Core Analysis Workshop

Pokemon teams rely on offensive and defensive synergy to function. Cores of pokemon are units within teams that are built specifically to take advantage of these synergies between pokemon. Many teams are built around such cores. The premise of this thread is to analyze cores by discussing threats to them and then potential partners. Hopefully this exercise helps you with your teambuilding process.

Procedure:


2 Pokemon cores

1. I will post a core comprised of 2 pokemon.

2. For the first 3 days after that post, posters will have the chance to post threats to the core.

3. After the the first 3 days are up, posters will nominate potential partners to the core, keeping in mind the threats previously posted. This will last for 4 days.

4. When the week is up, I will choose the top 3 partners to the core and put them in the OP. This is a subjective procedure so I will most likely consult other players – but not ones who made nominations in the thread. Please don’t be insulted if your nomination doesn’t make the OP. I will probably add in a Hall of Fame if this thread goes on for long enough.

3 Pokemon cores

1. I will post a core comprised of 3 pokemon.

2. For half the week, posters will have a chance to post threats to that core.

3. After the time period is up, I will choose the top threats to the core and put them into the OP. We will not discuss partners for 3 mon cores.

Rules:

1. Please follow up your reservations in a timely fashion. I will allow 3 hours after a reservation to make the post. After the 3 hours is up, if you have not made your post then someone else may reserve that pokemon.

2. When the threats nominations period ends, I will no longer accept threats and will only be accepting partners to the core.

3. Please post only pokemon that are viable in RU. This means they should be listed on the viability rankings thread.

4. Each poster may only nominate one partner to a core. I would prefer you only post one threat as well but if many threats have been posted since your first post I may allow you to post a second threat.

5. When posting either a threat or a partner, explain yourself. Calcs are not necessary but please list more reasons than something simple like type synergy. Be descriptive so that other posters and I can fully understand your reasoning behind your nomination. Also please list a full set of the pokemon including its item, full moveset, EV spread, and nature.

6. When nominating partners, please post one moveset and EV spread. I'd prefer you didn't use slashes much just because this should be treated as a teambuilding exercise. Obviously I will be more lenient regarding slashes on threats.

7. Please be respectful to others :)

Clarifications Regarding Threats & Partners:

A threat to the core must check or counter at least one member and cannot be countered by the other. A threat does not necessarily need to be able to switch into both members of the core, but it should be difficult/annoying to switch into for the members of the core. Of course, the biggest threats counter both members.

When nominating partners, you are allowed to make suggested changes to the current sets of the members of the core.

Ok so let's begin with the last core posted in the old thread which was Slowking + Mega Aboma.
Pretty stanadard core both covering each other weaknesses almost perfectly. These two can also run varieties of sets that can help each other out like Offensive Trick Room Slowking can make Mega Aboma faster thanks to Trick Room also both still checks a pretty good chunk of the metagame.

Houndoom @ Life Orb
Ability: Flash Fire

Houndoom has the potential to KO both Pokemon and even boost using Nasty Plot, since it will force switches to occur, making it a threatening wall-breaker for the foe. Here's another set Houndoom can run, and prove to be equally as troublesome for the core:

With Pursuit and maximum investment in Attack, Houndoom can Pursuit trap Slowking and while not KOing Slowking, it will cripple it, making it unable to switch in more efficiently because the HP drop could be too much for Regenerator to handle.

Tangrowth @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpA / 184 Spe

- Leaf Storm

- Sludge Bomb / Hidden Power [Fire]

Tangrowth on the other hand, can switch into Slowking, barring Fire Blast, and can KO it in return. It can also KO Mega Abomasnow with Focus Blast, and the Speed EVs are meant so that it can outspeed most pre-mega Abomasnows. The best part about Tangrowth is that it can force a lot of switches and hit a wider range of Pokemon due to its amazing coverage.

Durant can't switch in very well on Slowking or Abomasnow's attacks, but cleanly KOs both with CB X-Scissor, just don't miss D: Other Durant sets threaten this core just as much as CB. It's possible to use something like Hones Claws and take advantage of the switch to boost up, or SubPass to take advantage of the same thing. Taking attacks from Durant isn't always fun, so once the little bug finds the opportunity to come in on these two, something is going to take a good chunk of damage.

