[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to its great defensive typing, Foongus makes for an excellent answer to many of the metagame's top threats, such as Timburr, Snivy, and Chinchou, being able to nullify them for the entire match thanks to its great longevity with Regenerator and Giga Drain. Once in play, Foongus can turn out to be quite a nuisance with its supportive movepool, which most notably contains Spore, and decent offensive presence. However, its only decent defensive stats leave it somewhat vulnerable to lures.

Moves

Spore is almost guaranteed to temporarily eliminate an enemy Pokemon from the match. Sludge Bomb is a fairly threatening STAB move with a handy chance to poison, notably heavily damaging Fairy-types. Giga Drain further increases Foongus's longevity and hits Water-, Rock-, and Ground-types hard. Clear Smog deters various setup sweepers such as Dragon Dance Scraggy and Bulk Up Timburr from boosting. Various Hidden Powers can prevent Foongus from being walled by certain Steel-types; Hidden Power Fighting hits Pawniard hard, Hidden Power Fire 2HKOes Ferroseed, and Hidden Power Ground OHKOes Magnemite if Sturdy is broken. Hidden Power Psychic can also be used to surprise Croagunk.

Set Details
========

The given EVs grant Foongus solid 25 / 21 / 21 bulk after Eviolite; 14 Defense and Special Defense let Foongus gain an extra point from Eviolite. Regenerator is what gives Foongus its niche, making it extremely difficult to wear down. Eviolite is used over other defensive items like Berry Juice because Foongus has access to recovery already with Regenerator. An EV spread of 44 HP / 160 Def / 80 SpA / 160 SpD can also be used, as it still allows Foongus to heal 8 HP with Regenerator and gives it a decent chance to OHKO Doduo with Sludge Bomb after Stealth Rock damage. If Clear Smog is run and the IVs are not reduced by Hidden Power, you can include an extra Speed point as well with a spread of 44 HP / 156 Def / 76 SpA / 156 SpD / 76 Spe.

Usage Tips
========

Try to use Spore on something important. If Foongus is within KO range of a +1 Knock Off from Dragon Dance Scraggy, it may be worth sacrificing Foongus by continuing to use Clear Smog so that Scraggy does not come out of the bout with a Speed boost, unless you have means to deal with a boosted Scraggy. If the opponent has a Vullaby not yet on the field and you're not sure if it has Overcoat, which blocks Spore, Sludge Bomb is the safest move to use, as Vullaby does not appreciate being poisoned; however, if your team is about to be swept by a +2 Nasty Plot or Z-Mirror Move Vullaby, you can sacrifice Foongus by repeatedly using Clear Smog instead. If the opponent allows Staryu to be put to sleep with Spore, there is a good chance that they plan to immediately switch Staryu out afterwards to activate Natural Cure, so using Spore again is an option. If Doduo or Houndour directly switches into Spore, chances are it has Early Bird as its ability, so Foongus should immediately switch out to your check afterward. If a bulky Pokemon such as Skrelp, Munchlax, or Mudbray switches into Spore, it might be a RestTalk variant.

Team Options
========

Though it can fit into offensive teams as well, Foongus is a staple on bulkier teams for its defensive utility and ability to absorb Toxic Spikes while not being weak to Diglett. Due to its typing, Foongus synergizes well with a huge number of other defensive Pokemon, such as Chinchou, Munchlax, Ponyta, and Staryu; they are bulky Pokemon that appreciate Foongus handling some of their checks, while Foongus also likes them dealing with its checks. Foongus can be paired with Slowpoke and Mienfoo to form a Regenerator core that can be incredibly difficult for unprepared teams to break.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Stun Spore can most notably cripple Fire- and Flying-types looking to switch in after one of their teammates has been put to sleep, but Foongus already hits them hard with Sludge Bomb. Synthesis gives Foongus another mode of recovery, but it is generally redundant on top of Regenerator and Giga Drain. Energy Ball is stronger than Giga Drain, but the extra healing Giga Drain offers is usually more useful. A combination of Venoshock and Toxic or Toxic Spikes support is not usually worth the effort, as Foongus does not have the Speed or Special Attack to sweep. Foongus has a good typing and access to Rain Dance, allowing it to fit onto rain teams easily. A fully physical set is not recommended, as Sludge Bomb is generally too good to pass up.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Specially Defensive RestTalk Users**: Munchlax and Skrelp are two common RestTalk users that do not mind Spore and can completely wall Foongus's relatively weak attacks. If Foongus stays in, they can PP stall Foongus by simply not using Sleep Talk when they are asleep.

