Hello everyone! This team, A Shocking Turn of Events was a team that i built with my tutor, Metalsonic. It has been very successful with both my tutor and myself. The goal of the team is the same as any other Volt-Turn team; to weaken the opposing team to such a degree that a late game sweeper can do its job with ease. In this case, the late game sweeper is Godzilla Mega Tyranitar. Now, onto the team-building process!
248.png

Firstly in the teambuilding process, my tutor asked me to choose a Mega pokemon. I chose Mega Tyranitar because it was extremely powerful, and a deadly sweeper. It was great because it could set up Dragon Dance and KO the remaining team once its counters are dead. It would also fit very well on a Volt Turn team, as I can soften up the opponents using my other Volt Turn members, then sweep easily with Tyranitar.

Next, I had to choose a teammate. Choice Band Talonflame came to mind, as it had U-Turn, a powerful Wallbreaker, great Flying-type priority in Brave Bird and 120 Base Power. It was able to easily sweep whole teams once it has been weakened in end game. It made a great partner for Tyranitar, as it can take Fighting-type, Ground-type and Grass-type attacks for it, while Tyranitar can setup on the Rock-type attacks and other weaker special attacks like Thunderbolt or Draco Meteor that threaten frail Talonflame, thanks to its massive Special Defense and the 1.5x boost in Sandstorm.

However, the team had a water weakness, so the most obvious VoltTurn teammate came to mind: Rotom-W. It was a great Pinsir counter, and a great pokemon in general with its typing only having one weakness, lots of resists, and great in the metagame in general..

Next, was that I had to get a Defog or Rapid Spin support for Talonflame. We had to think of one with Volt Switch or U-turn. We came up with Zapdos, with useful access to Uturn AND Volt Switch, and it was a great pokemon in the metagame, with great bulk, a wonderful Pinsir counter, and great for gaining momentum against stuff that would like to switch in on it.

Now, we had to think of another wallbreaker to support Tyranitar, since almost our whole team had Volt Turn now. We could Volt Turn to a wallbreaker easily and deal massive damage to the opponent. According to the Tyranitar analysis, Keldeo was a recommended wallbreaker as it is able to defeat Tyranitar's checks, for example Landorus-T, Excadrill, Heatran, and more. So, we decided to use Specs Keldeo in order to punch holes in the opponent's team and supported by Volt Turn.

Finally, we needed a Stealth Rock setter. Landorus-T quickly came to mind: it was bulky, had U-turn, Intimidate, and was great in the metagame thanks to its wonderful typing. It could take Ground-type and Fighting-type attacks for Tyranitar, yet was not weak to Stealth Rock, unlike Talonflame or Zapdos. The two lone weaknesses it has, Water and Ice, are boldly handled by Rotom-W and Keldeo, and even Tyranitar's boosted Special Defense in sand can take a few hits as well!

An Thus, A Shocking Turn of Events was born!

A Closer Look

Roast Chicken (Talonflame) @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- U-turn
- Flare Blitz
- Sleep Talk

Talonflame usually starts out as the lead and begins the Volt-Turn chain. Choice Banded Talonflame is a great wallbreaker and can dent things like Landorus-T to help Tyranitar late game sweep. With priority Brave Bird, it functions as a great revenge killer and can also function as the second win condition to clean up the opponent. Talonflame also helps by dealing with Brelooom, Conkeldor and Scizor for Tyranitar, 3 huge threats that can stop it sweeping. In combination with this, it also has a great amount of synergy with Tyranitar, taking Bug, Steel, Fighting and Ground-Type moves for it. Sleep Talk is used in the last slot for it to better deal with Breloom and Sleep Powder Venusaur, which Talonflame can swiftly deal with its super effective Brave Birds. In combination with Keldeo, Talonflame forms a wall-breaking core for the team.

Grilled Chicken (Zapdos) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 68 SAtk / 20 Spd
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn

Every Volt-Turn team needs a Defog user, and this team is no exception; especially since this team has Talonflame. Zapdos is an excellent choice, having access to U-Turn and Volt Switch, along with Defog; U-turn is used instead of Volt Switch as Volt Switch won't work against Ground-types which Zapdos is unable to deal with.. It also is a great check to Flying-spam, in-particular Mega Pinsir. Thunderbolt is the only move for Zapdos to deal solid damage, and hits decently hard. Roost allows it to check physical attackers, and some special attackers such as Rotom-W; while also giving it the ever-needed recovery option. U-Turn is used to give the team a more guaranteed chance of gaining momentum when predicting a switch in. The EVs are taken from the analysis as a physically defensive set. Zapdos is a great slow pivot thanks to its set of resistances, often coming in on Pokemon such as a Breloom, Excadrill, and Venusaur, then either clearing Stealth Rock before U-Turning, or U-Turning straight away to Talonflame so Talonflame doesn't have to take damage.

Afro Circus (Keldeo-Resolute) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Secret Sword
- Scald
- Icy Wind

Keldeo functions as the special wallbreaker, and breaks walls in combination with Talonflame. Due to Keldeo being relatively frail, it appreciates being surrounded by a Volt Turn chain, giving it many chances to switch in safely. Choice Specs gives it that extra burst of power, allowing it to dent things much harder and score 2HKOs it wouldn't get with something such as a Life Orb. Hydro Pump is Keldeo's m ain wallbreaking tool, and is used more than scald. Scald, or the other hand, is great for picking off weakened Pokemon, without worrying about Hydro Pumps accuracy. Additionally, Scald can be used on a predicted switch in to cripple the opponent with a burn. Secret Sword gives it dual-stab, and allows it to take out special walls that don't resist it such as Chansey and Goodra, while leaving things like Sylveon for Talonflame. Icy Wind hits Latios and Venusaur before it mega evolves, and also has the nifty secondary effect of lowering speed.

