Our good friend Kingler has constantly been in competition with our lobstery friend Crawdaunt ever since 3rd Gen- While Kingler was ever so more defensive and had fewer weaknesses Crawdaunt had a delicious Dark STAB and resistances to Psychic/Ghost/Dark attacks, but additional weaknesses to Bug and Fighting attacks. 4th Gen differentiated them furthur by giving Crawdaunt Dragon Dance while Kingler got Agility.

5th gen? The big difference lies in their abilities; Crawdaunt got the amazing Adaptability, while Kingler got the just-as-amazing Encourage.

Crawdaunt would seem to have the advantage at first- he's got better type coverage and overall better damage against neutral targets thanks to Adaptability's stronger boost, while also retaining their useful effects like defense lowering or increased critical hits. Dragon Dance is also an amazing move, and Crawdaunt is actually able to make some use of special attacks.

That said, Kingler is still better for taking hits and sending them back, thanks to a much better Defense stat and the ability to use Life Orb more effectively. Kingler also gets more power on Rock Slide. Agility and a better Speed also allows our crab to outspeed enemies that Crawdaunt after a Dragon Dance.

Set Ideas

LOCrab+Agility/Swords Dance
252Atk, 252Spd, 4 HP
Jolly/Encourage
Life Orb
~Crabhammer
~Rock Slide
~X-Scissor
~Return/Brick Break/Agility/Swords Dance/Claw Sharpen

A very standard 4 attacks set. Crabhammer and Rock Slide are your staples, since Crabhammer is strong and Rock Slide ignores the LO recoil. X-Scissor hits a few notable Grass-types, like Torterra and Tangrowth, harder than the first two moves. Return hits Poliwrath, Breloom and their Water/Fighting and Grass/Fighting legendary friends harder, but has little use otherwise, while Brick Break hits Empoleon and Nattorei harder. Agility and Swords Dance are excellent boosting moves, depending on whether you want Kingler to have a fearsome 546 Speed or over 700 Attack. Kingler's moderate 75 Speed allows him to still outspeed a few threats, so he's okay with running Swords Dance sometimes, unlike Crawdaunt who runs a larger risk using it.

Claw Sharpen is an interesting new boosting move for Kingler. While the boost isn't as great as Swords Dance, it also ensures Crabhammer and Rock Slide get practically perfect accuracy, thus removing the chance of an untimely 10% miss.

Crabail
252Atk, 252Spd, 4HP
Adamant/Jolly
Hyper Cutter
Salac Berry/Liechi Berry
~Flail
~Crabhammer
~Endure/Substitute
~Swords Dance/Agility

Kingler's main boast over other users of Flail/Reversal is that he can choose to boost either his speed or attack to sky-high levels, instead of having to rely on pinch berries for either stat.

Obviously, you should pair the corresponding nature and item with the attack. Swords Dance should use Salac Berry while Liechi Berry users should be running Agility. You should be using Hyper Cutter here, since Encourage is useless and Hyper Cutter prevents opponents with Intimidate from coming in to ruin your fun. Unforunately, Kingler is still vulnerable to priority.

Crab of choice
252Atk, 252Spd, 4HP
Adamant/Jolly
Choice Band/Scarf
Encourage
~Crabhammer
~Rock Slide
~X-Scissor
~Return/Brick Break

Krusty the Krab is ready to rip through your opponents like he's looking for money through their wallets. There's very little explaination, at any rate. Send Kingler in and pound their faces to oblivion!

Any more suggestions for movesets or spreads, as well as comments on Kingler will be noted!

The lack of Encourage Waterfall is REALLY annoying.
Rock Slide is basically his only usable Encourage boosted move.

He can be thankful that Crabhammer got improved accuracy.
But if he had Waterfall, he'd a have a clear niche.
Feraligatr hits like a truck with Encourage LO Waterfall off 339 Atk max.
Can you imagine Kingler firing those off from his almost 400 Atk.
Lack of waterfall was annoying in Gen IV but now that they gave Kingler Encourage, it's pure trolling.

Anyway, my favourite Gen IV set was AgiliDance with Crabhammer and Return.
However, in this metagame Nattorei and Burunkeru join Empoleon in resisting that combo.
So it's harder for Kingler to find adequate coverage in two moves.

Absolutely ridiculous that Kingler doesn't get Waterfall, and Crabhammer isn't boosted by Encourage. ..At least Rock Slide is boosted?

Crawdaunt is pretty much always the superior choice now, sadly.

Body Slam's Encourage Base Power (85 x 1.3 = 110) is better than Return (103), and it gets no Life Orb recoil...

Just a heads up.

Body Slam is illegal with Encourage, since it's from a 3rd Gen Move Tutor.

You could always use the good ole SD/Agility/Crabhammer/Return for amazing versatility, against stall or HO

Because the two new water/normal resisters will probably be OU while kingler won't

LoL... a nice ability gets destroyed by the fact that he can barely use it. Woulda been cool, but now it seems to be on an equal level with hyper cutter. Its either a stronger rock slide or access to superpower =T. Still kingler will always win in the coolness factor

And Body Slam goes with Encourage. Don't forget, it's not just damage, LO recoil is prevented as well.

Might wanna do your homework there, bucko. Body Slam is a Generation 3 move tutor, which makes it illegal with Encourage. Literally the only usable move that Kingler gets that is Encourage-boosted is Rock Slide.

Just a heads up.

Why did Kingler not get Shell Break? Gorebyss got it, and it's a pink eel with virtually no shell (to be fair, Clamperl has a big shell and it does evolve into Gorebyss). Kingler is a crab, and it actually has a shell.

Im new and this may sound stupid, but I love kingler and why not use stomp with encourage? Stomp is sheer force boosted and it has a bettter accuracy then rock slide and hits the things it cant.

This.

Kingler with Shell Break, Sheer Force boosted Waterfall/Rockslide and a filler move for coverage would have actually been useable in the higher tiers.

As it is now he might be useful in NU, but is outclassed even in UU.

Kingler gets Swords Dance, Hone Claws and Agility. Awesome.

Kingler gets Sheer Force and has a higher Defense, Attack than Feraligatr. Awesome.

Kingler doesn't get Body Slam, Crunch, Ice Fang or Waterfall. Lame.

If only he had Crunch, Ice Fang, Waterfall and Dragon Dance. It would make him so amazing. Even more or Equally as amazing than Sheer Force Feraligatr.

That is so lame that Kingler received such a great ability but hardly has any moves to take advantage of it. Maybe in the next game they might include some move tutors moves that can compensate for it.
