  • STAB on all attacks
  • Fast with decent offensive presence
  • Great coverage movepool
  • Has U-turn to keep up offensive momentum
  • Frail and easily revenge killed by faster attackers/Choice Scarfers
Protean Attacker

name: Protean Attacker

move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Grass Knot
move 4: U-turn / Hidden Power Fire
ability: Protean
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Naive / Timid

Moves
========
  • Hydro Pump Frogadier's most powerful attack, and it offers useful coverage against Fire-types Rock-types and Ground-types
  • Ice Beam offers excellent coverage alongside Hydro Pump; hitting Grass-types that resist the aforementioned attack, plus nabbing Dragon-types and Flying types too (and is a more accurate way of dealing with Ground-types should you not be able to afford a miss from Hydro Pump)
  • Grass Knot is Frogadier's most powerful option against Pokémon such as Feraligatr and Seismitoad
  • U-turn is Frogadier's means of momentum gain and scouting
  • Hidden Power Fire can also be used in the last slot to hit Ferroseed, who takes little damage from Frogadier's other coverage options
Set Details
========
  • Maximum Special Attack and Speed EVs are vital for allowing Frogadier to hit quickly and powerfully
  • A Naive nature enhances Frogadier's Speed while not lessening the damage output from U-turn
  • A Timid nature is the way to go if you choose not to opt for U-turn in the final slot
  • A Life Orb offers a much-appreciated power boost that lets Frogadier net KOs with greater ease, and since it is frail, it doesn't mind the recoil damage
Usage Tips
========
  • Since it is lacking in the Defenses department, your best bet is to bring Frogadier in either after an ally has been knocked out, or via a slow and bulky Volt Switch/U-turn/Baton Pass user
  • Frogadier should use U-turn for gaining offensive momentum should an appropriate opportunity arise. Additionally, U-turn can prove a very useful move to use early-game for momentum or scouting when Frogadier is not yet ready to try and sweep
  • While it might seem appealing to use Protean's defensive benefits; Frogadier is rather frail, and this combined with Life Orb damage means that Frogadier is still going to be taken out rather easily, even it resists its foe's attack
  • Priority users, faster opponents and special walls should ideally be disposed of before attemting to sweep, given that Frogadier cannot take hits well at all
Team Options
========
  • A slow and bulky user of Volt Switch/U-turn/Baton Pass can tank a hit and proceed to bring Frogadier in unscathed. Examples of these Pokemon include Probopass and Togetic
  • Frogadier appreciates having team mates who can set up entry hazards; this will give it an easier time KOing its opponents, plus will punish any foes switching in after Frogadier has forced their ally out. For example, Grass Knot is a guaranteed OHKO on Feraligatr after Stealth Rock. Since it can set up Stealth Rock in addition to sporting the aforementioned slow Volt Switch, Probopass is a team mate worth considering
  • Since Frogadier is going to be switching in and out of the field with U-turn a fair amount, entry hazards will serve to wear it down quickly, especially in conjunction with Life Orb recoil. For this reason, Frogadier likes having Rapid Spin or Defog support. Examples of Pokemon who can provide this support include Sandslash and Togetic
  • Frogadier benefits from Sticky Web support, for this allows it to outspeed foes it normally couldn't, and blast them with its coverage attacks. Some examples of Sticky Web users are Leavanny and Ariados
  • Physical wallbreakers like Sawk can prove useful for taking out the special walls that eat up Frogadier's attacks
Other Options
########
  • Surf is a more reliable alternative to Hydro Pump that will not ever suffer an untimely miss like the latter, however, Frogadier prefers the greater raw power that Hydro Pump has to offer
  • Dark Pulse can be used for its coverage against Psychic and Ghost-type Pokémon such as Musharna and Mismagius
  • Frogadier also has access to Toxic Spikes. Since it is fast and can force switches, it is shouldn't have many problems getting a layer down and weakening its counters for itself and its teammates
  • Taunt is a possibility for shutting down opposing walls
Checks and Counters
########
  • **Special Walls**: Special walls like Lickilicky and Audino are happy to take hits from Frogadier all day, and knock it out with few problems
  • **Faster Attackers**: Faster attackers like Sceptile and Choice Scarfers will be able to swiftly revenge kill a frail Pokémon like Frogadier before it gets the chance to attack them, especially as Frogadier is going to have taken some recoil from its Life Orb
  • **Priority Attackers**: Priority attackers will trouble a fast and frail Pokémon such as Frogadier; it will not enjoy being badly dented or KOed before it can attack them
  • **Entry Hazards**: Entry hazards in addition to Life Orb recoil will result in Frogadier getting worn down quickly as it switches in and out of the field
  • **Special Tanks**: Specially bulky attackers like Lanturn or Assault Vest Hariyama can prove problematic for Frogadier, given that it may struggle to damage them significantly, and their offensive presence will overwhelm its lacking defenses