Rawr (Landorus-Therian) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Knock Off

Since Volt-Turn teams force switches, a Stealth Rock user is very useful to inflict hazards damage onto the opponent and soften them up for a possible OHKO. Landorus-T was the best choice, serving as a great physical wall, having access to U-Turn and also having great synergy with the rest of the team. The EVs maximise physical bulk, allowing it to stop sweepers such as Mega Charizard X, Mega Mawile, and even Bisharp without fear. Knock Off is used for its great secondary effect, removing items from threats such Leftovers and Eviolite. Landorus-T is also a great pivot to Zapdos, lowing the attack of an attacker so Zapdos gets a chance to use Defog.

Laundromat (Rotom-Wash) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 232 HP / 56 SAtk / 220 Spd
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Discharge
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Rotom-W is an excellent partner to Landorus-T, and Is great on Volt-Turn teams, thanks to its great set of resistances -- only one Grass weakness but multiple resistances to common types like Water, Ice, Steel and Flying, and immunity to Ground for synergy with Tyranitar. This Rotom-W uses the Assault Vest, and while it is not used often, it still is a great choice thanks to Rotom-W's bulk combined with its high special attack. Assault Vest allows it to tank multiple hits, while still dealing a decent amount of damage with its high Special Attack. The Speed Evs allow it to outspeed stuff like min Speed Heatran. Discharge is used as a solid Electric-type damage output, and is used over Thunderbolt because of its 30% Paralysis chance. Hidden Power Grass is used to hit Quagsire and Gastrodon, which would otherwise wall it.

Godzilla (Tyranitar) @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch

Tyranitar is the Star Of The Show. Tyranitar is an excellent late game sweeper thanks to its high attack, bulk, and access to one off the best boosting moves in the game, Dragon Dance. Tyranitar's sweeping capability is further enhanced after Volt-Turn has worn down the opposing tea, allowing it to clean late game. However, Tyranitar must always be saved its health for sweeping, unless of course it needs to switch in, such as against a Charizard Y or Latios. A Jolly nature is used since Tyranitar, while a great sweeper, is pretty slow. In fact, an Adamant nature will cause it to be outsped by several Choice Scarf users which is very problematic. Earthquake is used for coverage, and gives it the common Edge-Quake coverage. Ice Punch rounds off Edge-quake, hitting major defensive threats Chesnaught, Gliscor and Landorus-T which would otherwise wall it. Tyanitar also works well with Rotom-W and Talonflame to take out stuff like Slowbro, Ferrothorn, Breloom and Chesnaught so it can sweep. Tyranitar is the main win-condition of the team, and is the MVP of the team in many games.

Threats
Latios -
Latios's Draco Meteors are extreemly powerful, and without a special wall, can be a huge threat. The only way to deal with it is to switch to Tyranitar and try to Dragon Dance.
Clefable - Physically Defencive Calm Mind Clefable can be pretty annyoing since i dont have a powerfull physical wallbreaker. +1 T-tar can deal with it, and talonflame aswell to an extent

Thanks for reading, i'd love to hear your suggestions!

1. Tiny thing, but Zapdos only needs 20 Speed EV's. You have 24. Move it to defense. I know it doesn't make that much of a difference, but it's still ideal.
2. Also minor thing, but put 0 Attack EV's on Rotom-W, Keldeo, and Zapdos. This minimizes Foul Play and Confusion damage. Again, it may not seem huge, but it's still ideal.
3. Use Hidden Power Flying instead of Icy Wind on Keldeo. This may be a bit controversial, but from my experience it's always better. The reason Icy Wind is used is Latios + Latias, and you already have Ttar to beat them. I guess the same could be said about Venusaur and Talonflame, but ehh. Hydro Pumps wear Latios down faster than they do Venusaur.

4. There are certainly two major thorns in your side; Clefable + Latios. The way I see it, you're team would greatly appreciate a Steel-type. They wall Clefable, wall most Latios, and can hit Clefable super effectively. Assault Vest Bisharp would greatly improve this team: it walls Latios and can Pursuit it, and can hit Clefable wicked hard. The problem is trying to fit it onto your team. The thing is, you have 3 physical walls and 0 special walls, so I think one should go. Zapdos has Defog and Lando has rocks, so clearly weakest link is AV Rotom-W (which is a weird set in and of itself). A Rotom without WoW seems like a waste to me, and I would seriously consider changing it to Bisharp. You could also change Ttar to Mega Mawile, but then you lose Speed. Plus I'm getting the hint that you want to keep Ttar.

5. If you do this, it will unfortunately open up more problems. You'd only have one all out special attacker, as opposed to three physical ones. In the end, it's your team, and you can decide what to do with. However, I do feel like adding a Steel-type would make it infinitely better.

Good luck!

1. Nice Catch, Thanks!
2. Forgot about that
3. Latios is more of a problem than mega vensaur, and getting latios to low HP is very good for the team.
4. Rotom-W is my only volt-switcher, thundurus check and greninja check. By adding bisharp I lose a volt-switcher, but I shall test and see. (I become extremely prone to water types though) to get rid of Clefable involves something sacrificing itself, to get clefable to around. 50% HP before talonflame me can kill it.
5. Thanks!
