LC Barboach

Overview
########

Barboach is extremely weak and frail, both traits that a Pokemon wouldn't want to have. This would normally lead a player to dismiss Barboach as an inferior option. However, a closer look at Barboach will reveal attributes that help it overcome these disadvantages. Barboach's typing leaves it weak to only Grass-type attacks, which means that its terrible defenses are not so easily exploited. Alongside this, Barboach can remedy its poor offensive stats with Dragon Dance, a great boosting move that boosts both its Attack and Speed, allowing it to sweep. Barboach also has a good Speed stat, letting it outspeed a good portion of the tier before a boost. Barboach's STAB attacks in Waterfall and Earthquake are both very good, and it also has Bounce to cover its weakness to Grass-types. Barboach also has the niche of being one of the best counters to Magnemite, a very common Pokemon in Little Cup.

move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Bounce
ability: Oblivious
item: Eviolite
evs: 36 HP / 212 Atk / 12 Def / 28 SpD / 196 Spe
nature: Adamant

Moves
========

Dragon Dance is the main move on the set, as it boosts both Attack and Speed, setting Barboach up to sweep. Waterfall and Earthquake are both STAB moves that hit relatively hard after a boost from Dragon Dance. Bounce is used to take care of Grass-type Pokemon.

Set Details
========

Oblivious is the preferred ability, as it stops Barboach from being hit with Taunt, making it easier to set up Dragon Dance. Eviolite ensures that Barboach can take hits better, letting it set up Dragon Dance more easily as well. 212 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature max out Barboach's Attack stat, which allows it to hit as hard as possible. 196 Speed EVs max out Speed with a neutral nature, allowing Barboach to outspeed the entire unboosted tier after a Dragon Dance. 36 HP EVs and 12 Defense EVs allow Barboach to take priority attacks better, as it is the most common form of attack that Barboach will be hit with while sweeping. 28 Special Defense EVs add a point to Special Defense.

Usage Tips
========

Barboach can set up early game due to its wide coverage, but it's preferred that Barboach sets up late game after most of its checks are weakened or gone. Barboach is also an excellent answer to Magnemite, so it should be used as a check to it and to deter it from knocking out one of Barboach's teammates, which would allow Barboach to set up.

Team Options
========

Barboach makes good use of entry hazard support from Pokemon such as Ferroseed and Dwebble, as entry hazards wear down the opponent's Pokemon, which makes Barboach's sweeping job much easier. Ponyta and Fletchling make good partners, as they can get rid of bulky Grass-types that normally give Barboach trouble. Since Barboach is a perfect answer to Magnemite that lack Hidden Power Grass, as it resists both of its STAB moves and takes little damage from any of its attacks. Because of this, Pokemon such as Fletchling and Spritzee are good partners, as Barboach covers a liability for them.

Other Options
########

Barboach is extremely lacking in other options; Dragon Dance is usually its best set. Barboach has a good special movepool with moves such as Earth Power and Hydro Pump, but while its Special Attack is almost equal to its Attack stat, it has no way of boosting it and therefore is somewhat weak. Spark is pretty weak, but it can be used to hit Mantyke. Most other Water-types, however, are already hit just as hard with Earthquake. Aqua Tail can be used over Waterfall for more power, but the imperfect accuracy can be costly for such a frail Pokemon.

Checks & Counters
########

**Mantyke**: Mantyke is immune to both of Barboach's STAB moves, and isn't very threatened by Bounce. However, Mantyke is hit hard with Spark.

**Revenge Killers**: Barboach is still susceptible to revenge killers such as Choice Scarf users and Focus Sash Abra.

**Bulky Grass-types**: Foongus and Cottonee can easily take a +1 Bounce and OHKO Barboach with a STAB move. Ferroseed in particular is a problem, as it can take any attack from Barboach well and can even set up hazards before it KOes.

**Water-type Immunities**: Water-immune Pokemon can easily switch into a Waterfall and benefit from it. Cacnea can regain health with Water Absorb, but it must be wary of Bounce. Shellos can gain a free Special Attack boost due to Storm Drain. Lileep in particular is a problem due to its immunity to Waterfall and neutrality to both of Barboach's other attacks, as well as being able to OHKO Barboach in retaliation with Giga Drain.

Overview:
Mention that it is somewhat weak before boosts.
Its bulk isn't actually that good; instead, say that it is quite frail, although it can still stomach weaker hits.
I wouldn't say Oblivious is bad, because Taunt prevents it from setting up; however, it's certainly nothing to write home about, so you should probably remove the last point entirely.

Dragon Dance:
Change the EVs to 36 HP / 212 Atk / 12 Def / 196 Spe; this allows Barboach to better stomach priority attacks, which, as a speed-boosting sweeper, will likely be the attacks it encounters the most. Edit the Set Details to reflect this.
Remove Spark's mention under moves; you don't have it in the main set, and besides, it's not very good, as the most common bulky Water-type is Chinchou, and even other bulky waters except the mostly irrelevant Mantyke are hit around same hard by Earthquake.

Other Options:
Mention Spark to deal with Mantyke, but say that it is mostly useless otherwise because Earthquake hits most other Water-types around as hard.

Checks and Counters:
Get rid of Sturdyjuice users, because the most common user of it is Magnemite, who can't really do much without Hidden Power Grass, and hazards are almost mandatory for a sweeper as initially weak as Barboach.
Mention bulky Grass-types, such as Foongus and Cottonee; most of them can stomach a +1 Bounce and easily OHKO with their STAB moves in return. Ferroseed in particular even takes neutral damage from Bounce, allowing it to set a few hazards before KOing with Bullet Seed.

