[OVERVIEW]

Amoonguss is one of the best supporting Pokemon in Doubles, with the ability to control momentum through redirection and immobilization tactics. Access to Rage Powder lets Amoonguss redirect dangerous attacks away from its partner, and with the help of Regenerator and its great defenses, Amoonguss can afford to take lots of hits. In addition to this, Amoonguss has great defensive typing, resisting common attacking types like Water, Fighting, Electric, and Fairy, which allows it to check big threats like Keldeo, Azumarill, Rotom-W, and Terrakion. Amoonguss is especially valuable because it works during any period of the match and is rarely dead weight. Even in the rare situation where Amoonguss isn't useful, it regains health by switching out. Thanks to Spore and its low Speed, Amoonguss works especially well both as a check to Trick Room teams and as a member of Trick Room teams, usually moving first and putting foes to sleep without the threat of Sleep Clause. Although Amoonguss has a lot going for it, it has very little offensive presence, so it needs to be partnered with an offensive Pokemon in order to do its job. Amoonguss also struggles against opposing Grass-types.

Moves
========

Rage Powder removes offensive pressure from Amoonguss's partner, allowing it to attack an opposing threat or set up without worry of taking damage. Spore puts a foe to sleep, immobilizing it and gaining momentum by reducing the two-on-two scenario to two-on-one. Giga Drain allows Amoonguss to not entirely be Taunt bait and allows it to check Pokemon such as Rotom-W, Keldeo, and Terrakion. It also restores some health, which is great for such a defensively oriented Pokemon. Protect allows Amoonguss to scout for attacks or protect itself when you predict a double target.

Set Details
========

Rocky Helmet is used in order to punish physical attackers, dealing damage with every hit. This is especially nice against Mega Kangaskhan, against which it deals twice as much damage due to Parental Bond, and Focus Sash users that make contact like Breloom, Bisharp, and Terrakion, as it breaks their Focus Sashes. A Sitrus Berry can be a useful alternative on Amoonguss, giving it more health to work with against any attack that does not outright KO it and allowing it to use Rage Powder more freely. 252 HP and 184 Defense EVs and a Relaxed nature allow Amoonguss to always survive a Jolly Mega Metagross's Zen Headbutt. The rest of the EVs are placed into Special Defense to help Amoonguss survive attacks such as a Kyurem-B's Ice Beam. A Speed-decreasing nature and a 0 Speed IV are chosen to give Amoonguss a better Trick Room matchup, and with a base Speed stat of 30 it isn't going to be outspeeding anything outside of Trick Room anyway. The same spread but with a Sassy nature over a Relaxed one is usable to grant Amoonguss the ability to survive Mega Camerupt's spread Heat Wave while still surviving Life Orb Latios's Psyshock. Amoonguss often gets low on health amidst redirection and switching into attacks for the team, but it is still able to maintain its HP thanks to Regenerator healing a third of its health when it switches out. This enables Rocky Helmet Amoonguss in particular to have reliable ways to recover health even though it lacks a Sitrus Berry.

Usage Tips
========

Using Amoonguss is fairly straightforward; use Spore against Trick Room setters that aren't immune to it, on predicted switches, and while Amoonguss's partner is protecting itself. Use Giga Drain when Amoonguss has been Taunted or when it is super effective and Amoonguss's partner isn't in danger. Use Protect against Fake Out or if the opponent is likely to double target Amoonguss and your other Pokemon can knock out one of the threats. Otherwise, use Rage Powder to redirect non-threatening moves to Amoonguss and allow its partner to move safely, whether it be setting up or attacking. Keep in mind, however, that Rage Powder and Spore do not affect Grass-types, Safety Goggles users, and Pokemon with Overcoat. Amoonguss works well throughout the match, neutralizing big threats with Spore early-game to gain momentum, aiding setup and better positioning during the mid-game, and easing the pressure on its teammates during cleanup in the end-game. Keep in mind that switching Amoonguss out of a dangerous situation has the benefit of restoring its health, so if Amoonguss is highly pressured and a safe switch is available, switching out is often the best option.

