LC Bellsprout

[OVERVIEW]

Bellsprout's Chlorophyll-boosted Speed along with Sleep Powder to work around its checks and Weather Ball to give it strong coverage make it extremely dangerous, and the new generation's addition of Poisonium Z and nerf to Gale Wings only made it stronger. However, Bellsprout's bulk is far from great, and it is almost useless outside of sun teams.

[SET]
name: Praise The Sun (Sun Sweeper)
move 1: Solar Beam
move 2: Sludge Bomb
move 3: Weather Ball
move 4: Sleep Powder / Growth
item: Poisonium Z / Eviolite / Life Orb
ability: Chlorophyll
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 76 Def / 196 SpA / 36 SpD / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Solar Beam is Bellsprout's main STAB move, dishing out devastating neutral hits due to its 120 Base Power. Sludge Bomb hits Spritzee and Snover on the switch and can KO checks such as Ponyta and Vullaby when used with Poisonium Z. Weather Ball allows Bellsprout to hit the Steel-types that wall it otherwise, and Sleep Powder lets Bellsprout beat a lot of its checks. Growth can be used over Sleep Powder to make Bellsprout extremely powerful.

Set Details
========

196 Special Attack EVs and a Modest nature maximize Bellsprout's offensive power. 196 Speed EVs allow Bellsprout to outspeed 17 Speed Choice Scarf users, but a Timid nature can be used to outspeed 18 Speed Choice Scarf users such as Gastly and Doduo that otherwise check Bellsprout, as well as common Shell Smash users such as Omanyte and Shellder. For item choices, Poisonium Z gives Bellsprout a one-use move that can eliminate a check such as Ponyta or Vullaby, Eviolite makes Bellsprout bulky enough to switch in on a resisted attack, and Life Orb can be used to make Bellsprout stronger at the cost of longevity and bulk. Chlorophyll is a must, doubling Bellsprout's Speed in the sun. All remaining EVs are placed into bulk.

Usage Tips
========

Bellsprout is very frail and should be pivoted in when using a Life Orb or Poisonium Z set. Eviolite makes Bellsprout bulky enough to switch in on a resisted attack. Sleep Powder should be used on foes that Bellsprout cannot usually beat. Growth should be used on predicted switches and sleeping foes. Solar Beam should be used with caution against opposing weather teams to avoid locking Bellsprout into a two-turn move.

Team Options
========

Vulpix's access to Drought allows it to set up sun easily, making it the best teammate for Bellsprout. Z-Sunny Day Ponyta can set up sun and reliably beat Focus Sash Abra after its Speed boost. These two can also beat Steel-types. Focus Sash Diglett can beat Focus Sash Abra, Ponyta, and Steel-types and if it runs Reversal, Munchlax. Mareanie, Chinchou, and Mudbray handle Fire-types, something that sun teams need to be able to do, making them great offensive partners as well. Chinchou's Electric-type moves also allow it to handle Vullaby for non-Poisonium Z Bellsprout. Knock Off users such as Pawniard, Mienfoo, and Timburr also make for good teammates thanks to their ability to knock off Eviolites and make it easier for Bellsprout to break walls. Mienfoo and Timburr also beat Munchlax with Drain Punch.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Sucker Punch can be used to hit Abra outside of sun and KO weakened foes, but Sludge Bomb and Sleep Powder usually offer more utility. Sunny Day gives Bellsprout a way to set up its own sun at the cost of Sleep Powder. Giga Drain sacrifices power to give Bellsprout longevity as well as make it more useful outside of sun. Knock Off allows Bellsprout to remove Eviolites and makes breaking walls later on easier.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Weather Setters**: Weather-setting Pokemon can replace the sun with a weather that benefits them and makes Bellsprout's Chlorophyll inactive. Amaura locks Bellsprout into Solar Beam and OHKOes it, making it the best weather check to Bellsprout. Hippopotas is also a hard check, as it can switch in on any of Bellsprout's moves. Snover can set up hail to nullify sun, but it fears Sludge Bomb.

**Focus Sash Abra**: Focus Sash Abra can endure Bellsprout's first hit and OHKO it with Psychic, but loses to Sleep Powder.

**Bulky Fire-types**: Fire-types resist all of Bellsprout's moves except for Sludge Bomb, which moderately bulky Pokemon can take a hit from. Bellsprout's best hope is to put them to sleep or switch out. Poisonium Z sets can OHKO the vast majority of Fire-types.

**Chespin**: Chespin's typing and ability Bulletproof make it immune to Sleep Powder, Sludge Bomb, and Weather Ball, forcing Bellsprout to use Solar Beam or switch. However, Poisonium Z sets can OHKO Chespin.

