Charizard is Uber Strong

Introduction:
Charizard is one of the most iconic "noob" Pokemon in ubers; he is commonly utilized by scrubs who wish to be like Ash, and they utilize horrible moves such as Body Slam, Slash, or Steel Wing. However, I believe that Charizard is actually quite useful in the Uber tier; given Rapid Spin (or, in this case, Magic Bounce) support, he can easily blow holes in teams given his new ability, Solar Power. This team is a showcase of what I believe, is a team that showcases Charizard's true potential and viability in the Uber tier. This team peaked at #7 on the Uber ladder, which, while admittedly not great of an achievement, shows that this team is somewhat viable (this is amplified by the fact that I am a horrible player).

Teambuilding:
[pimg]6[/pimg]
I wanted to use Charizard because his new ability Solar Power is quite amazing, coupled with the fact that I wanted to test how noobish he truly is.
[pimg]6[/pimg][pimg]3[/pimg]
I also wanted to use Venusaur because I wanted to test him as well, along with the fact that a Grass typing would be quite welcome on a team that is naturally Kyogre weak.
[pimg]6[/pimg][pimg]3[/pimg][pimg]383[/pimg]
I obviously needed Groudon on my team because Drought would help both Charizard and Venusaur.
[pimg]6[/pimg][pimg]3[/pimg][pimg]383[/pimg]

Reshiram was added to help clean up the opposing team after Charizard left holes with his powerful Solar Power boosted moves.
[pimg]6[/pimg][pimg]3[/pimg][pimg]383[/pimg]
[pimg]292[/pimg]
Shedinja was added as he is the only true counter to Kyogre; every other Pokemon in existence loses to either CM Kyogre or SpecsOgre.
[pimg]6[/pimg][pimg]3[/pimg][pimg]383[/pimg]
[pimg]292[/pimg][pimg]178[/pimg]
Finally, I needed support to make sure that Stealth Rock would not be on the field; I knew that Rapid Spin is hardly guaranteed to remove hazards due to the plethora of Ghost Pokemon in ubers, so I decided to use a Magic Bounce Pokemon. I chose Xatu for his reliable recovery, since Espeon is quite frail.
[pimg]6[/pimg]
[pimg]383[/pimg]
[pimg]292[/pimg][pimg]178[/pimg]
Venusaur did not really help to check Kyogre and his damage output was quite disheartening so I decided to use a Pokemon that would fix my weaknesses to common Fire Pokemon in ubers: Rock Arceus.

The Team At A Glance:
[pimg]6[/pimg]
[pimg]383[/pimg]
[pimg]292[/pimg][pimg]178[/pimg]

[pimg]383[/pimg] Groudon @ Leftovers
Trait: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Dragon Tail

Purpose: Groudon is primarily on this team to set up Sun and Stealth Rock; after that, he is hardly used other than to wall threats such as Zekrom, SD and DD Rayquaza, and SD Arceus.

EVs: The EVs are obviously allocated to promote maximum physical bulk.

Moveset: The moveset is standard; it gives him EdgeQuake coverage, and Dragon Tail is there for pHazing.

Possible Changes: I am considering Roar over Dragon Tail because SubToxic Lugia is quite annoying.

[pimg]6[/pimg]
Charizard (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Solar Power
EVs: 255 SAtk / 255 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Fire Blast
- Blast Burn
- Air Slash
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Purpose: Charizard is the team's main wall breaker and my main weapon against opposing sun teams. He usually just comes in on enemy Groudon if I am positive that they will not use Stealth Rock or Stone Edge, and I use Fire Blast, which kills a Pokemon on the opposing team unless they have Reshiram, in which case I just use Air Slash.

EVs: The EVs are obviously allocated to promote maximum special power.

Moveset: The moveset really focuses on Fire Blast, and Air Slash is used to hit Pokemon such as Reshiram and Rayquaza. Blast Burn is filler, although it is usually used when I am going to die to LO + Solar Power anyway.

Possible Changes: I am considering changing the moveset to having Focus Blast and Hidden Power Ice somewhere; perhaps I could run Focus Blast over Blast Burn and Hidden Power Ice over Hidden Power Grass.

Arceus(M) @ Rock Plate
Trait: Multitype
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Judgment
- Recover
- Will-O-Wisp

Purpose: Arceus is my secondary wall along with Groudon. He supports Groudon by burning threats like Arceus and Rayquaza, letting Groudon deal with them quite easily. He also checks the majority of Fire types in the tier such as Ho-oh and Reshiram. He is also my main check to Rayquaza, since MixQuaza demolishes Groudon. He sponges random Draco Meteors as well, making him my Giratina-O check.

