Gabite

QC: TONE114 / Raiza. / galbia
GP: The Dutch Plumberjack / P Squared

[OVERVIEW]

Gabite carves out a niche in the PU metagame with a good typing that provides it with few weaknesses, allowing it to check a lot of offensive threats in the tier such as Rapidash, Zebstrika, Ninetales, and Pawniard. It also has access to Stealth Rock, which allows it to support a lot of teams well. It can be an offensive threat with its access to two strong STAB moves in Earthquake and Dragon Claw along with Toxic, which allows it to wear down walls, but its good bulk with Eviolite makes it a good wall as well, and its ability Rough Skin discourages the use of contact moves. On the downside, it is 4x weak to Ice-type moves, leaving it vulnerable to Ice-types such as Piloswine and Pokemon that run Ice-type coverage, such as Simipour. It also lacks access to reliable recovery, which makes it easily worn down. It faces strong competition from other Stealth Rock setters such as Piloswine and Probopass, which have access to a priority move in Ice Shard and a pivoting move in Volt Switch, respectively.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Stealth Rock is essential to any team, as it racks up damage on the foe upon switching in while also breaking any Sturdy or Focus Sash on the opposing team. Earthquake is Gabite's strongest STAB move and allows it to reliably check Pokemon such as Ninetales and Pawniard. Dragon Claw can be used to hit opposing Dragon-types such as Fraxure and Zweilous while also hitting an array of Pokemon for neutral damage. Toxic is used to wear down bulkier Pokemon such as Piloswine and Poliwrath, as well as Defoggers, putting them on a timer.

Set Details
========

Gabite makes use of 80 Speed EVs in order to outspeed Pawniard, which allows Gabite to KO Pawniard before being KOed itself. Maximum HP investment along with an Eviolite is used to take as many hits as possible, while 104 Defense EVs are used to survive a +2 Life Orb Carracosta's Waterfall. The rest of the EVs are placed into Attack to dish out as much damage as possible. Rough Skin is used in order to get small amounts of damage off when a foe uses a contact move such as Iron Head or Close Combat.

Usage Tips
========

Gabite should attempt to set up Stealth Rock as early as possible, but it shouldn't be used as a lead in every battle. It beats most other users of Stealth Rock, so it should take advantage of them by getting up Stealth Rock of its own. It can use Stealth Rock on a predicted switch as well. Gabite can be used to switch into some strong attackers such as Pawniard, Zebstrika, and Rapidash, although it is limited in how many times it can switch in because of its lack of reliable recovery. After setting up Stealth Rock, Gabite should focus on wearing down the foe with the combination of it dual STAB moves, Toxic, and passive damage from Rough Skin. It should be kept at a high health if the opponent has a threat such as Carracosta, as Gabite can take a Life Orb-boosted Waterfall at +2. Gabite should look out for Taunt users such as Misdreavus, as they can prevent Gabite from using Stealth Rock or Toxic.

Team Options
========

Gabite works well mainly on balanced teams, as it can be used to take hits and get off a lot of damage. Pokemon that can take on Ice-types, such as Grumpig and Pawniard, make great partners for Gabite, as it is 4x weak to Ice. Other entry hazard setters such as Roselia and Whirlipede make good partners for Gabite, as they provide more support and rack up even more damage on the foe upon switching in. Steel-types such as Probopass partner well with Gabite, as they resist Gabite's weaknesses while also dealing super effective damage to Fairy-types such as Togetic and Clefairy, which Gabite struggles with. Spinblockers such as Misdreavus and Gourgeist-XL are good partners for Gabite, as they can keep Gabite's Stealth Rock on the field of play. Gabite partners well with Defiant users such as Pawniard and Purugly, as they discourage the use of Defog in order to keep Gabite's Stealth Rock in play. Setup sweepers such as Ninetales and Carracosta appreciate Gabite's Stealth Rock support, along with Toxic and Rough Skin damage, as it gives them more potential to sweep by wearing down their checks and counters.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Gabite can make use of a spread of 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD or 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def to maximize the amount of hits it can take specially or physically, respectively. It can also use a Choice Scarf set, allowing it to outspeed Pokemon such as Simipour and Dodrio in order to deal a lot of damage. A Choice Band set could also be used, allowing it to deal a lot of damage to bulkier Pokemon such as Tangela and Gourgeist-XL. Roar is also an option that allows Gabite to phaze setup sweepers while also racking up damage with entry hazards. Gabite can use Stone Edge, allowing it to take on Flying-types, mainly Defoggers, such as Togetic and Pelipper, although they are more crippled by residual damage from Stealth Rock and Toxic. Fire Blast can also be used to surprise Ice- and Grass-types such as Avalugg and Tangela upon switching in and deal a lot of damage. Outrage can be used to deal more damage than Dragon Claw, although Gabite is then forced into a move that can easily be taken advantage of. Gabite can use Rest to fully heal itself and get rid of status, although it becomes setup fodder while asleep.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types**: Ice-types such as Piloswine and Avalugg take little to no damage from Gabite's attacks while dealing 4x super effective STAB damage in return; the former can also take advantage of Gabite by setting up Stealth Rock, while the latter can Recover any damage it has taken.

