In Monotype more so than other tiers, there are huge threats that can be very hard to get past for types that have a large amount of shared weaknesses. As such, teambuilding in Monotype can be tough and there are so many teambuilding pressures that it can be difficult to decide what to do add on to counteract them. This thread is meant to serve as a resource by showing checks and counters to common threats in the Monotype metagame.

Rules:
1. Every round, I will nominate a Pokemon for discussion, along with the big types that the Pokemon is a threat to. Within ≈ 7 days' time, you guys will have the ability to discuss and nominate various Pokémon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week, for one type or for every type.

2. I will post voting on Friday. Vote for your favorite check and favorite counter for each type, and I'll choose the top three of each or more by Sunday, and post the new Pokemon and types. I've decided that voting would be too scattered because of the separation by type, so no voting, I'll just add them all into the archive.

3. The results will be archived and the process will continue week after week.

4. Follow the definitions for checks and counters, by MattL in The Smog Issue 32! (With a loose interpretation , as since this is Monotype it is hard to fit these criteria.)
Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
5. Make sure your Pokemon is viable. If your Pokemon isn't ranked in the viability rankings here, then don't post it.

6. For the first three days of the nomination, (usually Friday-Monday) each person can only nominate one Pokemon. During the second half of the nomination (usually Monday-Thursday) each person can nominate as many Pokemon as he/she wants. Post calcs if not obvious, and definitely provide a few lines of description.

7. You may reserve a check or counter, but you must post within a day of reserving or it's free for someone else to take.

Week 1: Specs Keldeo

Types: Rock Steel Dark Ice Normal Fire Ground

Keldeo @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Hydro Pump
- Secret Sword
- Icy Wind

Keldeo's one of the biggest threats to prepare for in Monotype, so nearly every type needs to prepare for it. I wanted to pick a broad Pokemon week 1, so post checks and counters to Keldeo for any of these types! Remember, you can nominate 1 check or 1 counter for the first three days of the round, and you can nominate as many as you like in the last 3 days.

Remember, since this is Monotype there will likely be a lot more checks and very few counters for some types, but that's okay! With a strong pokemon like Keldeo, it's to be expected.

Counter

Latias-Mega @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Psychic
- Dragon Pulse
- Recover

Mega Latias is a really neat and cute counter than can just set up on Keldeo and not really mind anything bar hax such as a Crit Icy Wind or a Scald Burn. While the speed drop from Icy Wind kinda sucks, Latias can make up for it with it's bulk, which it can freely boost against Keldeo most of the time. In addition, it can Recover off damage then kill off Keldeo with Psychic if it didn't force it out already.

Check

Hoopa-Unbound @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hyperspace Fury
- Focus Blast
- Gunk Shot
- Psychic / Hyperspace Hole / Zen Headbutt

Scarf Hoopa-U can just click a Psychic STAB against Keldeo and OHKO it, making it a really solid revenge killer and check. However, Keldeo can do solid damage against it with either of its STABs, burn it with Scald, or slow it down with Icy Wind, so it's not a very safe switch-in.

I'm naming magnezone for a steel check with 2 sets

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power [Grass] or [Ice]

Magnezone @ Custap Berry
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch/Thunder Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Mirror Coat
- Flash Cannon

Calcs
252 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 320-380 (99 - 117.6%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 354-416 (109.5 - 128.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 213-252 (75.8 - 89.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (so only if you're really unlucky a burn will kill you)
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Scald vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Magnezone: 211-249 (61.5 - 72.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Mirror coat needs no calcs :P

PS: im kinda new to the forums so idk much about formatting the post, sorry :P

Fire Soft Check

Charizard-Mega-Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost / Defog
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Fire Blast

On fire, not a lot can handle Keldeo's sheer strength with specs boosted Scald, let alone Hydro Pump. Enter Mega Charizard-Y which can live any hit and OHKO back with Solar Beam. Further, the 5 turns of drought provide the rest of the fire team with some much needed respite from water threats (For example, Keldeo coming back in and threatening the team once more). With a free switch at 100% hp, Charizard will win every single time barring a crit (Which is 12.5% to OHKO with Scald, and needs to hit the 80% accuracy with Hydro Pump). Charizard fails to check sufficiently if previously damaged, or if Stealth Rocks are on the field, however. Thus, it remains a soft check.

Defensive:
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard Y in Sun on a critical hit: 258-306 (86.8 - 103%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard Y in Sun: 236-278 (79.4 - 93.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Offensive:
252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Solar Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 332-392 (102.7 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Check

Aerodactyl-Mega @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature / Jolly Nature
- Aerial Ace
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit
- Earthquake

Aero acts as a nice revenge killer for keldeo on rock. Fighting has a pretty tough time switching into the rock bird and water can have some trouble as well due to aeros access to earthquake. It is only a check because aero has no business trying to switch in on keldeo so you should only be using it to revenge and not for trying to dodge hydro pump. If you are using a jolly spread, you do fall short of a KO without rocks up but it's pretty easy to maintain rocks against fighting at least. Adamant does still outspeed pre mega so no worries there either so Ada is probs the better way to go to ensure you KO it.