Team Options
========

Amoonguss struggles to take multiple super effective hits and appreciates teammates that can hurt threats like Heatran, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Gardevoir, and Talonflame. Pokemon with Rock-type attacks can hurt the Flying-, Fire-, and Ice-type Pokemon that scare Amoonguss, so Terrakion, Landorus-T, and Mega Diancie are all good choices. Amoonguss also helps them in return by redirecting Hydro Pumps, Close Combats, Flash Cannons, and any non-STAB Grass-type moves. Amoonguss does a great job at aiding setup, so boosting Pokemon that don't share its weaknesses, such as Azumarill, have a much easier time with Amoonguss on the field. Substitute users such as Heatran and Kyurem-B have a much easier time getting up a Substitute with Amoonguss around to redirect attacks. Amoonguss works extremely well under Trick Room with its low Speed stat, so Trick Room attackers make for great partners. For example, Mega Camerupt removes the Grass-types that shut down Amoonguss while Amoonguss returns the favor against Water-types. In a similar vein, Cresselia, Chandelure, and Jellicent help Amoonguss by setting up Trick Room and beating threats to its success. Amoonguss has almost no offensive presence itself, so it needs partners that can pressure the opposing team offensively in order to avoid losing all momentum. Thus, any offensively oriented pokemon that doesn't share too many weaknesses with Amoonguss is a good teammate.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Sludge Bomb can be used over Giga Drain for a better matchup against Grass-types like Breloom, but that makes Amoonguss lose both the possibility of recovery and its great matchup against bulky Water-types like Suicune. Foul Play can be used over Giga Drain to punish physical attackers like Power-Up Punch Mega Kangaskhan more effectively, but it's very situational. Protect can be forgone in favor of one of the above attacking moves considering Amoonguss can likely take whatever attacks it would be avoiding anyway, but this leaves it much more vulnerable, especially when it is revealed that Amoonguss doesn't carry Protect. Mental Herb can stop Taunt from ruining Amoonguss's day, but it's single use and typically not enough to outweigh the benefits of Sitrus Berry. Black Sludge or Leftovers can be used for turn-by-turn recovery, but Amoonguss is rarely on the field long enough for it to provide more healing than a Sitrus Berry due to Doubles OU's fast-paced nature. If your team has particular trouble with Fire-types or Flying-types, Amoonguss can run an Occa Berry or Coba Berry to gain the ability to survive one attack and, usually, put the foe to sleep. However, this is a fairly specialized item, and Rocky Helmet or Sitrus Berry generally proves useful more often.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Typing Advantage**: Offensive Fire-, Flying-, Ice-, and Psychic-types such as Mega Charizard Y, Talonflame, Deoxys-A, and Hoopa-U can hit Amoonguss hard, limiting its ability to redirect attacks away from its partner. Grass-type Pokemon are immune to Spore and Rage Powder and take little damage from Giga Drain. Mega Camerupt can underspeed Amoonguss under Trick Room and do massive damage to it.

**Utility Moves**: Taunt shuts down Amoonguss's main functions on the field, preventing it from using Spore, Rage Powder, or Protect. Although Amoonguss usually carries an attacking move, its uninvested Special Attack stat is too low for it to do much damage. Substitute blocks Amoonguss's Spore, and the two most common users, Heatran and Kyurem-B, can do lots of damage in return.

**Miscellaneous**: Even if they don't do much damage to Amoonguss, spread moves prevent it from redirecting attacks. Some examples include Mega Gardevoir's Hyper Voice, Mega Diancie's Diamond Storm, and Landorus-T's Rock Slide. Spread utility moves like Icy Wind and Snarl also hurt Amoonguss's partner's effectiveness. Safety Goggles users such as Cresselia and Jirachi and Pokemon with Overcoat such as Escavalier and Reuniclus are immune to Spore and Rage Powder, and most of them take little damage from Amoonguss's attacking options.

