Corphish

Water Type

[Overview]

Corphish the crayfish has gotten some nice new additions from Black and White, the most notable being Adaptability. Doubling STAB along with Corphish's large Attack and decent bulk creates a number of good sets to go with your team. With access to useful moves such as Dragon Dance, Corphish can be a nice bulky sweeper when paired with an Eviolite. Allowing this little guy to set up even one Dragon Dance is going to make it hard to wall. Having Hyper Cutter as an ability means Corphish can't be stopped by Murkrow that carry FeatherDance. A drawback to Corphish, however, is that unlike many Water-types, it doesn't get a decent Speed stat. Corphish is arguably outclassed by Krabby when not running a Dragon Dance set.

[SET]
name: Bulky Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Waterfall
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Brick Break
item: Eviolite
ability: Adaptability
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 172 HP / 76 Def / 156 SpD / 76 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Corphish has the moves and the stats to run a good bulky sweeping set. With access to Dragon Dance, it has the ability to invest more EVs into bulk while it raises its offensive stats. Carrying Waterfall is great as with Adaptability, because Corphish's STAB modifier becomes 2x, allowing it to hit quite hard. Crunch is useful for hitting Ghost-types such as Frillish, who walls both of Corphish's other attacks. Brick Break is for taking care of Munchlax and Carvanha.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Eviolite is essential on this set; without it, Corphish will be hard pressed to set up Dragon Dances and sweep. A Jolly nature is preferred for the extra Speed, as after a Dragon Dance, Corphish's Attack will be high regardless of being unboosted by nature. This set is designed to take enough hits to get off at least 2 Dragon Dances, hence the lack of Attack EVs. After its first Dragon Dance, Corphish hits 16 Speed, and after the second, it will have 21, outspeeding all unboosted Pokemon in the tier.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Brick Break / X-Scissor
move 4: Return
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Adaptability
nature: Jolly
evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Running a Choice Scarf set allows Corphish to make up for its lack of Speed. Corphish's great coverage allows it to easily run a choice set. Waterfall is for taking out those pesky Fire-types that may threaten your team. Crunch allows it to hit Ghost-types such as Misdreavus and Gastly. Brick Break is great for covering Dark-types such as Scraggy and Carvanha. Return is for the high damage and admirable neutral coverage. X-Scissor hits and Grass-types hard and will hit Dark-types harder than Brick Break.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

With a Choice Scarf, there are a few drawbacks. Losing the ability to switch between attacks inevitably makes it setup bait for various users of Spikes like Ferroseed as well as setup sweepers like Scraggy. Using Return/Brick Break will coax out Frillish and Misdreavus. Crunch will draw out Dark-types such as Murkrow. When in doubt, Waterfall is likely your best option, gaining adaptability STAB, having good neutral coverage, and having few immune enemies. With a Choice Scarf, Corphish will hit 21 Speed, outspeeding every non-scarfed Pokemon.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Waterfall / Crabhammer
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Brick Break
item: Oran Berry
ability: Adaptability
nature: Jolly
evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Swords Dance is one of the few things Corphish does better than Krabby this generation. With Adaptability, Waterfall gets a larger STAB boost and gives you the potential to do some pretty nice damage. Carrying Crunch and Brick Break provides great coverage on every type. Crabhammer is an alternative if you prefer power over accuracy.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Oran Berry is for bringing Corphish's health back up after that Swords Dance. Jollyallows it to hit 14 Speed. Corphish will have to watch out for Will-o-Wisp and Thunder Wave.

[Other Options]

One could theoretically run a Hone Claws + Crabhammer set to increase the accuracy of the move and make Corphish hit harder, but a Swords Dance-boosted Waterfall will hit harder than a Hone Claws-boosted Crabhammer, making the set largely inferior. If you wish to run a more offensive spread, you can use 236 Atk / 236 Speed with a Jolly nature, Life Orb (0 HP IV's to make Life Orb recoil 1 HP) and Adaptability.

[Checks and Counters]

Counters for Corphish are common, but it will still be hard for them to do the job taking its bulk into account. Corphish's best teammates are also its greatest enemies. Anything that has high Special Attack and access to moves like Thunderbolt such as Misdreavus or Magnemite will do the job. Grass-types such as Bulbasaur or Ferroseed have super effective STAB moves and will wall it with ease. Frillish will switch in on many variants of Corphish, gladly welcoming a Water Absorb boost. Mischievous Heart Murkrow with FeatherDance does a number to the Dragon Dance set. With Priority from its ability, it will completely sidestep the Dragon Dance Speed Boosts and drop Corphish's Attack with FeatherDance, making it unable to set up effectively.

