[OVERVIEW]

With access to Shell Smash and respectable offensive stats, Barbaracle is a very potent sweeper in NU. This is furthered by Tough Claws, which gives essentially a Life Orb boost to contact moves such as Razor Shell and Cross Chop. In contrast to Carracosta, which shares Barbaracle's typing and role as a Shell Smash sweeper, Barbaracle has a significantly higher base Speed that allows it to outspeed the majority of Choice Scarf users after a boost, while Carracosta has to rely on Aqua Jet to hit them. However, Carracosta's combination of higher Defense and Solid Rock gives it more opportunities to set up, and its access to Aqua Jet gives Carracosta more early- and mid-game presence than Barbaracle. Barbaracle is also severely troubled by the abundance of Grass-types in NU, which put immense amounts of pressure on it.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Shell Smash doubles Barbaracle's Attack, Special Attack, and Speed at the cost of lowering its defenses. Razor Shell is boosted by Tough Claws and is Barbaracle's primary STAB attack, hitting neutral and super effective targets for heavy damage. Return has solid neutral coverage overall, hitting most Pokemon that resist Water for decent damage, and it is also boosted by Tough Claws. Earthquake, despite not being boosted by Tough Claws, OHKOes Garbodor after a boost and avoids Rocky Helmet and Aftermath damage as well as hitting Lanturn hard. Grass Knot hits Quagsire, which would otherwise wall this set due to Unaware, as well as dealing substantial damage to Carracosta. Cross Chop can be used to hit Ferroseed, Miltank, and Poliwrath.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment is used to hit as hard and as quickly as possible. An Adamant nature is preferred over Jolly, as even with a neutral Speed nature Barbaracle hits 470 Speed after a Shell Smash, outpacing a significant portion of the metagame after a boost. However, a Jolly nature can be used if outspeeding positive-natured base 95 Speed Choice Scarf users such as Haunter and Jynx is important. Shuca Berry significantly weakens damage taken from Ground-type attacks, allowing Barbaracle to set up on Normal- and Flying-types such as Tauros, Kangaskhan, and Archeops, which carry Earthquake for coverage. Lum Berry can be used to avoid status conditions from the likes of Miltank, Weezing, and Misdreavus. Tough Claws significantly boosts the power of all of Barbaracle's contact moves.

Usage Tips
========

Barbaracle will often only get one opportunity in the match to set up, so make sure that you have either removed or significantly weakened its checks and counters first. With a Shuca Berry, Barbaracle can set up on Pokemon that would otherwise severely damage it with Earthquake, such as Archeops and Tauros. Set up on Choice-locked Pokemon such as Pyroar locked into Fire Blast and Scyther locked into Aerial Ace or against weaker defensive Pokemon such as Audino and Mawile.

Team Options
========

Wallbreakers such as Sawk, Tauros, and Haunter are good teammates, as they can wear down defensive cores for Barbaracle to sweep late-game. Fire- and Ice-types such as Pyroar, Magmortar, Aurorus, and Jynx act as wallbreakers and also threaten Grass-types, which are problematic for Barbaracle. Bulky Water-types are bothersome for Barbaracle, so Grass-types such as Lilligant, Cacturne, and Vileplume make for good teammates to cover them, and Vileplume also checks Grass-types thanks to its secondary Poison typing. Dual screens support from Uxie and Memento support from Jumpluff and Uxie give Barbaracle more opportunities to set up. Healing Wish support from Mesprit, Lilligant, and Musharna is helpful to potentially give Barbaracle a second chance at sweeping.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Barbaracle can utilize a Stealth Rock lead set, as it has access to support moves such as Taunt and Endeavor. Although it is generally outperformed at this role by Archeops, Barbaracle's value as a lead comes from its Water-type STAB moves to target common Stealth Rock users such as Rhydon and its neutrality to Water unlike Archeops. Stone Edge hits Grass-types and some Water-types harder than Barbaracle's other main attacks, but it is generally not worth the moveslot, as Return is almost always more reliable thanks to its perfect accuracy and the fact that it is just as strong as a STAB Stone Edge. A Choice Scarf or Choice Band can be used with Switcheroo to cripple defensive Pokemon. White Herb can be used to restore Barbarace's defenses after a Shell Smash, which is useful to soften the damage taken from priority attacks.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Tangela, Vileplume, Gourgeist, and Lilligant are major threats to Barbaracle. The first three all sport excellent physical bulk and resist Barbaracle's Water-type attacks and threaten back with a 4x super effective STAB move. Lilligant cannot take boosted attacks, unlike the others, but it acts as more of an offensive check to Barbaracle.

**Water-types**: Water-types such as Pelipper, Prinplup, and Poliwrath resist Barbaracle's Water-type attacks and can prey off of Barbaracle's subpar Special Defense and also threaten to cripple it with a burn from Scald. Poliwrath also has STAB Vacuum Wave to pick off a weakened Barbaracle. Quagsire walls all non-Grass Knot variants thanks to Unaware.

**Physically Bulky Pokemon**: Bulky Pokemon such as Musharna, Uxie, Weezing, and Gurdurr can all take a boosted hit from Barbaracle given that they are sufficiently healthy. Musharna can hinder Barabarcle's sweeping capabilities with a Thunder Wave or Yawn, Uxie can cripple Barbaracle with Thunder Wave or OHKO it with Giga Drain after the Special Defense drop given by Shell Smash or after Stealth Rock, Weezing can cripple it with Will-O-Wisp, and Gurdurr can OHKO Barbaracle with the combination of Drain Punch and Mach Punch.