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types such as Clefairy and Togetic are immune to Gabite's Dragon-type STAB move and deal super effective STAB damage in return; the former is also immune to Toxic and can use Gabite as setup fodder.

**Physical Walls**: Physical walls such as Gourgeist-XL and Tagnela can take on any of Gabite's attacks; the former can burn Gabite with Will-O-Wisp, while Tangela can KO it with a 4x super effective Hidden Power Ice.

**Status**: Will-O-Wisp can be used against Gabite to halve its Attack, while Toxic can rack up residual damage on it and put it on a timer, forcing it to switch out.

**Water-types**: Because Water-types such as Poliwrath and Pelipper usually carry Ice-type coverage, Gabite can easily be KOed by common Water-types.

before i go im quickly gonna say this:
Gabite @ Eviolite
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Atk / 80 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge / Toxic (move 4 ofc - dont care the order)
- Dragon Claw
Speed for pawn + a lot of attack + max hp (max hp over max atk for stuff like pluff and rap)
You dont need the sdef as u hard wall zebby and tales and if anything is needed it would be for ph def (rap/pluff) but sdef/phdef spread can prolly be in SD
also edge is for togetic/pluff/etc

ofc other qc thoughts

ok
i used a phys def spread in the past so it could be mentioned in oo as it didnt perform too bad

Stone edge tickles its targets so it should be slashed after toxic if anything (wouldn't slash at all but w/e

Also Roar is pretty decent in that slot and definitely more useful than stone edge since gabite annoys pelipper much more with toxic and shouldn't bother dealing with Togetic (which toxic does more effectively since coupled with sr spamming it can wear it down if it wants to defog

Basically remove it and have toxic in the last slot and maybe roar since shuffling with rocks is kewl
Sorry if I am missing some target

Ah also fire blast isn't too bad since it does a bit to tangela torterra and gourgeist but Toxic does more so w/e

fire blast does fuck all to them and stone edge does some decent damage

176+ Atk Gabite Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Pelipper: 126-150 (39 - 46.4%) -- 89.5% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
176+ Atk Gabite Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Pelipper: 174-206 (53.7 - 63.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
176+ Atk Gabite Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Jumpluff: 232-274 (79.7 - 94.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
176+ Atk Gabite Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Togetic: 94-112 (30 - 35.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock - phdef gets 2HKOd

I dont mind stone edge not getting a slash but fire blast should not even get a moves mention
0 SpA Gabite Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Tangela: 124-148 (37.1 - 44.3%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Gabite Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Torterra: 106-126 (26.9 - 31.9%) -- 96.7% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
Tangela is the only one it does a lot more damage to and it is crippled by toxic and you also have to run a -def/sdef nature which really hinders gabites niche (-speed is also dumb)

Roar isnt that great a move as ur better off spreading toxic/hitting things hard with dragon claw and it has no real targets as most set up sweepers wont try to set up on gabite (outside of duosion) or they force it out anyway (regice)

Also raiza/kingler/scorp/me/prolly some others were working on a better spread but i cant remember what it was (iirc same speed/about 80 attack/rest physical bulk) i will try and find it e: what kingler said: 248 HP / 76 Atk / 104 Def / 80 Spe adamant

Hitting things hard but yeah fire blast is bad so just demote stone edge to moves and put roar there too I guess

Edit: muh wormadam trash

I already talked about a max HP/104 def/ rest in attack/speed for pawn spread that allows you not to get ohkoed by Ada Costa after smash. Agreeing toxic>stone edge.