You've gotten very good at this n.n

  • In the Overview, be sure to highlight that Barboach has only one weakness: Grass-type attacks.
  • Enough EVs remain after using the ones in your current spread to have an extra point in Special Defense. All it takes is 28 EVs there to achieve this and so they should be added there. 36 HP / 212 Atk / 12 Def / 28 SpD / 196 Spe.
  • Remove the mention of Dual Screens from Team Options. Literally any setup sweeper would benefit from that tactic, so it's not very special in Barboach's case; it only recommends added support that Barboach doesn't necessarily require to be effective (there aren't many really good Dual Screens users in LC anyway).
  • There should be heavy emphasis on the fact that Barboach takes great advantage of Magnemite. Simply having Barboach on your team assures free setup if the opponent gets a kill with Magnemite, which can be used to manipulate the game (similarly to how Omanyte or Tirtouga can set up freely if Fletchling gets a kill). Additionally, Pokemon that have trouble with Magnemite should be added to Team Options to support this idea; this gives Barboach a niche as a setup sweeper that should definitely be highlighted.
  • In Checks & Counters, there should be a segment specifically for Pokemon that are immune to Waterfall, making them even more of a problem than the everyday Grass-type. Cacnea is a problem here but must beware of Bounce. Lileep is immune to Waterfall and only takes neutral damage from Bounce, while being able to OHKO back with Giga Drain. Shellos is very problematic for Barboach, getting +1 Special Attack by switching into Waterfall and only taking neutral damage from its other attacks, while threatening back with a Scald burn. Other Water-types are also a problem for the same reason, including but not limited to Frillish and Slowpoke, and there's also Shellder (which can Shell Smash past Dragon Dance's boosted Speed and turn the tables).

Dragon Dance is the main move on the set, as it boosts both Attack and Speed, setting Barboach up to sweep. Waterfall and Earthquake are both STABs STAB moves that hit relatively hard after a boost from Dragon Dance. Bounce is used to take care of Grass-type Pokemon.

Set Details

Oblivious is the preferred ability, (AC) as it stops Barboach from being hit with Taunt, making it easier to set up Dragon Dance. An Eviolite ensures that Barboach can take hits better, letting it set up Dragon Dance easier as well. 212 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature max out Barboach's Attack stat, letting it which allows it to hit as hard as possible. 196 Speed EVs max out Speed with a neutral nature, allowing Barboach to outspeed te the entire unboosted tier after a Dragon Dance. 36 HP EVs and 12 Defense EVs allow Barboach to take priority attacks better, as it is the most common form of attack that Barboach will be hit with while sweeping. 28 Special Defense EVs add a point to Special Defense.

Usage Tips

Barboach can set up early game due to its wide coverage, but it's preferred that Barboach sets up late game when most of its checks are weakened or KOd gone. Barboach should simply attack after setting up. Barboach is also an excellent answer to Magnemite, so it should be used as a check to it and to deter it from knocking out one of Barboach's teammates, which would allow Barboach to set up.

Barboach makes good use of entry hazard support from Pokemon such as Ferroseed and Dwebble, as entry hazards wear down the opponent's Pokemon, making which makes Barboach's sweeping job much easier. Ponyta and Fletchling make good partners,(AC) as they can get rid of bulky Grass-types that normally give Barboach trouble. Since Barboach is a perfect answer to Magnemite, as it resists both its STABs and takes little damage from any of its attacks (This sentence should be changed; HP Grass does exist on some Magnemite sets). For this reason, Pokemon weak to Magnemite such as Omanyte, Tirtouga, and Archen make great partners. (They aren't good partners simply because they're weak to Magnemite; you should say they appreciate having Barboach as a teammate because it covers a liability for them; additionally, suggesting two 4x Grass-weak Pokemon as partners when Barboach is already 4x Grass-weak is a horrible idea, suggest something like Fletchling and Spritzee here instead)

Other Options
########

Barboach is extremely lacking of other options;(change comma to semicolon) and Dragon Dance is usually its best set. However, Barboach has a good special movepool with moves such as Earth Power and Hydro Pump, but while its Special Attack is almost exact equal to its Attack stat, it has no way of being boosted and therefore is somewhat weak. A Choice Scarf set can be used, but Barboach is too weak to revenge kill unboosted. A Choice Band set is viable, as Barboach is quick enough to use it and benefits from the power. (The Choice Scarf and Choice Band statements are misleading and don't belong here at all) Spark is pretty weak, but can be used to hit Mantyke. Most Water-types,(AC) however,(AC) are already hit just as hard with Earthquake. Aqua Tail can be used over Waterfall for more power, but the miss risk can be game-changing at time the imperfect accuracy can be costly for such a frail Pokemon.

Checks & Counters

**Mantyke**: Mantyke is immune to both of Barboach's STABs, and isn't very threatened by Bounce. However, Mantyke is hit hard with Spark.

**Revenge Killers**: Barboach is still susceptible to revenge killers such as Choice Scarfers and Focus Sash Abra.(add period)

**Bulky Grass-types**: Foongus and Cottonee can easily take a +1 Bounce and OHKO with a STAB. Ferroseed in particular is a problem as it takes any attack well from Barboach and can even set up hazards before it KOs.

**Water-type immunities**: Water-immune Pokemon can easily switch into Waterfall and benefit from it. Cacnea can regain health with Water Absorb, but must be wary of Bounce. Shellos can gain a free Special Attack boost due to Storm Drain.