EVs: The EVs are obviously allocated to promote bulk and speed.

Moveset: The moveset really is standard, and Will O Wisp support is really helpful.

Possible Changes: I am considering changing the EVs, as detailed by Mr. lol.

Reshiram @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Turboblaze
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Blue Flare
- Outrage
- Draco Meteor
- Focus Blast

Purpose: Reshiram, along with Charizard, help break down opposing sun teams by spamming high powered fire moves. He also is used as a great revenge killer; he outspeeds all other non-scarfed Pokemon except for Deoxys formes and he is my main Mewtwo check as Reshiram can survive an Ice Beam and KO back with Draco Meteor.

EVs: The EVs are obviously allocated to promote special attack and speed.

Moveset: The moveset really is standard.

Possible Changes: None.

[pimg]178[/pimg]
Xatu (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Bounce
EVs: 255 HP / 255 Def
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Roost
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Purpose: Xatu has one purpose: to keep off hazards. He performs this admirably, as he beats most hazard Pokemon. I switch him in on any Pokemon that usually uses Stealth Rock or Spikes. He also beats Chansey 1 v 1, although she can WishPass against him sadly.

EVs: The EVs are obviously allocated to promote physical bulk to beat Ferrothorn and Groudon.

Moveset: The moveset really is standard, and I don't really have any better options to be honest.

Possible Changes: I really want to change EVs on this, since adding Special Bulk really helps me against Dialga, while the physical bulk is useful too .

[pimg]292[/pimg]
Shedinja @ Focus Sash
Trait: Wonder Guard
EVs: 255 Atk / 255 Spd
Lonely Nature (+Atk, -Def)
- Swords Dance
- X-Scissor
- Shadow Sneak
- Will-O-Wisp

Purpose: Shedinja is really only useful to switch into Kyogre; he hard counters all Kyogre, and he usually burns a few Pokemon. In a pinch, he can revenge Deoxys and Mewtwo.

EVs: The EVs are obviously allocated to help his Attack and Speed, the only usable stats on Shedinja.

Moveset: The moveset really is random.

Possible Changes: I might want to change the moveset seeing as I chose it randomly.

Threatlist:
If Dialga is running Thunder and Stealth Rock then my Anti-Water core gets completely demolished and I am easily 6-0ed by Kyogre. Thankfully, his isn't too common.

My other main weakness is rain teams with Heal Bell / Wish Chansey, as they can basically outstall me, causing me to lose.

Playstyle:
The most common rain team that I see is basically a Drown All team; Kyogre / Ferrothorn / Dialga / Giratina-O / Filler / Filler. Rain teams are either won or lost by my Xatu / Shedinja / Arceus core: if I can prevent Dialga from getting up SR, then I basically win, as I weaken Kyogre, Ferrothorn, Giratina-O, and Dialga with Burns, until they eventually fall. On the other hand, if they get any hazard up then I lose. The game basically becomes into "Can you set up Stealth Rock or not?" This is the main reason that Chansey hurts my team, as it can take away burns with Heal Bell, and heal the other Pokemon back to full health, so I basically have to outstall the other team, which is quite annoying. Basically, when I face a rain team, I have to outplay them completely to win, while they have to outplay me to win; it's basically a matter of who can predict better and who can outplay better.

On the other hand, Charizard shines when he is facing an opposing sun team. Against opposing sun teams, I can quite easily sac Shedinja, since he isn't walling most of the other team, and Xatu really is only useful to harrass Groudon and preventing him from getting SR up. Therefore, I can usually sac Shedinja and Xatu quite easily; they aren't winning me this battle. What wins me the fight against most sun teams are Rock Arceus, Ho-oh, and Charizard. The most common sun teams usually utilize at most one Pokemon that can survive a hit from Charizard: Reshiram. Therefore, I can continuously come in on Groudon and spam Fire Blast, therefore killing off (or blowing enough holes) in their team for my Reshiram to sweep. Rock Arceus helps me to win by providing a fail safe for when Ho-oh comes in for free against a -2 Reshiram; he can easily wall Ho-oh and then I can switch back to Reshiram or Charizard for another round of mayhem.