**Poison- and Steel-types**: Poison- and Steel-types such as Pawniard, Magnemite, Ferroseed, Alolan Grimer, and Croagunk resist or are immune to Foongus's STAB moves. Ferroseed in particular is also immune to Spore. However, they are heavily damaged by the appropriate Hidden Power.

**Psychic-, Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-types**: Once Spore has been used, Psychic-, Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-types, which hit Foongus super effectively, can attempt to switch in. However, they may not enjoy being poisoned by Sludge Bomb; frailer Pokemon may even be outright KOed by it. In particular, Overcoat Vullaby is bulky enough to withstand Sludge Bomb and is immune to Spore, though it dislikes Sludge Bomb's chance to poison.

**Bulletproof**: Chespin and Jangmo-o are immune to Sludge Bomb thanks to Bulletproof and resist Giga Drain; Chespin is also immune to Spore. However, Clear Smog prevents them from attempting to set up with their free turns, and if Chespin does not run Zen Headbutt, it actually risks losing once Synthesis runs out of PP. In addition, neither is considered to be competitively viable.

I wouldn't slash clear smog on spore on the first set because i consider spore to be mandatory cuz it's probably the most threatening move foongus has. I would also mention in usage that it shouldn't be switching into strong physical attackers esp grounds as it has been able to in past generations because 12 def makes it very susceptible to be 2hkod by things like drilbur and mudbray especially with rocks.

Spore is a fantastic support move that allows Foongus to heavily pressure the opponent before it is used. Sludge Bomb is Foongus's mandatory STAB move, heavily damaging the Fairy-types Foongus is checking and being fairly threatening for most switchins switch-ins. Payback usually 2HKOes Calm Mind Gothita, preventing Foongus from being used as setup bait, and allows Foongus to beat Life Orb Gastly in a 1v1. It also has a fair chance to OHKO Choice Scarf Gothita after Stealth Rock damage, which is helpful as Choice Scarf Gothita cannot OHKO a healthy Foongus. Giga Drain is a nice secondary STAB move and also slightly heals Foongus slightly. Clear Smog prevents Foongus from being used as setup bait. Hidden Powers aren't Power isn't recommended as Foongus is already pressed for slots, and they force it forces Foongus to give up an important stat point due to the reduction in IVs, but if they must be run used, an EV spread of 124 HP / 80 Atk / 80 Def / 160 SpD should be used instead.

