Overview
########

Bellsprout is undoubtedly one of the best Chlorophyll sweepers in Little Cup, which makes it almost mandatory on sun teams. While other Chlorophyll sweepers such as Oddish and Bulbasaur have more bulk, Bellsprout is a better choice overall thanks to Weather Ball. In sunlight, Weather Ball effectively turns into a 150 Base Power Fire-type move, which is great against Steel-types that could otherwise be a huge problem for Bellsprout. Weather Ball also lets Bellsprout deal with Croagunk and Grass-types such as Foongus and Ferroseed. Bellsprout also has access to Sleep Powder, which is a great move to allow it to avoid Sucker Punch while also crippling a potential counter or check. However, Bellsprout isn't very bulky, meaning that if it can't OHKO the opposing Pokemon, it can in many situations get KOed back. Bellsprout also suffers from the prominence of Fletchling, which can OHKO Bellsprout with its priority Acrobatics. Overall, while Bellsprout has its flaws, it is still one of the best Chlorophyll sweepers and should therefore always be considered when building a sun team.

nature: Modest

Moves
========

Solar Beam, with 120 Base Power, is a mandatory move on any sun sweeper, and hits most threats very hard. Sleep Powder is a very important move as well, as it helps Bellsprout bypass certain counters and eases prediction, while also helping to mitigate Bellsprout's vulnerability to Sucker Punch. Weather Ball is a great coverage move, effectively turning into a 150 Base Power Fire-type move under the sun, and it allows Bellsprout to deal with Steel-types, Grass-types, and Croagunk. Sludge Bomb is a reliable secondary STAB move that isn't reliant on weather, hitting Grass- and Fairy-types very hard. Growth can be used, but it is a risky move to use on a Pokemon as frail as Bellsprout. However, the payoff is very high if Bellsprout manages to pull it off.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread is used to maximize Bellsprout's sweeping capabilities, and the leftover EVs are used in HP and Defense to allow Bellsprout to take resisted physical attacks better. Eviolite makes Bellsprout fairly bulky and therefore capable of switching in on resisted or weak hits. Life Orb, on the other hand, lets Bellsprout OHKO certain threats in exchange for the ability to switch in on certain attacks.

Usage Tips
========

Due to Bellsprout's low defenses, it should only be switched in on resisted or weak attacks, even if Eviolite is used. Sleep Powder should always be used in situations where Bellsprout cannot OHKO the opposing Pokemon but can be OHKOed in return. If the opponent switches, Sleep Powder will provide a free turn for Bellsprout to set up Growth, making it capable of OHKOing most of the metagame with Solar Beam, or letting it just hit the sleeping foe hard with Solar Beam, if Sludge Bomb is being used. Sleep Powder also functions as a way for Bellsprout to escape on the last turn of sunlight.

Team Options
========

Sunny Day support is mandatory for Bellsprout. Vulpix is the most obvious choice for this, able to automatically set up eight turns of sunlight with Drought if Heat Rock is used. Knock Off users help Bellsprout clean late game by removing Eviolite from opposing Pokemon. Pawniard is therefore a good teammate, and it also has good type synergy with Bellsprout. As Fletchling is able to outpace and OHKO Bellsprout thanks to priority Acrobatics, a check to Fletchling is very important. Archen, Magnemite, and Pawniard are all good choices for this role.

Other Options
########

Giga Drain can be used instead of Solar Beam, but it suffers from a significant drop in power. Though mostly outclassed by a special set, a physical set of Power Whip / Knock Off / Sleep Powder / Swords Dance can be used. Bellsprout can also use a Choice Scarf, which allows it to reach 21 Speed even without sun, but this is rarely recommended.

Checks & Counters
########

**Special Walls**: Munchlax with Sleep Talk is one of the best counters to Bellsprout. It can shrug off any unboosted attack and OHKO back with Fire Punch or 2HKO Bellsprout with Body Slam. Porygon is also a good answer to Bellsprout, as it can paralyze Bellsprout with Thunder Wave while not getting hurt too badly by Solar Beam.

**Abra**: Abra can survive any hit from Bellsprout thanks to Focus Sash and OHKO Bellsprout with Psychic. However, it runs the risk of being put to sleep. Abra with Protect also has the ability to stall out sun turns in a pinch.

**Grass-types**: Even though most Grass-types are dealt with by Weather Ball or Sludge Bomb, there are two exceptions. Snover removes sunlight and therefore outpaces and OHKOes Bellsprout with Blizzard. Chespin's ability, Bulletproof, makes it immune to Sludge Bomb and Weather Ball, meaning only a resisted Solar Beam from Bellsprout can damage Chespin. Both Snover and Chespin is also immune to Sleep Powder.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types are a huge problem for Bellsprout. Vullaby has great special bulk and can therefore tank any unboosted hit from Bellsprout and OHKO back. It is also immune to Sleep Powder thanks to its ability, Overcoat. Fletchling is one of the best offensive checks to Bellsprout thanks to priority Acrobatics, which OHKOes Bellsprout.

**Bulky Fire-types**: Bulkier Fire-types such as Houndour and Ponyta can be a pain for Bellsprout. They resist Solar Beam and Weather Ball, and can easily survive an unboosted Sludge Bomb and OHKO Bellsprout back with a sun-boosted Fire-type move. Ponyta is also able to deal with Archen, Magnemite, and Pawniard, all of which are very important checks to Fletchling.

**Faster Choice Scarf users**: Faster Choice Scarf users such as Misdreavus, Gastly, and Doduo all outspeed Bellsprout. Misdreavus and Gastly can KO Bellsprout if it has taken some prior damage, while Doduo is able to OHKO Bellsprout at full health with Brave Bird.