I deal with sand in basically the same way; I sac Shedinja, win the weather war since Tyranitar should never beat Groudon, and then win with Charizard and Reshiram.

Logs:
These logs basically show how most battles go when I play against certain weathers.

This log shows me playing against sun; I weaken their team with Charizard then sweep with Reshiram.

This team gave me hell when I faced it, I don't know what I would change. Maybe add a spinner? Also, Palkia would be nice to counter rain/kyogre, as well.

I would get rid of blast burn on zard. It really doesn't have the defense to take attacks on that charge turn. Plus, solar power already eats away at its health enough. I suggest using flamethrower as an alternative.

There is NO FRIGGIN WAY this peaked Fifty. How does Shedinja beat Kyogre? What happens when Shedi is gone? Scarfed Mewtwo? I'm just sayin.

lol saying that you peaked 50 on the uber ladder is basically like saying that you peaked top 1000 in ou; shedinja can't get touched by kyogre and shedi can't die cause it's a ghost already!!!!!! and scarfed mewtwo can't touch shedi unless it spams shadow ball but even if it does then i just switch out to RAWRIZARD AND KILL EVERYONE or i switch to reshiram and use blue flare.

thanks for the rate but blast burn is really essential because if you're going against a good player then using blast burn makes them misplay horribly against you! it's super surprising! actually you gave me an idea i could run flamethrower over hidden power grass since i never use it anyway though!

haha thanks for the rate and i think i should add a spinner over venusaur probably!

Doesn't Charizard die fast with the possibilities of Rocks + Solar Power + Life Orb?
Don't get me wrong, I really like it, but have considered to add a spinner on your team? I don't play much Uber so I'm not to familiar to what spinner is the best, except Forry. But considerering about going REALLY original, and use a Lunar Dancing Cress on your team? Rocks apear after Lunar Dance, so that means Charizard can sweep twice if it failed the first time :3

Don't use Blast Burn. ever. just don't. That being said, replace it with focus blast and replace Hidden Power with Solarbeam or Overheat and slap a Scarf on Charizard.

Haha i didn't know that charizard could even use focus blast :O
thanks for the idea i'll test this!

When I first looked through this I though this was seriously a noob team. I actually read it twicce and was surprised that it isn't a half bad team if you play it right. Requires a good bit of prediction but can play out beautifully if you do things right.

Critiques:
-Blast Burn needs to go. Replace with Fire blast which is a little weaker and has less acc. but you don't need to recharge after using it. Focus Blast will also come in handy but it's a streaky move (sometimes hits spot on, sometimes never hits).
-You are right that your team gets wrecked by dragons. I just can't think of anything to help this team other than changing up Charizard a bit.

Use Overheat + Flamethrower on Zard so people can stop bitching about gimmicky blast burn as an excuse for a rate. I like ScarfZard + Specshiram tbh but it works either way I guess. How does ninja win the weather war against sand? Maybe try Forre over Xatu, spins reliably and lays spikes to edge out some OHKOs with Zard that you couldn't get without Blast Burn. Dragon resist as well, drawing fire attacks sO you can pivot to Reshi. Gl hf

thanks yeah this doesn't require prediction per se but more of knowing what to switch in to the other person's threats XD and i didn't use focus blast but i put dragon pulse instead of air slash

thanks i'm going to test that moveset change actually and forre would be useful but i actually really need to make sure no hazards get lay down at all because giratina-o is gay

Palkia over shedinja - more versatile and can take down kyogre better. Stone edge over rock slide - 20 power for 10 accuracy is way worth it on groudon.

Okay I don't normally rate teams but in this case I'll have to say my piece. Charizard isn't very viable in Ubers at all. I've actually tested it before, and it has one VERY serious problem: it dies VERY early on. Solar Power + that double SR weak pretty much means that you only kill one Pokemon. Sure you could provide Rapid Spin support and you have Xatu support, but at that point you might as well use something that is FAR more threatening under the sun such as Ho-oh or Victini.

Whats even worse is that Charizard is totally screwed against the common Kyogre. It doesn't do enough with Hidden Power Grass, and Kyogre obviously murders it. Most viable Fire-types in Ubers such as Ho-Oh, Blaziken, Victini, Reshiram, and Fire Arceus have ways of badly hurting incoming Kyogre, while cholophyl abusers have their Grass stab to ensure that Kyogre can't switch in safely. Heatran is the only real example of a good sun abuser that almost always loses to Kyogre (unless its a Torment Heatran that has a Substitute and Toxic Spikes up, and is not facing Rest Kyogre), but Heatran's fantastic Steel-typing more than makes up for that. Charizard on the other hand, has a very lack luster typing, and unlike Ho-Oh, has no way to deal massive damage to Kyogre nor Ho-Oh's excellent bulk.