  • Access to Rage Powder lets it redirect dangerous attacks away from its partner, and with the help of Regenerator as well as great defensive stats, Amoonguss can afford to take lots of hits. In addition to this, Amoonguss resists many common attacking types like Fighting, Electric, and Fairy and thus can check big threats like Keldeo, Azumarill, and Terrakion.
  • Works during almost any section of the match, is rarely 'deadweight' and even when it is, Amoonguss gains health back from switching out of deadweight situations
  • Great check to Trick Room teams thanks to Spore and its low Speed
  • Also does well on Trick Room itself, taking advantage of the switched turn order by putting everything to sleep since Sleep Clause isn't active in Doubles
  • Has trouble against opposing grass types that it cannot redirect or put to sleep
  • Very little offensive presence

Moves
========
  • Rage Powder removes offensive pressure from its partner on the field, allowing said partner to attack an opposing threat or set up without worry of taking damage
  • Spore puts anything to sleep, immobilizing it and gaining momentum by reducing the 2v2 scenario to 2v1
  • Giga Drain allows Amoonguss to not entirely be Taunt bait. It also restores some health, which is great for such a defensively-oriented Pokemon
  • Protect allows Amoonguss to scout for attacks, especially for when you predict a double target on Amoonguss

Set Details

  • Sitrus Berry is usually the better item to have on Amoonguss, giving it more health to work with against any attack that does not outright KO it. This allows Amoongus to use Rage Powder more freely
  • However, Rocky Helmet can be nice to punish physical attackers, dealing damage every hit. This is especially nice against Mega Kangaskhan, against whom it deals twice as much damage due to Parental Bond, and Focus Sash users like Breloom, Bisharp, or Terrakion that make contact since it breaks their sash
  • 252 HP and 184 Defense EVs allow Amoongus to always live Timid Life Orb Latios' Psyshock
  • The rest is placed into Special Defense with a Sassy nature to give Amoonguss more special bulk, allowing it to live things like Kyurem-B's Ice Beam and Mega Camerupt's Heat Wave.
  • A speed-decreasing nature and 0 Speed IVs are chosen to give Amoonguss a better Trick Room matchup, since with a speed stat of 30 it isn't going to be outspeeding anything anyway

  • Amoonguss works well throughout the match, Spore-ing big threats early to gain momentum, aiding setup and better positioning during the midgame, and easing the pressure on its teammates during clean up in the endgame
  • Don't be afraid to switch out so long as you have a viable option to switch to, since this restores 1/3 of Amoonguss' health
Team Options
========
  • Amoonguss struggles to take multiple super-effective hits, and appreciates teammates that can hurt threats like Heatran, Mega Charizard-Y, Mega Gardevoir, and Talonflame

  • Substitute users such as Heatran and Kyurem-Black have a much easier time getting up a Substitute with Amoonguss to redirect attacks
  • Amoonguss works extremely well under Trick Room with its low Speed stat, so Trick Room attackers make great partners. For example, Mega Camerupt removes the Grass-types that wall Amoonguss while it returns the favor against Water-types

**Typing Advantage**: Offensive Fire-, Flying-, Ice-, and Psychic-types like Mega Charizard-Y, Talonflame, Deoxys-A, and Hoopa-U can hit Amoonguss hard, limiting its ability to redirect attacks away from its partner. Grass-type Pokemon are immune to Spore and Rage Powder and take little damage from Giga Drain. Mega Camerupt can outslow Amoonguss under Trick Room and do massive damage to it.

**Utility Moves**: Taunt shuts down Amoonguss' main functions on the field, preventing it from using Spore, Rage Powder, or Protect. Although it usually carries an attacking move, Amoonguss' Special Attack stat is too low for it to do much with such little investment. Substitute prevents Amoonguss from putting that Pokemon to sleep, and the two most common users, Heatran and Kyurem-B, can do lots of damage in return.

