Moves
========
Magma Storm traps opposing walls such as Chansey, Clefable, defensive Cyclohm, Mollux, defensive Tomohawk, and Pyroak and deals residual damage to them. However, its 75% accuracy can be extremely annoying, especially because it only has 8 PP. Additionally, Magic Guard Clefable doesn't take residual damage, while Tomohawk can escape with Baton Pass. Magma Storm can also be used to trap offensive Pokemon, which can give Heatran switch initiative, but the move's PP is best saved for trapping walls. Taunt shuts down trapped walls, with Clefable, Mollux, and Pyroak being able to do little back, while defensive Cyclohm and Chansey can put up a little bit of a fight with Discharge and Seismic Toss, respectively. Defensive Tomohawk can't do much back with Air Slash, but it can hit Heatran hard with Earth Power. Toxic wears down trapped walls, though Mollux is immune to it and Magic Guard Clefable doesn't take damage. The fourth moveslot is a bit customizable. Earth Power hits Mollux, Crucibelle, Plasmanta, and other Heatran for good damage. Flash Cannon lets Heatran 2HKO Magic Guard Clefable without having to waste precious Magma Storm PP. Heatran can also use Stealth Rock, which deals chip damage to opposing walls and other Pokemon for its teammates. Due to its high PP, it's also a nice move to use to burn turns against walls while Magma Storm, Taunt, and Toxic are in effect.
Set Details
========
224 Speed EVs and a Timid nature allow Heatran to outspeed offensive Tomohawk. 252 Special Attack EVs allow Heatran to hit as hard as possible. 32 HP EVs increase Heatran's bulk slightly. Leftovers grants Heatran passive recovery, allowing it to shrug off weak attacks more easily. Air Balloon improves Heatran's matchup against Earth Power Pyroak and offensive Pokemon such as Mega Diancie. However, it reduces Heatran's longevity and ability to stallbreak. Flash Fire gives Heatran a useful immunity to Fire-type moves like Pyroak's Lava Plume, Mega Sableye's Will-O-Wisp, Clefable's Flamethrower, Mollux's Lava Plume and Fire Blast, and defensive Cyclohm's Flamethrower and Fire Blast. Heatran's immunity to both burn and poison, two common methods stall Pokemon use to wear down opposing Pokemon, is one of the main draws of this set.
Usage Tips
========
Switch Heatran into stall threats, ideally on a predicted Fire-type move, Toxic, or resisted move. However, watch out for Clefable's Thunder Wave when switching in. In most instances, Heatran should use Magma Storm, then Taunt, and then Toxic. However, Heatran should use Taunt first against Clefable to avoid getting hit with Thunder Wave, especially because most Clefable that run Thunder Wave also run Magic Guard. Make sure Tomohawk, Mollux, and Pyroak aren't running a Ground-type coverage move and Cyclohm isn't running Hydro Pump, as they would otherwise beat this set. Although Heatran cannot trap Mega Sableye, it forces Mega Sableye out, as Knock Off and Foul Play do little damage and Will-O-Wisp activates Flash Fire. If Heatran traps an offensive Pokemon, it should generally switch to an appropriate check or counter.
Team Options
========
Offensive teams appreciate Heatran's ability to take walls out, and Heatran also has a good offensive presence. In particular, VoltTurn teams appreciate walls taken out, as walls do not mind the constant wearing down from VoltTurn teams; in return, Volt Switch and U-turn users attract walls, which they can switch out of into Heatran. Good users of these moves include Mega Scizor, Tornadus-T, Syclant, Mega Beedrill, Mega Manectric, and Rotom-W. Mega Scizor, Syclant, and Mega Beedrill in particular appreciate Heatran's immunity to Fire. Cawmodore appreciates Heatran's ability to remove Haze Tomohawk, defensive Cyclohm, Choice Scarf Mollux, and Unaware Clefable, as well as its immunity to Fire-type moves such as Will-O-Wisp. Sweepers, such as Mega Lopunny, Stratagem, Mega Diancie, Mega Crucibelle, and Mega Manectric, appreciate having opposing walls taken out for them. Entry hazard setters such as Clefable, Ferrothorn, and Tomohawk make for good teammates, as the chip damage can reduce the number of turns Heatran needs to stall for.
