Rias Gremory, "Princess of Crimson Ruin" - Tyrantrum (F)
697.png

Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpAtk) - caring but stern

Type:
Rock type: Rock STAB; Rias is fast on her mind to add an additional level of Priority on Protect. She also takes reduced damage from all special attacks by two (2) Base Attack Power during Sandstorm, and is immune to Sandstorm damage. Her natural magic can mold and build rocks, ignoring Arena restrictions on Rock attacks requiring an external rock source.
Dragon type: Dragon STAB; -1 BAP on incoming neutral attacks Dragon itself would resist. Her powerful will allows Thrash or Outrage to be undisrupted by oncoming damage.

Abilities:
Ability 1: Strong Jaw
Type: Passive
Rias' thick fang and massive jaws give her incredibly powerful biting attacks, increasing the BAP of all biting attacks by three (3) BAP. Full List: Bite, Crunch, Fire Fang, Ice Fang, Poison Fang, Thunder Fang.

Ability 2: Rock Head (Unlocked)
Type: Passive
Rias' body and willpower fortifies herself in battle, preventing it from taking recoil damage from moves such as Double-Edge, Flare Blitz, and Head Smash.

"Currently, our HP difference is minimal, and neither one of us has any clear advantage. Still, the damage from Stealth Rock can and will add up rather quickly, so watch out for that. Orders like the ones you just made, chicken-dancing, are a very common strategy to control match-ups and escape unfavorable situations, so good job on properly assessing the situation and forming a safe counter-strategy. Scizor will be useful to you later."

"Pick your next Pokemon well, and write your orders carefully. Tyrantrum doesn't have a lot of tricks up its stubby little sleeve, but it does have very power coverage and STAB moves."

"Dusknoir's great defenses and movepool mean that it'll rarely have a bad match-up. Your P/E substitution is a little unnecessary though. I outdamage you with Crunch, so there's no real reason for me to need to use Protect. Also, Head Smash only deals 2 more damage than my next strongest attack, so the substitution only saves you a maximum of 6 damage this round. There are a couple things you could've done with those substitution slots instead."

"Good job on KOing Tyrantrum. You've got a solid grasp of combination mechanics and the damage formula. But that Bullet Punch + Giga Impact combo will cost you. Since Pokemon cannot switch out while they're under cooldown, Scizor will be basically a sitting duck next round, spending A1 in cooldown and A2 sluggish. There's another way that you could've killed Tyrantrum without using a combo, though. My first substitution, "If Scizor uses Counter, then use Flamethrower,"has a mistake in it. My Tyrantrum does not have Flamethrower, making that substitution illegal. Since illegal substitutions are ignored, I would've used Fire Fang against your Counter, allowing you to deal massive damage and KO Tyrantrum by using Counter A1 and Bullet Punch A2. Finding and exploiting mistakes in your opponents' substitutions are a big part of ASB battles that you should pay attention to."

"are you actually reading any of this Trick Room isn't the only way I can outspeed you. It's a little convoluted, but a better wording would be: "If Banette is to act before Scizor within the same priority bracket and Banette is to use Phantom Force." This way, the substitution activates when either Banette is slower than Scizor under Trick Room or when Banette is faster than Scizor without Trick Room. Also, you have an extra substitution available. You don't always need to use all of them, but there are some that might've been helpful here, especially since you're facing a tricky Pokemon like Banette."

"Here's some information about switching and counterswitching if you need it. You can initiate a switch phase anytime you order first in a round, as long as you don't initiate them two rounds in a row (note that counter-switching or switching out with a self-switching move like U-turn don't count as initiating a switch phase). During a switch phase, you swap your active Pokemon out. Then, in most cases (unless your opponent is trapped by a move like Fire Spin or Mean Look), your opponent gets an opportunity to counter-switch and swap out their active Pokemon as well, if they choose to do so. However, if your opponent counter-switches, they will have to order first that round, so there's benefits and drawbacks to counter-switching."

Sorry for not really saying anything else other than posting orders, but yes I am definitely reading the advice that you're giving.

EDIT: We posted at the same time, but thanks for the info :). I think I already have a good grasp on switching/counterswitching; did I do this right?

"Overall, you did very well with this battle. You had a bit of a rocky start trying to find ways to counter Tyrantrum, but after that, especially toward the end, you made very good orders. You've definitely demonstrated a solid understanding of ASB elements, and you've got a good start on developing proper battle strategies. You might need to take a bit of time to check your orders (and your opponents' orders) for mistakes: things like Aroma Veil can trip you up in critical times. Similarly, if your opponent makes a mistake like I did with Tyrantrum's Flamethrower substitution, if you can spot those errors, you can easily abuse them to gain a large advantage in the battle. Still, people make mistakes like that all the time, no matter how experienced they are, and I think you've learned quite a bit over the course of this battle."

"I'm excited to see how you'll do in the future. The next time we battle, you'll have 3 fully evolved Pokemon of your own to challenge me with. I'll be waiting."