**Miscellaneous**: Spread moves prevent Amoonguss from being able to redirect, so even if they don't do much damage to Amoonguss, they still cause Rage Powder to be useless. Some examples include Mega Gardevoir's Hyper Voice, Mega Diancie's Diamond Storm, and Landorus-T's Rock Slide. Spread utility moves like Icy Wind and Snarl also hurt Amoonguss' partner's effectiveness. Safety Goggles users like Cresselia and Jirachi and Pokemon with Overcoat like Escavalier and Reuniclus are immune to Spore and Rage Powder, and like the aforementioned Grass-types, most of them take little damage from Amoonguss' attacking options.

Ayy here's an AM QC check

Overview
  • You call it one of the best supporters in the metagame, but never explain why. What makes Amoonguss so great in Doubles? Be sure to answer that question in the first bullet point.
  • Great Defensive stats and typing should be in the same bullet point as Regenerator. Both are reasons explaining Amoonguss' fantastic bulk, so they should go together.
  • How does Amoonguss check a wide variety of threats? It certainty isn't because of its Offenses. Be sure to explain this as well.
Moves
  • You don't have to explain what every single move and thing does exactly. You have to assume that the person reading this has a basic understanding of competitive Pokemon. We know Rage Powder redirects single target attacks, we know Spore has 100% accuracy, we know Sitrus Berry recovers 25% of health. Avoid stating these type of things that can be found by looking in the teambuilder.
  • Go beyond what the moves do from the core, and go more in-depth as to what their purpose is. For example, Rage Powder takes offensive pressure off of Amoonguss' partner, allowing it to take care of an opposing threat. Spore immobilizes opponents, allowing for more gain in momentum. What's the benefit of running these moves?
  • The bullet point about Safety Goggles and Overcoat belong more in Usage Tips rather than Moves.
  • Remove the Terrakion benchmark from Moves, as you explain it again in Set Details.
Set Details
  • Again, avoid stating the type of things that can be found by looking in the teambuilder. You don't need to state exact percentages.
  • You can keep the explanation of the Sitrus Berry recovery HP though. That's lesser known information.
Usage Tips
  • When in the game is it best to use Amoonguss? Does it work best as a lead to gain some early momentum, mid-game to regain lost momentum, or late-game as a win-condition? This is one of the most important questions to answer in this section. I think Amoonguss is pretty versatile and can work in all three, but be sure to explain why.
Team Options
  • Saying that Amoonguss doesn't really need any support is inaccurate. There are plenty of things such as Talonflame, Charizard, and Hoopa-U that destroy Amoonguss. Saying that Amoonguss doesn't need much support once it's checks are removed would be a more accurate statement.
  • Give some examples of teammates that would check the list of threats you gave. Some good ones include Landorus-T and Hydreigon.
  • Your third point doesn't make a lot of sense, and I think should be worded differently. You make it sound like Amoonguss is only good on hyper-offensive teams, when it acually functions very well on balanced offensive teams (aka "good stuffs" teams). There really isn't a defensive team style in Doubles. I would reword this point or remove it all together.
Other Options
  • Be sure to explain why these options aren't as good as the ones in the moveset. For example: "Sludge Bomb can be used over Giga Drain for a better match-up against Grass-types like Breloom, but it causes Amoonguss to lose additional recovery and its good match-up against bulky Water-types." and "Foul Play can be used over Giga Drain to punish Physical attackers like Power-Up Punch Mega Kangaskhan more effectively, but this is very situation and generally not very useful."

Also "Amoongus" is spelled with another "s" lel

Be sure to check with a QC member before implementing any of these ^_^

Another spread you could use is 192 HP / 136 Def / 28 SpA / 152 SpD. This gives Amoonguss an HP stat that is a multiple of 3, maximizing Regenerator recovery. It also survives an Adamant Mega Kangaskhan's Double Edge and 28 Special Attack EVs guarantees the 2HKO on Keldeo and Terrakion
This is flawed reasoning. You're implying the reason for this spreads is to have a HP stat that is a multiple of 3, but 252 HP also gives you a HP stat that is a multiple of 3. The main spread also has more HP and Def so it's easily going to survive Double Edge - wouldn't it just be better to take 28 SpA from Def from the main spread?

