Wooper (Analysis)

Hello C&C, here is my first 5th generation LC analysis, so go easy! Anyways, after writing 15 analyses for 4th gen LC, I've decided to take a break with them, and come here to write a 5th gen one! Also, don't criticize about how I already have the whole analysis written up, because I'm just used to doing that, and have been doing so ever since my first LC analysis. Without further ado, here is Wooper!

http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/194.shtml

[Overview]

At first glance, Wooper may seem like a sitting duck; assumptions may be that it’s cute, but pathetically weak. Unfortunately for those who think that, Wooper is far from useless. It can serve as a utility Pokemon, helping check certain dangerous threats such as Scraggy, and other Fighting- and Ground-type Pokemon, thanks to its high HP and decent Defense stat, which can be further boosted by Eviolite. Wooper also sports immunities to Electric- and Water-type moves (with Water Absorb), further enhancing its ability to switch in comfortably. Overall, Wooper should not be underestimated, because when given the correct support, it will not be easy to knock out.

[SET]
name: Tank
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Waterfall / Ice Punch / Encore
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Recover
item: Eviolite
ability: Unaware / Water Absorb
nature: Impish
evs: 236 HP / 76 Atk / 156 Def

[SET COMMENTS]

Wooper is a great utility counter to many Pokemon, being able to stall large threats out with a combination of its moves and stats. Earthquake offers STAB, and is a relatively powerful attack. Waterfall provides secondary STAB, and is useful against Pokemon who resist Ground-type attacks. Ice Punch offers great coverage alongside Earthquake, hitting Gligar and other Flying-type Pokemon for super effective damage, but cannot be used with Unaware. Encore allows Wooper to lock an opponent into a move, easing prediction, and often allowing a teammate to set up if the opponent does not switch on the same turn. Toxic is a great move, and can be used to stall opposing Pokemon out in tangent with Recover.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Unaware is the preferred ability, and it is most useful for countering set-up sweepers. However, Water Absorb is also useful, as replenishing a quarter of Wooper's health whenever it switches into a Water-type move is really quite nifty. Note that Ice Punch is illegal with Unaware because Ice Punch is a 4th generation move tutor move, and Unaware can only be obtained via Dream World, meaning Wooper must use Waterfall if Unaware if used. With Eviolite, Wooper turns into a sturdy physical tank, though its Special Defense stat is not that high, even with the boost from Eviolite. Therefore, Wooper should try to stave away from special attacks as much as possible. An Impish nature allows Wooper to take as many physical hits as possible, and the EV spread maximizes Wooper’s HP stat, increases its Attack by one point, and boosts its Defense stat by two points.

Bronzor is the greatest teammate to Wooper, being able to set up Stealth Rock, as well as having great synergy with it. Opposing Bronzor are a nightmare for Wooper, being immune to Earthquake, Toxic, and resisting Ice Punch, while not taking much from even Waterfall. Therefore, Magnemite makes a great teammate; having access to Magnet Pull allows it to come in on Bronzor, trap it, and take it out with Thunderbolt in a most efficient manner. Magnemite is also relatively slow, so it can also function well under Trick Room. Pawniard does well against Grass-type Pokemon who cause Wooper trouble, as its Steel typing allows it to switch in on Grass-type attacks, and threaten them with its own powerful STAB attacks.

[Other Options]

Yawn is a good option if you want Wooper to force switches, but should only be used with both Stealth Rock and Spikes support. Haze is a decent option for erasing stat boosts on the likes of Swords Dance Gligar when using Water Absorb. Scald is an option, allowing Wooper to burn potential threats, but the burn rate is not very reliable, and it's not very strong either, due to it coming off of Wooper's low Special Attack stat. Finally, Curse and Stockpile in tangent with Counter are good options, allowing Wooper to boost its Defense to high levels and reflect any weak physical attack for double the damage. Curse should be used if Wooper is more offensively-orientated, while Stockpile should be used if Wooper’s main objective is to tank as many hits as possible.

[Checks and Counters]

Grass-type Pokemon can easily switch in on either of Wooper’s STAB attacks, take little damage, and retaliate with a powerful STAB attack of their own. A great example is Ferroseed, who can take any hits with relative ease, is immune to Toxic, and can set up entry hazards before finishing Wooper off with Bullet Seed. Other Grass-type Pokemon perform similarly. However, unlike Ferroseed, most Grass-types are weak to Ice and when played correctly, an Ice Punch coming from Wooper can hurt. Bronzor is a great counter, also being immune to Toxic like Ferroseed, boasting great defenses, and easily switching in and tanking any hits Wooper throws at it. However, Bronzor cannot do much to Wooper either, unless Wooper does not carry Recover, or Bronzor has Toxic. Frillish does not take a lot of damage from Earthquake, can burn Wooper with Will-O-Wisp, and can replenish its health with Recover.