Corphish is a crayfish, not a crab, off the bat.

Secondly, with the second choice scarf set, Corphish hits 18 base speed, which is pretty paltry, not really good enough for sweeping or even for decent revenge. Hell, Magby can outspeed that. I'm not sure it's good enough to warrant a set, really.

Your right, hmm lemme change some Evs

Edit: K now you hit 21 Speed with a scarf you outspeed all non scarfs

[SET]
name: Bulky Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Waterfall / Crabhammer
move 3: Return / Body Slam
move 4: Crunch / Knock Off
item: Evolution Stone
ability: Adaptability
nature: Adamant
evs: 76 Def / 156 SpD / 236 Spe

I'd like to see it ordered

-DD
-Waterfall
-Crunch
-Brick Break

Crabhammer is far worse than Waterfall. Perfect accuracy is far more useful than extra power, and is one of the main points Corphish has over Krabby. It can go in OC, but really, unless it OHKOs/2HKOs something important, Waterfall is heaps, heaps than Crabhammer.

Crunch is for Pururiru, Brick Break for Tesshiido. Between them, only Croagunk resists the combination, and is nearly nonexistant due to being outclassed by Meditite.

Body Slam is in the same boat as Return, walled by Pururiru and Tesshiido, except it's a shitty move instead of a good one. Killing things is more important than paralyzing them when you're a DDer.

...or knocking off items. Seriously, what?

Mention Body Slam and Knock Off in OC.

Above poster, Corphish reaches 21 speed with a scarf.

Also, where's Swords Dance? Corphish does it better than Krabby with Adaptability and Crunch and Waterfall.

Okay
...or knocking off items. Seriously, what?
Sorry i had a dumb moment.

Mention Body Slam and Knock Off in OC.

Meant with a scarf added if that makes any sense, I guess it didnt. I made myself more clear.

Also, where's Swords Dance? Corphish does it better than Krabby with Adaptability and Crunch and Waterfall.
Ill add it

evs: 76 Def / 156 SpD / 236 Spe

What's with this? "always max hp before investing in defenses"

There's also no point in running max speed with Adamant, as it doesn't reach 21. Run Jolly or drop some speed to put into bulk.

Also, talk about a more offensive set with LO and max attack/speed jolly.

The Bulky Dragon Dance set needs a Jolly nature.

The Choice Scarf set needs 236 Speed EVs.

With those changes, they both hit 21 Speed (DD set hits 21 after one DD), which is really important, as you outspeed all non-Choice Scarfed users.

Remove Knock Off on the Bulky Dragon Dance set. Corphish is meant to sweep, not to support it's teammates by knocking off items. Knock Off isn't that powerful even after Attack boosts anyways.

Mention something to switch in to Frillish (Pururiru)'s Will-O-Wisp. Maybe a status absorber such as Shed Skin Scraggy?

Mention an offensive EV spread for Dragon Dance Corphish in Additional Comments.

Once done, let me know and I will stamp this.

i havent gotten to editing that set yet but I planned to change it to Jolly

Ill add into OC

You can still leave Crabhammer slashed in the Dragon Dance set, it still is an alternative afterall, and some people do in fact value the extra power at the cost of some accuracy.

Also as pointed out, always go to Hp before defenses.

My main concern is the way you're running that spread altogether, seeing as you're running bulk and an evolution stone, you're implying that you're shooting for multiple boosts if possible, so running max speed on such a bulky set is redundant, especially as even with no speed investment, 2 Dragon Dances will let you outpace the metagame regardless of whether or not you're running speed. It's understandable if you want to run some form of speed to hit certain benchmarks, but outrunning anything and hitting something without a boost and no attack investment is a waste.

I basically drug out something that should have been left as a statement, but hopefully the point is across.

Since he's aiming for multiple boosts, reliability>power, like Dragon Claw<Outrage on Bulky DD nite and Hydro Pump<Surf on Crocune.

If you can find something good Crabhammer does that Waterfall doesn't...but in the vast majority of situations...

Allright so I think I covered everyones pount. I put Crabhammer slashed into the SD set as like Zeph said, more people might want the power. Taking in what Darkamber said about reliability I left Waterfall as the only option in the D dance set. If I missed any points, notify me.

EDIT: Question: Seeing as EVo Stone increases DEf+SpD by 50%, If i have a number like 13 for defense, would it be rounded up or down? Just a question that might spare me some EV's

Bulky DD: mention what speed you hit at +1 and +2

Choice Scarf: mention what speed you hit. Why X-Scissor on the set?