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Aerodactyl: 560-660 (186 - 219.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Tough Claws Mega Aerodactyl Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Keldeo: 314-372 (97.2 - 115.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Diancie-Mega @ Diancite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Protect
- Moonblast
- Diamond Storm
- Earth Power

Pretty straightforward with this one. All you have to do is click protect, Mega Evolve, then hit moonblast because of Diancie Mega's amazing speed makes it faster than Keldeo by 4 points. Besides this, Mega Diancie proves to be a huge threat against Fighting thanks to Sticky Web Support from Shuckle. It can literally 6-0 Fighting with Webs up, bar Mega Medicham and bullet punch if that's on the fighting team.

252 Atk Victini Bolt Strike vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 258-304 (79.8 - 94.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

This is really more of a revenge killer than a check, but Specs Hydro against a Fire team is hard asf to check. You can run Zen Headbutt too it you want.

Steel Check

Flinchlord Jirachi.

Jirachi @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 176 HP / 152 Atk / 180 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Heart Stamp
- U-turn
- Iron Head
- Fire Punch

Thanks to Choice Scarf, Jirachi doesn't need any speed investment whatsoever to beat up to max investment, Natured, 111 Base Speed pokemon, reaching a decent speed tier of 354. It can literally just flinch its way past keldeo, only getting 2HKO'ed by specs Hydro Pump / Secret Sword.
EVs are so that it doesn't get 2hko'ed by Scald.

Calcs:

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 176 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 207-244 (53.7 - 63.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Ground Counter

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald

- Toxic
- Recover

Keldeo is seen as one of the top tier threats in Monotype and one of the most troublesome Pokemon for Ground to deal with due to its great Speed tier combined with excellent coverage. Gastrodon is often the most reliable counter to Keldeo on Ground thanks to its good defensive typing along with the ability to stall non Hidden Power Grass variants out with Toxic + Recover.

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gastrodon: 190-225 (44.6 - 52.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Metagross @ Assault Vest
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Atk / 96 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Zen Headbutt
- Meteor Mash
- Bullet Punch
- Ice Punch / Earthquake

This metagross set is honestly one of my most favourite ones for steel, albeit it underused, and I feel that it really helps steel to take on big threats such as fighting teams and the monster that is keldeo (and also lando-i cause that thing is annoying), being able to tank a hit from any one of its coverage moves, and knock it out with a zen headbutt, although in the off chance you get a low roll, it will still be in the range in which bullet punch knocks it out. Also, as a little added bonus, most of the time the opponent will not have a safe switch in to this thing on a fighting team (bar a healthy cobalion), therefore putting added pressure on the opponent, whittling down keldeo's partners 1 by 1.

160+ Atk Metagross Zen Headbutt vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 302-356 (93.4 - 110.2%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
160+ Atk Metagross Zen Headbutt vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 302-356 (93.4 - 110.2%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
160+ Atk Metagross Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 38-45 (11.7 - 13.9%) -- possible 8HKO

Rotom-Frost @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard
- Volt Switch
- Trick

Scarf Rotom-Frost serves as a Check to Keldeo on Ice teams, due to it outspeeding Keldeo thanks to Scarf and having a decent chance to OHKO it with Thunderbolt. Sadly sometimes without some priori damage Thunderbolt can't kill Keldeo, but since Hail and hazards are likely to wear Keldeo down a bit, it isn't as hard to kill Keldeo with TBolt. Rotom-F cannot switch into Keldeo however, so it has to function as a revenge killer.

252 SpA Rotom-F Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 278-330 (86 - 102.1%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO

Heliolisk @ Life Orb
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Surf/Grass Knot
- Hyper Voice

Outspeeds and 0hkos keldeo. This thing is a big threat for fighting and water monos because niether type has a solid answer. If feeling real you can also switch it straight into a scald for example if they scald against a bulky staraptor.

252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Hyper Voice vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Swampert: 185-218 (46.1 - 54.3%) -- 50.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Swampert: 442-520 (110.2 - 129.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Cobalion: 222-263 (57.5 - 68.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Breloom: 255-302 (97.7 - 115.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Lanturn can switch in but is easily worn down with multiple switches and hazards.

252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Hyper Voice vs. 104 HP / 212+ SpD Lanturn: 152-179 (36.4 - 42.9%) -- 96.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Hyper Voice vs. 104 HP / 212+ SpD Lanturn: 152-179 (36.4 - 42.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Can also knock out a weakened keldeo which tries to sub or something.

252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 185-218 (57.2 - 67.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Pidgeot @ Pidgeotite
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Heat Wave
- U-turn / Hidden Power Ground
- Roost

Probably the most common check on normal teams. After mega evolution it outspeeds and OHKO's keldeo with Hurricane. Fighting teams have also very limited switchins to this monster. If it comes down to it, it can survive a Secret Sword however it's mostly used as a revenge killer.
252 SpA Mega Pidgeot Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 404-476 (125 - 147.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Pidgeot: 247-292 (80.4 - 95.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Ice Soft Check

Jynx (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic / Psyshock
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball

I chose Jynx because of how it can switch in into Keldeo's Water type attacks with its Dry Skin ability. Choice Scarf ensures that it outspeeds specs Keldeo, which are the more common variants of it. Although it can't switch in into Secret Sword, Jynx can be a revenge killer once it's switched in and knock it out with its STAB Psychic attacks.