[OVERVIEW]

- access to shell smash, best boosting move in the game
- great speed for a shell smasher
- access to support moves like taunt and SR
- tough claws boosts its attacks even more, giving a free LO boost to moves like Razor Shell, Return, and Cross Chop
- Most of it's coverage moves have low accuracy
- good all around bulk
- 4x weak to grass, typing makes it tough to set up
- direct competition from costa which has solid rock and aqua jet to help it set up and sweep

Moves
========

- Shell smash boosts your attack, spatk, and speed by 2 stages
- Razor Shell is the main STAB move that hits neutral and SE targets hard
- Return is Tough claws boosted and has great coverage alongside Razor Shell
- Grass Knot 2hkos quagsire which would otherwise wall this set
- Earthquake hits garbodor so that you dont have to make contact and lose health, also its the best way to hit lanturn, as it takes any one hit at full
- Cross Chop can be used to hit Ferroseed harder, while still having good neutral coverage

Set Details
========

- adamant for max power and b/c you outspeed scarf rotom + lilligant anyways
- jolly can be used if you want to outspeed base 95 scarfers and up like what? (I really can't think of anything that relevant, I guess Haunter)
- shuca berry allows you to set up on tauros, rhydon and archeops without worry, while also being able to set up on kanga if healthy how much does drain punch kanga do?
- chople berry can be used in order to set up on stuff like low kick sneasel, while also preveting gurdurr from revenge killing you Not sure I like how Chople is slashed next to Shuca, as it is only for Gurdurr which can beat it 1 on 1 anyway. Maybe try Lum or something to set up on Status mons like Weezing thats been weakened.
- life orb can allow you greater wallbreaking power, although it makes it a lot tougher to set up

Usage Tips
========

  • Barbaracle will often only get one opportunity to set up, so make sure that you have either removed or significantly weakened its checks and counters first.
  • With a shuca berry, barbaracle can set up on pokemon such as archeops and tauros that would otherwise severely damage it with earthquake, and with a chople berry barbaracle can worry less about being revenge killed by gurdurr
  • barbaracle should set up on choice locked pokemon such as pyroar into fire blast or scyther into aerial ace, or against weaker defensive pokemon such as (mega) audino and mawile

Team Options
========

  • Screens support from uxie and memento from uxie and jumpluff and mismagius give barb more opportunities to set up
  • Wallbreakers such as sawk, tauros, and haunter are good teammates to wear down the opposing team for barb to clean late game
  • Grass types such as lilligant, cacturne, and vileplume check water types and plume checks grass types
  • fire and ice types such as pyroar, magmortar, aurorus, and jynx threaten the grass types which are problematic for barb

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Stealth rock lead set with razor shell, taunt, endeavor, grass knot
  • Aerial ace hits poli and grasses harder
  • Stone edge hits grass types most notably gourgeist and some other bulky water types harder
  • choice item with switcheroo

**Gurdurr**: Eviolite Gurdurr is a great physical tank that can take a +2 Razor Shell from Barbaracle and 2HKO it back with Drain Punch and Mach Punch. However, Chople Berry variants of Barbaracle can beat Gurdurr. You actually still lost to Gurdurr 1 on 1 even with the Chople. As it uses Drain Punch after living any one hit, then mach punch after that kills it since you no longer have chople

HI BOLTS YOU ARE MY FIRST QC CHECK AND LEMME TELL YOU WHAT IT'LL BE A GOOD ONE

ik you mention it later, but I think a couple mentions of things it outruns at +2 would fit really well in the overview. Barb's speed is one of the main points that sets itself apart from costa, who is overly dependent on Jet to prevent offensive mons from revenging it.

Do its coverage moves really have "low accuracy?" Razor Shell has a 5% chance to miss and after that the only relevant moves it gets that have a chance to miss are Cross Chop and Stone Edge (which isn't a primary choice on barb)

I'm personally not a big fan of Grass Knot as the first slash for barb's last slot as it is EXCLUSIVELY for Quag. Which, though Quag is a big threat to barb, is very specific and thus matchup dependent. I've found EQ to be more useful than chop/gk, generall. Hell, chop is probably more likely to be dropped from the slot (imo) because its targets are less relevant (ferroseed is the only thing I can think of that it hits over EQ rn?) So really as I'm typing this I'm saying go Earthquake/Grass Knot and Cross Chop in moves :) other QC opinions would be valued on the subject, however

idc where really, but White Herb deserves a mention, be it in Set Details or OO. Compromising more of Barb's bulk on top of whatever damage it will (probably) take when setting up gives way to likely revenge kills from shit like Kanga/Pard/Cact etc etc

Jolly also allows you to outspeed relevant weather abusers at +2 because barb falls short of that golden base 70 tier (which may be a more relevant mention than base 95 scarfers but idrc if you put it alongside the mention)

Healing Wish support is really nice for a mon like barb that's typically a "one shot to sweep"-type roll

I'd add just generally fat, physically defensive mons as checks too. Mush can T-Wave it, Uxie can Giga Drain it, Weezing can Wisp it, etc. Resists are resists, but barb doesn't just one shot everything that it hits for neutral once it sets up as well

add mention of no item so you can take knock offs better

Looks great bud, with this I'll add a QC. 2. /. 3.

In Overview, also note Carracosta's access to Aqua Jet not only competes with Barabarcle's Speed when it comes to maintaining sweeps, but also gives it greater early- to mid-game presence than Barbaracle.

More comparisons between Return and Stone Edge can be emphasized, particularly how Return's perfect accuracy and comparable power after Tough Claws makes it a better coverage move alongside Razor Shell than the considerably less accurate Stone Edge.

Mention specifically that Archeops outperforms Barbaracle at the lead role, but also note on Barbaracle's Water STAB and neutrality to Water moves gives it better matchups against Rapid Spinners and Defoggers alike (which is why lead Barbaracle is even noted in the first place).

In the "Physically bulky Pokemon" section of C&C, mention Thunder Wave users such as Uxie and Musharna.