Waterfall provides secondary STAB, and when paired with Return, hits every Pokemon in the tier for at least neutral damage.
Tesshido.

Mention Encore somewhere please :o.

Also can you provide any significant damage calcs for the Trick Room Sweeper with Evolution Stone? It just seems like it wouldn't hit hard enough at all and it would waste valuable Trick Room turns, basically just being a weaker Utility Set without Toxic. Wooper is already frail and weak, so the LO Trick Room Sweeper already looks very iffy. I just don't see why I would use this over something like Tranpinch who boasts more than double the attack base power, even lower speed, and about the same defenses (better SpD) or even Gible who has awesome coverage and such. They can also actually touch Tesshido. Recover just wouldn't be great at all on the LO version either considering how frail it is, so it doesn't even have that over those two.

I think your selling the usefulness of the Unaware ability too short. Due to the majority of teams having at least one set up sweeper, and with pokemon such as Scraggy (change it to that name as well, you have it as its Japanese name atm) being so prevalent and having so few counters after a DD (a lot of teams devoting a team slot just for Scraggy), I would argue it even being the best option. What team wouldn't like an anti-sweep insurance Pokemon? Most Water-Types destroy Wooper anyway on account of most of them attacking on the special side, so I don't really see who you miss out on beating, just it being a little harder to switch in as well. At the very least slash Unaware on the Utility Set and since Wooper only gets Ice Punch from a move tutor in gen 3/4 (I could be wrong), slash Waterfall / Aqua Tail over Ice Punch.

pururiru (or whatever it's called) does a good job at beating the TR sweeper with Will-o-Wisp and Recover. (essentially in-depth version of Tomahawks post). Munchlax is a good teammate cuz of Pursuit but needs to watch for WoW. Houndour is in the same boat, but with more speed and an unfortunate weakness to boil over.

Thanks for the input guys! Here are all the changes I've made:

- Took out the entire Trick Room Sweeper set
- Changed Zuruguu > Scraggy
- Slashed Unaware as first ability on Utility set
- Slashed Waterfall and Encore on Utility set
- Listed in AC that Unaware can't go with Ice Punch
- Pointed out that Waterfall + Return hits everything for neutral BAR Ferroseed and Pururiru

Thank you!

Oran berry shouldn't be slashed with Evolution Stone as with 55/45/25 defenses it's not going to be able to take any hits well, and pretty much needs the Evolution Stone boosts. It has Recover anyway, which is far more useful paired with Evolution Stone considering Oran Berry's one-time use. Unless it survives and beats anything significant that is, though I can't really see any worthwhile.

Since you're using Unaware as the main ability, maybe clean up bits about things being able to set up in Wynaut's face, and take out the last sentence in the Dream World section.

Also, I don't mean to sound negative, but your making Wooper sound like some kind of wall of china pokemon when he really is far from it in my opinion. Wooper is one of those niche pokemon, countering things like Scraggy, Physical Fighting- and Fire-types, etc., things like that. It's important to remember that 55/45/25 defenses are pretty below average, if not horrible, for a defensive pokemon, so I think you should tone it down a bit. For example, there are pretty much no special attacks Wooper can take "reasonably well" even with Evolution Stone. People are going to wonder why they should even bother using Wooper when things like Gligar seem like they can do basically the same set with roughly the same typing, but double the stats. Stress that it is able to check specific, but powerful and common threats (like the few mentioned above), and the usefulness of Unaware / Recover (or even Water Absorb) which set it apart from its fellow Ground-types, despite its low stats.

Shikijika makes a great partner for Wooper. With Herbivore and all.

Wooper may get OHKOed by the opposing Pokemon after the stat boost before it has a chance to use Haze.
No?

Also, is it worth putting some evs in SpD? Sure, 25 SpD sucks terribly, but with Evo-stone and investment, it might turn out ok?

Also, slash Encore with Toxic. Especially if you have Tspikes, Encore and two attacking moves is quite viable.

Unaware is the preferred ability, allowing Wooper to counter set up sweepers extremely well with a combination of it's its moves and stats. [Dream World]

Wooper gets Unaware in Dream World, which is quite a decent ability. With Unaware, it can easily switch in on a set up sweeper such as Swords Dance Gligar, easily tank the hits, and strike back with Ice Punch. Unaware combined with Recover, makes Wooper one of the best counters to any set up sweeper. For example, with Unaware, Scraggy cannot do anything to Wooper as a Drain Punch will only be a 3HKO, while Wooper has access to Recover, and can also slowly whittle down its health with Earthquake. If Scraggy does not have Shed Skin, then Wooper can easily stall it out. Since set up sweepers are extremely common in the metagame, Wooper will almost always benefit from Unaware.