**Fast Choice Scarf Users**: Choice Scarf Doduo and, to a lesser extent, Gastly outspeed and check Bellsprout. Doduo can OHKO Bellsprout and Gastly can 2HKO it with Sludge Bomb,but Bellsprout can beat Gastly if it lands Sleep Powder. Timid Bellsprout can outspeed both.

**Generally Bulky Pokemon**: Munchlax walls Bellsprout and strikes back with Fire Punch or Body Slam. Vullaby takes a hit, and Overcoat Vullaby is immune to Sleep Powder and OHKOes Bellsprout with Brave Bird, but Bellsprout can beat Vullaby with Z-Sludge Bomb.

Sets:

Your current spread has over 508 EVs; just remove the 36 HP EVs and that'll be good.

I'd recommend making two different sets: one for Sleep Powder Bellsprout, and one for Growth Bellsprout. Due to Fletchling getting nerfed, Growth is much more viable than it was last generation, since it can't be scared out consistently by priority Acrobatics. The reason I'm recommending a different set is because the two have different spreads and play slightly differently. Sleep Powder Bellsprout should be played offensively and should always run Modest, while Growth Bellsprout plays a bit more conservatively so that it can set up later in the match with ease and ought to run Timid, so that it's not outpaced by Choice Scarf Doduo or Gastly. It should also be noted that Timid outspeeds Shell Smash users like Omanyte and Shellder.

Set details:

Mention that holding an Eviolite lets you switch in Bellsprout versus water types (excluding Life Orb Staryu) and fighting types, which is useful so that Bellsprout doesn't always need to be pivoted into play.

Team Options:

Pivots are important for getting Bellsprout safely into play, especially if Bellsprout's item is Life Orb.

Mention that Diglett also beats Ponyta, which can be an annoyance for Bellsprout.

Fire-type checks and counters are important for a sun team to have, so Mareanie and Mudbray make good partners as well.

Other Options:

If you do take my advice and make two different sets, remove mentions Growth from this section.

Poisinium-Z is a good option for teams that want a one-time high BP move that rivals the wallbreaking power of Bellsprout's growth set, while also keeping the utility of Sleep Powder. For instance, Acid Downpour OHKOs Ponyta after rocks. While it just misses the OHKO versus Eviolite Vullaby after rocks, it OHKOs Berry Juice Vullaby and Z-Mirror Move Vullaby after rocks.

Checks and Counters:

I don't think Dragon types are relevant enough in the meta to deserve a specific mention in here.

Also, if you do take my suggestion about the two different sets, fast choice scarf users like Doduo and Gastly fail to outspeed Growth Bellsprout, so make not that they only check Sleep Powder Bellsprout.

Make not that opposing weather setters like Amaura and Hippopotas can freely switch into Bellsprout. They resist weather ball and sludge bomb and force Solar Beam to take two turns to complete. Other hail setters like Alolan-Vulpix and Snover can also come in after a kill or even on a predicted Solar Beam, though that is risky because the two take big damage from Sludge Bomb.

mostly agree with dokas changes but i dont think there should be two sets
I would slash growth with sleep powder and timid with modest because of the prevalence of 18 speed scarfers (doduo, gastly)

[OVERVIEW]
  • Talk about Sleep Powder and limit the rest of the move descriptions to "it has really good coverage in Weather Ball" or something like that
  • Talk about how Fletchling's nerf really helps Bellsprout
[SET]
  • It should probably be ordered Solar Beam / Sludge Bomb / Weather Ball / fourth move, cause the attacks are most important on this set.
[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
=======
  • Reorder them to the new set order
  • Talk about how Weather Ball is a Fire-type move and list Steel-types as its primary target.
Set Details
========
  • Timid is the first option listed on the set, so it should be described as the default, not as just an option. Talk about it when you talk about Speed EVs.
  • You have to talk about Eviolite. I'd list it when you describe the purpose of the defensive EVs (which is just to bulk up).
Team Options
========
  • Be more general with your categories, and separate them by purpose. For example, Vulpix and Z-Sunny Day Pony are good partners because they set Sun, Diglett is kinda in its own category (and removes Steels!), and Mareanie and Mudbray are checks to Fire-types.
  • Bellsprout needs Knock Off support. Some good partners for this are Pawniard, which also resists Flying, and Mienfoo, which can take on Steel-type Pokemon.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============
  • This one's good!
Checks and Counters
===================
  • The biggest check to Bellsprout is Hippopotas, which can switch in on literally anything Bellsprout can do. You should put Opposing Weather Setters as the top category of Checks and feature Hippopotas prominently.
  • Change Strong Focus Sash Users to Focus Sash Abra; it's unique enough to warrant its own category, and Diglett is not gonna show up as a "check" unless it's a pretty poorly built team.
  • The Fast Choice Scarf Users section should be modified to make known that it only applies to Modest Bellsprout, because Timid Bellsprout outspeeds 18 Speed scarfers under Sun.
  • Combine Munchlax and Vullaby into "Generally Bulky Pokemon" and feature those two prominently.
QC 2/3! Good Job!