Scrafty @ Lum Berry
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Heavily scares both members of the core with Knock Off and HJK, respectively. Scrafty can threaten out Slowking and Abomasnow, and use the opportunity to DD. If they decide to stay in, Scrafty's bulk lets it take an attack from both members if needed. Abomasnow's attacks hurt much more, but max SpA Slowking's Scald does 39.1 - 46.4%. Because you can circumvent possible burns with Lum Berry, DDing on it is relatively safe.

Major threat to the core thanks to its coverage and good damage output. Knock off and pursuit greatly annoy slowking, putting it into a tough position everytime this mon gets a safe switch-in and low kick donks mega abomasnow since he is so heavy. Watch out for this when using these 2.

Eelektross @ Assault Vest
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA 8 Atk 248 HP
Quiet Nature

Eelektross's amazing coverage, ability, and decent bulk make it a pretty big threat to this core. Eel switches in to just about any move Slowking has, and doesn't necessarily mind the potential scald burn either. Knock Off does a lot of damage to Slowking as well as remove its item, hindering some of its usefulness. Volt switch also does a lot of damage and also can give some momentum in a switch advantage, and giga drain does a decent amount while restoring a lot of HP from Slowking's base 95 HP stat. Eelektross switches in to Mega Abomasnow's moves (minus Blizzard) and even with a minus nature in speed outspeeds most Mega Abomasnow sets and OHKOes with flamethrower. Eelektross is going to prove to be a big asset on a lot of bulky offense and balance teams for being able to take on this amazing core.

Ability: Reckless

- Sucker Punch / Head Smash / Sleep Talk

Emboar is a great partner to Abomasnow and Slowking because not only can it check the threats to the core, it can also form a nice Fire-Water-Grass core. Flare Blitz hits insanely hard with Reckless, letting it beat Durant and Eelektross in conjunction with Choice Scarf. Superpower is a great STAB that can revenge kill Scrafty and Houndoom, and is also a switch-in to them, given if they used their Dark-type moves. It also can counter Sneasel and also KO it, rendering it at the mercy of its power. Wild Charge is a nice move to hit Water-types that usually switch into Emboar, and it can aid Abomasnow's clean as well. Sucker Punch can be used as a nice priority move in order to beat faster threats, or at least damage them to fall into Ice Shard range, while Head Smash also hits hard, but takes away half of the damage dealt. Sleep Talk let's it switch into Spores and still not lose offensive prowess.

Ability: Speed Boost

Modest Nature

Being one of RU's best cleaners, Sharpedo needs no introduction. Standard special attacking variants threaten this core heavily. After a Speed Boost, which you can safely get with Protect, you're faster than Accelgor and Scarf Tyrantrum. From there, Accelgor dies to Hydro Pump (102.6 - 121.9%), and Tyrantrum is hit for a clean KO with Ice Beam (112.4 - 133.1%). You can't OHKO Meloetta with Dark Pulse (70.9 - 84.7%). So, you will need some prior damage to get the job done, which isn't too hard to provide with some support from hazards. Alternatively, you can run Crunch with a Mild nature to have a 75% chance of killing Meloetta outright, but that isn't entirely necessary.

Pretty difficult core to find something it just dumps on it but still struggles with a couple of mons. One of them being:

Easily switch into and beats 2 members of the core and can beat tyrantrum since iron head has a 68.8% chance to OHKO after stealth rock with iron head and esca has to be below 75% for tyrantrum to have a decent chance to kill. This can get worn down rather quickly but it is a huge pain for the core in question.

Durant, while it can't exactly switch in on Accelgor's or Meloetta's Focus Blast or a Head Smash after rocks, can outspeed and OHKO every member of this core with its STAB moves.

One of my favorite sets all around in this tier, and a pretty big threat to this core. Accelgor being one of the few mons that is so fast it can outspeed scarf medicham. Life orb bug buzz does 76% min so medicham has to be healthy in order to just not fall apart. The aero in this core has no recovery and a -spdef nature so focus blast does a ton and kills after a round of LO and SR damage and since virizion is calm mind it can take a hit and LO sludge bomb does pretty solid damage and risk a poison if it attempt to setup.

Since accelgor is not exactly a wallbreaker, it needs some prior damage to beat each member but given the chance it can just clean up the core pretty easily. Watch out for this.

