Awkward Balance

Hello Smogon and Pokefans :D
I'm here with my first RMT, in my favorite tier : RU. A long time ago, I started playing on PO and really loved the tier so I stayed. After a pokemon-hiatus I decided to return to the tier and see what's new. I came up with my current team about a month or so ago and I'd love to have some ideas possible switches or changes. So now onto the team :) Shoutout to Mylo who recommended Rhydon and Escavalier! Thanks!

** All changes will be in ITALICS!**

This team plays along the strategy of a quick and powerful offense using a hit-and-run technique, followed by support from my walls and a final clean up sweep by either Sceptile or Hitmonlee.
Now a look in depth :

The Offensive Lead
112.gif

"Rocky"
Rhydon @ Eviolite
Lightningrod
EVs: 88 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 84 SDef / 80 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Att, -SAtk)

- Roar
- Rock Blast
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
This set was recommended to me by Mylo, and I really love the upgrade! (Thanks) He effectively handles Entei and Moltress, who pose a threat to my team. Roar is great for Pokes trying to set up, as well as spreading some Stealth Rock damage. He works especially well with Tangrowth, who resists both his 4x weaknesses and Escavalier who resists Grass. All around, Rhydon is a great addition to my team and I welcome him with open arms!
This position was formerly occupied by Armaldo.

The Special Sweeper/Cleaner-Upper
254.gif

"George"
Sceptile @ Life Orb
Overgrow
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)

- Leaf Storm
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Ice] / HP [Rock]
- Focus Blast
Here's my 1st sweeper, George the Sceptile. This thing is often used as my late-game cleaner-upper and does an excellent job at hitting walls hard and sometime revenge killing anything other than Scarf users and Accelgor. The EVs are standard on a special Sceptile and the moveset is too. However, I've opted to use HP Ice over HP Rock because it does surprise Druddigon, who can be a major pain, and Tangrowth, who gives me headaches. Sceptile is a simple hit and run: switch in, either kill it or predict the switch in and kill that, then hide behind anyone who resists the switch-in.

The "Bulky" Sweeper
160.gif

"Mel"
Feraligatr @ Lum Berry
Torrent
EVs: 104 HP / 252 Atk / 152 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)

- Swords Dance
- Waterfall
- Aqua Jet
-
Crunch
Voilà, the beast that is Feraligatr. Since Totodile was my first Poke ever (from Gold), I figured why not add Feraligatr to this team. She is mainly my bulky-ish sweeper and revenge killer with the help of Aqua Jet. Additionally, Fera has good synergy with Sceptile and Tangrowth, coming in on Fire/Ice attacks and allowing her to set up a SD in the process. Crunch is very handy for taking care of Slowbro and Uxie, as well as Mismagius. Lum Berry also helps me get a boost and not suffer any status pains from the likes of Spiritomb, Tangrowth (I wouldn't stay in against it but whatever) and many others.

Changes : New EV spread (bulkier) as well as Lum Berry to replace Life Orb

The Speedy, Mid-Game Sweeper
106.gif

"Bruce"
Hitmonlee @ Fighting Gem
Unburden
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)

- Mach Punch
- Hi Jump Kick
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
I love this guy. Hitmonlee is not only massively powerful, but after using my Fighting Gem, he clocks in at over 540 in Speed. Moves and EV's are obvious for maximum damage and coverage, hitting mostly everything with neutral or SE damage. Hitmonlee is usually used as my Mid-Game sweeper, creating holes in the opponents team for either Fera or Sceptile to finish off.

He is also my answer to Moltres, seeing as I outspeed (with Unburden activated) and easily OHKO with Stone Edge. He also takes care of other annoyances such as Galvantula, Entei (After SR) and bulky normal types.

The Physical Tank
465.gif

"Camper!"
Tangrowth @ Leftovers
Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)

- Sleep Powder
- Leech Seed
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Giga Drain

I have no idea why so many people don't use Tangy. With 404 HP and 383 Def, he's one of the bulkiest Pokemon in the game! Playing the role of a dedicated physical wall, Tangrowth can take hits from virtually anything. It can even endure a Flare Blitz from CB Entei at Max HP if needed and put it to sleep after.

Since I don't run Synthesis, Giga Drain is used as a semi-reliable recovery in conjunction with Leech Seed. Despite his low Base 50 Special Defense, Tangrowth can take some special hits and either disable the enemy with Sleep Powder or Leech Seed too. HP Fire is my main counter to Grass types that are immune to Leech Seed and Durant, a big pain in my ass.

The Heavy Duty Wallbreaker

589.gif

"Sir Robin"
Escavalier @ Choice Band
Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Megahorn
- Sleep Talk
- Pursuit
- Iron Head
Also recommended by Mylo, Escavalier is something I never really put any thought into and I realise how silly that was of me. This is the typical CB Escavalier, allowing me to handle TR Slowking, Hail teams and Druddigon! I can also revenge kill Jynx who can give me major headaches, with Pursuit if it flees, or Iron Head. He has great synergy with Rhydon, resisting Grass types who aren't carrying HP Fire, as well as Tangrowth and Sceptile, resisting Poision and Ice moves. Escavalier is also my sleep absorber with the help of Sleep Talk, preventing my other sweepers from being virtually taken out.
This position was formerly occupied by Altaria.

