Mega-Shrimp and good stuff

Introduction
Well I'm back with another RMT but instead of doing my VGC team, and typing on my phone, I'm using a computer and a team that started based around Mega-Shrimp aka Mega-Gyarados and Sylveon. First off I will explain how I decided on the team and then list individual 'mons etc as per normal, however at the end I will be giving credits to all those that have helped me make the team into what it is, of course it isn't perfect but it's solid and letting me climb up the smogon doubles (current) ladder quite rapid. Sitting just over 1300 at 1302, my current record is: 16-3.

Team Building Process
The doubles community here is awesome, honestly. If you were to check out the doubles sub forum in the competitive section you will see sample teams that the council and other members have put together, not to mention that the /#/doubles chat is full of friendly and welcoming people.

Anyway I was originally using, Tsunami's supportive Syvleon team, knowing the amazing strength of the sugoi little fairy (suspect ban inc?) held I decided to pull apart the team and make my own after I played against Yohoe who was using a very bulky Thundy-prankster build (i still win GeeGee). Knowing I could make a team similar to that of Tsunamis but with my own twist I started to think about what I could do to call the team my own. The following result is what I shall be showing you now.

TD;LR
I wanted to use the sugoi fairy for amazing spread damage with hyper voice / pixilate.

I also wanted to use the Mega-Shrimp because while using Tsunami's team, it was winning games when Sylveon couldn't.

After vsing Yohoe, and speaking to Kylecole I saw how amazing a bulky support Thundy could be. Not only could he help with disruption, he won't die to many OHKOs (unless there was like blizzard in hail). It was a no brainier to include him due to the fact that prankster is one of the best abilities in a game imo.

I needed a check to things like shaymin, ice 'mons (even tho thundy is pretty bulky) and just another powerhouse in general. This spot was originally more support but i quickly changed it to the freight-train that is known as Heatran with a sub set, which benefited from thundy too.

I needed somone that could use fake out and had accessed to wide guard so I could protect both Mega-Shrimp and Heatran so they could set up, or even sylveon so she could just have more chances of being out there. Thus I opted to include a defensive hitmontop.

I wanted to include a follow me user and after using the team building weakness calculator, I opted for a bulky Togekiss which had access to tailwind support.

Sylveon @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 36 HP / 252 SAtk / 220 Spd
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Moonblast
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power [Ground]

Sylveon isone of the all stars in my team! Tsunami's set was a straight 252/252 Satk/Spd spread which is pretty standard however I spoke to Gyarad0s for a bit about the team and he said I didn't need that much. The 220 Spd out speeds crept washing machine (rotom-wash). while the 36 HP gives some extra bulk which has saved me a fair few times.

Hyper voice turns into a STAB spread, Shadow ball for psychics, moonblast for massive single target damage or I suspect wide guard is going up, and HP ground for that ever so present heatran.

Honestly Sylveon is extremly strong and if you like Mega-Gardevior however don't want to run her due to wanting to run something else I would recommend Sylveon simply due to the fact, she does the job just as good if not better imo. This pokemon can honestly singley sweep teams.

Gyarados (F) @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate -> Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Protect
Mega-Shrimp is in the team for a few reasons, he is a check to common fire 'mons that I've seen such as Bird face (Blaziken) and street light (chandelure). He also gets Mold Breaker in mega form which is extremly useful and loses it's 4x weakness to lightning due to gaining dark typing. But I guess the main reason is because I personally don't like mega-kang (vote yes for suspect ban pls) and look how bad ass this guy looks. Also intimidate is really great for switch ins.

I use to run a very bulky / taunt based Gyaradose but sadly he dosen't do amazing damage and so I opted for a extremely fast and extremely powerful build. Going balls first as you could call it. Normally paired with Togekiss so I can at least get a single DD off, honestly he dosen't need much more than a single one, as EQ spam and waterfall spam is just to strong, not to mention paired with togekiss, flinch will always happen if Waterfall / Air Slash are both used on the same 'mon. Although a win condition in his own right, he is just as good as a wall breaker for sylveon / heatran.