Team Options: Vulpix as a teammate? Sun kinda decreases your water attacks. If you want a Fire type use Growlithe or Houndour.

Counters: seem fine

Hits Grass-Types

Doesnt have to have Drought, but I changed him for Growlithe anyways

It doesn't mention that x-scissor is used to hit grass-types. I was saying maybe add it in.

There is the choice to run a Hone Claws + Crabhammer set to increase the accuracy of the move and making Corphish hit harder, but a Swords Dance-boosted Waterfall will hit harder than a Hone Claws-boosted Crabhammer. If you wish to run a more offensive spread, you can use 236 Atk / 236 Speed with a Jolly nature, Life Orb (0 HP IV's to make Life Orb recoil 1 HP) and use Adaptability.

[Checks and Counters]

Counters for Corphish are common, but it will still be hard for them to do the job taking its bulk into account its bulk. Corphish's best teammates are also its greatest best enemies. With Priority from its ability, raising Corphish's Speed won't affect it much it will completely sidestep the Dragon Dance Speed Boosts and drop its Attack with FeatherDance lowers its Attack harshly, making it unable to set up effectively on Murkrow.

[Overview]

Corphish the crayfish has gotten some nice new additions from Black and White, the most notable being Adaptability. Doubling STAB along with Corphish's large Attack and decent bulk creates a number of useful sets to go with your team. With access to useful moves such as Dragon Dance, it can potentially create a nice bulky sweeper when paired with an Evolution Stone. Allowing this little guy to set up even one Dragon Dance is going to make him hard to wall. Having Hyper Cutter as an ability means Corphish can't be stopped by Murkrow who carry FeatherDance. A drawback to Corphish, however, is that unlike many Water-types, it doesn't get a decent Speed stat. Corphish is arguably outclassed by Krabby when not running a Dragon Dance set.

[SET]
name: Bulky Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Waterfall
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Brick Break
item: Evolution Stone
ability: Adaptability
nature: Adamant
evs: 172 HP / 76 Def / 156 SpD / 76 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Corphish has the moves and the stats to run a good bulky sweeping set. With access to Dragon Dance, it has the ability to invest more EVs into bulk while it raises its offensive stats. Carrying Waterfall is great as with Adaptability, Corphish's STAB modifier becomes 2x, allowing it to hit extra hard. Crunch is useful for hitting Ghost-types such as Frillish which will wall both of its other attacks. Brick Break is for taking care of Frillish and Carvanha.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Evolution Stone is essential on this set; without it, Corphish won't have as high of a chance will be hard pressed to set up your Dragon Dances and proceed to sweep the rest of their team. A Jolly nature is preferred for the extra Speed, and after a Dragon Dance, Corphish's Attack will be high regardless. This set is designed to take enough hits to get off at least 2 Dragon Dances, hence the lack of Speed (GP note: what? it has Speed EVs) Attack EVs. After its first Dragon Dance, Corphish hits 16 Speed, and after the second, it will have 21, outspeeding all unboosted Pokemon in the tier.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Brick Break / X-Scissor
move 4: Return
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Adaptability
nature: Jolly
evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Running a Choice Scarf set is good because it allows Corphish to make up for its lack of Speed. Having great coverage allows Corphish to easily run a choice set.

With a Choice Scarf, there are a few drawbacks, one being Corphish will lose the ability to switch attacks, making it. Losing the ability to switch between attacks inevitably makes it setup bait for various users of Spikes like Ferroseed and as well as setup sweepers, such as Ferroseed and like Scraggy, respectively. Using Return/Brick Break will coax out Pururiru and Misdreavus. Crunch will draw out Dark-types such as Murkrow. If anything, Corphish's best bet is Waterfall as you get Adaptability STAB and not many things can counter it When in doubt, Waterfall is likely your best option, gaining adaptability STAB, having good neutral coverage, and having few immune enemies. With a Choice Scarf, it will hit 21 Speed allowing, Corphish to outspeed every non-scarfed Pokemon.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance

move 2: Waterfall / Crabhammer
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Brick Break
item: Oran Berry
ability: Adaptability
nature: Jolly
evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Swords Dance is one of the few things Corphish does better than Krabby this generation. With Adaptability, Waterfall gets a larger STAB boost and gives you the potential to do some pretty nice damage. Carrying Crunch and Brick Break provides great coverage on every type. Crabhammer is an alternative if you prefer power over accuracy.