Star told me in a profile post that he meant Modest / Timid rather than Timid / Modest

Changes implemented! I'm going to write it up now.
Just saying please change the title to Quality Assurence instead of Copyediting. Copyediting means it's for GP.

op edit: did this

Vanillish Wafer after two QC checks, you write it up, but you still need one more before moving on to GP. Please delete your post in the GP queue for now.

Overview:
- This is really short and needs to be expanded upon. Include information about its bulk, near uselessness outside of sun, anything else you can think of that's important.

Set:
- I think Poisonium Z should be moved out of OO and put as the first slash. It's really good and definitely should be on the set, but I'd like more opinions on where it should be slashed. mad0ka Corporal Levi Star

Moves:
- Talk about moves in the order that they are on the set, i.e. mention Sludge Bomb before Weather Ball.
- Since we're adding Poisonium Z to the set, mention using it with Sludge Bomb to hit many of Bellsprout's would be checks like Vullaby and Ponyta

Set Details:
- Add info about Poisonium Z here too

Usage Tips:
- Talk about good opportunities to use Growth
- Be careful using Solar Beam against teams with a Hail or Sand setter as it can lock Bellsprout into a two-turn move and leave it vulnerable.

Team Options:
- This is formatted incorrectly, it should look just like the other sections and be in paragraphs.
- Add teammates that can take on Bulky Vullaby and Munchlax sets well as Bellsprout often struggles with it.

Other Options:
- Explain why Sucker Punch would be used (hitting abra outside of sun, generally useful as a priority move)
- Remove Poisonium Z from here
- Add Knock Off, Sunny Day, and Giga Drain and talk about their uses

Checks and Counters:
- Add Amaura to weather setters, it's a harder weather check than Hipoopotas as it can KO Bellsprout if it locks it into Solar Beam. Modify the hippo description accordingly.
- Mention Abra losing to Sleep Powder
- Add using Poisonium Z Sludge Bomb to Fire-types, Chespin, and Vullaby

I'd really like to read this over again after you implement all this, so I'm going to hold off on giving you your 3rd QC check for now.

Yea I'm looking at calcs for life orb again since I haven't used it in a long time and poisonium z seems like the better first slash.

Team Options and Other Options should be in paragraph format. Make Poisonium Z the first item slash. In checks and counters, some Vullabys use Weak Armor, so specifically mention Overcoat Vullabys being immune to Sleep Powder.

After those things, you can send this to GP! QC 3/3

Sobi

Banned deucer.
Hope you don't mind an amcheck.

Small piece of advice: try to be as detailed as you can. For example:

Mareanie, Chinchou, and Mudbray handle Fire-types, something that sun teams need to be able to do, making them great offensive partners as well. Chinchou also handles Vullaby.

The blue sentence speaks about Pokemon that handle Fire-types. You then talk about Chinchou handling Vullaby, but do not mention why that's relevant. I'm not saying that every sentence has to link back to previous one, but I mean that you should aim to leave the reader with no questions. Looking at the second sentence, I'm thinking "why is Chinchou handling Vullaby important" and "how does Chinchou handle Vullaby", so I think you should try and develop that sentence.

You're also lacking some key information in Set Details; you need to speak about all aspects of the set (bar moves), so all the EVs, the nature, and the ability. You've done most, but not all, so be sure to add some of the missing stuff in.

With that said, if you have any questions, VM me. Hope this helped ^_^
[OVERVIEW]

Bellsprout's Chlorophyll-boosted Speed along with Sleep Powder to work around its checks and Weather Ball (does Weather Ball also help it get around its checks? If so, use "with Sleep Powder and Weather Ball...") gives it strong coverage, (add comma) making it extremely dangerous, and the new generation bringing Poisonium Z and the nerf to Gale Wings only made it stronger. However, Bellsprout is not without its downsides. Its Bellsprout's bulk is far from great, (add comma) and Bellsprout it is almost useless outside of sun.