Set Details
========

The given Attack EVs allow Foongus to usually OHKO Choice Scarf Gothita after Stealth Rock damage and 2HKO Calm Mind Gothita from at full health. The HP EVs let Foongus heal 8 HP from Regenerator (AC) and as well as letting it survive Mienfoo's U-turn into followed by Gothita's Psychic from full health. 14 SpD hits an Eviolite number (AC) and lets Foongus avoid the OHKO from Focus Sash Abra's Psychic after Stealth Rock damage. The combination of HP and SpD allows Foongus to survive Chinchou's or SturdyJuice Magnemite's Volt Switch followed by Gothita's Psychic after Stealth Rock damage; if this is not needed because Foongus is paired with reliable hazard removal, an HP point can be moved to Def Defense for an EV spread of 44 HP / 76 Atk / 156 Def / 76 SpA / 156 SpD. The Defense investment lets Foongus reach an Eviolite number. The SpA Special Attack EVs most notably grant Foongus the chance to OHKO Doduo with Sludge Bomb after Stealth Rock damage, and 2HKO Z-Sunny Day Ponyta from at full health. If Foongus is being used on a Hail or Sand team and you are confident you can get chip damage of 3 HP chip damage on Scarf Gothita before it is sent in to have a good chance to KO with Payback, you could forgo the Attack investment entirely and run an EV spread of 124 HP / 156 Def / 156 SpD for good mixed bulk. Speed is reduced because the other stats are much more important for Foongus's Foongus' role. Eviolite is necessary to avoid key OHKOs and synergizes well with Regenerator. Regenerator allows Foongus to repeatedly check what it needs to is needed to.

Usage Tips
========

Do not use Payback on a predicted Gothita hard switch; its damage is not increased on switches, so Sludge Bomb does nearly as much damage. If Payback is revealed too early, then the Gothita user can simply wait until Foongus is heavily weakened before trapping attempting to trap it. Although you can usually withstand Chinchou's Volt Switch followed by Gothita's Psychic after one layer of entry hazards, be wary of switching into Magnemite's Volt Switch because it may be an Analytic variant, which will boost Volt Switch's damage enough to put you in range of Gothita's Psychic after hazards hazard damage. If you manage to keep Foongus healthy and hazards off of your side of the field but on theirs, Foongus is would be able to tank a Mienfoo U-turn followed by a Choice Scarf Gothita Gothita's Psychic. Sludge Bomb followed by Payback only KOes Calm Mind Gothita after it has switched into Stealth Rock twice; try to do force at least atleast one double switch when you predict that CM Gothita is switching in, and force it to take Stealth Rock damage once, to bring it within range of the combination the next time it switches into Foongus and takes Stealth Rock damage.

If Clear Smog is run and you are low enough to be KOed by a setup sweeper that has not yet boosted its stats, and you do not have any means to stop this boosting sweeper once it has set up, consider sacking Foongus by continuing to use Clear Smog so that the sweeper does not leave the encounter with a boost. If Spore is run, try to save it up for something important instead of using it immediately. Sludge Bomb is the safest move to use when the opponent has a Vullaby not yet in play, (RC) and you aren't sure if it's Overcoat. Be careful of when switching into strong physical attackers (AC) as this set lacks significant investment in Defense.

Team Options
========

Foongus has great synergy with a variety of bulky Water- and Fire-types such as Chinchou and Ponyta; it can even be run with both to form a Fire-Water-Grass core. Foongus can be used alongside other Regenerator Pokemon, most notably Slowpoke, to form a defensive core that can be tough to break. Foongus should not be used as the sole means for a team to deal with Gothita, as it is still prone to being trapped if it is weakened.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Gothita**: Scarf Gothita can switch in on a weakened Foongus after Sleep Clause has been activated, or on a healthy Foongus if Gothita itself can get in safely, Trick a Choice Scarf onto Foongus to discourage Spore, and eliminate it with Psychic. Calm Mind Gothita can use Foongus as setup bait to potentially sweep. Both variants should be wary of Payback, however.

**Bulletproof**: Chespin and Jangmo-o are immune to Sludge Bomb (AC) thanks to Bulletproof (AC) and resist Giga Drain; Chespin is also immune to Spore. However, Clear Smog prevents them from attempting to set up a sweep with their free turns, and if Chespin does not run Zen Headbutt, it actually risks losing eventually once its Synthesis runs out of PP. In addition, neither is considered to be competitively viable in the current metagame.