Kyurem-Black @ Choice Band
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 24 HP / 252 Atk / 232 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Fusion Bolt
- Ice Beam
- Outrage
Added in replace of prankster support thundy, I find this Kyurem-Black set (recommended by Audiosurfer) to be amazingly strong. Not only does he have amazing coverage with the set but hits like a truck in his own right. Using outrage on things like mega-venasaur and OHKOing with a crit, I find Kyurem to pave a clear path for my sweepers to come in and go GG.

Most accurate drawing ever
Heatran @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 76 HP / 252 SAtk / 180 Spd
Modest Nature
- Heat Wave
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Protect

A pretty standard heatran set, the evs make him quite bulky but still a powerhouse of a hitter through stab HW and EP for other heatrans / fire pokemon. Substitute is used with togekiss / thundy to ensure it gets up while protect helps the sub stay up. In all this heatran means buisness so its unwise to leave anything that's weak to fire out because you can generally say bye bye to them.

I acutally want to try the other sets with Shucca berry etc, and the original version I was running held charcoal to just make kids cry however after talking with lots of different people this is the set I've opted on, however I could be persuaded to change, just not sure what to.

Hitmontop (M) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 112 HP / 252 Atk / 144 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Wide Guard
- Feint
- Fake Out

An amazing hitmontop set provided to me by Memoric a few days ago which I decided to use again. Basically it makes him fast and bulky able to take most hits, I don't know the exact 'mons it beats but anything under 209 (idk whats in the tier off the top my head lel).

Anyway, Close combat is for dark / ice or really anything that needs a beating. Wide guard to protect from EQ, RS etc and also used in times of when I'm using EQ with mega-shrimp and so he isn't hurt. Feint to go through protect, detect etc and fake out for the first turn it comes out to just slap a 'mon and say no.

Really I like hitmontop, however I've been wanting to maybe test like meinshao due to u-turn access but again I'm uncertain with this spot although he is a valued member of my team.

Togekiss (f) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 248 HP / 192 Def / 68 SDef
Calm Nature
- Follow Me
- Tailwind
- Air Slash
- Heal Bell
The follow me user of the team, this togekiss originally ran goggles but once I tried sitrus I preferred it much more. The eves make her as bulky as possible so she can help my sweepers set up if needed. Also Togekiss is pretty cute imo, and this team needs more cute (with togekiss you can say its a 10/10 team due to cutemess).

As stated, follow me is for helping setting up / tanking damage, tailwind is there for speed control, air slash for flinch hax and so she's not complelte taunt bait and heal bell to get rid of status conditions on the team. I was running Roost over heal bell but glad I was told to change it like my god its so much better because I don't have any lum berries etc and will-o-miss and spore are pretty common.

Hi. Its nice to know that you like the dubs community Falling Upwards! I can definitely agree with you - the community is a very good one. Onto your team, i just have a couple of changes i would like to suggest. However, these are just nitpicks as this is a very good team.

Firstly, i notice your spread on hitmontop. You have the right idea with it, outspeeding min-speed rotom-w, but i think they could be made a bit better. I would suggest a 112 HP / 252 Atk / 144 Spe spread. Basically, this outspeeds 12 spe rotom-w. Why this? You may ask. Well. Min-speed rotom-w is one of the main speed tiers in dubs. It's where all bulky attackers (e.g. Rotom-w, (mega)scizor, heatran) all aim to beat. Rotom-w usually runs 12 speed evs now to outspeed any speed creeping pokes. It is crucial for hitmontop to outspeed rotom so it can get a close combat off before being burnt.

Secondly, i would go with safety goggles over sitrus berry on togekiss. I understand you have tried it but prefer sitrus. However, your team now has no answer to sleep and breloom can be pretty annoying to face if allowed to sleep togekiss. Safety goggles gives togekiss an immunity to residual weather damage, increasing its survivability. If you decide to do this, then roost over heal bell would let togekiss heal up and do more follow me shenanigans.

