Wailmer (Analysis) [QC 2/2]

Here is Wailmer! I didn't add a Dream World section because it's DW ability (Pressure) has already been released.

[OVERVIEW]

- One of few users who has access to Water Spout in Little Cup
- Good Special Attack, above average Speed
- Very large HP, but Defenses are mediocre
- Good coverage
- Can go offensive, or defensive
- Overall a potent threat

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Water Spout
move 2: Hydro Pump / Surf
move 3: Ice Beam
move 4: Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Electric
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Water Veil
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 36 HP / 76 Def / 200 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
- Water Spout is its strongest attack when at full health, should be used early game to hurt opposing Pokemon
- Hydro Pump is also powerful, and should be used when Wailmer’s health starts dropping low
- Surf is an alternative, trading power for accuracy
- Ice Beam offers good coverage with Water-, hitting Dragon- and Grass-types
- Hidden Power Grass for Chinchou and opposing Water-types
- Hidden Power Electric and hits Mantyke

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
- Rapid Spinners are very important
- Sandshrew is the best option, being immune to Electric- can Rapid Spin and set up Stealth Rock, though both are weak to Grass-
- Magnemite traps Ferroseed
- Water Veil is used because it allows Wailmer to switch into Will-O-Wisp, and while is mostly useless outside of it, will be more helpful than other abilities
- Timid allows you outspeed all Scarfed Pokemon who has 15 Speed, and everything below that
- Modest hits 22 Speed, still outspeeding all non-Choice Scarfed Pokemon, and the slower Choice Scarfed Pokemon, but ties with Scraggy after a Dragon Dance, preventing Wailmer from checking it
- EV spread maximizes Special Attack and Speed, and boosts HP and Defense by a point
- Hazards are extremely important
- Wailmer can force switches, and not many Pokemon like switching into entry hazards + Water Spout
- Rain is helpful, boosting Water Spout even further
- Bronzor can provide Rain (and Trick Room)
- Sandshrew can provide Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin support
- Ferroseed provides Spikes
- Hidden Power Fire defeats Ferroseed and Snover

[Other Options]
- Pressure (DW Ability) can be used, but Wailmer will have little benefits
- Tanking set could work, with Rest, Scald, Toxic, and Roar, but it doesn’t have Sleep Talk, so Rest isn’t very viable
- Yawn and Protect
- Selfdestruct
- Trick Room sweeper, Quiet nature with 0 Speed IVs
- Curse | Waterfall | Rest | Sleep Talk could work, but mono-attacker means it gets walled by many Pokemon in the tier

[Checks and Counters]

- Ferroseed can easily take hits, setting up Spikes in the process
- Snover doesn’t take much from even Ice Beam, brings in Hail which causes Wailmer to lose health, and can hit it with Giga Drain
- Wynaut revenge kills
- Frillish doesn’t take much even from Hidden Power Grass, beats Wailmer with a combination of Shadow Ball and Recover
- Mantyke can defeat Choice Scarf variant unless it has Hidden Power Electric
- Chinchou defeats variants without Hidden Power Grass
- Unaware Wooper beats Curse set with Toxic and Recover

Uh, Wailmer learns Sleep Talk from Gen 4. You can port it to Gen 5 and teach it Scald via TM.

Also, mention TR somewhere. Bronzor can do that too.

Also, Tesshiido's a cool partner, resisting both weaknesses, Tspiking for Munchlax and friends, Spiking and SRing for massive damage, etc.

Also, slash HP Grass in front of HP Electric. Hitting Chinchou is more important, because Ice Beam hits Mantyke neutral.

Mention Curse? Wailmer has equal offenses, and gets Waterfall, Earthquake, and Avalanche. And Amnesia.

Sorry to double-post, but

- Can run physically attacking set
Should prolly take that out of OC.

- Wooper has low Special Defense, but can take Water- attacks thanks to Water Absorb and Hidden Power Electric thanks to it’s Ground typing
Wooper runs Unaware now, because that's really the only reason you'd ever use Wooper, and anyway, HP Grass is slashed as the first option now.

[Optional Changes]
- Pressure (DW Ability) can be used, but Wailmer will have little benefits
- Tanking set could work, with Rest, Scald, Toxic, and Roar, but it doesn’t have Sleep Talk, so Rest isn’t very viable
- Can run physically attacking set
- Toxic
- Yawn and Protect
- Selfdestruct
- Trick Room sweeper, Quiet nature with 0 Speed IVs
redundant

err... I think that the Rest set should have 36 / 196 / 236 EVs for more SpD. I don't think wailmer would need the extra point in HP.

I think Modest should be the first slash on the Scarf set because Wailmer hits 15 with a modest nature. There isn't much else that you are outspeeding with the extra point and the added power is appreciated.

@Mooo the ability to tie with Zuruggu after a DD is pretty cool. You also want to tie with Mangemite @ Scarf (Water Spout OHKOs) and some other stuff (Rock Polish Onix I think?). Although you don't get a jump point from scarf max speed is pretty cool.

edit: why not just merge RestTalk and Curse? It can't really make use of the coverage and it needs recovery.

@ comatthew6: Done.

@ Mooo: Timid will stay as the first slash because of it's ability to check Scraggy.

@ -Charmander-: Okay, I've merged the two together into a Mono-attacker.

Thanks!

EDIT:

Done, thanks Darkamber8828.

Doesn't that mean you have to re-add Toxic and Scald to OC?

EDIT: actually
- Tanking set could work, with Rest, Scald, Toxic, and Roar, but it doesn’t have Sleep Talk, so Rest isn’t very viable
You should probably do something with that

Alright, Timid it is :p

Btw I'm a little unsure about the Curse Talk set. With only a water attack, a lot of Pokemon can shut it down completely. I think you should mention a poke like with powerful super effective attacks against waters in team options so you arent walled by water absorb pokes like pururiru. Magnemite for example. Also, maybe a croagunk counter because gunky beats Wailmer a lot of the time :(

Updated with new format.

Also removed Mono-attacker set and left that to Other Options, because Mooo is right, it gets walled by a lot of things such as Frillish.

Frillish > Pururiru in the Checks and counters section, everything else Jap > English seems to be done. So good job.

Not really the something I had in mind...