I know you mentioned that you got to #7 on the ladder with this team, but thing is, with the current state the Ubers ladder is in, you can get in the top 10 easily with poorly built teams (Ive done it several times myself!). If you want this team to remain competitive, you are going to at least need to replace Charizard and possibly Shedinja if you can't fit the spin support, but tbh I think this team needs to be revamped into either a team based around Reshiram, Victini, Blaziken, Heatran, Fire Arceus, or Ho-Oh (actually in Heatran and Blaziken's case, you might be able to get away with using them with the other fire types thanks to them not hating hazards as much).

I sadly do not have the time atm to help you create that kind of team, so maybe it would be best to discuss this on IRC later.

Edit: I noticed that your Charizard was illegal. Dragon Pulse isn't possible to get on Solar Power Charizard. If you HAVE to use Charizard for some weird reason, the set that I used was Fire Blast / Overheat / Flame Charge or Hidden Power Ice/Air Slash or Hidden Power Ice @ Charcoal (LO makes you die even faster so I don't reccomend it). You are screwed against Kyogre anyways so no need for HP Grass. HP Ice is better for slamming Rayquaza and Garchomp, while I guess you could use Air Slash to flinch...

Edit 2: Unlike Charizard, Venusaur is actually very viable fyi, so I wouldn't say that it sucks!

):

But i'll just state my case for Charizard:

The main thing about Charizard is that he doesn't help me against rain teams ever. This is the main reason that Chansey hurts my team, as it can take away burns with Heal Bell, and heal the other Pokemon back to full health, so I basically have to outstall the other team, which is quite annoying.

The most common sun teams usually utilize at most one Pokemon that can survive a hit from Charizard: Reshiram (I just added in Dragon Pulse as a second thought because I didn't know of it's legality /:).

I deal with sand in basically the same way; I sac Shedinja, win the weather war since Tyranitar should never beat Groudon, and then win with Charizard and Reshiram.

oh and yeah i know venusaur is viable but i suck at using him because i dunno the evs and stuff >_>

Sub toxic lugia looks like it can annoy this team to death <.<. Your only going to be able to switch xatu or a toxiced poke into it and if the opponent somehow manages to get sr up (say ghostceus packs it) lugia can predict the switch and dragon tail something out. It even stalls charizard out for a LOT of residual damage. I'd reccomend stuffing a blissey or wish passer into this team to help out with that residual damage threat but I'm not sure how it can actually get fit in without disrupting the whole team.

Since arceus-rock is your only switch into draco meteors I'd reccomend a different ev spread of 252 hp/36 sp def/ 168 speed/52 def with a calm nature. The investment enables you to still outspeed max speed rayquaza and the special defense investment helps it take specs draco's and recover the damage off. Also id consider roar over calm mind or will-o-wisp since that helps with tank ho-oh who can actually tank through most of the team if it gets a burn on rock ceus..

Also light clay > leftovers? Im not sure if you like the longetivity though so thats probably the most unstable comment on the team ive made <.<. It still should be considered seeing how the team gets past item clause then XD (even though that clause is rarely used).

the best thing about this guy though is that when people see it on teambuilder they play stupidly because they think im stupid.
I actually cant say how much I agree with that quote <.< suprising stall teams is just annoying. I was victim to it D:. Hope the suggestions i made helped.

I agree about subtoxic lugia, except my xatu can usually pp stall it to death. ill probably fix that thing you said about arceus rock's evs, although arceus rock doesn't really need roar to beat ho-oh; i might try refresh though

well yeah tahnks for the rate but i'll prob keep rock arceus the same except for the evs since cm is really useful against stallbreaker gira-o

I really don't see how anyone can read Theorymon's post and still think Charizard is worth using in Ubers. I can think of absolutey no reason to use Charizard over Blaziken, Ho-Oh, or Victini on this team. Please at least try them out over Charizard. It seems to me that you're blindly hanging onto Charizard because you want to believe that it's good (when it's not) just so that you can have that ever-so-lovely feeling of "I discovered something good in Ubers". But really it's a false feeling. Charizard has been tested before, and was QC Rejected. It's just not good, and the Fire-types listed are far, far better than it.

