"You've been here for quite a while, so it's time for us to have some fun. Think of this as a sneak peak into ASB's late-game play. Try your best to put your Pokemon into favorable matchups. Have fun, and do your best: the first round sets the tone for the rest of the match."

I know I said I'd lead Lanturn, but seeing as every Pokémon in the opposing team can murder it, let's go with Nape instead, shall we?

Sending out Infernape @ Shuca Berry because I'm weird as hell

8ycom1_th.png

"Type-resist berries can be useful items, but only under very specific circumstances, like mitigating a 4x weakness. When sending out your first Pokemon, it'd be better to equip it with a more generally useful item, like Rare Candy. Against Exeggutor, Infernape is essentially itemless, leaving it at a bit of a disadvantage in this match-up."

103.png

Exeggutor @ Expert Belt
Psychic | Psyshock | Psychic
If D/E and Encore is not to be used on the next action, then use Block.
If Infernape is under P/E and Encore is not to be used on the next action, then use Reflect on the first instance and Light Screen on the second.
[Once] If Fake Out and Encore is not to be used on the next action, then Protect.

Ah, it sounded good in my head. Well, let's try to turn the odds around.

Taunt | Fake Out | U-Turn

Probably not the best course of action since I'll be taking a lot of damage, but I still have to get used to items...

8ycom1_th.png

"You had the right idea with U-Turn. Infernape isn't in a great match-up, so switching out to a Pokemon that can handle Exeggutor better is the best thing to do. I'm not really sure about Taunt, though. Unless you have a plan in mind that requires Exeggutor to be taunted next round, there are better moves that you could've done to either deal damage or prevent Infernape from taking damage, like Dig (Block would only deal 10 damage to you) or Slack Off."

"Great orders. You've left me defenseless in a poor match-up. But I've still got a couple tricks up my sleeve. When you've got an opponent cornered in a bad match-up, you should be on the look-out for some last ditch damage maneuvers. Subbing for Self-KO moves can be useful in a situation like this. Also, there's a cool trick you can do with Weavile. Because of its abilities, you can use a consumable held item like Rage Candy Bar, then steal my Expert Belt with Pickpocket, reaping the benefits of two items at once."

Sending out Lanturn @ Rare Candy

Soak | Discharge | Thunderbolt

[NONCONSECUTIVE] IF Mamoswine is to use Endeavor, use Agility (Evasive) on that action instead
IF Mamoswine isn't a Water-type A2 then use Surf A2, Hydro Pump A3
IF Ground-type combo then Agility (Evasive) and push back actions and substitutions

I want to believe I'm accounting for as many possible situations as I can and I'm wording my subs properly.

"There are a couple things that Mamoswine can do that are quite threatening. Since Mamoswine is faster than Lanturn, he can dodge all of your attacks with a D/E move like Dig. A substitution like, "If Dig, then Dive" could help with that. Substitute can block Soak and then serve as a damage sponge for Lanturn's next attack, making it somewhat risky to use attacks that are blocked by Substitute while ordering first, especially without supporting it with substitutions. Also, since Lanturn already hits Mamoswine with STAB super-effective damage, Soak isn't terribly useful against it. Don't worry, though. These are mistakes made from inexperience that everyone has experienced and that you'll quickly learn to avoid."

"Some of your substitutions have small holes in them as well. For one, Agility (Evasive) doesn't block spread moves like Earthquake, so an Earthquake + Earthquake combo would bypass Agility (Evasive) completely. Protect would be more expensive, but would not be bypassed. In addition, only one substitution can activate per round. If multiple ones would activate, like if Mamoswine was not a Water-type and used a Ground-type combo A2, then the one listed first would be the only one to activate, so you would use Surf instead of Agility (Evasive). Substitution rules are tricky and will take you a bit of time to get used to."

Not sure whether an Ice Shard combo has +2 priority or not, but better safe than sorry. Protecting that move doesn't cost me too much EN anyway, so I can afford to be mistaken here.

"I'm extremely impressed by how you did here. You ordered with cleverness, ingenuity, and tenacity that rival a lot of the long-term players here. Most of the mistakes you made were beginner's mistakes that you'll soon learn to avoid, like forgetting to sub for Dig or using suboptimal items. However, there was a major missed opportunity in Round Nine. You could've KOed Cradily with Blizzard | Ice Beam | Blizzard, but you instead allowed me to recover my EN by using Bounce, which dealt very little damage. ASB is a combination of a numbers game and tricks. You're very good on tricks, but a little more focus on the calculations and numbers could let you become an extraordinary player. Still, you performed wonderfully, and I hope you had as much fun here as I did. You really did give me a run for my money here, even though it was your first battle with fully evolved Pokemon."

"I'm excited to see how you'll do in the future. The next time we battle, you'll have 3 fully evolved Pokemon of your own to challenge me with. I'll be waiting."
