding in HGSS.

I messed up my egg moves with my Move tutor moves. It can have Agility and Sheer Force.

Yeah I've used it before, it works. Well I don't think we should be discussing Krabby here, I look forward to this analysis (that's really all I can say without making this seem really awkward, although it should be good :)

Damn, it took me a long time to get around to this.

Anyway, this is my first analysis ever, so comments are much appreciated!

Also, I know that CB and CS sets are normally combined into a single Choice set, but when I used them they seemed so different in playing that I decided to give them each their own.

Are there any important KOs Band gets thay Life Orb doesn't? If not Life Orb really outclasses the Choice Band giving freedom to switch moves. You could rename the set Physical Attacker and AC mention Choice Band

Eviolite does not suck for offensive Pokemon, it allows you to live some hits or help make sure you get an Agility off

Crab Dance makes me skeptical with two boosting moves, it is also how long it takes for opponent to switch to a counter, really without Eviolite I can't see it having much a chance to get both off moves

I don't think Agility and Swords Dance should be on the same set. I suppose you could have one Agility set, and one Swords Dance set, but it's very hard to set up both, even with Oran Berry / Eviolite. You could mention in Other Options that one could use both on a set, but is not recommended because it's very hard to set up.

Also, I agree with TheFemaleTyrouge, Life Orb > Choice Band, and name the set "Physical Attacker". Leave Choice Band in AC.

You miss out on the guaranteed OHKO on Ferroseed with Superpower, as well as the guaranteed OHKO on max HP Gligar using Crabhammer.

But the freedom to change moves would be great, and ShinyAzelf agrees, so I'll make that change. Thanks! :)

NO NO NO. That's not what I meant at all. I meant it sucks because of the huge boost it gives to defensive Pokemon. I meant it sucks because it makes it harder for a Pokemon to just sweep through everything. I did not mean that it sucks when used by an offensive Pokemon.

Well, the idea of the set is similar to this Kingler set. You get one boost and you pick which one would best benefit you against the opposing team.

If having both is deemed un-diable, then I'll happily fix it, but to clarify, getting both moves off isn't the objective.

@ShinyAzelf:
Your input was very similar to TheFemaleTyrogue's, so... yeah.

Hmm, all right then. Keep it I suppose, but I think you should mention that Frillish also completely walls that set, so teammates should include Pokemon who can defeat Frillish, Ferroseed, and to a lesser extent, Slowpoke.

Otherwise, it look's good.

Once done...

QC Approved: 1/2

I'll keep it for now, but see what other QC members/forum-goers say.

Thank you!

edit: the changes have been made

Okay so I get what you said as it is similar to Kingler set, maybe slash Agility with Swords Dance and then make it so that the user decides what they deem is more useful in accordance to their team. Keeping your option of taking up two moveslots may become in many situations useful for selecting in acvordance to the opponents team in battle but freeing that extra moveslot may also be useful. Heres what you couldmake it look like:

move 1: Agility / Swords Dance
move 2: X-Scissor / Brick Break
move 3: Crabhammer
move 4: Return

BB hits Normal-types such as Munchlax hard
X-Scissor for Grass and Dark Types

That is just an option and if you think about using it I'd wait for some feedback. If not just AC mention this.

^^^ I'm thinking AC for that. Like you said, the extra moveslot would come in handy and it definitely deserves a mention, but it would suck to find yourself in need of the boosting move that you didn't choose.

probably a good idea to mention or slash sheer force on the boosting sweeper set since sheer force boosts crabhammer i believe, and no murkrow means hyper cutter isn't as essential.