I feel that Toxic is too good for Gabite to pass up as Stone Edge isn't doing much to either Pelipper or Togetic as they can just Roost off any damage they take plus Toxic wears them down a lot more, so remove Stone Edge from Moves and put it in OO. For Usage Tips, I wouldn't say that Gabite is best used as a lead (Probopass isn't really a lead, and other leads such as Aurorus can beat it 1v1). Instead, say that Gabite should attempt to set up Stealth Rock as soon as possible for its teammates. For Team Options, mention Pokemon that can handle Ice-types for Gabite, you could also mention Spike setters as it can stack hazards along with Stealth Rock. For Other Options, Fire Blast could be added to catch Grass and Ice-types off guard. Outrage could possibly get a mention, but I don't think it's neccessary as being locked into a move like that isn't the best thing to do despite being stronger than Dragon Claw. For Checks and Counters, you already mentioned Togetic and Avalugg in other parts, so you don't have to repeat them. You can replace Avalugg wiith Tangela in Physical Walls. Water-types can also make a mention as they normally carry Ice-type coverage, so give some examples. Implement and I'll check again Dundies.

[OVERVIEW]
mention the competition with other sr setters
mention that it is able to hit reasonably hard with its dual STAB and can cripple walls with toxic, so it's threatening from the offensive side too.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
mention srock breaks sashes and sturdy
move roar to OO, and mention it is used also to rack up residual damage, also i wouldnt mention Ursaring and Huntail, the first gets hit by Eq+poison+rough skin and it's basically KO also has to waste a turn setting up so yeah, while huntail is c- and you could find better examples.

Set Details
========
mention why it is important to outspeed pawn.
its carracosta waterfall not aqua jet.

Usage Tips
========
its carracosta waterfall not aqua jet.
remove grumpig mention, as it still loses 1v1 with gabite and most of the times its slower
mention you shouldn't lead with gabite everytime
mention gabite can beat most sr setters, so it should take advantage of that by setting up stealth rock
mention srock can also be used on an obvious opposing switch
mention that after setting srock gabite should focus on further wearing foes down with toxic or its dual STAB moves.

Team Options
========
mention what playstyles can make use of gabite
did you mean ice-types instead of steel-types in first sentence right?
mention some cleaners that also appreciate toxic+rough skin to wear down foes late-game
mention some fairies gabite struggles with when you talk about steel-types

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
choice scarf allows it to outspeed other threats, ninetales and zebby aren't the best examples because you can deal with them anyway, unless it runs hp ice but thats unlikely
i dont think the cb can deal a lot to dmg to avalugg anyway, mention a better example
for roar: look in moves
mention that togetic and pelipper still don't take a lot of damage and can be dealt with toxic

Checks and Counters
===================
add more content, aim for at least 2 lines for every category, for example: add that clefairy is also immune to toxic and can use gabite as a setup fodder. mention others such as regice can take advantage of the forced gabite switch to set up a rock polish etc.

also add a category for fast taunt users.

do all of this Dundies and consider QC 2/3

for c&C:
since there are only two flying types that check gabite mention peli in water types and togetic in fairy types and remove flying types
also taunt doesnt really hinder it enough to be worth a mention esp when out of the reg taunt users the only ones which stay in on it force gabite out anyway (simipour/missy) so imo should be removed (lol simipour isnt gonna taunt gabite)

Moves
========

Stealth Rock is essential to any team, as it racks up damage on the foe's team upon switching in (RC) while also breaking any Sturdy or Focus Sash on the opposing team. Earthquake is Gabite's strongest STAB move that and ('that' implies that Gabite has multiple STAB moves that allow it to do this and that Earthquake is the strongest one of those; while that may be true, I doubt it's the nuance you're looking for. Also may want to add 'reliable' before STAB move because technically Outrage is stronger) allows it to reliably check Pokemon such as Ninetales and Pawniard. **Status**: Will-O-Wisp can be used against Gabite to halve its attack, weakening its attacks, (in this wording it's absolutely redundant; if you do want to add something change it to 'lowering its damage output', although I prefer just to remove it outright) while Toxic can rack up residual damage on it and put it on a timer, forcing it to switch out.

**Water-types**: Since Because Water-types such as Poliwrath and Pelipper usually carry Ice-type coverage, Gabite can easily be KOed by common Water-types.