Well Charizard is specially based unlike all the ones you mentioned :P but yeah I understand what you're getting at. I actually have tested a few Pokemon over Charizard; one of my team uses BandZekrom over Charizard, and they're all pretty successful, but to be honest, Charizard is better fitted to this team. Trust me, I know the difference between using your favorites and using good Pokemon. I can detail why Charizard is better than the other Pokemon for this team.

Charizard over Blaziken and Ho-oh: Firstly, Blaziken is horribly walled by Giratina, which annoys this team, while Charizard 2HKOes Giratina. Secondly, Blaziken is checked by Groudon while Charizard is not. Finally, Blaziken needs to set-up while Charizard can immediately use Fire Blast, which is annoying as it is much easier to be able to use Fire Blast randomly. Most of this applies to Ho-oh as well. Finally, Charizard revenges BU Dialga the best out of all of these Pokemon; Blaziken can't KO a +2/+2 Dialga, while Charizard can.

Charizard over Victini: I haven't ever really used Victini, but I don't really get how you would think it's more viable on this team than Charizard. V-Create is cool, but Fire Blast is just as strong with less drawbacks.

The main advantages with your Pokemon is that they deal better with Rain by a lot; Blaziken can HJK Kyogre, Ho-oh can BB Kyogre, and Victini can Fusion Bolt Kyogre. However, I only ever use 3 Pokemon when dealing with rain; Xatu, Shedinja, and Arceus. I never use any other Pokemon when dealing with rain basically. My other three Pokemon are useful to deal with Sun.

Please don't think I'm trying to be stubborn; I actually have tested Pokemon in place of Charizard, but the sheer power of a Fire Blast is what keeps Charizard on my team.

Also, when I talk about Charizard, I never assume Stealth Rock is going to be up; this is because my Xatu will always keep off hazards. If my Xatu does not keep off hazards, I lose; if it does then I will most likely win.

I hate to burst your bubble here, but I have to agree with Tobes and Theorymon here. There are so many better pokemon to use than Charizard. The rest of the team is pretty silly too. It is entirely predicated upon stopping SR with a Xatu. Furthermore: sure, there is nothing that can do EXACTLY what Charizard can do, but that doesn't mean that the other pokes aren't just plain better. I admire your attempt to use these underrated Uber threats, but seriously...just use a real team.

The Uber ladder is pretty dead these days so I wouldn't take too much stock in the fact that you got to #7. I held the #1 position for 4 months back when people actually played in the tier, and my teams still weren't all that good. if you are a solid player with a team that doesn't just fold to common ubers threats you can probably grind your way decently high. I hate to discount accomplishments, but it is the unfortunate truth.

You seem like a pretty smart guy and seem to be capable of speaking pretty knowledgeably about the metagame, so once again: Why do you insist on playing with such a silly team? I can understand that you want to use underrated threats and find using Shedinja and the like fun, but even then is it really necessary to make an RMT?

Furthermore: sure, there is nothing that can do EXACTLY what Charizard can do, but that doesn't mean that the other pokes aren't just plain better. I admire your attempt to use these underrated Uber threats, but seriously...just use a real team.
I understand how Charizard may be iffy due to its uselessness against rain, but I really don't understand about how the rest of the team is bad. The main point I have against your argument is this sentence:
It is entirely predicated upon stopping SR with a Xatu.
I agree with that statement, yet I do not see how this make my team any weaker. Xatu is capable of stopping Stealth Rock in basically every game I play unless I misplay horribly; my losses basically are due to Xatu getting killed by something unlucky like if Groudon can get a critical Stone Edge or by someone running Stealth Rock on something unorthodox, such as Thunder Dialga or a Jirachi that I do not switch into. Xatu literally beats every common Stealth Rock user. The core of Xatu / Shedinja / Arceus-Rock is admittedly what makes up my team, though. I am willing to admit that Charizard is not that useful compared to the other members of my team; it basically is used to weaken Palkia on non-rain teams so that my Reshiram can have a clean sweep with Blue Flare.

I agree completely.

I don't wish to sound stubborn, but I honestly do not think that that you can call this team "not a real team". However, I can see that due to the nature of it, this team is hard to give advice to rather than small nitpicks such as EVs (and that it doesn't really engender any helpful rating ;___;), so mods, could you please lock it? :x