[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to its great defensive typing, Foongus makes for an excellent answer to many of the metagame's top threats, such as Timburr, Snivy, and Chinchou, potentially nullifying them for the rest of the match duebeing able to nullify them for the entire match thanks to its great longetivity with Regenerator and Giga Drain. Once in play, Foongus can turn out to be quite a nuisance with its supportive movepool, which most notably consists oftains Spore, and decent offensive presence. However, it is held back due to its merely decentdiocre defensive stats and the likelihood to bevulnerability to being trapped by the extremely popular Gothita.

Spore is a fantastic support move that allows Foongus to heavily pressure the opponent even before it is used. Sludge Bomb is Foongus's mandatory STAB move, heavily damaginges the Fairy-types Foongus is checking and beingchecks and is fairly threatening for most switch-ins. Payback usually 2HKOes Calm Mind Gothita, preventing Foongus from being used as setup bait, and allows Foongus to beat Life Orb Gastly in a 1v1one-on-one scenario. It also has a fair chance to OHKO Choice Scarf Gothita after Stealth Rock damage, which is helpful, as Choice Scarf Gothita cannot OHKO a healthy Foongus. Giga Drain is a nice secondary STAB move and also slightly heals Foongus. Clear Smog prevents Foongus from being used as setup bait. Hidden Power [which Hidden Power?] isn't recommended, as Foongus is already pressed for slots, and it forces Foongus to give up an important stat point due to the reduction in IVs; however, but if they must be used, an EV spread of 124 HP / 80 Atk / 80 Def / 160 SpD should be used instead. (consider putting this in OO instead since it's rather negative)

Set Details
========

The given Attack EVs allow Foongus to usually OHKO Choice Scarf Gothita after Stealth Rock damage and 2HKO Calm Mind Gothita from at full health. The HP EVs let Foongus heal 8 HP from Regenerator, as well as letting it survive Mienfoo's U-turn followed by Gothita's Psychic from full health. 14 SpD hits an56 Special Defense EVs allow Foongus to gain an extra point from Eviolite number, and lets Foongus avoid the OHKO from Focus Sash Abra's Psychic after Stealth Rock damage. The combination of HP and Special Defense EVs also allows Foongus to survive Chinchou's or SturdyJuice Magnemite's Volt Switch followed by Gothita's Psychic after Stealth Rock damage; if this is not needed because Foongus is paired with reliable hazard removal, an HP point can be moved to Defense for an EV spread of 44 HP / 76 Atk / 156 Def / 76 SpA / 156 SpD. The Defense investment lets Foongus reach an Eviolite numbergives Foongus an extra point in Defense. The Special Attack EVs most notably grant Foongus the chance to OHKO Doduo with Sludge Bomb after Stealth Rock damage, ands well as 2HKO Z-Sunny Day Ponyta at full health with Sludge Bomb. If Foongus is being used on a Hail or Shail or sand team and you are confident you can get chipof getting prior damage of 3 HP on Choice Scarf Gothita before it is sent in to haveFoongus has been switched in, giving Foongus a good chance to KO it with Payback, you could forgo the Attack investment entirely and run ancan be forgone; thus, a EV spread of 124 HP / 156 Def / 156 SpD would be used for good mixed bulk. Speed is reduced because the other stats are much more important for Foongus's role. Eviolite is necessary to avoid key OHKOsbeing OHKOed [by?] and synergizes well with Regenerator. Regenerator allows Foongus to repeatedly check what it is neededneeds to.

Usage Tips
========

Do not use Payback on a predicted Gothita hard switchif you predict Gothita to switch in; its damage is not increased on switches, so Sludge Bomb does nearly as much damage. If Payback is revealed too early, then the Gothita user can simply wait until Foongus is heavily weakened before attempting to trap it. Although youFoongus can usually withstand Chinchou's Volt Switch followed by Gothita's Psychic after one layer of entry hazardsSpikes or Stealth Rock, be wary of switching into Magnemite's Volt Switch, because it may be an Analytic variant, which will boost Volt Switch's damage enough to put youFoongus in range of being KOed by Gothita's Psychic after hazard damagetaking damage from hazards. If you manage to keep Foongus healthy and hazards off of your side of the field but on theirs, Foongus would be able to tank a Mienfoo U-turn followed byand Choice Scarf Gothita's Psychic. Sludge Bomb followed by+ Payback only KOes Calm Mind Gothita after it has switched into Stealth Rock twice; try to force at least one double switch when you predict that Calm Mind Gothita is switching in, andwill be switching in; force it to take Stealth Rock damage once, to bring it within range of the combinationbeing KOed by the two aforementioned moves the next time it switches into Foongus and takes Stealth Rock damage.

