Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Return
move 3: Knock Off
move 4: Toxic
ability: Early Bird
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly
Moves
========
Brave Bird is Dodrio's main STAB move due to its strength and typing, but it severely wears Dodrio down with recoil damage. Return provides a secondary STAB move that allows Dodrio to hit Electric-types neutrally and does not inflict recoil damage. Knock Off provides good utility by removing the foe's item, allowing Dodrio to cripple Rock- and Steel-types. Toxic also cripples Rock-types along with bulky walls such as Avalugg, but it is a bad move to be locked into.
Set Details
========
The EVs are standard for a fast, physically offensive Pokemon, and Choice Scarf allows Dodrio to revenge kill Pokemon such as Jumpluff and Ninetales. Early Bird is Dodrio's most relevant ability and is useful if Dodrio gets put to sleep.
Usage Tips
========
Dodrio should be used as a revenge killer, as its high Speed boosted by Choice Scarf allows it to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame, but it should not switch into attacks, as it is very frail. Dodrio also has the Speed and power to clean up weakened teams late game. Brave Bird is a fairly safe move to be locked in to, whereas Return can be used if Dodrio is low on HP. If the opponent has a Rock- or Steel-type, or a Pokemon that can easily switch into Dodrio, such as Avalugg, then Knock Off should be used; alternatively, Toxic can be used to cripple non-Steel-type switch-ins
Team Options
========
Ground- and Fighting-types such as Piloswine and Throh beat Rock- and Steel-types that can switch into Dodrio. The former sets up entry hazards, beats Electric-types, and appreciates the removal of Grass-types, while the latter can also beat Ice-types; specifically Avalugg, Sneasel, and Piloswine. Grass-types such as Tangela and Torterra also beat Rock-types, and they have a better matchup against Carracosta and Barbaracle. Water-types such as Poliwrath and Carracosta beat Rock-types, resist Ice, and enjoy the removal of Grass-types. More offensive teammates, such as Tangela and Barbaracle, can apply more pressure to Rock-types, by using double switches, and use them as setup fodder. Due to its weakness to Stealth Rock, Dodrio greatly appreciates entry hazard control from Pokemon such as Avalugg and Armaldo. Defoggers can be used, but Dodrio shares a typing with every Defog user other than Prinplup. Dodrio fits better on offensive teams that need ways to revenge kill fast Pokemon and have strong wallbreakers, such as Simipour and Marowak, that can weaken the opponent's team, allowing Dodrio to clean up. Aurorus and Sneasel can act as bait for Rock- and Steel-types and cripple them with Earth Power and Low Kick, respectively, while Dodrio beats the Fighting-types that threaten them.