Pretty much any Venusaur set will threaten this core (and any Grass-type in general) but I'll focus on the Life Orb Venusaur set. Venusaur can come in on either member of this core with next to no fear due to Toxic immunity and lack of a real care for Scald burns. From there it can easily fire off any move that's most appropriate for the rest of this core's team, or simply utilize Synthesis to heal off prior damage. Due to Venusaur's Speed, it also outspeeds both members of this core, meaning that they can't pick it off before it can use Synthesis or strike them with its powerful STAB Leaf Storm. The only question with Venusaur is nature + ability. Use Timid with Chlorophyll if you're worried about opposing Sun teams and utilize Modest with Overgrow if you have answers to Sun.

So, if there is something that can just destroy this pair in an instant is this beautiful magnetic monster. Alomomola can do anything besides scald, cant wish against it and thunderbolt does 69% min. Diancie just dies, fair and square. Not much else to say besides that, thankfully to these 2, this mon is pretty uncommon.

Any Sub+Set Up mon could break this core quite easily. Special Virizion is a great Scald absorber who can set a sub freely on Buttfish meanwhile its great special bulk allows it to take 2 Moonblast at +1 (can't switch in on it) and 2OHKOing with Giga Drain recovering HP. Life Orb Has a chance to OHKO after Rocks and 2OHKOs without set-up:

Grass types really mess with this core. Leaf Storm OHKO's Alomomola and does a large number to Diancie as well. On top of that, since neither of these two are going to be KOing Tangrowth in 2 hits, and with Regenerator, Tangrowth can endlessly tank hits from the both of them.

0 SpA Alomomola Scald vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Tangrowth: 37-44 (9.1 - 10.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever
0 SpA Diancie Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Tangrowth: 178-210 (44 - 51.9%) -- 12.5% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Diancie Diamond Storm vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tangrowth: 90-106 (22.2 - 26.2%) -- 10.1% chance to 4HKO

 

[MrShroom]

Rotom-C destroys both of these pokemon with leaf storm. If running a modest nature, Leaf Storm will always score an OHKO on both Alomomola and Diancie after stealth rock, regardless of the item.

252+ SpA Rotom-C Leaf Storm vs. 120 HP / 252+ SpD Alomomola: 458-540 (91.4 - 107.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

The combination of Timid Leaf Storm and -2 SpA Volt Switch will also always KO Alomomola with or without Stealth Rock. The benefit of this being that your can bring in another pokemon essentially for free. Diancie fares a bit better however, taking 95.95% at minimum. A small amount of extra damage in the form of spikes or even just one turn of toxic will make this a guaranteed 2HKO.

252 SpA Rotom-C Leaf Storm vs. 252 HP / 92 SpD Diancie: 240-284 (78.9 - 93.4%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
-2 252 SpA Rotom-C Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 92 SpD Diancie: 33-40 (10.8 - 13.1%) -- possibly the worst move ever
10.8+78.9+12.5-6.25=95.95%

Finally, two times Leaf Storm (so the second one at -2 SpA) will always kill either pokemon, with or without Stealth Rock.
And of course if your run a choice item, tricking it onto one of the members of this core will cripple it for the rest of the match.

Magmortar fits nicely with this core as it checks every mon listed as a threat to this core, as well as unlisted mons like Abomasnow(Mega), Sceptile, and Amoonguss.

Alomomola and Diancie are Pokemon that in RU tend to be found on either balanced teams or stall teams, I personally have been using the core on a stall team, and have noticed that certain Pokemon like Virizion and Tangrowth can give the core a hard time, this along with the fact that Alomomola along with Diancie are spike bait for Roselia brings me to my nomination for Golbat being paired with this core:-

EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 176 Def / 76 SpD
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Brave Bird
- Super Fang/Taunt/Toxic

Golbat helps remove the hazards that tend to be stacked on this rather passive core, and can check mons like Tangrowth and Virizion that threaten the core. The last slot is a toss-up and often shifts between Super Fang/Toxic/Super Fang depending on my mood on the day~. Protip: Pair with something like like Tangrowth(which ironically is also a threat to the core) to check Rotom-Cand possibly add an MLix just cause its so splashable :D