Popular Threats... (From personal experience)
146.gif

Moltres is always a pain in the butt for me. If Hitmonlee is knocked out, not much can touch it. Altaria can take its Fire moves, but if it carries Substitute, Altaria can only try to break them. Armaldo can also come in and hit it hard with Rock Blast, but it often won't live long enough to do so. Handled by Rhydon

124.gif

I hate Jynx. This thing sets up and can wreck my whole team. Hitmonlee can knock it out with Stone Edge, but I often need to sacrifice someone in order to attempt a revenge kill. Even if it is a rare sight, it can be decimating. Escavalier counters it

632.gif

Durant is usually a pain if I can't take it out with Tangrowth. If not, Sceptile can kill it, but Focus Blast is often unreliable. Oddly, I haven't seen many around, but usually taken out by Sceptile or Hitmonlee.

199.gif

Slowking and trick room teams can cause problems for me. If Slowking carries Ice Beam, he can be a big problem to deal with, usually needing to stall out Trick Room and trying to get it poisoned. Handled by Escavalier

244.gif

Entei is somewhat of an issue. On sets that run Sleep Talk, I can get completely screwed of be able to set up, depending on what move is used. CB Entei does a huge load to Tangy, but Altaria can usually tank his hits and Roost off the damage, although it can't damage it much without Toxic. Entei is now easily handled by Rhydon, who either scares it away or KO's it, while resisting all of its moves.

Hey man !

This looks like a pretty solid team :) I like it alot, and I like how you use Armaldo and Altaria, which are two very underrated pokémon.
I can't really see any glaring weakness, I would, however, love it if you could upload some replays. That would help working out any possible flaws your team might have.
Keep going, and seriously congrats on this original team !

Hey, this seems like a pretty cool team with one of my favourite pokemon, Sceptile. No team is perfect and yours isnt an exception.

Firstly as you mentioned Fire types like Moltres and Entei can easily break your team as your both your Fire resist gets 2hko'd by above threats. Altaria gets 1hko'd by Stone Edge and 2hko'd by Moltres' Hurricane, after SR. Hail teams looks like a huge threat to this team with you only having one Ice resist (who actually lacks the bulk to take Specs Blizzards). You also lack an answer to CB Druddigon since Tangrowth is outsped and 2hko'd. Druddigon can just spam Outrage and something either dies or gets 2hko'd.

On to my suggestions. To handle Fire types easier I suggest replacing Armaldo with either Rhydon or Regirock. Both have their merits. Regirock is more reliable since it has Leftovers recovery. Regi also doesnt have that nasty x4 weakness to Grass type attacks, this allows Regi to tank a few Hidden Power Grass assaults from Moltres and Entei. Regirock also provide paralysis support for Feraligatr. Rhydon on the other hand has a better offensive presence and can do some serious damage to foes with that amazing base 130 Attack. With such great Defences (even further boosted by Eviolite) Rhydon doesnt even have to be ev'ed max hp / max def. It can actually invest in its attack. The loss isnt that huge since it cant beat the common RU spinblocker and your teams doesnt need rapid spin support that badly for you to have Armaldo. Another alternative is Kabutops > Armaldo. Kabutops provides Stealth Rock + Rapid Spin like Armaldo but it provides a crucial Fire resist.

@ Leftovers | Clear Body
Careful | 248 HP / 252 SDef / 8 Def
Stealth Rock | Rock Slide | Earthquake | Thunder Wave or Toxic or Protect

112.png
@ Eviolite | Lightningrod
Adamant | 88 HP / 252 Atk / 84 SpD / 84 Spe
Stealth Rock | Earthquake | Rock Blast | Megahorn or Roar

As I mentioned earlier you have a concerning Hail weakness as well as a Dragon weakness. The solution? Enter Escavalier. Escavalier provides a crucial Steel typing which 1) resists Ice attacks (Hail teams and/or Jynx), 2) resist Dragon type attacks (Druddigon and/or other Dragons like Fraxure) and 3) it can take on OTR Slowking. Escavalier helps ease the pressure off Feraligatr as another Ice resist and can reliably retaliate with an extremely powerful Megahorn or Iron Head or in Jynx case Pursuit, as it would be fleeing anyway. I'd suggest using Escavalier > Altaria. Altaria isnt really good in the current meta where Hail roams every corner. Altaria also isnt that usefull for you team and only makes you lose momentum, due to it being slow and weak. However, Escavalier, although slow, hits absurdly hard with a Choice Band.

589.png
@ Choice Band | Overcoat or Swarm
Adamant | 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SDef
Megahorn | Iron Head | Pursuit | Sleep Talk

Lastly, I suggest switching Feraligatr's EVs to a more bulkier spread (104 HP / 252 Atk / 152 Spe) and changing it item to Mystic Water or Lum Berry. Max speed doesnt really achieve much since you still outsped being a good chunk of the tier. Either use those evs for bulk so gatr can actually tank hits. The Item switch is simple really and its really up to preference. Lum Berry gains more set up oppertunities and Mystic Water boosts Gatr's Water type attacks without you losing 10% each turn.

Sorry for the tl;dr post but I really like this team because I see potential. Anyway, hope my suggestions will help. Good luck =)

Thanks a lot for your help Mylo! I'm running a bulky Fera now, as well as Rhydon.

I have honestly no idea why I never thought of Escavalier, I feel so dumb for not using it now xD All changes will be added to the original post, as well as the Importable.