Point taken. Doing some calcs, I realize now that the spread I listed also lives a Choice Specs Hydreigon's Fire Blast, but since that doesn't feel like a super relevant benchmark, I'll fix it to be moving 28 SpA from SpD so that it still lives Latios' Psyshock.

I'd probably not even mention a 28 SpA spread for two reasons:

1. Keldeo, which is a lot more relevant in this meta, almost always uses a Life Orb so even with 0 SpA you can always 2HKO it. Terrakion is a lot less likely to have a Life Orb, so the 28 SpA to always 2HKO it is slightly more relevant in this case buuuuuttttttt

2. As long as you have them targeting into Amoonguss with Close Combat or w/e Keldeo is using, Amoonguss is doing its job. Admittedly, Terrakion can use a spread Rock Slide, but as mentioned, Terrakion is rare in the meta, and figuring out when it's going to Rock Slide is simple enough that it is easier to just bring in the appropriate check.

Not to mention both of them often just switch out if Amoonguss is on the board.

Moved it to OO with extra disclaimers since I figure it doesn't lose anything by moving just 28 EVs. If you feel like it's really that unnecessary I'll remove it altogether, but I think because of the lack of drawbacks it's ok in OO.

tbh I wouldn't even justify it by saying Terrakion is uncommon. Fact is Terrakion is also pretty likely to be -1 SpD from Close Combat.

aight, looks good enough for 1/3 after the following

Set Details:
You can run the same spread but with a Relaxed nature to always live a Mega Metagross Zen Headbutt, if you'd like a more physically defensive Shroom.

[Team Options]
Emphasize that Amoonguss's lack of offensive presence almost demands that its partner be able to maintain a high level of presence itself, otherwise it could just kill any sort of momentum you might have. If a 'mon can maintain a high offensive presence and doesn't share too many weaknesses with Amoonguss, they work well together. Of course listing everything that falls under this category would take too long so just narrow it down (you have most of it already)

Mega Camerupt deserves a particular mention if using Amoonguss in Trick Room

Other Options:
Black Sludge, and maybe specific resist berries (Coba / Occa) should go here as well if other QC would agree

Overview
  • i think you could also put more emphasis on amoonguss's good defensive typing. by resisting their stabs, you render all sorts of relevant threats near-useless via redirection, such as keldeo, terrakion, azumarill etc
Moves
  • you could probably rephrase the rage powder bullet a little bit. saying that it should only be used once the opponent comes to a """certain realization""" sounds pretty weird, considering that every last doubles amoonguss on earth will be running rage powder.
  • i think that the better way to say it would be stating that protect can be used when predicting the opponent to double target amoonguss (with their neutrally-/super- effective coverage moves).
Set Details
  • mention that sitrus berry is used over leftovers or black sludge because getting the health boost as quickly as possible is important in a fast paced meta like doubles
Checks & Counters
  • when you mention "two of amoongus's moves" in typing advantage and misc, just say spore and rage powder. i think it just sounds better but theres no reason to be vague with your reasoning also its probably safe to assume that most of the people that read through analyses are newer users
  • also make sure that ur line on safety goggles is attached to **Miscellaneous** lol

looks neat BUT in your Typing Advantage point you say that amoonguss gets ohkoed by camerupt's fire move; this could be construed as a bit misleading because:

252+ SpA Sheer Force Mega Camerupt Heat Wave vs. 252 HP / 72+ SpD Amoonguss: 362-428 (83.7 - 99%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (factoring doubles)

and not all camerupts run fire blast. so, you could either say that amoonguss gets ohkoed by camerupt's fire blast or if you dont want to get too specific, then just say that camerupt deals massive damage to amoonguss

once u do that its

shaian 's facedown card finally activates. First post as QC member hype!

Already discussed the below points with shaian so we are both on the same page regarding this.

Part of the reason why the amoonguss revamp is happening is not only because of rocky helmet getting used as a viable item nowadays, but because of how dominant rocky helmet has been in terms of usage far over sitrus. So we want the analysis to reflect that.