But this isn't all; Frogadier is fast with a decent offensive presence, has a great coverage movepool, and the ability to use U-turn to keep up offensive momentum. Hydro Pump is Frogadier's most powerful attack, and it deals heavy damage against Fire-types, Rock-types, and Ground-types. Ice Beam offers excellent coverage alongside Hydro Pump, hitting Grass-types that resist Water, and also nailing Dragon-types and Flying types; it is also a more accurate way of dealing with Ground-types. Grass Knot is Frogadier's most powerful option against Pokemon such as Feraligatr and Seismitoad, which would easily take any of its other attacks. In the last moveslot, U-turn is Frogadier's means of maintaining momentum and scouting, whereas Hidden Power Fire can be used in the last slot to hit Ferroseed, which takes little damage from any of Frogadier's other coverage options.

I would expand C&C a little bit and add in priority users and maybe something like tanks. Also add in entry hazard, you make a mention of it above in team options, but reiterate it in C&C.

Frogadier doesn't learn Spikes Psywaves.

I think Grass Knot and Hidden Power Fire should be moved to Moves in the first set. Heck I think Grass Knot deserves to be on this set: slash it first with U-Turn

Cheers for the feedback Montsegur and Soulgazer; I have made the suggested amendments to the analysis.
As for my blunder with Spikes, I guess I derped because I was thinking of Greninja. xD

Frankly I don't think Dark Pulse is worth a main move, or even a slash. There aren't that much Ghosts or Psychics in the tier, most of which either outspeed Frog or survive the hit anyway (you can weaken Psychics with U-turn and then Hydro Pump them that way). It matters much more to Frogadier to hit Pokes that resist its strongest attack. Grass Knot is definitely more worthy of the 3rd spot since bulky Waters like Poliwrath, Seismitoad, and Gatr are plentiful, while Hidden Power Fire can be slashed alongside U-turn since it is solely for Ferroseed.

Another noteworthy move Frogadier learns is Toxic Spikes. This lets Frogadier do work against its bulkier responses, such as Lanturn and Lickilicky. Frog is also fast and can cause switches, meaning it is very easy to get a layer down and weakening its counters for itself and its teammates.

Speaking of teammates, you could make a small mention of Sticky Web support, since it lets Frog outspeed more targets and blast them with its coverage.

You should mention physical wallbreakers as teammates to pummel the special walls that Frog cannot overcome (such as Audino, you could list that in C&C) too.

When you say "specially-inclined bulky attackers", you imply that said attackers need to be bulky and be specially offensive. Change that to "Specially Bulky Attackers". Also, I don't believe Assault Vest Lapras is relevant, replace that with something like Assault Vest Hariyama.

Finally, you'll need the right formatting for C&C. Refer to main formatting or other analyses if you're unsure.

In Usage Tips mention that you'll need to get rid of priority users and faster opponents as well as blobs before trying to sweep because Frogadier can't take hits. You could mention that U-turn is a very useful move early-game when Frogadier isn't ready to sweep yet.

When listing hazard setters as partners, give some examples of hazard setters that work well with frog. In addition give an example or two of important OHKOs or 2HKOs entry hazards help nab

not confident about the relevance of my example of a KO aided by Stealth Rock
OHKOing Gatr after rocks is super important and relevant; as long as you aren't a protean'd fire type from the last turn or something random.

as far as I know, a bulky attacker is referred to as a tank - so in CC I'd replace "specially bulky attackers" [which by itself is a confusing title..] to "Special Tanks".

looks really solid otherwise, nice work

You should make a mention of Prioroty when your talking about its frailty and susceptibility to faster attackers in the overview.