If Clear Smog is run and you are lowFoongus is weakened enough to be KOed by a setup sweeper that has not yet boosted its stats, and you do not have any meansway to stop this boosting sweeper once it has set up, consider sacking Foongus by continuing to use Clear Smog so that the sweeper does not leave the encounter with a boost. If Spore is run, try to save it up for something importantfor a threatening foe instead of using it immediately. Sludge Bomb is the safest move to use when the opponent has a Vullaby not yet in play and you aren't sure if it's is running Overcoat. Be careful when switching into strong physical attackers, as this setFoongus lacks significant investment in Defense.

Team Options
========

Foongus has great synergy with a variety of bulky Water- and Fire-types such as Chinchou and Ponyta; it can even be runused with both of them to form a Fire-Water- / Water / Grass core. Foongus can be used alongside other Regenerator Pokemon, most notably Slowpoke, to form a defensive core that can be tough to break. Foongus should not be used as the sole means for a team to deal with Gothita, as it is still prone to being trapped ifonce it is weakened.

Spore is almost guaranteed to temporarily eliminate an enemy Pokemon from the match. Sludge Bomb is a fairly threatening STAB move with a handy chance to poison, notably hitteavily damaging Fairy-types for heavy damage. Giga Drain further increases Foongus's longevity and hits Water-, Rock-, and Ground-types hard. Clear Smog deters various setup sweepers such as Dragon Dance Scraggy and Bulk Up Timburr from boosting up. Various Hidden Powers can prevent Foongus from being walled by certain Steel-types; Hidden Power Fighting hits Pawniard hard, Hidden Power Fire 2HKOes Ferroseed, and Hidden Power Ground OHKOes Magnemite if Sturdy is broken. Hidden Power Psychic maycan also be used to lure Croagunk.

The given EVs grant Foongus solid 25 / 21 / 21 bulk (spaces) after Eviolite; 14 Defense and Special Defense hitlet Foongus gain an extra point from Eviolite numbers. Regenerator is what gives Foongus its niche by, making it extremely difficult to wear down. Eviolite is used over other defensive items (which items? specify) because Foongus has built-in healingaccess to recovery already with Regenerator. An EV spread of 44 HP / 160 Def / 80 SpA / 160 SpD can also be used, as it still allows Foongus to heal 8 HP perwith Regenerator switch and gives it a decent chance to OHKO Doduo with Sludge Bomb after Stealth Rock damage. If Clear Smog is run and the IVs are not reduced by Hidden Power, you can include an extra Speed point as well with the alternative EV spread for a spread of 44 HP / 156 Def / 76 SpA / 156 SpD / 76 Spe.

Usage Tips
========

Try to use Spore on something important, keeping Sleep Clause in mind. Be careful when switching in on VoltTurn users if the opponent has a Gothita. If you areFoongus is within KO range of a +1 Knock Off against afrom Dragon Dance Scraggy that you have recently used Clear Smog on, it may be worth sacking Foongus by continuing to use Clear Smog so that Scraggy does not come out of the bout with a Speed boost, unless you have means to deal with a boosted Scraggy. If the opponent has a Vullaby not yet on the field and you're not sure if it has Overcoat, which blocks Spore, Sludge Bomb is the safest move to use, as Vullaby does not appreciate the poison chancebeing poisoned; however, if you ar team is about to be swept by a +2 Nasty Plot or Z-Mirror Move Vullaby, you can sack Foongus by repeatedly using Clear Smog instead. If the opponent allows Staryu to be put to sleep with Spore, there is a good chance that they plan to immediately switch Staryu out afterwards to activate Natural Cure, so using Spore again is an option. If Doduo or Houndour directly switches into Spore, chances are they haveit has Early Bird as their ability, so youFoongus should immediately switch out to your check afterward. If a bulky Pokemon such as Skrelp, Munchlax, or Mudbray switches into Spore, they mayit might be a Rest + Sleep Talk variant.

