Hello, and welcome to the training course of the ASB League! The first and best stop on the way to success! The first step to becoming completely kickass! And... Yeah!

I will be your opponent for today. The name's Elizabeth, and as we battle, I'll be giving you tips, tricks, and explanations for all the various mechanics, basic strategies, and everything else you need to be starting strong. However, I will be playing to win, so don't slack off!

We're gonna let you send out first. Which Pokemon do you choose?

Thunder Punch -- Ice Punch -- Thunder Punch
If Drifloon uses Toxic, use Substitute (15). [Once]

---------

zXX9z66.gif

This is a very basic order set. Each time you order in a Singles match, you get to choose three moves or commands to be used for the current "round". Each round consists of three "actions". Each Pokemon uses their actions based on Speed, so for each action where both Pokemon use a move, Buneary will act first and get to use its action before Drifloon, unless Drifloon uses a priority move like Quick Attack or Protect.

Beneath my orders, you'll notice my substitution. In ASB, a player ordering second usually has an immense advantage, so in order to even the playing field a little bit, you can use substitutions to change your orders depending on what the opponent does. My substitution will trigger if the Drifloon uses the move Toxic, making Buneary use the move Substitute instead of whatever action it normally would do. I could add more clauses to the substitution, such as "Push back actions", which you can find in the Handbook. You'd do very well to learn substitutions and how they work, because they often decide whether or not you're good.

Now, it's your turn War Anvil .

Let's dance then. Get back and Stockpile, then use Payback twice.

Here I'll explain the basics of what a round will look like after a referee finishes their duty in a battle. Each referee has a different format and style, and some feature flavor while others don't (For this battle, I will not). However, they all share the same essentials.

Here is the pre-round. It has the stats and status of the Pokemon before any actions or effects. Items, abilities, HP, EN, Stats, and Status are all listed here in order. To save space, stats are listed without labels, but each ref will always list them in order of Attack/Defense/Special Attack/Special Defense/Speed.

In here, are all the numbers that went into each action. Typically, random effects are rolled with a 10,000 random number generator, since it takes care of each and every chance possible. Some referees will use a 16 RNG for crits, or a 10 die for most move effects, or others. However, all the odds will be the same no matter which die is used, since the numbers will be scaled down. I will be using a 10,000 RNG for every roll.

Now, I will make some comments about your orders.

They were pretty good, considering all the options you had, but your lack of a solid movepool really bites here. Payback is a good neutral move to use, and your most powerful move here, so it's a good move to throw out. Unfortunately, you don't have STAB, so it's still weak. Stockpile was an okay choice, but note that stat boosts are not as great in ASB as they are elsewhere; each boost in Defense decreases attacks by 2 flat damage, not by a flat percentage, so they're mostly useful in long, drawn out matches, which this is not. Attack boosts, similarly, only raise your attacks by two damage flat, so you'd want to do that if your attacks are doing very little damage, or you're using incredibly powerful boosting moves like Tail Glow.

Another ASB quirk to point out is consecutive move penalty. Notice that Payback cost 11 EN on action three, instead of 7 EN. If you use a move multiple times in a row, it'll raise by 4 points each time. Be wary of spamming moves, because fainting by EN is a very real danger.

One of the first things you want to get for your Pokemon is a solid movepool with coverage moves and basic supporting moves. In Drifloon's Egg Moves, you really want to get Destiny Bond and Disable, because those two moves are very good for disabling the opponent Pokemon and messing with their plans; it's hard to KO something when 30 damage is your penalty for it, and disabling a coverage move like Thunder Punch can save your hide from a lot of damage. Your TMs were alright; Toxic and Psychic are good moves to get. Toxic is residual damage, and Psychic is good coverage, but your other three choices do very little for your Pokemon, since Round is weak and Gyro Ball sucks on a fast Pokemon. Confide, similarly, will never see any actual use. Personally, I would have chosen Thunderbolt, Protect, and Substitute instead. Thunderbolt is good coverage, and Protect + Substitute are universal moves that every single Pokemon wants to use to get around your opponent's orders. However, not much would have actually done Drifloon any good here, because unfortunately, it doesn't get very good until it evolves. I guess thats why you're training now though! -- After you battle a couple matches and can buy more Pokemon, I'll help you pick these, so don't sweat it.

Now, you're presented with two options: You can initiate a switch phase. To do this, simply post the Pokemon you want to switch into battle, with an item equipped, offering your opponent a chance to counter-switch. If I do counter-switch, I'll have to order first, again. If I deny, then you will order first.

Your second option is to go ahead and post orders. Up to you.

Your orders are alright, but there are two main problems I can see with them. One, you're only using one of your three substitutions; you could fill up the other substitutions in the case of Protect, for example, which I could have used to avoid attacks. It's almost always a good idea to sub for "P/E" moves, which stands for "Protective/evasive" moves, and this covers everything from Protect, Detect, and Wide Guard, to Agility (Evasive) and Teleport (Evasive). I would have written the following substitution in order to make the most of your orders: "If P/E move on A2 or A3, then Stockpile and push back actions".

Secondly, Psychic does less damage than Payback in exchange for a slim hax possibility, so I would have used Payback again, myself. Toxic is also a bit poor at this stage of the fight. But thats minor. Otherwise, nice orders. Setting up the speed advantage is always a good plan.

zXX9z66.gif

I could have messed up your orders a lot here, but because of Tailwind, I couldn't quite do all I wanted. Good abuse of the speed boost. However, because there's no way for me to have a substitute in the first action, you should have used that substitution instead to get around Dig, since that messes you up on action 3. Again, having moves like Substitute would help out here so you have at least some way to counter it. Counter would have been really good here too. Your best bet here would've been to use Dodge.

Oh, and thats a good opportunity to talk about universal moves. There are certain moves that every Pokemon can use without having to learn them, such as Dodge, and Chill. Chill, for example, lets a Pokemon gain 12 EN. Dodge uses a formula to make moves used against it more inaccurate, and there are a few more moves that are used in Doubles/Triples. You can find these move at the bottom of <<this list>>.

Good use of Torment. Invalidates my substitution and allows you to gain Speed advantage and order first in the last action. However, you missed the KO on Buneary by just one HP, so you should have used Blaze Kick, Double Kick, or Return to secure the KO before Buneary could land another hit on you.

All in all, for someone who seems to have never touched this before, you're on a good start. However, you have made a lot of typical new player mistakes (That I myself made not too long ago...).

Most of your issues seems to have stemmed from the lack of a good movepool on both of your Pokemon, which makes it really difficult to make good decisions. With the MC you just obtained, I very highly recommend you purchase staple moves such as Protect and Substitute, as well as certain powerful moves such as Destiny Bond on Drifloon, and Counter on Chimchar. These moves are extremely good to have in nearly every battle, so you should prioritize ASAP. I can help you with movepools later on.

You need to identify and aim at moves that mess you up the most when ordering first. Dig, Encore, and Taunt are good examples of very dangerous moves, and if you're threatened in ANY way by these moves, you need to make substitutes for them. One of the best skills a battler can use is proper abuse of substitutions (And a lot of people will say it's absolutely the best skill you need). You have a good grasp on how they work, which is a great start.

In your next Battling 101 battle, we'll be using rental Pokemon. I'll post details in our PM.