Set
  • Update the set by putting Rocky Helmet before Sitrus Berry in the slashes as this is the one we want to highlight and probably the one going in the importable
  • Place Relaxed nature on the main set as Rocky Helmet is generally accompanied by it to take physical hits better while dealing Rocky Helmet damage towards attacks that make contact such as from Mega Kangaskhan
Set Details
  • Update this accordingly to reflect Rocky Helmet as the main item used nowadays.
  • Just like the set highlight the relaxed set more in the set details instead of being talked about at the end.
  • Relaxed 72 Special Defense still lives Kyurem Black's Ice Beam so its not exclusive to the Sassy one, so be sure to note that down when around the mention of the two spreads.
Usage Tips
  • Reword the last sentence to be a bit more clear that regenerator is being used and why its its being used
  • Could word it something like this: "Amoonguss often gets low on health amidst redirection and switching into attacks for the team, but it is still able to maintain its HP thanks to Regenerator healing it for 1/3 of its health when it switches out. This enables Rocky Helmet Amoonguss in particular to have reliable ways to recover even though it lacks a Sitrus berry"

Everything else looks good.

In addition to this, Amoonguss has great defensive typing, (AC) - resisting common attacking types like Water, Fighting, Electric, and Fairy, which allows and allowing it to check big threats like Keldeo, Azumarill, Rotom-W, and Terrakion. Amoonguss is especially valuable because it works during any period section of the match, (RC) and is rarely dead weight 'deadweight'. Although Amoonguss has a lot going for it, it has very little offensive presence, so it needs to be partnered with an offensive Pokemon something that does have offensive presence in order to do its job. Amoonguss also struggles against opposing Grass-types.

Rage Powder removes offensive pressure from Amoonguss's its partner on the field, allowing it said partner to attack an opposing threat or set up without worry of taking damage. Spore puts a foe anything to sleep, immobilizing it and gaining momentum by reducing the 2v2 scenario to 2v1. Giga Drain allows Amoonguss to not entirely be Taunt bait, (RC) and allows it to check Pokemon such as Rotom-W, Keldeo, and Terrakion. It also restores some health, which is great for such a defensively oriented Pokemon. Protect allows Amoonguss to scout for attacks or protect itself for when you are predicting a double target.

Set Details
========

For the main item, Rocky Helmet is used in order to punish physical attackers, dealing damage with every hit. This is especially nice against Mega Kangaskhan, against which whom it deals twice as much damage due to Parental Bond, and Focus Sash users that make contact like Breloom, Bisharp, and or Terrakion, as since it breaks their Focus Sashes. A Sitrus Berry can be a useful alternative on Amoonguss, giving it more health to work with against any attack that does not outright KO it, (RC) and allowing it to use Rage Powder more freely. 252 HP and 184 Defense EVs and a Relaxed nature allow Amoongus to always survive live a Jolly Mega Metagross's Zen Headbutt. The rest of the EVs are placed into Special Defense to help Amoonguss survive attacks allowing it to live things such as a Kyurem-B's Ice Beam. A Speed-decreasing nature and a 0 Speed IVs are chosen to give Amoonguss a better Trick Room matchup, and since with a Speed stat of 30 it isn't going to be outspeeding anything outside of Trick Room anyway. The same spread but with a Sassy nature over a Relaxed one is usable to grant Amoonguss the ability to still always live a Life Orb Latios' Psyshock and while also living survive Mega Camerupt's spread Heat Wave while still surviving Life Orb Latios's Psyshock.