Team Options
========

A Dark-type such as Vullaby, Scraggy, Alolan Grimer, or Pawniard is mandatory to deal with Calm Mind Gothita, which uses Foongus as setup bait. If they carryit carries Pursuit, ithey can potentially eliminate Gothita early on in the match even before it traps Foongus. Due to its typing, Foongus synergizes well with a huge number of other defensive Pokemon;, such as Chinchou, Munchlax, Ponyta, and Staryu immediately come to mind as; they are bulky Pokemon that appreciate Foongus handling some of their checks and vice-versa, while Foongus also likes them dealing with its checks. Foongus can be paired with Slowpoke and Mienfoo to form a Regenerator core that can be incredibly difficult for unprepared teams to break.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Stun Spore can most notably cripple Fire- and Flying-types looking to switch in after Sleep Clause has been activatedone of their teammates has been put to sleep, but Foongus already hits them hard with Sludge Bomb. Synthesis gives Foongus yet another option to have aroundmode of recovery, but it is generally redundant on top of Regenerator and Giga Drain. Energy Ball is stronger than Giga Drain, but the extra healing Giga Drain offers is usually more useful. A combination of Venoshock and Toxic or Toxic Spikes support is not usually worth the effort, as Foongus does not have the Speed or Special Attack to sweep. Foongus has a good typing and access to Rain Dance, allowing it to fit onto Rrain teams easily. A fully physical set is not recommended, as Sludge Bomb is generally too good to pass up. Darkinium-Z Z-Foul Play easily OHKOes Choice Scarf Gothita and heavily damages Calm Mind Gothita, but Calm Mind Gothita can play around it with Substitute and Rest, and not carrying Eviolite means that Choice Scarf Gothita usually OHKOes Foongus.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Gothita**: Choice Scarf Gothita can switch in on a weakened Foongus after Sleep Clause has been activated,its teammate has been put to sleep or on a healthy Foongus if Gothita itself can get in safely; then, it can Trick a Choice Scarf onto Foongus to discourage Spore, and eliminate it with Psychic. Calm Mind Gothita can use Foongus as setup bait to potentially sweep. Both variants should be wary of Payback, however.

**Specially dDefensive Rest-Sleep Talk users**: Munchlax and Skrelp are two common Rest-Sleep Talk users that do not mind Spore and can then proceed to completely wall Foongus's relatively weak attacks. If Foongus stays in, they can PP stall Foongus by simply not using Sleep Talk when they are asleep.

**Poison- and Steel-types**: The likes ofPoison- and Steel-types such as Pawniard, Magnemite, Ferroseed, Alolan Grimer, and Croagunk resist or are immune to Foongus's STAB moves. Ferroseed in particular is also immune to Spore. However, they are heavily damaged by the appropriate Hidden Power.

**Psychic-, Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-types**: Once Spore has been used, various Pokemon thatPsychic-, Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-types, which hit Foongus super- effectively, can attempt to switch in. However, they may not enjoy being poisoned by Sludge Bomb's chance to poison; frailer Pokemon may even be outright KO'd.ed by it. In particular, Overcoat Vullaby is bulky enough to withstand Sludge Bomb and is immune to Spore, though it dislikes Sludge Bomb's chance to poison.

Other Options
=============

===================