Overall, these suggestions are minor nitpicks in what is a very good team!

change ideas:
  • speed heatran up to 56 HP / 252 SpA / 200 Spe @ Modest nature. This beats neutral 252 Bisharp, which is a huge problem since you have 2 fairies and 2 intimidators, so it can be a problem for you
  • make top a spread of 252 HP / 136 Atk / 60 Def / 60 Sdef @ adamant (w/ sitrus). this lets it live through 2 psyshocks/psychics from cresselia, and makes it overall more durable to last longer, since it really doesn't hit that hard anyways, meaning that a fast offensive set isnt very useful (this benchmark only existed last gen due to fighting gem making cc much more powerful, but that doesn't exist now with the loss of gems)
  • your team is too passive for its goals. in particular thund is very reactive but doesn't really assist with your own goals at all. instead i'd recommend cb kyurem-black. this thing is not only very bulky (so you can keep a rain check) but it is also able to wear down steels and intimidators and such that would normally be preventing your sylveon/tran/mega gyarados from cleaning up the opposing team, making it a good option for the team. ik you'll dislike the loss of thunder wave so
  • just put it on togekiss over either tailwind or heal bell. it would probably be best over tailwind though since you probably won't need two types of speed control, but it lets you retain the ability to check a fast threat in an emergency. also, thunder wave syngergizes well with air slash on togekiss, making it even better at haxing than thundurus was initially with paraswag.
  • the safety goggles idea could also be worth tryin out
hopefully my ideas help you with your team
Kyurem-Black @ Choice Band
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 24 HP / 252 Atk / 232 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Fusion Bolt
- Ice Beam
- Outrage

ice beam still ohkos everything even with negative investment so you can run adamant. evs outspeed up to neutral mega garchomp, but if you want to you can just go for full speed to tie with opposing kyurem-bs

Alright AuraRayquaza & Audiosurfer I will be testing both those ev spreads on hitmontop out firstly so thank you for sharing them. I have changed the heatran ev spread too, I used the one in the analysis and as you told me it's kinda old but thats ok!

I shall be testing the kuy-b out defiantly, as once i peaked 1425 i noticed how i really only had 3 pokemon doing damage so yeah it might help a lot. I like the idea of choice band Kyurem-black too, thing sounds terrafying imo.

Lastly I honeslty havent encountered many weather related teams besides rain or teams with a spore user, I did originally have it but I guess it will be needed especially since i am kind of seeing them now.

Thanks for the rate guys, ill let you guys know how it ends up!

Hey, Falling Upwards, and welcome to Smogon! Glad to see you're beginning to get involved in the Doubles community, and I have to admit, this team is very solid. Your team has pretty good synergy; whatever weakness one member of your team possesses is easily covered by another member, making it difficult to pinpoint a specific threat or a certain flaw. However, I would like to make a few suggestions that can significantly benefit you in the future, despite the fact you already carry a very good team. :]

To start off, I highly recommend replacing Shadow Ball for Psyshock on Sylveon; this provides her with coverage against Poison-types, notably Max HP Mega-Venusaur (guaranteed 2HKO while dealing 58.7 - 69.7% damage) and Max HP Amoonguss with 184 Defense EVs and a Sitrus Berry (guaranteed 2HKO even after the Sitrus Berry recovery while dealing 62.9 - 74% damage). Normally, those two Grass / Poison type Pokémon would wall Sylveon as they resist her STAB Fairy-type attacks, but the addition of Psyshock will enable her to put up a fight against those two common Smogon Doubles threats. Honestly, Shadow Ball isn't needed due to the fact Sylveon's STAB Hyper Voice or Moonblast will be able to 2HKO most Psychic-types anyway, thanks to her max Special Attack investment + Choice Specs.

The only other change I would make to your team is to utilize STAB Flash Cannon over Substitute on Heatran, giving him the ability to deal a significant amount of damage to Fairy-type Pokémon, which your team lacks. A Flash Cannon from Modest Max Special Attack Heatran is a guaranteed 2HKO against the likes of Calm Togekiss with a Max HP and a Max Special Defense investment, given that the Togekiss doesn't carry a Sitrus Berry (most likely a Safety Goggles if that is the case). You are also able to 2HKO Max HP Mega-Gardevoir (65.2 - 77.6% damage) and Max HP Sylveon (58.3 - 69% damage) guaranteed. If you do consider using this set, I suggest using a Shuca Berry over Leftovers to survive most Ground-type attacks; Leftovers is only effective on a SubTran set, where Heatran can gradually recover HP behind Substitute and Protect.

Anyway, I hope I helped! The suggestions offered by fellow Doubles players above me are also helpful. :D Good luck with this team!

and i would take this moves for kyrem-balck
