Ralts [Female]

Type:
Psychic/Fairy

Abilities:
Synchronize(Passive):
Pokemon with this ability mentally link their condition to an opposing Pokemon and when inflicted by the major status ailments Burn, Poison, or Paralysis, will share their status condition with the opponent. Pokemon will not be inflicted by status conditions to which they are immune by virtue of typing, ability, etc.

Trace(Trigger):
When entering into battle, this Pokemon can copy an ability on one of its opponents for 6 EN. This effect only triggers if the ability to be copied is specified when the Pokemon is sent out. When facing a pokemon with Trace, the Player sending out last must send out the pokemon without orders, in order to give the opponent the opportunity to trigger trace and any orders eventually given will be ignored until given the opportunity for trace to be triggered. The ability remains on the Pokemon for six (6) actions. Wonder Guard cannot be Traced.

Command: Activate Trace (target ability) - 5 En - Replace Trace with the target Ability for six (6) actions. When the copied ability fades, the user regains Trace.

Telepathy(H)(Passive)(Locked):
This Pokemon has a mental link with its allies in multiple battles, which allows it to avoid taking damage from allied attacks that damage each foe or the entire field like Blizzard and Earthquake. They are still affected by an opponents spread damage attacks.

Cupra [Female]

Type:

Abilities:
Shield Dust(Passive):
This Pokemon has dust covering the outside of its body that reduces the Effect Chance of incoming attacks to 0%. This prevents such things as Burns from Flamethrower from occuring.

Keen Eye(Passive):
This Pokemon has extremely good vision and cannot have its accuracy lowered by an opponent through any means (including accuracy lowering attacks, Smogs, Hazes, Fog, etc.). Its vision also enables it to see through any attempts by an opponent to increase their own evasion.

Illusion(H)(Passive)(Locked):
Whenever you send this Pokemon out, it can feign the appearance of another member on your squad. If this Pokemon is damaged by a direct attack, the Illusion will cease at the end of the round. Direct damage is any attack that does damage to the Pokemon's HP. Attacks that are evaded, blocked via Protect, or damage a Substitute are not considered direct damage. It will retain the typing and moveset of the Pokemon with Illusion. [Usage Note: PM the ref if you are sending out a Pokemon with Illusion with the info on said Pokemon and one of your squad members in a Switch=KO battle. You must use that squad member later in the battle though.]

Hello and welcome to the Battling 101 course of ASB! My name's Elizabeth, and I'll be supervising this battle. Today you'll get to learn all the tricks, strategies, and mechanics to get yourself kicking butt. Well, not that much butt. But enough to get started! Lets flip a coin to see who gets to send out first.

Ping! (Heads is the tutor.)

What really happened here is that your initial send-out was not ideal at all. When sending out first, try to go for the most neutral matchup you can. In this case, I would have went with Cupra because it can hit both of my Pokemon hard with Psychic STAB / Hydro Pump.

Substitute does save your hide for another action, but it didn't actually stop anything, and luckily for you Croagunk doesn't know any sound-based moves yet. That would have been fatal; also, that Substitute essentially means you wasted 15 HP if you decide to switch.

Other than that... there's not much that could have been done. Croagunk counters Turtwig pretty hard.

Ordering combos while first is generally a bad idea, but you are in quite the pickle. Your first substitution could be better, since Bite + Bite has -2 priority, Dig's strike phase has -2 priority, so unless I used suspended Dig, you'd still hit anyways. And if I use suspended dig, you Protect'd for no reason. I would have went with Curse, like in your second substitution, since it does something for you instead of stalling. Either way, I'm not gonna abuse it because I gain nothing from it.

This doesn't help you win, and you can't get bonus KOC, but the ideal play here would have been Bug Buzz -- Bug Buzz. That attack does 15 damage, and pierces substitute, and you can use it twice before fainting from EN exhaustion. But now you know!

(Sound based moves are really good! Keep them in mind when dealing with Substitutes.)

You show a lot of competence and ability to learn, but you fell into a lot of newbie traps, such as using your Turtwig way too early. Here are some things to watch out for in the future:

  • If you can, lead with a Pokemon that has as much advantage as possible. There are some situations where this isn't a good idea, such as if you need your best Pokemon to counter a huge threat to your team, but for the most part, go with the best Pokemon against the entire opponent's team. In this case, it would have been Cupra.
  • Beware of combinations ordering first. Easy, easy to abuse. If you need to, put them in substitutions before you put them in main orders.
  • Learn the most dangerous moves and what they can do. In this battle, it was Dig that was extra dangerous, but in the future, you'll encounter Encore, Endure, Taunt, Torment, and much more.
  • When you're up against a VERY bad matchup, your priority is get out with as little damage as possible. Even if the opponent sets up a Swords Dance and a Substitute right in front of your Protects, that's still probably better than getting face-smashed.
However, you did well for your first battle. I'll contact you via PM for the next stage of our 101 course! See you soon!