Usage Tips
========

Using Amoonguss is fairly straightforward—use Spore against Trick Room setters that aren't immune to it, on predicted switches, and while Amoonguss's your partner is protecting itself. Use Giga Drain when Amoonguss has you have been Taunted or when it is super effective and Amoonguss's your partner isn't in danger. Use Protect against Fake Out or if the opponent is likely to double target Amoonguss and your other Pokemon partner can knock out one of the threats. Otherwise, use Rage Powder to redirect non-threatening moves to Amoonguss and allow your its partner to move safely, whether it be setting up or attacking. Keep in mind, however, that Be careful, since Rage Powder and Spore do not affect Grass-types, Safety Goggles users, and Pokemon or anything with Overcoat. Amoonguss works well throughout the match, Spore-ing neutralizing big threats with Spore early-game to gain momentum, aiding setup and better positioning during the mid-game, and easing the pressure on its teammates during cleanup in the end-game. (this sounds more Set Detailsy; ability info should go there)

Team Options
========

Amoonguss struggles to take multiple super effective hits, (RC) and appreciates teammates that can hurt threats like Heatran, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Gardevoir, and Talonflame. Amoonguss does a great job at aiding setup, so boosting set-up Pokemon that don't share its weaknesses, such as like Azumarill, (AC) have a much easier time with Amoonguss on the field. Substitute users such as Heatran and Kyurem-Black have a much easier time getting up a Substitute with Amoonguss around to redirect attacks. Amoonguss works extremely well under Trick Room with its low Speed stat, so Trick Room attackers make for great partners. For example, Mega Camerupt removes the Grass-types that wall Amoonguss while Amoonguss returns the favor against Water-types. In a similar vein, Cresselia, Chandelure, and Jellicent help Amoonguss by setting up Trick Room and beating threats to its success. Amoonguss has almost no offensive presence itself, so it needs partners that who can pressure the opposing team offensively in order to avoid losing all momentum. Thus, any offensively oriented Pokemon that doesn't share too many weaknesses with Amoonguss is a good teammate.

Other Options
=============

Protect can be forgone in favor of one of the above attacking moves considering since Amoonguss can likely take whatever attacks it would be avoiding anyway, but this leaves it much more vulnerable, especially when it is revealed that Amoonguss doesn't carry Protect. Mental Herb can stop Taunt from ruining Amoonguss's day, but it's single use and typically that's not enough to outweigh the benefits of Sitrus Berry. Black Sludge or Leftovers can be used for turn-by-turn recovery, but Amoonguss is rarely on the field long enough for it to provide more healing than a Sitrus Berry due to Doubles OU being such a fast-paced metagame. If your team has particular trouble with Fire-types or Flying-types, (AC) then Amoonguss can run an Occa Berry or Coba Berry, respectively, as this gives it to gain the ability to live survive one attack and, usually, put the foe to sleep. However, this is a fairly specialized item and Sitrus Berry or Rocky Helmet generally proves useful more often the time.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Typing Advantage**: Offensive Fire-, Flying-, Ice-, and Psychic-types like Mega Charizard Y, Talonflame, Deoxys-A, and Hoopa-U can hit Amoonguss hard, limiting its ability to redirect attacks away from its partner. Grass-type Pokemon are immune to Spore and Rage Powder and take little damage from Giga Drain. Mega Camerupt can outslow underspeed Amoonguss under Trick Room and do massive damage to it.

**Utility Moves**: Taunt shuts down Amoonguss's main functions on the field, preventing it from using Spore, Rage Powder, or Protect. Although it Amoonguss usually carries an attacking move, Amoonguss' its uninvested Special Attack stat is too low for it to do much damage with such little investment. Substitute blocks Amoonguss's Spore prevents Amoonguss from putting that Pokemon to sleep, and the two most common users, Heatran and Kyurem-B, can do lots of damage in return.

**Miscellaneous**: Although they don't do much damage to Amoonguss, spread moves prevent it Amoonguss from being able to redirecting attacks, so even if they don't do much damage to Amoonguss, they still cause Rage Powder to be useless. Some examples include Mega Gardevoir's Hyper Voice, Mega Diancie's Diamond Storm, and Landorus-T's Rock Slide. Spread utility moves like Icy Wind and Snarl also hurt Amoonguss's partner's effectiveness. Safety Goggles users like Cresselia and Jirachi and Pokemon with Overcoat like Escavalier and Reuniclus are immune to Spore and Rage Powder, and like the aforementioned Grass-types, most of them take little damage from Amoonguss' attacking options.