**Dragon-types**: Dragon-types resist all of Bellsprout's attacks except Sludge Bomb. Dratini is especially problematic for Bellsprout, as it has two abilities that let it deal with Sleep Powder.

In the Overview, change "Under Sun, Weather Ball effectively turns into a 150 Base Power Fire-type move, which is great for Pawniard, who could otherwise be a huge problem for Bellsprout." to mention Steel-types in general. With the exception of Aron and Shieldon, every one of them resists Grass and they're all immune to poison.

Add Abra to the Checks and Counters section. It can tank any hit with its Sash, and then OHKO with Psychic. Sleep Powder is there, but it also means that you absolutely cannot waste it or mispredict with it if you need Bellsprout to sweep. Also, Abra with Protect have the ability to stall out sun turns in a pinch; that specifically has helped me many times over the course of the last suspect test.

Otherwise, I believe this is good to move on to GP.

Bellsprout also has access to Sleep Powder, which is a great move to alleviate its weakness to Sucker Punch while also crippling a potential counter or check. However, Bellsprout has its flaws. As mentioned previously, Bellsprout isn't very bulky, meaning that if it can't OHKO, it can in many situations get KOed back. Moreover, the nerf to weather in this generation really hurts Bellsprout, limiting its ability to sweep. Bellsprout also suffers from Fletchling's prominence as a priority Acrobatics user, being able to OHKO Bellsprout. Overall, while Bellsprout has its flaws, Bellsprout is still the best offensive Chlorophyll sweeper, and should therefore definitely be considered while building a Sun team.

Weather Ball is a great coverage move, effectively turning into a 150 Base Power Fire-type move under Sun, and allows Bellsprout to deal with Steel- and Grass-types, while also preventing Bellsprout from being walled by Croagunk. Sludge Bomb is a reliable secondary STAB, and isn't reliant on Sun, in contrast to Weather Ball and Solar Beam, while also hitting Grass- and Fairy-types very hard. Growth can be used, but is a risky move to use on a frail Pokemon such as Bellsprout, however, the reward is very high if you get able to pull it off.

Set Details
========

The following EV spread is used to maximize Bellsprout's sweeping capabilities, with the leftover EVs used in HP and Defense to take resisted physical attacks better. Both Eviolite and Life Orb have their positive and negative sides. Eviolite makes Bellsprout fairly bulky, and therefore capable of switching in on resisted or weak hits. Life Orb on the other side, lets Bellsprout OHKO certain threats, but loses the ability to switch in on certain attacks.

Usage Tips
========

Due to Bellsprout's lacking defenses, only switch Bellsporut in on resisted or weak attacks, even if Eviolite is used. When Bellsprout is brought in, and there is a possibility it can be OHKOed by the opposing Pokemon, while not being able to OHKO back, always use Sleep Powder. If the opponent switches, Sleep Powder will give a free turn for Bellsprout to set up Growth and OHKO almost the whole metagame with Solar Beam. Sleep Powder also functions as a way to escape on the last turn of Sun.

Team Options
========

Any Pokemon that can set up an extended amount of Sunny Day is mandatory. Vulpix with Drought is the most obvious choice, being able to automatically set up 8 turns of Sun if Heat Rock is used. Knock Off users also helps Bellsprout clean late game by knocking off the opponents Eviolites. Pawniard is therefore a good teammate, and also has a good typing synergy with Bellsprout. Fletchling is able to outpace and OHKO Bellsprout thanks to priority Acrobatics, and therefore forces Bellsprout to switch out, a check to Fletchling is therefore very important. Archen, Magnemite, and Pawniard are all good choices.

Other Options
########

Giga Drain can be used instead of Solar Beam, but loses significantly out on power. Even though mostly outclassed by the special set, a physical Bellsprout set can be used with Power Whip / Knock Off / Sleep Powder / Swords Dance. Bellsprout can also use a Choice Scarf set since it hits 14 Speed, but it is rarely recommended.

Checks & Counters

**Abra**: Abra can survive all hits from Bellsprout thanks to Focus Sash, and OHKO Bellsprout with Psychic. However, Abra can be dealt with thanks to Sleep Powder, but that also means you can't mispredict and waste your Sleep Powder on the wrong Pokemon. Abra with Protect also has the ability to stall out sun turns in a pinch.

**Grass-types**: Even though most Grass-types are dealt with by using either Weather Ball or Sludge Bomb, there are two exceptions. Snover removes sun, and therefore outpace and OHKOs Bellsprout with Blizzard. Chespin is also a huge problem, because of its ability Bulletproof. Bulletproof makes Chespin immune to Sludge Bomb and Weather Ball, meaning only Solar Beam can hit Chespin, which is resisted.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types are a huge problem for Bellsprout. Vullaby has great Special bulk, and can therefore tank any unboosted hit from Bellsprout and OHKO back, and is also immune to Sleep Powder thanks to its ability Overcoat. Fletchling is one of the best offensive checks to Bellsprout, thanks to priority Gale Wings, which OHKOs Bellsprout.

**Bulky Fire-types**: Bulkier Fire-types such as Houndour and Ponyta can be a pain for Bellsprout. They resist Solar Beam and Weather Ball, and can easily survive a unboosted Sludge Bomb and OHKO Bellsprout back with a Sun-boosted Fire-type move. Ponyta is also able to deal with Archen, Magnemite, and Pawniard, all of which are very important checks for Fletchling.

**Faster Choice Scarf users**: Faster Choice Scarf users like Misdreavus, Gastly, and Doduo all outspeed Bellsprout. Misdreavus and Gastly can OHKO Bellsprout if it has taken some prior damage, while Doduo is able to OHKO Bellsprout at full health thanks to STAB Brave Bird.
