"Heya namemaker! I'm Psyco_Josho, and I'm relatively new here, but hopefully I can show you a few things!
"First, I'll send out Blimp the Colosshale with an Exp. Share."

[NOTE: I only add flavor because I like too. You don't have to do the same necessarily.]

coloshale3.png
@ Exp. Share
"Here I come!"

264.png

"Normally, you would be the first one to do something here as the Match Seeker. Specifically, you would send out your Pokémon and equip it with an item.
"But you don't have any items that you can equip in a Beginner Battle, so I have to post first here!
"In this instance, I need to select a Pokémon first... if I had brought more than one. Then I equip it, and last I give it orders with substitutions."

coloshale3.png

"And fortunately for you, ordering first is not an art he is masterful at."

264.png

"Oh, quiet you."

Blimp:
Bounce ~ Bubble Beam ~ Bounce
IF [Melvin uses a successful Protective/Evasive move], THEN [Chill] AND [push actions back].
IF [Melvin uses Drain Punch when you would use Bubble Beam], THEN [use Dig] AND [push actions back].

namemaker, if you're unsure of how a move would work (because they work quite differently here than in the cartridge games), then you can always check the New Data Audit and ASB Player's Handbook:
NDA: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...pFOW5yRGQxb3NDSmVqRHNxVUE&usp=drive_web#gid=2

Handbook: http://www.smogon.com/forums/thread...nt-not-100-obvious-rules-are-in-here.3488563/

In particular, the move "Bounce" I'm is called a Damaging Evasive Move. These moves have the user go into an evasive stage at 0 Priority, then they strike at -1 Priority, ending their Evasive effects right there. Moves like Dig, Fly and Dive also fall into this category. Colosshale, and its evolution, are particularly good at using these kind of moves.

You are also able to make up to two substitutions in this battle, but since you're ordering second, you don't have to worry about that right now.

"Yup! That's what most orders look like!

"You're also allowed to edit them at any time before Frosty posts the Round. Be careful though - if you edit them while he's reffing, then he probably won't be happy. But that doesn't happen very often anyways.

"It's also too late for me to edit my own orders right now, since you posted yours after I posted first. If I asked nicely to edit my orders based on an honest mistake that would not normally be overlooked, then you would be obliged to allow me to edit my orders, but you wouldn't be forced to do so either.

"Anyways, we'll see the results soon enough..."

Round 1!

And we are on!

On the right side we have Psyco_Josho, a trainer that joined the ranks of ASB not too much time ago. Still he is on the odd situation to be the most experienced one in this battle.

On the left side we have namemaker who is now starting his journey to make a name (oh I crack me up) for himself in the world of Anime Style Battling. Godspeed!

Psyco_Josho sends out Blimp the Colosshale with Exp. Share, which is countered by namemaker's Melvin the Golett. Matchup-wise, Blimp has the type advantage, but Melvin can hit harder thanks to Iron Fist. So it is somewhat even.

The round starts with Blimp the Colosshale spranging up, high enough to avoid being hit by Melvin's Low Sweep. And now it is a good opportunity to show one of the many differences between ASB and ingame: moves like Bounce/Fly/Dive/Dig/etc strike on the same action instead of the next one. Unless it is suspended. Which is my way of saying that the fatness that is Blimp Bounced at Melvin, for good damage.

For the second course action Colosshale sticks around to attack Melvin with a Bubblebeam for decent damage. But that wasn't the best option ever, considering that Melvin managed to hit the Colosshale with a strong Iron Fist-Boosted Thunder Punch, that manages to Paralyze Blimp! That should stop future bounces.

Finally, for the third action, we see a remake of the first one, with the difference that Melvin is faster now (although saying "fast" in regarding to Golett is at the very least weird) and manages to strike before that happens with a fast Mega Punch.

And this wraps up first round! Melvin has less hp, but he managed to get a nice paralysis on Blimp, so it is pretty much even ground!

"Just because you're a beginner doesn't mean I'll go easy on you!"

coloshale3.png

"I'm gonna show you just how Dark-tpes fight!"

Blimp:
Protect ~ Sucker Punch ~ Bubble Beam

IF [fully Paralyzed on Action 1], THEN [push actions back].
(sub)

And here's a bit of a more confusing prospect: Chance Substitutions. These are the only substitutions allowed when ordering second (that I'm aware of), and call for different actions to be taken depending on a percent chance of something happening. This usually looks like Paralysis (like here), Confusion, Infatuation, Flinching, the secondary effect of a move occurring (when it's not 100% likely to occur) and even Critical Hits (maybe, I think).

By the way, let me talk about the phrase "push actions back". It means that my action queue would turn from this:

Protect ~ Sucker Punch ~ Bubble Beam

To this:

[Paralyzed and could not move] ~ Protect ~ Sucker Punch

This is a very useful action that prevents your foe from taking total advantage of you when you order first, or when there's a chance that things might not go your way.

There's also an action called "push actions forward", which does the opposite. I suppose there are uses for it, but I've never seen it used.

Round 2!

Melvin adopted an offensive stance, while Blimp opted for the strategic approach.

On the first action, Blimp erected a protective barrier and managed to escape death by Drain Punch. Well not death per se, just pain.

On the second action, the Colosshale used Sucker Punch to attack the Golett right before Melvin hit with a Thunder Punch.

Finally, hax happened. Not the one you would expect though. Melvin attacked with Rock Slide, probably expecting the nice flinch. Except that Rock Slide missed and left golett wide open to Blimp's Bubble Beam.

whooops.

Melvin is in a tough position right now. Can he make it? We will see soon enough.

Oh right. I almost forgot about this. And by the way, that last sentence just displayed my super promptness that I have for ASB. This isn't normal for other players, so don't expect it.

Remember: Patience is a virtue. There will be times when other people will wait on you patiently, so return the favor!

[note: I wrote those two above parts yesterday, when it would have made more sense than it did now]

264.png

"Alright! If all goes well, then we have this bagged!"

coloshale3.png

"That's not too big of an 'if' this time! Alright!"

Blimp:
Bite ~ Bubble Beam ~ Bite

IF [fully Paralyzed], THEN [push actions back].
IF [Melvin uses Drain Punch], THEN [Sucker Punch + Sucker Punch that instance].

And now we move to a more complicated matter of ASB: Combinations.

This is one of the unique points of Smogon's ASB. You can combine two similar (or at least "compatible", depending on how the ref sees it) moves, or do a same-move combination that does more than twice the damage of the normal move!

A complete guide to combinations can be found in this post of the ASB Player's Handbook: http://www.smogon.com/forums/thread...vious-rules-are-in-here.3488563/#post-4843557 If all the info there seems overwhelming, then don't worry. You'll learn more over time.

Round 3!

Nearing a defeat, Melvin doesn't seem to be ready to give up. On the first action, it managed to erect a barrier to protect itself against Blimp's vicious Bite, so it could, on the following action, summon a mighty Rock Slide that flinched the Colosshale!

On the final action both traded powerful blows, with Golett attacking with Earthquake while Blimp countered with another Bite.

Melvin's courage and guts are admirable, but Blimp is no longer paralysed and the Golett has very little health. The battle is nearing its end...

It's worth noting that using a Combination will force you to Cool Down for one Action. This is the same as when you use a move like Hyper Beam in the real games. Using a move like Hyper Beam in ASB will only cause you to become Sluggish (because most Combinations are better than Hyper Beam and its clones).
